In Central Wisconsin, undocumented immigrants from Latin America make up the majority of the workforce in the dairy industry. Although these undocumented folks are allowed to own and register vehicles, they can't get driver's licenses without legal residency. As a result, police in rural Wisconsin often racially profile drivers of color, knowing that they may not have a license to be on the road.  We spoke to Melissa Sanchez, a reporter for ProPublica who inspired this episode with her article, “Wisconsin's Dairy Industry Relies on Undocumented Immigrants, but the State Won't Let Them Legally Drive.” We also heard from Tony Gonzalez, founder of the American Hispanic Association, and local dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser.

For instance, Melissa Sanchez stages a conversation between Spenser and the trans theorist Julia Serrano; Patrick Aaron Harris reads Spenser's Amoretti with Sianne Ngai's theorization of cute poetics; and Joe Moshenska and Ayesha Ramachandran look at Spenser through Eduardo Viveiros de Castro's “cannibal metaphysics.” Each essay, from Megan Bowman's examination of “spectacular staring” in Rosemarie Garland-Thompson to Supriya Chaudhuri's consideration of Donna Harraway, gestures toward new critical horizons for early modern studies to take up. Additionally, as the theorist's work participates in “companionable thinking with” Spenser, the poetry of the Faerie Queene, Amoretti, and The Shepheardes Calender is shown to enrich contemporary discussions of literary theory. In this episode you will hear: (06:20) In this week’s news, an article from Pro-Publica.org, “Parents Are Giving Up Custody of Their Kids to Get Need-Based College Financial Aid” by Jodi Cohen and Melissa Sanchez. Dozens of rich families in Chicago have been discovered scamming the admissions system, this time as it relates to financial aid. These families are turning over guardianship of their teens to a friend or relative so the student can declare financial independence, which allows them to qualify for tuition and scholarships they would not be otherwise eligible for. This is a newly discovered scam and some schools have started to investigate some of their guardianship cases of students who are currently enrolled on their campuses.   (21:10) We are in Chapter 82 of 171 Answers and Mark describes the gap year and the gap semester year. We talk about six of the common reasons students take gap years. We talk about the benefits of a gap year. We talk about the school policies when it comes to gap years.   (31:04) This week’s question is from a parent who is torn between their child’s acceptance at Wake Forest with a scholarship and their acceptance at Stanford where they will not qualify for financial aid.  The parent says, it is a classic case of money vs prestige. The parent wants to know how Mark would handle this situation. The parent shares some very personal financial information, and even though the parent said we could share it, we keep this parent anonymous. Mark shares what advice he gave the parent and then we find out what the student and the parent ultimately decided. What factors influenced their decision. Anika communicates how this whole discussion inspired her.   (45:51) Mark’s interview is with Mr. Dave Wagner who is the Director of Admissions of St. Olaf, in Part I of “Understanding the Common Application” Dave shares his backstory, including his experience as a student at St. Olaf, how he ended up at St. Olaf, the various roles he has had in his 15 years there Dave explains what the Common App is and he shares why he likes the Common App Dave explains what Part 1, the Profile section is and he talks about how the Profile section is helpful in the admissions process. Next Dave explains Part 2 of the Common App, the Family section and he shares how this section helps admission officers in the decision making process   (54:38) Mark’s recommended resource of the week is a Barnes and Nobles Colleges Insight Report entitled, “Mental Health and Well-Being- How we better care for the whole student” Here is the PDF of this excellent report that is based on a survey of 762 college students and 1708 parents: (1:11:43) Our College Spotlight for the week is University of San Francisco (CA)   Please complete our podcast survey so we can improve our podcast and meet your needs. Listen to our interview with Melissa Sanchez with Rock Your Mocs.  November is Native American Heritage Month. 2016 is the 6th year of Rock Your Mocs which is a worldwide Native American & Indigenous Peoples movement held annually during November which is also National Native American Heritage Month in the U.S. A.. It’s easy to participate by wearing moccasins to school, to work or wherever your day takes you. Or if a person doesn’t own mocs, can’t wear mocs, or perhaps their Tribe didn’t wear mocs, they may wear a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon instead. Even easier, the event takes place where you are, where you’re going and where you live. Rock Your Mocs if a fun way to unify Native American, Aboriginal, First Nations, Alaskan Native, Indigenous Peoples globally through internet social media, participants post their photos for everyone to enjoy, sharing their stories and creating an “online photo album” by using any one or all of the following hastags: #RYM2016 #ROCKYOURMOCS. It’s like a great big fun moccasin party that everyone gets to see pictures of! RYM was founded by Jessica “Jaylyn” Atsye of Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico U.S.A. and she has partnered with Emergence Productions, a Native American owned Event Production Company, who together are working hard to expand this cultural empowerment initiative worldwide! Around the world, people have taken the initiative to organize - Moccasin making workshops - Round dances - Community “Fun” walk/run’s - Group photos - Native American and Indigenous cultural awareness events - Connecting youth and elder events - Museums have created moccasin or Rock Your Mocs exhibitions Founder Jessica “Jaylyn” Atsye hopes RYM Day “will continue to reach even further worldwide and inspire cultural pride for Native Americans wherever they may be, as well as anyone who would just like to participate in a fun way of celebrating Indigenous & Native American Peoples and U.S.A.‘s National Native American Heritage Month.” ________________________________________ Dates: During November Why a week? The dates have increased to a week, only because this creates more opportunity days. We are trying to accommodate schools, people who work Monday – Friday, and for people organizing events. (November 15th, the original date, tends to fall on a weekend) Do we "have" to wear our Mocs the whole week? Nope, choose a day or days or the whole week if you like. Is there a main day? The original day will always be November 15th Where is RYM: Where ever you may be! Wherever your day take you! Why: We, as Indigenous people, wear our moccasins, standing together worldwide, while recognizing our Tribal individuality. Honoring our ancestors & indigenous peoples worldwide and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month. How to join in: Wear your moccasins or a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon or organize an event Internet: Using Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram etc.) post your photos, group photos, stories on the Rock Your Mocs Facebook page Use one or all the hashtags: #RYM2015 #ROCKYOURMOCS #ROCKURMOCS #NationalNativeAmericanHeritageDay #Moccasins #TurquoiseRibbon Have fun and be creative TRY: A rap, a hand drum song, dance out on your rez, dance, sing, juggle in a creative or unique place. Walk in your mocs in the city, ride a horse, family photo, sibling photo, pets who wear mocs, group photo.
