In celebration of Black History Month, we are partnering with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment to showcase four Black films from their legendary movie vault. In this final episode of this four-part podcast series, Jack Rico and Mike Sargent analyze the musical biopic, “Straight Outta Compton”. Episode BreakdownSegment 1: The Cultural Significance of Straight Outta ComptonJack and Mike give an overview of the movie and what it personally means to them. They also note that the film was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $200 million worldwide and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The guys discuss the film's relevance to current conversations about police brutality and racial justice, and the impact of hip-hop and rap music on society. Segment 2: The Black Male Experience Watching Straight Outta ComptonIn this segment, the guys explore the impact of the movie on pop culture, its appeal to a mass audience, Black and Latino toxic masculinity, and the role of art in representing it. They discuss how the film became the highest-grossing movie from an African American director and highlight the explosive power that music can have in society. But, how did Mike feel about this film after the deaths of Eric Garner, Tyree Nichols, and George Floyd? Despite the progress made in society, the guys know police violence against Black people has remained unchanged. Segment 3: The Deeper Conversation of Straight Outta ComptonThe guys dive into a deep conversation about Black cultural appropriation and the power of art in promoting social change. They discuss how Black culture has been commodified and exploited for a profit with little recognition of the contributions made by Black people. We also explore the history of artists who used their music to address social issues, from Nina Simone and Sam Cooke during the Civil Rights Movement to today's Kendrick Lamar and Donald Glover. And what about the contributions of Latino artists in the LA hip-hop scene? The guys examine the contributions of Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, and Cypress Hill. Segment 4: The Movie Conversation of Straight Outta ComptonJack and Mike discuss their shock at Straight Outta Compton not being nominated for more awards and the reasons behind it. They bring up the example of the 2016 Oscars, where "Straight Outta Compton" was only nominated for Best Original Screenplay, which was won by their two white writers. Meanwhile, the lead actors and director, all Black, were shut out of the nominations. Hmmm. The guys also discuss the possibility of a Latino equivalent to "Straight Outta Compton," which would showcase the contributions of Latinos to hip hop. The guys examine the contributions of Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, and Cypress Hill. Segment 5: Bonus FeaturesIn this segment, the focus is on the movie's bonus features, and two of them stood out. The first one is "Becoming NWA," which offers an intimate and insightful glimpse into the personal and artistic journey of the group. The second one is a featurette by director F. Gary Gray, highlighting the film's expression of Black identity and trauma, as well as his exceptional attention to detail in the vivid recreation of the Rodney King riots. They also discuss the importance of understanding the motivation behind NWA's music, including the inspiration for "Fuck the Police." Just for our viewers, buy this movie for $7.50 on VUDU from now until February 28th, and add Straight Outta Compton to your movie collection. Growing up in a mixed neighborhood during the '60s and '70s had a significant influence on Mario Caldato's Jr. musical style. Paul Vato & CiTRic (tune in if you want to know the origin story of CiTRiC's nickname) reconnect and discuss Anthony's storied career, from troubled gang banger, to rap artist to actor in Hollywood. Anthony & Paul discuss what it's really like to work with George Lopez & why taking a Greyhound bus from LA to Las Vegas is a HORRIBLE idea! Campos was born and raised in Boyle Heights, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in East LA. As a child, Anthony was impressed with performers such as Michael Jackson & John Travolta, & dreamed of becoming a performer one day. Inspired by Latino hip-hop artists Kid Frost & Mellow Man Ace, Anthony started performing with the hip-hop group Brown Town Looters in the 1990s. The group played at local venues and eventually landed a record deal with an independent label. When one of their singles became a huge hit in Japan, Anthony & the group had the privilege of traveling to Japan to headline the annual Japan Lowrider Super Show. Throughout the 90s, Anthony continued to book background roles as thugs, gang members and prisoners, & was ultimately “discovered” by Mike Judge. A casting director saw a photo of Anthony on a website promoting his music and tracked him down to audition for a role in Judge's new film “Idiocracy.” Although he had no acting experience, other than gigs as a background actor, Anthony booked the job & unleashed his huge comedy chops when he played the hilarious & memorable role of Secretary of Defense in the film. Since that time, Anthony has appeared in numerous films & TV shows, including the film “Harsh Times” with Christian Bale & Eva Longoria & the TV comedy series “Silicon Valley” on HBO. He has also performed voiceover services for characters on comedies such as “King of the Hill” & “Squidbillies. Paul Vato is an on camera and voice actor, improvisor, podcaster and entrepreneur. When discussing the pioneering figures of what would eventually come to be known as Chicano Rap, there is perhaps no group more iconic and more revered than A Lighter Shade of Brown. Formed in Riverside, CA, in 1990, when ODM (One Dope Mexican, born Robert Gutierrez) was introduced to DTTX (Don't Try to Xerox, born Bobby Ramirez); the duo was part of an explosion of Latin Hip-Hop groups and artists to rise to prominence in the late 1980s and early-'90s; joining the likes of Mellow Man Ace, Kid Frost, Proper Dos, Aztec Tribe, Hi-C, Delinquent Habits, Fundoobiest, Psycho Realm & Cypress Hill among a cavalcade of others to rise to prominence in the early part of the decade. Over the course of nine years, the duo released a string of five albums and provided songs for films such as Mi Vida Loca, Bulletproof and I Like It Like That and penning some of the most iconic songs in the Chicano Rap sub-genre. While the duo didn't quite become household Hip-Hop names, or reach the level of mainstream success as some of their contemporaries; Lighter Shade of Brown was nonetheless a groundbreaking duo that not only helped break down barriers for Chicanos in Hip-Hop during the early 90s but Latino emcees of various backgrounds across the nation. Having paved the way and helped create an entirely new lane for modern Chicano rappers to follow Lighter Shade of Brown's status and contributions to Hip-Hop are forever cemented in their music and their legacy; their music is still enjoyed by countless fans to this very day. We had the chance to talk with ODM and discuss the origins of the group, the history behind some of their most iconic songs, the rise, decline, and resurgence of Lighter Shade of Brown, as well the days leading up to DTTX's tragic passing in 2016. With that said, we are proud to present the twelfth episode of Step Off! Radio with ODM of Lighter Shade of Brown.

*(Guest co-co-host from the Living the Dream Podcast - Beto Duran sits in with us for this episode) Around the same time NWA was coming "straight outta Compton", there was another kid coming straight outta Southgate California by way of Cuba… hitting the charts with a new sound and blazing the trails for future Latin hip hop artists. Mellow Man Ace, AKA Ulpiano Reyes, blew up with a bilingual hit called "Mentirosa" and continued strong for several years, including his experience as a founding member of Cypress Hill with his brother Sen Dog. After feeling cramped by corporate music's hold and control over his sound, he was forced to take a huge leap and do things his own way. Touring and stumbling a few times over the years, he's back in a new way and helping bring up other young hip hop artists, including his son, rapper Cazal Organism. They are starting a reality show together on FuseTV in 2016 - all about their lives behind the scenes as they work with other hip hop artists, perform their live shows and spend time with their families. Check out this week's episode with The Baka Boyz. In this episode you will hear the EDM.COM track of the week from IshDARR - Sugar : https://soundcloud.com/lavish/ishdarr-sugar-prod-medasin And music from Rick James, Pet Shop Boys, Volume 10, Major Lazer, Outkast, Cypress Hill, and AC Slater. Nick V. says Josh Levine is guarded. He might be right. But next to him, everyone seems guarded. He’s the outgoing half of a brother-brother duo who has dominated the airwaves in Los Angeles and around the country for nearly two decades. After moving from nearby Bakersfield, the Vidal brothers changed the sound of LA radio, from the mix show to the morning drive. They introduced Tito — one of LA’s most beloved characters — and helped to discover Big Boy, who would go on to run the morning show for 18 years. Their new show, The Hip Hop Master Mix, is syndicated in over 30 markets. They’ve been important contributors to the Latin hip hop scene, collaborating with OG’s like Mellow Man Ace, ALT, and Lighter Shade of Brown. They also produced the hit single “Pistol Grip Pump” for Volume 10. Perhaps most impressively, they still talk to each other after all these years. Their secret: Stay in your lane. Nick does what he does; Eric does what he does. They also seek outside help from time to time. Learn more about their impressive career path, as well as adventures with Pitbull, MC Hammer, and more. Legendary Godfather of Latin Rap...Mellow Man Ace sits down to discuss his early commercial success and what's new to come from both him and his son.
Producer/rapper Scoop Deville & Hellfyre Club rapper Rheteric Ramirez join MC Nocando & Jeff Weiss this week to discuss the history of latin contributions to Hip-Hop. They start off by talking about several Latin Hip-Hop pioneers such as DJ Disco Wiz, Prince Whipper Whip, The Mean Machine, and Prince Markie Dee of The Fat Boys. Then they explore the West Coast Latin rap boom by talking about Mellow Man Ace, Julio G, Kid Frost, Cypress Hill, Psycho Realm, MC BLVD, and A Lighter Shade of Brown. Next they bridge the gap between the West Coast & East Coast by talking about Delinquent Habits, Big Pun, The Beatnuts, Fat Joe, and N.O.R.E. Finally, they make their way down South as they talk about Baby Bash, Chingo Bling, and South Park Mexican. Plus, we’re treated to some tracks by Scoop & Rheteric.
The story of MellowManAce begins in Cuba… Born under communism in Cuba, MellowManAce became his families' ticket to freedom and passport to the United States. At that time in Cuba, having a child meant a family became eligible for an exit visa. “I was the third born and my number hit the lotto, although we didn't get to leave until four years later due to politics. My family gives me the credit for being here enjoying our freedom in the U.S.” Upon arriving in America, the family was greeted in Miami, moved to New Jersey and ended up in South Gate, California on Cypress Avenue where it all began. MellowMan first got into rap music in 1983 after hearing The Treacherous Three for the first time. When I first heard rap, I knew I had found my calling.” Writing as many rhymes as he could and cutting demos with his brother Sen Dog and B-Real, he still hadn't found his exact niche within Hip-Hop. With a lot of persistence and hard work, he perfected his bilingual style. “I was ecstatic to realize I could fulfill my dreams and represent for my Latino people all in one!” Ulpiano Sergio Reyes (MellowManAce) and older brother Senen Reyes (Sen Dog) formed a rap quartet DVX (Devastating Vocal Xcellence) with Lawrence Muggerud (DJ Muggs) and Louis Freese (B-Real). After a few years MellowMan was signed by Delicious Vinyl and then Capitol Records to launch a solo career and sell over more than 2 million units worldwide. The remaining three members formed the group Cypress Hill, Host @ericzuley
