“I'm only as insecure as the parts of myself I leave in the shadows.” - Marisa G. Franco, PhDWelcome to A Mind of Her Own! I'm Jennifer Reid, MD, a psychiatrist and the author of Guilt Free: Reclaiming Your Life from Unreasonable Expectations. Today I'm joined by Dr. Marisa G Franco, psychologist, professor at the University of Maryland and author of the New York Times bestselling book, Platonic. Her latest book, Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, arrives September 15th, 2026.Key Ideas1. Self-Worth vs. Self-Esteem. Self-worth means treating your internal world, especially your feelings, as if it matters. It has two parts: sensitivity (noticing how you feel) and responsiveness (doing something about it).2. Two Kinds of “High Self-Esteem”. Research shows people who report high self-esteem split into two very different groups: one is defensive, hostile, and takes feelings out on others; the other is compassionate, accountable, and has smooth relationships. The difference isn't whether they feel insecure; it's whether they can acknowledge it.3. “Secure-ish,” not Secure. Franco pushes back on treating “secure attachment” as a fixed, all-or-nothing identity to perform. True security is being honest about when you're anxious, avoidant, or want to withdraw, not hiding those parts.4. Memories are the Database of Self-Esteem. Because memories don't just record the past but predict the future, people with a history of neglect or harm may unconsciously expect rejection, so they resist fully internalizing love or praise, since believing in it now would make the eventual “fall” feel worse.“Tenderly tell the truth of your insecurities first to yourself and then to those who love you.” —Marisa G. Changing 'negative' thoughts to 'positive' thoughts takes up a lot of energy and doesn't always work. But if we can recognise that having 'negative' thoughts and feelings is an entirely normal part of the human experience, we can stop resisting the inevitable. My guest is the world-renowned ACT expert Dr Russ Harris, author of The Happiness trap and the Confidence Gap. ** My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. Water your own grass. When we focus on other people, we lose time that we could otherwise invest in ourselves. We don't grow green grass by focusing on our neighbor's garden, we do it nurturing our own. So, instead of wasting time comparing your path to someone else's, spend it investing, creating, and caring for your own.2. Accept where you are.You can't change something you don't acknowledge. So, instead of resisting or fighting where you are, come to peace with it. Say yes to every part of your life, and from that place, make decisions that will move you in the right direction.3. Love your past.Your life might have been messy and bumpy. It might have been colored by mistakes, anxiety, and fear. I know mine has. But all those things were catalysts to help you become a better, wiser, and more courageous version of yourself. So, embrace your story and how much you've grown from it. Be proud of what you've done and for wanting to create a better life for yourself.4. Do a social media detox. We're constantly bombarded with people who live #blessed lives on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. What we don't consider is that we often compare our own worst moments with someone else's highlight.Social media can be a great source for inspiration. But, if it triggers inadequacy, self-doubt, and frustration, then choose to do a detox. Make sure you control social media and not the other way around.5. Know that this isn't the end of the movie. If you're not happy where you are today, remember that this is just a snapshot of your life. Where you are today doesn't say anything about where you'll be in one or three years from now. What matters isn't where you are. What matters is your mindset, attitude, and where you're going.6. TJ Rowden's message today helps us see and understand that “The battle today, between Babylon and Zion, is being waged between the synapses of our brains.” What exactly does that mean? It's where the focus of our brain is. TJ teaches us that if we compare where we are now and measure it to the IDEAL, we will experience feelings of failure, frustration, disappointment, low self-esteem, and depression. However, if we measure our circumstance from where we began to where we are now, we will gain feelings of Success, Fulfillment, Confidence, High Self-Esteem, Enjoyment and Optimism. Sometimes it's hard to see why 1% increase makes any difference. TJ teaches us the difference of Guilt vs Shame. “Jesus had not finished his work when his body was slain, neither did he finish it after his resurrection from the dead; Although he had accomplished the purpose for which he then came to the earth, he had not fulfilled all his work. And when will he? Not until he has redeemed and saved every son and daughter of our father Adam that have been or ever will be born upon this earth to the end of time…That is his mission. We will not finish our work until we have saved ourselves, and then not until we shall have saved all depending upon us; for we are to become saviors upon Mount Zion, as well as Christ.” -President Packer, October 1995, “This Brilliant Morning of Forgiveness” “If for a while the harder you try, the harder it gets, take heart. So, it has been with the best people who ever lived… So keep loving. Keep trying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. Keep growing. Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow, and forever.” -Elder Jeffrey R Holland For those new to our Stay by the Tree series and Mothers Who Know, we would like to share some of our FREE resources with you: FREE ebook, "Momma Trauma: Now What?: Finding Hope When Your Child Battles Pornography or Other Challenging Issues", by Karen Broadhead, Second Edition - https://www.lifechangingservices.org/momma-trauma Join our FREE Mom Power Training - https://mompowertraining.org/ Warrior Mothers Who Know - this FREE group meets every Tuesday at 11 MT and provides moms with a safe place to ask questions that might be more sensitive. It makes us better able to deal with life's ups and downs. When our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our life in a more negative and critical light. We also feel less able to take on the challenges that life throws at us.What causes low self-esteem?Low self-esteem often begins in childhood.
