Cara Fitzpatrick, author of The Death of Public School, joins us to discuss the history and implications of school choice in America. We delve into how school vouchers, charter schools, and education savings accounts redefine public education. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesThe structure and definition of public education in America are changing rapidly. With more states adopting programs that allow parents to divert public funds to private and charter schools, the idea of what constitutes a public education is being fundamentally reexamined. These changes have far-reaching implications for our communities, teachers, and children. To explore this critical topic, we're joined by Cara Fitzpatrick, editor at Chalkbeat and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Cara's deep dive into the origins and effects of school choice is encapsulated in her book, The Death of Public School. Her work offers a comprehensive look at how we've arrived at the current state of education and what it means for the future.Origins of School ChoiceCara traces the beginnings of school choice back to Florida, a significant testing ground for charter schools and voucher systems. The concept hinges on the principle that public money should follow the student, whether they attend a public, private, or charter school. This notion became particularly contentious with the introduction of education savings accounts, offering unprecedented flexibility in how public funds can be utilized for a student's education.Navigating the Varieties of School ChoiceSchool choice programs can take various forms, such as school vouchers and charter schools. While charter schools operate with public funding but independent management, vouchers allow parents to use public money for private school tuition, including religious institutions. Cara breaks down these different models, highlighting the nuances and controversies associated with each.Historical Context and Its ImplicationsUnderstanding the history of public education helps contextualize today's debates. From the vision of early American leaders like Thomas Jefferson to the contentious battles over school integration in the 1950s, Cara illustrates how the definition of public education has evolved. She emphasizes that this isn't just a new debate but a complex issue with roots in America's early history.Where Are We Now?School choice has grown significantly, with programs now available in over half of the states. However, this growth hasn't come without challenges. Cara explains how the initial waves of school choice, such as those in the 1950s used to resist desegregation, differ significantly from today's initiatives. She also addresses the legal battles that have shaped the current landscape, including key Supreme Court decisions that have supported the use of public funds for religious education under specific conditions.Future of Public EducationThe future of public education is uncertain but seemingly headed towards more choice and less traditional public schooling. As Cara discusses, the recent push towards universal programs – accessible to all students regardless of income or need – indicates a shift supported by current political and judicial climates. In the Episode…In our conversation with Cara, we explore various other topics, including:- The economic arguments for and against school choice- The potential for discrimination within choice programs- The role of competition in improving public schools- Historical and contemporary court rulings impacting school choice- Predicting the future landscape of American public educationCara's deep research and thoughtful insights offer a balanced view on a complex issue. For a more detailed understanding, grab a copy of her book, The Death of Public School, and consider attending local school board meetings to stay engaged with how these changes might affect your community. For more thought-provoking conversations and expert insights, make sure to listen to this week's episode and subscribe to Talking to Teens.Follow us on Social Media! Welcome to Roadcase!!  Madison Cunningham is a native of Southern California and a two-time Grammy nominated artist whose latest effort, "Wednesday," is in the running for Best Folk Album for the 2022 Grammys.  And to further solidify her genre-spanning artistry, she was nominated in the Best Americana Album category for her "Where Are We Now" album in 2019.  Her development as an artist -- having been homeschooled in a fairly religious household, and not having been exposed to popular music heroes until her late teens -- gave Madison a unique perspective to build her guitar skills and artistry from a place all her own. Her music -- an eclectic mix of rock, classical elements, folk, and jazz -- gains even further texture by the strength of her gorgeous voice.  Telling her own story in her songs, and working with such greats as Chris Thile and Andrew Bird along the way, Madison continues to be an integral part of the "new Laurel Canyon sound" that has been influencing many amazing artists from within the heart of the Los Angeles music scene for years now. Madison is a true hard-working artist with an uber-strong work ethic and a heart of gold. 마마무는 'Where Are We Now로, 트와이스는 Alcohol-Free로 돌아왔다.

Our final episode on the life (or lives) of David Bowie begins and ends with a birthday. We start in 2013, when David reentered public life nearly a decade after his heart attack with the surprise release of “Where Are We Now," his first new song in a decade. It was one of the most stunning comebacks in music history. Most fans assumed that David had simply retired from the industry, content to live out the rest of his days as a father, husband, and anonymous New Yorker. Instead, he'd recorded an entire album of new material called 'The Next Day' entirely in secret. Even at age 66, he still had the power to shock. The story concludes with 'Blackstar.' Released the day David turned 69 in January of 2016, it's an album that many believe was his parting gift as he faced down the illness that would claim his body two days later. Was this a knowing goodbye? We'll examine the evidence and conflicting theories. Intentional or not, it's a fitting farewell — one that highlights David's creative daring and his absolute fearlessness. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Government Taxes Replace Theocratic Tithes (Romans 13:1-7) Paul is speaking specifically about governmental authorities, directing that taxes be paid to the state. In this case, Rome had replaced the theocracy in the governing of Israel. Though the Law of Moses was respected as tradition by the Romans, and the Israelites were allowed to follow the commandments, Israel was no longer a theocracy, and was not free to worship God the way God had commanded them to. Summary of Tithing Under Grace Throughout the New Testament, Paul's vocabulary and teaching suggest that giving is voluntary and that there is no set percentage. In fact, nowhere in the New Testament are believers told to tithe by anyone! Or even how much to give, when or to whom. They are only encouraged to provide for those who are in need, their ministers, and for the stranger. WHERE ARE WE NOW? Under Law? Under the Law, relationship with God is defined by how well you fulfill His commandments. Anyone can attempt do this; you don't have to know God to tithe. Tithing doesn't bring anyone into a closer relationship with God or with others, and it doesn't contribute to a relationship that already exists. Grace Full Relationship! We still find it so hard to comprehend that the God of the universe loves us so much that there is nothing He requires of us but to accept His love. He provides for us because He loves us. CONSEQUENCES (Why Is This So Important?) Matter of Control How much, when and to whom we give of our resources, our time and our money, is often one of the ways we gain or maintain control. Like Autism Live on Facebook at http://facebook.com/autismlive  Andrew Duff was diagnosed with Autism as a child.  His parents did everything right, they started early intervention and made sure he got all the help he needed.  Andrew, in his own words "got better".  But "getting better" isn't always easy.  Andrew's one man show "Where Are We Now?" takes a poignant look at what "getting better" looks like, all of the blessings and all of the angst that comes with it.  This amazing young man speaks candidly about creating and performing this ground breaking show and what his plans are now.
