The 1991 Washington Huskies are, by most accounts, one of the greatest college football teams ever assembled. With top players like Steve Emtman, Dave Hoffman, Jaime Fields, Donald Jones, Walter Bailey, Beno Bryant, Mario Bailey, Billy Joe Hobert and Mark Brunell as well as many others, the cast of characters not only on the field, but also on the coaching staff, were the stuff of legend. Former KJR personality Mike Gastineau, "The Gas Man", came to Seattle in early 1991, so he had a front row seat to see what that Husky team was able to do. Now, 30 years later, he has endeavored to give Husky fans and the rest of the nation a closer look at what that team was all about. His relationship with Hall-of-Fame coach Don James, James' wife Carol, as well as some of the players and other coaches associated with that team has allowed him to pull back the curtain, so to speak, and tell the backstories of what went on during that magical season. Dawgman's Kim Grinolds sat down with "The Gas Man" recently and got the chance to get the scoop on why Gastineau decided to write the book, what it meant as far as all of the information and his interviews with the players and coaches who made history. From the letdown of the 1990 season to the offseason of work the players and coaches put in to the epic win over Nebraska in Lincoln to their close call against Cal in Strawberry Canyon, Gastineau takes you through everything in his book "Fear No Man" that is required reading for any true Husky fan. Dick is out just a few more days. Today, Mike Gastineau sits in with Softy after last night's Rolling Stones show. Pro Football Focus has expanded their reach, now looking at college football, and they've ranked Jacob Eason as the fifth best quarterback in the Pac-12, 36th in the country. It's gotten a lot of Dawg fans upset, but these rankings don't mean much, and he's got plenty of time to prove them wrong. It's an interesting time in Seattle as we hype up two players we haven't even seen yet; Jacob Eason for the Dawgs, and D. K. Metcalf for the Hawks. The difference is, Eason will be under the spotlight constantly as he'll be taking every snap for the Dawgs most likely. Metcalf will be able to fade into the background a little easier if he doesn't meet expectations. Is Mariners apathy at an all-time low? No one is talking about this team right now. They're arguably performing even worse than expected, and the slight glimmer of hope to start the season only raised expectations. On the other hand, the future is coming. We can see what they've got planned by looking at the minor leagues, and for some, that might be what's keeping hope alive.

Those of us who grew up in Seattle spend a lot of time reflecting fondly on the 1995 Mariners team, but many people don't get why we celebrate a team that didn't even make the World Series. It would be nice if the team could give us some new fond memories. The Thunder are unraveling, and nothing could make us in Seattle happier. It's been an underwhelming decade for a team with so much talent, but the same could be said for the Sonics in the 1990's. The Oakland A's took out a front page ad in the Perth, Australia newspaper, but it didn't go as planned.

Then, they discuss the powerful interview in Episode 42 with Steven Elliott author of War Story and the challenges our American heroes face when returning from duty. The guys chat about the front row fiascos involving Beyoncé and Nicole Curran & Kyle Lowry & Mark Stevens during the NBA Finals. Then, Mitch is joined by Mariners draftee Austin Shenton, Phil Barber from The Press Democrat in the Bay Area, and MLB 1st rounder from Lakeside HS Corbin Carroll. Finally, Mitch makes his U.S. Open pick and the guys close out by recalling some of the notable (and mostly uncomfortable) moments during the early days of the radio show!
