Sophie is truly a barrier-breaking photographer who is doing important and visually striking work. Our conversation touches on Sophie's photographic origins, her journey working as an assistant in New York City, how she broke out on her own and what it's like to work on a big, New York fashion campaign from pitch to shoot. We also talk about Sophie's work as a coach to the phtogoraphers as well as discussing the importance of visual representation for marginalised groups. This week it's a very special Meet the Founder episode with Zanna Roberts Rassi, one of the four co-founders of Milk Makeup, a cruelty-free, vegan makeup brand that's all about easy, effortless results. Zanna launched the brand back in 2016 alongside her husband, Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, as well as Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth. Zanna and I met during a hectic week of Milk Makeup events that saw her flying from New York to London to Paris all in the space of a few days. In this episode we discuss the early days of Milk Makeup, how Zanna stays fit and inspired - and I also ask how she balances living and working with her husband, all while having two children and a gig as an entertainment reporter for NBC! Zanna, originally from Manchester, UK, is honest and open about her work/life balance and of course shares her can't-live-without Milk Makeup products. Just a heads-up, this is not sponsored! I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly known as Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. If you want to see more of the Milk Makeup event head to my TikTok @charissekenion and if you loved listening then it would be amazing if you could leave a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen, because it really helps people find the podcast. Alexandra Nylund / @alexxinee From our guest: I'm a Swedish speaking Finn, born in Helsinki, Finland. Basically a viking from up North of the world. The population of Finland is only 5,5 million which is like half of the population of New York City. As most of us in this industry, I've always loved film, filmmaking and writing. Most of our home videos from my childhood are filmed by me, directed by me, annoyingly narrated by me. I loved playing with different settings, recreating scenes and I usually choreographed something and made my younger sister perform it with me. At the age of 6 we did our first "movie" in arts class, we had a great teacher, I remember wanting to narrate the sound of the bus doors so badly because I thought I could do the best bus sound everrrr lol. We drew the characters ourselves and recorded their dialogues and every sound effects with the teacher. That's what inspired me to film my own stuff at home. My great grandpa was a writer (wrote plays for theatre and poems and performed) and owned a radio store (I never knew him) otherwise most of my family members have been entrepreneurs or worked at the bank or stuff like that, so I didn't really know anyone who worked in this field and didn't know I could. Whenever I mentioned art related stuff or acting jobs to my grandpa he pretended like he couldn't hear me and asked about my other jobs. He was more academic. I realized the power of Facebook quite early on and contacted people online whenever I was traveling somewhere with my family and told them that I'll be in town and asked them could I please come on set for one day to learn, watch or help out for free. I was so young so people usually just thought it was cute and let me come. I did that in Europe and New York where I got to visit set in Milk Studios. (Alexi Lubomirski) He was absolutely wonderful. One of the best experiences in this industry. That sparked some hope. I've always wanted to act too, but at first it started as modeling, I was scouted for some small shoots then eventually asked to represent Finland and once Sweden in competitions abroad, at the age of 17, Top Model Worldwide (in the UK) and as 18, Miss Model of the World (in China) modeling wasn't really my priority but I thought ok I get to meet people, perform, maybe this will open some doors. I wanted to study film, got into film school, did some modeling on the side, got even more interested in acting. Took me long to find the courage to pursue it because the modeling affected how I was looked at. Thankfully I've always had many hobbies and speak different languages so that helped me open some doors. I could list plenty of skills. Started as an extra and worked my way to better roles. I've played the piano for a few years, sang in the choir, Girl Scouts, figure skating, handball, Savate, kickboxing, etc.... the list goes on so I used that and filmed my own material in the beginning. Then one day while I was working as Security between some jobs within media, I got home, I was exhausted, I saw my parents watch one of my favorite Nordic TV Dramas and something inside me told me to write the casting. I did, didn't think much of it since it was almost Christmas Eve... Well the next day while at a security shift, I noticed a missed call, it was casting, they asked me if I could come in ASAP to try out for a role.... so I said yes, did the casting, they told me they will let me know before Christmas (which was that weekend). They called me the next day after my audition and told me I was exactly what they had been looking for, so I was super excited. That only goes to show that you shouldn't take any no's personally. Once I wasn't even able to be background or extra and now I had my own character. Timing is everything. Keep believing. Myšlienky Jána Šifru mi vždy vybíjajú poistky. Ján sa venuje marketingovej stratégii a brand publishingu a je spoluzakladateľom agentúry Folk & Milk Studios, ktorú sám nazýva komunikačným štúdiom. Je viac než šikovným podnikateľom. Vlastne pomenovanie „podnikateľ“ ani nemá rád, smrdí mu to 90-tkami. No a ja ho interne nazývam filozof. When Milk Makeup launched in February 2016, it brought a refreshing yet irreverent take on the beauty world and promoted that being bold and different was to be celebrated. Born out of the NYC-based Milk Studios, Milk Makeup made a name for itself through daring and playful products like Kush Mascara and creating blotting papers that doubled as rolling papers for marijuana joints. Today, Milk Makeup is sold in 20 countries and is a Sephora U.S.-exclusive brand. It was acquired by a special-purpose acquisition vehicle from Waldencast in Nov. 2021 alongside Obagi skin care in a three-way transaction for $1.2 billion. “Milk Makeup started with the objective of broadening and challenging the definition of beauty. The founders talk about it not as a business but as a movement rooted in the core values of inclusion, diversity, creativity, self-expression,” Tim Coolican, CEO of Milk Makeup, said on this week's Glossy beauty podcast. Milk Makeup was founded by Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, fashion editor and entertainment reporter Zanna Roberts Rassi, creative director Georgie Greville and product developer Dianna Ruth. As the Milk Makeup team looks toward the future of its business post-acquisition, they are focusing business efforts towards merch and product collaborations, international expansion and what it means to be a “cool” brand.

In episode seventy one of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the co founder of Milk Makeup, Zanna Roberts Rassi.Zanna's very first job was as a model, after her boyfriend at the time secretly entered her into a modelling competition. While it was never really her passion, Zanna explains that it did open her eyes to the number of roles that existed (and still exist) behind the scenes. She spent most of her time on set asking questions of those around her- so it's no surprise that the job she eventually moved into was that of a journalist. It was while having her makeup done on set that Zanna realised she wanted to be part of the story telling of beauty, so she made herself known to the Beauty Editor of the magazine for which she was modelling and secured herself an internship. In time, Zanna became a Beauty Assistant and eventually Beauty Editor at Marie Claire magazine, during which time she met her now husband, Mazdack Rassi, co-founder of Milk Studios. Zanna then moved from London to New York and was soon asked to host a fashion segment on the Today Show. That segment became a launchpad for her television career, with Zanna now serving as E!'s style correspondent, a Today Show contributor and, previously, as a guest judge and mentor on Project Runway All Stars. It was in around 2013 that Zanna, her husband and their soon-to-be Milk co-founders Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth began to conceptualise what would eventually become Milk Makeup, craving easy, fun, multi-tasking makeup. They launched in 2016 with 85 products, and today Milk Makeup is available to consumers in over 130 countries. In this conversation, Zanna shares why Milk are intent on creating products that have never been seen before, the story of her stint as an undercover makeup artist at Paris Fashion Week, and why her first real encounter with beauty was reminiscent of, in her words, “advanced hypothermia.” Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Milk Makeup on Instagram at @milkmakeup.Follow Zanna Roberts Rassi on Instagram at @zannarassiStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

BLUE CAST by TENCEL™ / CARVED IN BLUE®

BLUE CAST Ep6 - Scott + TriciaBlue Blood on the GreenThis BLUE CAST Episode, Tricia Carey talks with Designer Scott MorrisonDesigner Scott Morrison was born and raised in Palm Springs, California, and attended the University of Washington, Seattle, on an athletic scholarship for golf.  A professional in the sport by age 23, he developed an interest in the clothing industry while in college, and soon accepted a position with local clothing designer, Derek Andrew. Two years later, in 1998, Scott was hired to oversee the sales and marketing of a new denim division of Mudd Jeans, based in New York City.  Scott chose to remain in the city and subsequently founded ‘Paper Denim & Cloth' in 1999.Scott's reputation in the industry grew over the next four years at Paper Denim.  After almost five years of developing, designing, and managing one of the first American success stories in the ‘Premium Denim' market, Morrison left Paper Denim to launch a new denim brand called ‘Earnest Sewn' and clothing line known as ‘An Earnest Cut & Sew' in 2004.  Both reflected his passion for quality, the Japanese aesthetic principle of wabi-sabi (i.e. beauty in imperfection), and his love of American heritage.Earnest Sewn became a modern day testament to quality, tradition, and the ever-present influence of denim in a continually evolving world culture.  Scott continued to develop his love of architecture and interior design during those years, designing all three of the Earnest Sewn stores, and the Milk Bar at Milk Studios in New York City.  Morrison chose to move on from the brand in 2009, and briefly helped with the rebranding and repositioning of Japanese cult denim label, ‘Evisu' from 2009 to 2010.In February 2011,  Morrison took what may be his most personal vision, and launched ‘3×1'.  The name “3×1” is derived from denim's standard weaving construction, the ‘3×1 Right Hand Twill', and also references Morrison's third venture, following Paper Denim and Earnest Sewn.  As a label, 3×1 is defined by its transparency, quality, and uniqueness with a location at 15 Mercer Street housing a 4,000 sq.ft. retail and gallery space, an entire manufacturing facility as well as their 3,200 sq.ft. design studio. In 2020 Scoot sold 3x1, and moved back to California with his family to return to his 1st love Golf and start a company called Radmor with his college roommate Bob Conrad. Radmor is the first brand in the golf industry to focus on the elimination of using ‘virgin' polyester on a garment level. and using Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) Organic and Extra-Long Staple (ELS) Pima cotton apparel while incorporating more environmentally responsible performance technologies, and thereby reducing our impact on the environment.Tricia Carey is a well-known advocate for innovation and sustainability in the textile and apparel industry. Twenty years ago, Tricia joined Courtalds Fibers NY to develop the marketing plan for a brand new fiber called TENCEL. When Lenzing Fibers acquired Tencel Inc. in 2004, Tricia became the USA Merchandising Manager for Womenswear, Menswear, and Intimates. Today, Tricia directs the Global Denim Segment, as well as the Americas Business Development teams, with a special interest in advancing more sustainable apparel development from fiber to consumer use. Tricia holds a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Merchandising from The Fashion Institute of Technology and certificates in Digital Marketing and Strategy from Cornell University and MIT. Her experience in fabric sales, global sourcing, and apparel business development make her an invaluable partner for brands and retailers who want to re-evaluate their supply chains and optimize the application and benefits of Lenzing's botanic fibers. Tricia also serves as Secretary of Accelerating Circularity Project, is a membe

Mazdack Rassi is the Co-Founder of Milk Studios, Milk Makeup, and Camp David. Over the last decade, Milk has gone from being a production and events space to a full-service creative beehive doing work in print, physical, and digital domains. Above all, however, the power of Milk has been its ability to cultivate a proactive and engaged community. We talk about: the codes and inclusive DNA of Milk, the duality between content and commerce, the evolution of fashion shows, the importance for brands to have point-of-views, and more.   Interviewed by Mortimer Singer.

Marjorie Goodson is breaking physical and creative boundaries with her luxurious, avant-garde coffee table book simply titled, MG. She is the daughter of Mark Goodson, the most popular game show creator and producer in the history of TV (Family Feud, The Price is Right, Match Game, To Tell The Truth, Beat the Clock) Marjorie is a proud and active supporter of The Actors Fund's Career Transition for Dancers, and has been an avid dancer since childhood. For Marjorie, dancing is her need, her want, her strength, her desire, her pleasure, her energy and sometimes her pain. “It’s my purpose and my passion, and it feeds my soul,” said Marjorie. With the release of MG, her book of photographic essays three years in the making, Marjorie most definitely pushes the artistic envelope to the pinnacle of creative performance. The book includes 153 commanding and empowering images by noted Romanian born art and fashion photographer, Andreea Radutoiu. The life-long dancer is captured – in glorious color, dramatic black and white and stimulating sepia tones – the magnificent and glorious 55-year-old Goodson in multiple dance postures in her passionate pursuit of life that goes beyond age and into the stratosphere of the emotional and physical connection to one’s inner self. “I feel my time is now,” says Goodson. There’s always tomorrow – there’s always an opportunity,” she says. “It’s tapping into your youth and having the courage to be creative and to live in the body physical.” MG is an artistic and visual collaboration between Goodson (concept and creative content), Radutoiu, and hair and makeup stylist, Torsten Witte (LaLa Land, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), set against some of Southern California’s most dramatic and historic locations including, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Milk Studios, the Dunes at Pismo and Zuma Beach. Goodson has always loved using her body to express art and with this exquisite tome, she hopes to inspire other women by letting them know they, too, can find their passion and confidence at any age.

MEET APRYL MILLER: Apryl Miller, daughter of a minister, was born in Chicago and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. She credits her art career to being raised in a large, creative, DIY family and her work reflects the tradition she was taught as a child, that of making something your own, by making it yourself. A lifelong poet, she came to visual art later in life, when the apex of her background resulted in crafting a vernacular art environment in which to raise her young daughters. This space has been described by Salon.com as “one of the most immersive, intricate, habitable art installations in the city…it is extremely important when looking at the history of immersive art installations”. Like a magician with an endless silk scarf, she has continued to produce with an unabated creativity. Ms. Miller was deemed an “artistic heavy hitter” by Time Out New York and her work has been showcased on MTV, NBC and various HGTV shows. She was profiled by Hyperallergic and Milk Made of Milk Studios. Her work has been featured in national and international publications including, E-Ratio Poetry Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, Working Mother, ASOS, The Sunday Times Style Magazine and Kontsvarlden, to name a few. A popular lecturer, she has spoken extensively on her work to The Princeton Historical Society, Docents of NYC, Bates Technical College, The University of Missouri and most notably, Open House New York.
