Who doesn’t love a great croissant? I certainly do. But I also love the other delicious treats that come out of the oven of Ali Spahr, pastry chef, and ace baker at Winner in Brooklyn. Ali studied baking in France at the esteemed Ferrandi cooking school in Paris, and when Daniel Eddy, the chef/owner of Winner (who also lived in Paris) decided to open up a café and bakery in New York, he wanted to re-create some of the “grab and go” pastries that France is known for, and tapped Ali with the task.I make it a point to go to Winner every time I’m in New York, and so do a lot of locals, as evidenced by the lines of people waiting patiently for one of her gorgeous Croissants, Pains au chocolat, stellar Monkey Bread, and Malted Chocolate Chip Cookies. The cookies are so good that Romain once bought eight of them!Join me for this podcast as I chat with Ali about baking in France and America, how she comes up with ideas for the “daily drop” of doughnuts and beignets, and the exciting news that she’s going to have her own dedicated baking space soon. You can listen in at the link at the top of this post, or on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform. How many licks does it take until you get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? And we end on politics. Which is poly meaning many, and tics meaning blood sucking vermen. There is genuine laughter and hilarity along the way and again this is part one of a two part silly series.

It's the third week of listener-requested Bread Month, but first Andrea wants to know if Stefin has seen or heard of a new Colombian berry: the Goldenberry. No, it's not the star of the next James Bond movie, it's a sweet-tart grape-tomato-sized berry that can be used in place of citrus fruits in desserts like lemon bars. Stefin reports on a UK study that proves the mental health benefits of baking bread. Is it the kneading, the mindfulness, or the wonderful aroma of home-baked loaves? Maybe all three! (And study researchers: If you need more test subects, please send us an email!) Next up, the duo review King Arthur's Hot-Buttered Soft Pretzels and agree that you shouldn't be alone when these come out of the oven. Then it's on to a sweet treat: Monkey Bread from Sally's Baking Addiction. Neither host know what to make of its name, but both are excited to tackle this overnight indulgence, baked in the podcast's favorite pan: the bundt! Finally, the Globetrotting Gourmet heads to Finland for a plethora of berry desserts, hot cheese and porridge bread. Ep. 227: Happy Holidays! In this episode, we're wishing you Happy Holidays, and discussing our family traditions, but also discussing the sad news that Stacy has been dealing with. Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 227: Happy Holidays Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Happy Holidays! We do a tradition of opening up one book each day leading up to Christmas! Last night we read Archie: Sloth to the Rescue, a seemingly out of print book by this author. Sarah is finishing up Paleo Principles this holiday season, making those final edits! Sarah intends this book to be a definitive guide for sharing the science on paleo to convince those obstinate family members. Stacy and Matt unfortunately lost her uncle after a long illness, and Matt's brother Andrew over the past two weeks. Andrew lived with us for 14 out of the last 15 years as an uncle, a friend, an extra husband, and an extra son. We were very very close, both us and the boys, and he was only 32. He was a joy to everyone who knew him and the most full of life person we've ever known. We will miss him a ton. Please talk to your loved ones and let them know how much you love them. Andrew moved out to live with his girlfriend earlier this year, but we had just seen him on Wednesday and spent time with him just before he died and we'll cherish that time with him. Our holiday traditions! We made Monkey Bread! Unfortunately, Legit Bread mix probably won't work. Get yourself some Coconut Milk Powder to make anything you want creamy! We also love to go to the National Christmas Tree! Sarah tries to do one Atlanta touristy thing while family is in town this season. They might go hiking with their national park pass We encourage you to explore your own local cities, be a tourist, and don't have regrets about what you've missed if you move! Google your best light displays in your areas! Find the best restaurants in your area, of all price levels! There are hidden gems! We're traveling in 2017, starting with California! The boys Christmas gifts are these. We think our next show will be about New Years' Resolutions! Stay tuned! Outro (58:07)     Support us by shopping through links on our sidebars, please!

Commentary #36 - Retardead (2008)

NETFLIX ALERT! This commentary was recorded while watching Retardead on Netflix. All instructions for syncing to the movie are in the commentary, so give a listen and follow the crystal clear steps for maximum holiday cheer. The second in our Holiday Season 2010 double-feature, Retardead is a more-or-less sequel to Monsturd. The mad scientist who created the poo creature from the first movie is back, this time injecting mentally challenged people with a serum that eventually turns them into zombies. Again, as far as gross/offensive premises are concerned, this is right on the money. Unfortunately, the same issues from Monsturd remain: the ultra-low budget home movie style is made unwatchable by the entire production winking at the audience and itself in every scene. Retardead is also longer than Monsturd, which doesn't help. The Film Pigs were pretty cranky by this point and in a much less forgiving mood. Which is the exact opposite of how you're supposed to behave during the holidays. Maybe we ate too much Monkey Bread.
