Medtech layoffs continue to mount. We'll use this episode to begin to explore external and internal challenges. Looking externally, longtime industry watcher Henry Soch, now an executive-in-residence at Matter, shares his concerns about the current and future ability of medical device companies – both big and small – getting new technologies into hospitals. You can read Soch's blog post here. https://healtech.blog/2022/12/28/health-care-disruptors-to-watch-in-2023/ Then, Joe Mullings, CEO of the Mullings Group, brings us inside his conversations with senior leaders of the medical device industry. In this interview, a sober Mullings reviews some of the mistakes large strategics have made. The result may be a few months of layoffs and cost-cutting. Mullings says companies could help themselves and the industry by not requiring their terminated employees to sign non-compete agreements. Mullings ends with some hopeful signs for medtech and useful tips for people looking to protect their careers. Thanks for listening to the DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast. Wow, I think we have a cool new format for the podcast! This was a fun one! Holly Scott, vice president and senior partner of the Mullings Group, an executive search firm, shared her industry expertise and insights during Chris Newmarker's Newsmakers. We covered a lot of ground there while reviewing news from Baxter, Medtronic, Titan Medical, Apple, as well as the many companies that reported layoffs over the coming week. Related topics centered around the waning lure of Working From Home, the move from tech to medtech, and what we have to do to build your own brand. We then examine the current layoff environment. While the situation may not be as bad as it seems on a macrolevel, every layoff brings some disruption to individual workers and families. Expert Coach Holly Scott offers some valuable advice for those who are looking to rebound from receiving a pink slip. She's got Five Steps! Thanks for listening to the DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast. Joe Mullings was the perfect guest to discuss how to win as an outsider when applying for jobs and planning your career. We discussed how professionals can transition into MedTech, health sciences, and startups. We also discussed the growing trend of interim work and how professionals can safely transition to gig work, with Joe providing several excellent examples that I am sure will clarify the importance of keeping this alternative way of working in the pipeline, especially as we reach our 50s and 60s. And we finished our chat discussing the importance of LinkedIn for career progression, and Joe shared his interesting 3-prone strategy on how to use LinkedIn to improve reputation and reach. The quality and output of an employee's work matters.Networking should occur when you don't need it. Be clever, bring value, give and not take, and create a brand around yourself. The workforce and global economy has changed because of the worldwide pandemic. The catalyst for people switching or leaving their jobs is to make more money. However, top performers want to move forward in their career from their own developmental perspective and grow their skills. The non-negotiables of working in the office or not depends on your degree and years of experience. “A good leader understands how to lead his people, but a great leader understands where they should be led.” “Often, people end up in one-sided opportunities where their vision and desires are disregarded and undervalued. Employees can work from home and work for a company located anywhere. Companies can hire employees located anywhere, expanding the market for both parties. Remote work gives fewer opportunities for community, collaboration, mentoring, and growth through coworker competition. A hybrid situation can bring some balance. What about the perception that a remote worker may be less productive? People who will cheat the system will do it wherever they are - at home or in the office. Hire based on character, not necessarily technical skills that can be taught. As a leader, what strategy should I have for what my workforce is going to be? Ask yourself - Who is the customer? What are you trying to deliver? Can it be automated, outsourced, or co-sourced? What is the customer experience you are trying to deliver? Work backward. Throw away your beliefs about the past and how it has been done. Determine the MVP (minimum viable product) to deliver to the customer and how it can be accomplished. Relating to workflow, some jobs might be expanded, and some might need to be eliminated.Top questions to answer to appeal to a rock-star recruit. Joe Mullings is one of the top minds and visionaries in talent search, specifically in the world of med-tech, who has revolutionized story-telling as a means to draw top talent to top organizations; Google & Johnson & Johnson were his first clients. The question he strives to answer for everyone seeking a career change or new role is "IF I go to work for this company, WHO will I become?"Joe believes that every individual should evaluate four things when considering a new opportunity: Market, Product/Service, Leadership & Mission and he breaks it all down in this episode. We talk about the value of surrounding ourselves with high-value people and building our network around them and the power that holds for us, the importance of finding real value and fulfillment in our work and how critical that is for staying power, and why mission and LIVING UP TO IT is critical for leaders - it only takes a few bad seeds in an otherwise great organization to bring it to it's knees if it's not nipped in the bud.We also deep dive into over-legislation as a result of the Me-Too Movement and it's impact on mentorship for women who are often already at a career disadvantage because of starting families and everything that entails, and why removing mentorships for women is causing females to miss out on opportunities, relationships, and important networking that can change the path of their career, bringing more female leaders to the forefront of U.S. companies. (Click here to read his article on this important topic.)Joe shares a valid and interesting perspective on defining, or attempting to define, bullying and toxicity in the workplace and how critical it is to understand the difference between attacking a problem vs. a person and why the latter is never acceptable. We also talk about his venture into the world of video & television production and how Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Tech will affect our future world of work, and why staying ahead of tech and being forward-thinking, flexible, continually learning and upskilling and being willing to reinvent ourselves will be critical to staying relevant, particularly for those who are subject to the negative impact of ageism in the workplace.Joe also shares what I feel is one of the most profound and thought-provoking answers to my closing question for all of my guests: As a leader, what quality of a gentleman/woman do you feel is most important to emulate and why? There's definitely a dash of 007 meets Thomas Crown in Joe Mullings . . . but he's not acting.Thank you for listening! Please leave a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. Neural Implant podcast - the people behind Brain-Machine Interface revolutions
Giovanni Lauricella is a Vice President of the Mullings Group which is a Medical Device Technology recruitment firm. He helps startups in the neurotech space find talented people from the most experienced down to the entry-level positions. Top 3 Takeaways: "Always pull on your network, always pull on that trust factor because people go to work for people. That's what they do, especially in startups and especially really early-stage startups" "If you want to be headhunted, make yourself available to be found, build your LinkedIn profile. Let us find you, there's tools and platforms that exist" "Just realize that there is a stigma. If you're 10 15, 20 years in corporate and you've never left and you want to go join a startup. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you start putting yourself into a box and breaking those shackles of corporate life. Going into a bootstrap, incredibly lean startup mentality, hair on fire, no resources to figure it out yourself can be hard" 1:00 "Do you want to explain what you do?" 4:15 "How are you able to get that talent and be able to consistently get talent?" 9:15 "What advice can you give in order to be headhunted by you? What is like the ideal candidate and what can candidates do to be more attractive?" 15:00 "So what's what can people do, learn or engage in order to build up that repertoire and be more desirable to you or do you just already have to be a CEO to be recruited for a CEO, be in regulatory to be recruited for regulatory? How do you break into that?" 25:00 "Is that kind of the better way to do it is learn skills in a big place and then go to a small place?" 29:30 " What, what should entrepreneurs, or what should companies be looking for?" 34:15 "Is there anything that we didn't talk about that you wanted to mention? Do you want to talk about your podcast as well?" https://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Sand-Hill-Road-Venture/dp/059308358X

[38:57] Joe shares the challenges he faced on his journey and the ultimate payoff [47:08] Great advice on content marketing and improving your practice and serve your customer on a higher level. [56:33] When is the best time to leverage your video and digital marketing strategies? [1:02:06] Will digital marketing replace the traditional telephone? Leveraging Digital Storytelling for Clients The Mullings Group takes employer branding to new levels. In order to attract talents, their marketing team would create digital publications that are media-rich and descriptive in content. Another way they do customer branding is through video storytelling. These videos are professionally produced for branding, messaging, and storytelling of their clients' technology and history for market awareness. How did it start? The concept was first introduced in a very large multi-million dollar project they headed for Google and Johnson & Johnson when building out a surgical robotic system. Since they were unable to show the robot or even the inside of the Google / Verily facility, they had to create a digital storytelling strategy on “who you would become” when you went to work there. And the rest is history. Learn the process and how it actually evolved from long-form videos to short clips, how organic growth was driven, and how the traction they got impacted their business. Joe shared how he believes this is important for headhunters. One example is how Inbound traffic on these videos will shorten the timescales to complete searches. Joe explained “Even when we had to make outbound calls, when we made the outbound calls, we didn't have to spend the first 30 to 45 seconds of that phone call on who [the client] was, who we were, and why that sort of career part will be a good one for you to consider.” This actually led to them developing a process called Demand Gen they were able to generate fees in 8 figures exclusively on their search business. The 4 Keys to Success with Digital Media Another phenomenal feat that was shared in our conversation is when Joe and his team travelled across the globe and created an Anthony Bourdain style documentary. Joe revealed that this is out of selflessness with the intention of propping up the health tech industry. The exposure it got was phenomenal. Selflessness is one what Joe considers as ‘keys' to success, which are: Discipline Strategy Thought Selflessness Hear it from Joe as he gives context to these key factors. He also told me about what drives him, the challenges he encountered and why it was all worth it. He also reveals the ROI from digital media. Joe said, “I have never balanced a chequebook in my life. And what that means is money is never a driver. It is what game are we gonna play and on what field.” Joe Mullings Bio and Contact Info Career expert Joe Mullings has been building companies and careers since 1989. Shirley X. Moore is a native of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico but was raised in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, RI. Shirley migrated with her family at the tender age of five, and she soon began interpreting for her mother and friends. Shirley believes she has a unique perspective when it comes to interpreting because she is a self-proclaimed “outlier” (Gladwell, 2008). Shirley has spent her entire life bridging communication for limited English speaking people within different human service systems. She believes her experiences as a child help her provide the best interpretation and support for her clients. Shirley started working at the age of fourteen when she was hired as the Bilingual Outreach Worker at a local community center. Through that position, she learned to serve the community at large with the skills she had been developing for years. In 2006, Shirley began her professional interpreting career at Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Boston where she worked with local, state and federal organizations and businesses to bridge communication between professionals and their clients. In 2007, Shirley volunteered at Praise Tabernacle Church to share God's love with the homeless population. While there, she started two programs one that gave make-overs to homeless women every six weeks. Another, which helped individuals get back into the workforce by assisting with interviewing skills, resume writing and job search. Shirley is one of the founding members of the RI Dream Center, a faith-based non-profit that supports homeless individuals in the Providence area. In 2012, Pastor Shirley became the Executive Director of the RI Dream Center. It was at that time that she noticed that most of the people she supported had one thing in common, they came from broken homes. That's when she began to shift careers into supporting and stabilizing families. Shirley has served on the Board of Directors of Young Leader's Fellowship; the Mayor Tavares' (Providence, RI) Ministerial Committee; has been Wraparound Facilitator at Family Service of RI; the Operations Manager of the RI Renegades; Director of Operations at The Mullings Group; Training Consultant for Bootstrap Bootcamp; Marriage on the Rock Facilitator and a Domestic Violence Advocate at the Women's Resource Center; she's currently a Founding Member and the Director of Operations at the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Leadership and coaches entrepreneurs on business launch and development. Shirley graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in Human Services from Springfield College and possesses a Master's of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership. Shirley is an experienced Interpreter serving Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese speaking individuals for over fifteen years. In 2016, Shirley partnered with her friend, Zoila Bernal, to launch Be Moore Interpreting because they believe that there is a way to “Creatively Bridge Communication.” They would like to transform the interpreting field through consistently evaluating their services and searching for the hidden outliers within the world community. Be Moore Interpreting led Shirley to launch her new project- The Rail, a coworking space in downtown Pawtucket. The Rail aims to support urban entrepreneurial dreams by removing some of the barriers to entry for “unlikely” entrepreneurs. Shirley believes The Rail is only an evolution of the work she started so many years ago, before she addressed basic needs, now she helps her community identify creative ways to leave lasting legacies.
