Does it matter where on the body someone cuts, whether on typically more visible sites such as the forearm and wrist, or in typically more concealed areas, such as the upper arm and torso? Is there a relationship between where someone cuts on their body and their likelihood of continuing to engage in the behavior? In this episode, Dr. Gardner discusses her research on the psychology of self-injury location and where on the body one chooses to self-injure as well as intrapersonal (emotional) reasons and interpersonal (social) reasons for engaging in self-injury and self-harm.Learn more about Dr. Gardner and her work at https://www.uclan.ac.uk/academics/dr-kathryn-gardner, and follow her on Twitter @KathrynJGardner. Sean is joined by Cassidy Cash from ‘That Shakespeare Life' podcast to discuss ‘How to behave in Britain' (1943). Whilst discussing this training film for United States Armed Forces in the Second World War, they navigate pub etiquette in Britain, Shove Ha'penny, and Pounds, Shillings and Pennies. Although a nostalgic film, there is a section when the narrator of the film discusses the differences between British and American's treatment of black soldiers in their respective countries. This societal difference is broached in the film and discussed in this podcast. The section contains the use of the term ‘coloured people'. This is quoted purely as part of a historical discussion and review of the film. A film which is a heavy slice of nostalgia but which is tinged with the whole situation around race relations. Guest Biography: Cassidy Cash is a historical map illustrator and Shakespeare historian. She is the host of That Shakespeare Life, the #2 Shakespeare history podcast in the world as ranked by Welp Magazine and host of the YouTube series DIY History where she introduces you to games, recipes, and crafts from Shakespeare's lifetime that you can try out for yourself at home. The idea for this episode was sparked by the quote"Surround Yourself With Women Who Would Mention Your Name in a Room Full of Opportunities" A lot of times, especially as entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, mompreneurs, we get caught up in the comparison game and it can be super discouraging and disheartening. As we wrap up 2021 on the homestretch of Q4 - we can look at the numbers and feel like we haven't done as well or been as successful as others who *seem* to be crushing it across the board. This episode is a sort of exposé of the reality behind the Smoke & Mirrors of Social Media and why having a ton of followers doesn't always mean what you think.Michelle shares some of her experiences dealing with women, some good, some not so good, why healthy competition is normal and good for us, but why it's important to see the signs when someone is a one-way street and not willing to give back to help you in return. You know them; everything is all about them, big ego, ME ME ME ME, they talk about supporting other women but in the end, are self-serving and opportunistic. She shares insights from a recent article in the New York Times by Elizabeth Harris: "Millions of Followers? For Book Sales, ‘It's Unreliable". The article cites the example of Billie Eilish and why having a huge social media following doesn't necessarily = sales, In many cases, celebrity books are huge flops. The article goes on to explain that perhaps the books don't provide anything beyond what they've already put on Instagram (the same old story kind of thing). It could be that the followers (the ones who aren't bots, or paid for) aren't terribly engaged with what they post to begin with.Crucially, executives say, there is also an increasing awareness in the industry about the difference between the number of followers and how engaged they really are. (Check the likes and comments; they're often from the same group of people with little authentic dialogue or engagement that spurs conversation in the thread - often just a bunch of cheerleading quotes from people in their pod.)Michelle shares how she's experienced this first-hand with this podcast. Ironically, some of the most downloaded episodes were guests who did NOT have a large social following, and the episodes with others with hundreds of thousands of followers were among the least downloaded. The episodes where the guest spoke on fresh topics and shared organic content had much further reach, engagement and response than others that were repeating the same story that they'd told on every other podcast interview they'd done. There's a big difference between repurposing content and regurgitating it; the first is a smart marketing tactic, the latter can come across as a bad marketing pitch in a world where we are constantly inundated with ads and Rule of 7 content that is over-saturated and a turn-off to our information overloaded brains. She shares the experience of attending a LinkedIn Live co-hosted by a handful of *big name influencers* on the platform with a combined following of around 500,000 - less than half of 1% of their audience showed up for the event. Not what you'd expect, and that's exactly the point; smoke and mirrors.Rather than get caught up in the comparison game, focus on examining your year, your efforts, your work, your goals and tactics and celebrate YOUR growth, regardless of how small or insignificant it may seem to others! We did just that and here's what we found: a 113% increase in newsletter subscribers,115% increase in visitors to our website, 192% increase on social media, and a 487% increase in podcast downloads! Thank you ALL for your support - we appreciate each and every one of you!Thank you for listening! Please leave a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. Joe Mullings is one of the top minds and visionaries in talent search, specifically in the world of med-tech, who has revolutionized story-telling as a means to draw top talent to top organizations; Google & Johnson & Johnson were his first clients. The question he strives to answer for everyone seeking a career change or new role is "IF I go to work for this company, WHO will I become?"Joe believes that every individual should evaluate four things when considering a new opportunity: Market, Product/Service, Leadership & Mission and he breaks it all down in this episode. We talk about the value of surrounding ourselves with high-value people and building our network around them and the power that holds for us, the importance of finding real value and fulfillment in our work and how critical that is for staying power, and why mission and LIVING UP TO IT is critical for leaders - it only takes a few bad seeds in an otherwise great organization to bring it to it's knees if it's not nipped in the bud.We also deep dive into over-legislation as a result of the Me-Too Movement and it's impact on mentorship for women who are often already at a career disadvantage because of starting families and everything that entails, and why removing mentorships for women is causing females to miss out on opportunities, relationships, and important networking that can change the path of their career, bringing more female leaders to the forefront of U.S. companies. (Click here to read his article on this important topic.)Joe shares a valid and interesting perspective on defining, or attempting to define, bullying and toxicity in the workplace and how critical it is to understand the difference between attacking a problem vs. a person and why the latter is never acceptable. We also talk about his venture into the world of video & television production and how Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Tech will affect our future world of work, and why staying ahead of tech and being forward-thinking, flexible, continually learning and upskilling and being willing to reinvent ourselves will be critical to staying relevant, particularly for those who are subject to the negative impact of ageism in the workplace.Joe also shares what I feel is one of the most profound and thought-provoking answers to my closing question for all of my guests: As a leader, what quality of a gentleman/woman do you feel is most important to emulate and why? I invited Heather on the show to share her inspiring story from making it to the C-Suite, to being fired by a workplace villain, to her successful career as an entrepreneur and to chat about her new book.Heather talks about how she launched her personal brand about five years ago, (which is likely one of the reasons she was fired, as there were a few envious villains at work who resented her success with her brand), and how she was able to leverage that platform she had created for herself after she was fired. Heather wrote and self-published her first book "Confidence Creator" just five months after she was fired, or, as she would say, after SHE fired HER villain. Heather talks about what she's learned from both male & female mentors in her career, the importance of trusting you gut, not only in business, but in our personal lives, as well as the experience and knowledge she's gained both as a self-published author and a traditionally published one.For anyone who purchases her new book during pre-sale, Heather is offering an add-on gift bundle valued at $500.00 for FREE. Tales From A Vintage Wardrobe

In this episode, Melanie shares how, as VP of Marketing for a luxury automotive group, she launched her idea to leverage social media, not just as a company, but for the personal brands of those on the sales team, by creating and hosting a Social Media Workshop to provide the tools, know-how and ideas they would need to create their own social media brand. After struggling with buy-in from the team, Melanie found the two main reasons professionals are often hesitant to create a personal presence on social: 1.) Fear and 2.) Lack of know-how & confidence. In true leadership style, Melanie decided to walk the talk and set out on her own personal brand journey in social media marketing to be an example for and encouragement to her team. Then the pandemic hit and 90% of the staff at her dealership were laid off. That was when Melanie decided she needed to go all-in on her personal brand, so that, in the event that she, too, found herself unemployed, she would have a professional digital footprint and brand, not just in her industry, but as a powerful presence on platforms like LinkedIn. Melanie employed her three critical pillars: having a strategy, providing value-added content, and being consistent. It paid off - in about a year, she went from 3,000 followers to 89,000! She keeps it real by admitting the amount of work and time involved (it's a full-time job) and that success doesn't happen overnight; you have to commit to the long-haul, create a routine and be fully committed to reap the benefits.Melanie shares the struggles many of us faced when the pandemic hit - of becoming a remote worker overnight, with the additional stress of having to manage remote learning for her two young daughters. She decided early on to channel her efforts toward building the narrative she wanted told about herself online (which she reminds us is within our power to do as well), as a strong, independent woman and mother, and to be an example to her daughter's as she forged her way down that new path of building her personal brand, which is now her professional one as well. Melanie also used that unique time with her daughter's to write and publish her children's book, a project they were closely involved with from start to finish. The biggest leap of faith and most important risk Melanie took during the pandemic was to leave her corporate role and, with the support of those closest to her, launch her company Melanie Borden, LLC. She shares how she had wanted to do so seven years ago, but multiple factors caused that plan to go awry. When I asked her what the incredibly successful Melanie would tell her 18 year-old self, she replied "Trust your gut!". I couldn't agree more.Melanie's goal is to help others avoid the "Trial and Terror" experience she had in navigating social media as a newbie by offering her highly successful strategies and services. Manga are comics or graphic novels originating from Japan. Not only do manga reveal and reinforce cultural values, beliefs, and norms, particularly in Japan, but they can also be used as a teaching tool and source of information. Manga and other comics can be used in medicine to learn and teach about illness and to build empathy. They also have the power to shape public understanding of mental health issues, even nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI).In this episode, Dr. Yukari Seko explains how self-injury and the characters who engage in the behavior are portrayed in Japanese manga. She also discusses the importance of manga within Japanese culture. Below is a reference (with a link) to her research paper along with a breakdown of common genres of manga and, based on her study, just how many characters within each genre engage in self-injury and self-harm:GENRES OF MANGA (& the number of characters depicted who self-injure, based on Dr. Seko's study):1.  shōjo: comics for girls 18 and younger (written for girls, by girls) - depicted 10 characters who self-injure2.  shōnen: comics for boys  18 and younger (written for boys, by boys, about boys) - depicted 0 characters3.  seinen: comics for young males age 18-30 - depicted 6 characters, portrayed as menhera (a derivation of "mental health-er," a person with mental instability or "mentally vulnerable damsels in distress")4.  josei: comics for young females 18-30 - depicted 1 character5.  Boy's Love: a subgenre of josei manga featuring erotic relationships between male characters - depicted 1 character6.  seijen:  comics for grownups - depicted 0 characters7.  redicomi: "Lady's Comic" for adult women - depicted 0 characters8. slice-of-life: genre that features realistic depictions of everyday life.Seko, Y., & Kikuchi, M. Why is it important to talk about nonsuicidal self-injury among LGBTQ individuals? Just how prevalent is self-injury among those who identify as LGBTQ? And are there differences in rates of self-injury among sexual minority individuals (e.g., Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual) compared to those that are Transgender or Gender Diverse?  In this episode, Dr. Lindsay Taliaferro discusses risk and protective factors for engaging in self-injury among LGBTQ individuals. How can writers treat these characters? Should they be written any differently than other characters? What are some different ailments that can happen to people that can affect the plot?
