Our guest, Barbara Sommer Feigin, has led a truly remarkable life. Plus, she is one of our own—a proud and feisty woman of a certain age. Her early years, however, were different than most of us older Americans who grew up in the U.S. during the mid-century. In fact, Barbara evolved from a young refugee (coming to this country as a toddler whose parents lived through the horrors of Nazi Germany), to become an uber successful woman in advertising. Moreover, she achieved this rise when successes for women in business were far from the norm. And she accomplished all of that while rearing three young boys and tending to her husband who had suffered two serious strokes as a young man. Hers is a true story of love and determination that is sure to inspire you and Barbara joins us to share all about it. So, if you enjoy a riveting story about a woman overcoming great challenges to live a life of purpose and meaning, you'll want to make sure you catch this show!

How did an eBay search lead to the discovery of a lost classic of comics? How can art help us build a better America? Artist and teacher Keith Mayerson joins the show to talk about co-editing the amazing new book, Frank Johnson: Secret Pioneer of American Comics, Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics) and his multi-decade "wordless novel" in paintings, My American Dream (Karma). We get into how Frank Johnson made thousands of pages of comics in private, never published, and may have created the first American comic-book in history, whether he constitutes an Outsider Artist, how his creative legacy contrasts with Henry Darger's, and what it means to make a lifelong body of work with no sense or expectation of a readership. We also get into Keith's My American Dream project, its roots in 9/11 & the GWBush era, how his paintings play off of each other like panels in a comic (and how the curation of art exhibitions is a form of comics), the mash-up of key cultural figures of modern America, his art-subject trinity of James Dean, Elvis, and Keanu Reeves (and his story of meeting Keanu), how My American Dream works to synthesize aspects of Warhol & Rembrandt (& Haring), and the vitality of his painting of Kermit the Frog on a bicycle and the significance of the Muppets in his vision of America. Plus we discuss Keith's art & comics upbringing, the process of building comics programs at SVA and USC, his cult classic queer horror graphic novel with Dennis Cooper, the artistic act of suturing in to his subjects, why the job of art is keeping hope alive, how he felt when he found a parallel, secret history of comics taking place solely in one person's mind, and a lot more. I've written and talked about how our time in covid was like a collective time out for many of us, and if you've been following and listening a while you know during my timeout, I restructured a huge part of my life. I was delighted to find yet another example of someone who did this as well who wanted to share their journey with you. Everett Morley took her time during covid to make changes with her career and relationship. In this episode she shared that story as well as how meditation and time alone in nature has been helpful for her. Here were some things I took away from this fun episode: It's important to recognize if a job, relationship, or even our location isn't right for us. It doesn't have to be terrible, but if it's not lighting you up, you may be wasting your life Find your way to soul search. To look inside to discover what you DO want Meditation and time alone in Nature were helpful for Everett Chapter one of my book, AfterLIFE, Waking Up from My American Dream was called "Trust Yourself" and that message was reinforced by Everett today. How do you feel in your gut when you know the next day is Monday versus when it's Friday? If we're not careful, we'll spend 5 days of our lives looking forward to 2, and 40 plus years looking forward to however many years we can live in retirement. We're taught from an early age that's the norm. For me, I learned it from family, friends, T.V. shows, that I was supposed to dread Monday and LOVE Friday. That I needed to work hard to get a job that paid money so that I could have enough to quit it one day. Love what you do Because I'm a problem solver, I dove into a finance in college and as a career because I was determined to understand this puzzle. If figuring out freedom was the goal, I was “supposed to” strive towards, why not go right to the rule book? So I did, and I was lucky enough to go to work for a company who specialized in working with small, closely held businesses. I was trained to help them with many things, and retirement was one of them. What I learned from them was invaluable. I was shocked how many times I'd ask the business owner I met about their retirement goals. Lots of times they told me that they had no intention of retiring. They loved what they did! Now, it's easy to imagine someone doing something glamourous like being a artist, writer, or actor saying such a thing, but an owner of a concrete company, a restaurant, or a machine shop?! 20 something year old Carlo was surprised and curious. I asked them why, and they told me! Most often people in this situation had spent a lifetime building something and they were proud of it. They loved their customers and employees. The derived a sense of purpose from continuing to do this thing they had devoted their life to and a sense of satisfaction from how this business impacted the families of their team, as well as their own. So, if you are lucky enough to find something you are really good at, that gives you a sense of purpose and meaning, and ultimately you feel you have nothing to retire From, then you've hit the jackpot! Know Your Why Another way to find more meaning in the days of your life, is to have a really clear understanding of why you are doing it and then align your life, habits, and behavior around that why. I consider myself lucky to have found a career that allowed me to build a business that aligned with my skills and passion. It was because of that alignment and my decision to start a business) that I was good enough at it (and lucky) to have the success I wanted. But, in my heart of hearts I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do forever. I knew it was something I had to do for money and I didn't see a path that allowed me to immediately change what I was doing without putting my family in a bad financial situation. In AfterLIFE, Waking Up from My American Dream, I walked through the changes I made with my business to bring it into alignment with my higher purpose and clearer vision, and these are the actions that ultimately brought me the financial freedom I had been looking for. Bonus A key point though is that even if you absolutely love what you do, you should do your planning for your financial freedom in case you don't get to decide when your done. Your health, the economy, your company, or any number of things could take away your ability to keep doing what you do...or you could find yourself burned out one day. I've even seen people's desire to work change when grandkids come along. A friend once told me that the best decision in life is the one that gives us the most options...and building your financial freedom does just that. Good luck to you! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carlopodcast/support
Saying YES to our dreams and stepping forward in that direction, even if we don't have the answers or feel ready, is SO important. Diane Marie did just that and she shares her beautiful stories and wisdom with us here. I was inspired and so grateful for our time together, and I know you will love her story too. Here are some key lessons I loved hearing and want to capture: Years before she knew she wanted to create this company that captured her love of candles, travel, and Italy (where she was born and raised for the first 9 years of her life) Diane Marie knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Even though she didn't know in exactly what way, she said yes to that dream and began reading and studying to be prepared When the idea came she was ready and launched into it (during covid like I did with this project!) Diane Marie shared how journaling has been an important part of her journey to: set goals, reflect on her progress, record her emotions, and cultivate an attitude of gratitude to keep her confidence up as she moved in the direction of her dreams. This episode is so fun and full of stories and advice you can take action on. Give it a listen and please check out Italy in a Jar Candles and give her a follow on social media and her newsletter! “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” ― Henry Ford Welcome Back to It's the Journey! Children usually have many things they love to do, just for fun. Playing, in other words. When we grow up we sometimes forget that. Often, we set aside those joys as we take on "adult" activities. Our many roles and responsibilities often take all our time and energy. In AfterLIFE, Waking Up from My American Dream, I told my story of how I rediscovered so many aspects of myself that had been put away in a shoe box. Important parts of me were in the dark and forgotten, only to be rediscovered after I went through a crisis in my life. My guest for the next 2 episodes is Stephen Finlay Archer! Stephen is a beautiful example of someone who was able to feed those other aspects of himself over the years so that when he retired as an engineer, the writer inside him was able to grow and evolve to the present day! Stephen is a prolific writer and lifelong learner, and has combined those traits to write many Irish historical fiction novels, including a series called "The Irish Clans" which covers the Irish revolutionary period from 1915 to 1923. If you like fiction, you'll love Stephen's stories...especially if you are interested in Irish culture and history! In addition to his novels, Stephen also has a weekly blog where he shares interesting historical events with his readers. Stephen has a deep interest and love for his Irish roots and, like me with my Italian history stories, loves to share what he learns! Please check them out on his links below. I hope you enjoy this conversation and learn as much from Stephen as I did! Join me on my first totally in the field interview with Micah Johnson! I took my equipment to Idle Hands Grooming Company to catch up with Micah. Micah was my very first guest on It's the Journey. During our conversation in Episode 2, Micah told stories about the experiences in his life that lead him to co-founding his own hair salon. When he and his business partner, Andy Prost, pulled the trigger, the global pandemic began. They just celebrated their one year anniversary of being open (July 13) and I wanted to capture some of the lessons Micah took away from dealing with uncertainty as he pursued his dream. Sometimes we procrastinate or kill our dream because of fear. Micah and his team carried on and he shared some lessons here. Enjoy, like, share, and say YES to your Dreams. Also, book an appointment now with the link above. Micah and his team take care my whole family and they are just wonderful people. "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Alan Watts Welcome back to It's the Journey! With the book AfterLIFE, Waking Up from My American Dream and this podcast, I have been working hard to provide lots of inspiring examples of people pursuing their dreams in order to help inspire listers like you! Born and raised in Tennessee, songwriter Will Hoge made his name honing a blend of soulful Americana and heartland rock & roll. After spending his childhood in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, he left Tennessee to study history at Western Kentucky University. Music drew him back home, however, and he relocated to Nashville to assemble a band that included former Georgia Satellites guitarist Dan Baird. Hoge then cut his teeth on the Southern bar circuit and issued a live release, 1999's All Night Long, before inking a deal with Atlantic Records. *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Remond Show is sponsored by: Big Dot Lighting - Commercial LED Lighting Specialists -and- Bruce Cline Home Loans & Mortgage Refinance | Movement Mortgage www.musiciansmortgage.com With the label's support, he entered Memphis' famed Ardent Studios to record his official debut, Carousel, with engineer John Hampton (the Replacements, Gin Blossoms). The album was released in 2000, and Blackbird on a Lonely Wire followed in 2003 (albeit without Baird, who'd left due to the band's demanding tour schedule). Record sales were slim, though, and Hoge found himself receiving minimal attention from his label. Requesting release from his contract, Hoge was made a free agent. Following his departure from the Atlantic roster, Hoge combined a relentless tour schedule with a string of independent releases, from live albums and brief EPs to a full-fledged studio effort (2006's The Man Who Killed Love). Rykodisc took note of Hoge's work, particularly his 200-plus shows per year, and signed the artist. Draw the Curtains, Hoge's fourth studio album and first effort for Rykodisc, was released in October 2007, followed by -- what else? -- an aggressive fall tour. Recording sessions for another record began in 2008, but work was temporarily postponed on August 20th, when a scooter accident left Hoge severely injured. Months of physical therapy followed. Hoge focused on his recovery for the remainder of 2008, eventually returning to the studio project in 2009 and releasing The Wreckage later that year. Hoge put out his seventh studio album, the appropriately titled Number Seven, in September 2011. He and co-writer Eric Paslay received 2012 Academy of Country Music (ACM), Country Music Association (CMA), and Grammy nominations for Best Country Song for "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," the opening track on the Eli Young Band's album Life at Best. In December of 2012, Hoge released the digital-only EP Modern American Protest Music, which included the songs "Folded Flag" and "Ballad of Trayvon Martin." In October of 2013, Never Give In, his eighth full-length, was released by Cumberland Recordings. The album's first single, "Strong," was tapped by Chevy for its 2014 Silverado pickup truck ad campaign. He followed it in 2015 with the album Small Town Dreams, which landed at number 15 on the country charts. While touring in support of the record, Hoge hit a career wall. He enjoyed writing songs for others and playing live, but he had fallen out of love with being in a band. What followed was a period of introspection. He let his working group go and took off on a cross-country jaunt playing solo. Reclaiming the joy that inspired him to make music a vocation in the first place, he began writing while traveling. He reentered the studio with an ace cast of studio players and completed Anchors. The self-produced 11-track set was previewed in June 2017 by the single "Little Bit of Rust" (a duet with Sheryl Crow), and followed two weeks later by "Baby's Eyes." The album proper appeared in August from Eldo/Thirty Tigers. Hoge quickly followed Anchors with My American Dream, which appeared in October 2018. 2020's Tiny Little Movies was a thematically and musically diverse LP, including personal numbers about failing romances and broadsides against political and spiritual dishonesty. My guest today is former, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, mayor of San Antonio, Texas and presidential candidate, Julián Castro. Today’s conversation is personal. Growing up in San Antonio, his love of the city, example of his grandmother’s devotion to family and hard work and his mom’s commitment to social justice and activism instilled a deep reverence for public service. He’d eventually head to college and then law school with his twin brother, Joaquin, before returning to San Antonio to immerse himself in the pursuit of making the city he loved the best, most equitable and inclusive place possible. He eventually became the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city at the time, before rising up in the world of politics, But, for him, it wasn’t about politics, it was about service, about honoring the examples of his mom and nana to help others. Much if this story is shared in Secretary Castro’s memoir, An Unlikely Journey: Waking Up from My American Dream. He currently hosts Lemonada Media's hit podcast, Our America with Julián Castro. We dive into all of this in today’s moving, wise and open conversation about the role of family, service and connection. You can find Julián Castro at:Our America podcast : https://smarturl.it/ouramericapodcastInstagram : https://www.instagram.com/juliancastrotx/Check out offerings & partners: Nutrafol: Nutrafol.com - code GOODLIFEReliefband: reliefband.com - code GOODLIFE AquaTru: AquaTru.com - code GOODLIFE

Will Hoge is the laudable exception to that, as evidenced by his compelling new collection of socially conscious songs. Julian Castro graduated high school a year early, won election to city council while he was still in law school, and became San Antonio's youngest mayor at age 27, before eventually serving as President Obama's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and making Hillary Clinton's short-list for VP in 2016. He talks about his family's American dream including the remarkable story of how his Grandmother fled the violence of the Mexican Civil War for America and the values that his political activist mother instilled in he and his twin brother Joaquin. He shares how he and Joaquin tied each other in their first election for Stanford University’s student senate and how a young Julian Castro ran for San Antonio city council and WON by winning over elderly voters. He talks about his initiatives as Mayor to promote citizen engagement and pre-K education, why he first turned down a cabinet appointment in the Obama Administration, and what he calls the “weird experience” of being vetted to be Hillary Clinton’s running-mate in 2016. Plus he talks seriously about running for the top spot in 2020 and lays out his playbook for beating Donald Trump.
