Since 2017 Fawn Weaver has been building a new global whisky brand from Tennessee in the US, called Uncle Nearest. It stands out because it is inspired by the first known African American master distiller, Nathan “Nearest” Green. He was a former slave who worked very closely with Jack Daniel. It's a story that fascinated Weaver when she first learned about it in 2016, so much so that she relocated from Los Angeles to Tennessee with her husband to learn more about the Green family – and ultimately launch a new spirits brand. That brand hit annual revenues of $100m in 2022. She is something of a trailblazer herself, as a woman of colour leading a major spirits company. She discusses her business journey - from leaving home at age 15 in Los Angeles to the strategies that helped her create a successful challenger brand, in an industry notoriously difficult to break into… Hosted on Acast. In 2016, Jack Daniel's announced the company would make changes to its official history. They planned to honor Nathan “Nearest” Green, the formerly enslaved man who taught the real Jack Daniel to make whiskey in the 1860s. They didn't realize, however, that this announcement would cause an uproar — or that it would inspire a woman named Fawn Weaver to set out on a quest to unearth the full story of Nearest Green. This week, we talk with Fawn about what drew her to this story and what she's doing to honor Green's legacy, with help from his great-great-granddaughter Victoria Eady Butler. This episode originally aired on October 5, 2020, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, and Tomeka Weatherspoon. In this episode we talk about how Jack Daniel left home as a young boy and was taken in by a pastor with a distillery side hustle run by a master distiller and enslaved man named Nathan "Nearest" Green, also known as Uncle Nearest. Young Jack became the assistant to Uncle Nearest and Uncle Nearest became like a father to Jack. When Jack was an adult, he took the opportunity to buy the distillery and took care of Nearest and his family for generations to come. The story of Uncle Nearest was lost until the 150th anniversary of Jack Daniels Whiskey when the New York Times released an article about the true history of the company. An author named Fawn Weaver read this article and had to know more.Set on writing a book on the amazing story of Jack Daniel and Uncle Nearest, Fawn traveled to Lynchburg, TN and ended up buying the farm that housed the original distillery. It didn't take long before she knew her true calling was in starting a whiskey company to honor Nearest Green and that's how Uncle Nearest Whiskey was born.Listen to hear more about this tale of love and respect in an unexpected time!Uncle Nearest Whiskey: https://unclenearest.com/Jack Daniels Coffee: https://www.jackdanielscoffee.com/Further media:https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/26/dining/jack-daniels-whiskey-nearis-green-slave.htmlhttps://gastropod.com/the-secret-history-of-the-slave-behind-jack-daniels-whiskey/https://www.npr.org/2021/10/01/1042481944/uncle-nearest-premium-whiskey-fawn-weaver-Buy a mystery box of past products that we have tried on the podcast! Forget what you thought you knew about Tennessee Whiskey. Up until today, you may not have known that the Godfather of Tennessee Whiskey wasn't the big-name brand you thought. Instead, it was an African American man by the name of Nathan "Nearest" Green, that began distilling as a slave. He became known as Uncle Nearest and for years, it wasn't realized how iconic he was to the whiskey making process. Fast forward to today, where the distillery named after him features an award-winning Master Blender in Victoria Eady Butler, who is Nearest Green's great-great-granddaughter. We sat down for an interview with Victoria Eady Butler to talk a variety of things. However, it wasn't all whiskey, as we started off talking about her beloved Tennessee Titans. That included a little discussion on rookie quarterback Will Levis, running back Derrick Henry, and her expectations for this year. Victoria is a diehard fan and season ticket holder. Her passion for the Titans is almost as strong as her passion for whiskey. Old-Fashioned Football and the master blender of Uncle Nearest distillery talk about the history of Nearest Green. We also talk about the distillery and how Fawn Weaver started it all in 2017. The history is rich and the whiskey is premium. The whole story, distillery, and the whiskey are phenomenal. The year is 1947, Jackie Gleason is seated at a bar having a drink. Next to him, his good friend and fellow entertainment icon… Frank Sinatra. Gleason motions to the bartender. “Have you tried Jack Daniel's?” he asks his rat pack associate. Sinatra shakes his head no and tries it that night, for the very first time. His introduction to the Tennessee distilled whiskey, in many ways, will be the country's introduction – to the liquor and the brand. For years after this night, Sinatra would drink Jack Daniel's on stage, where he would often refer to it as “the nectar of the gods and the best booze in the world.” And… it becomes what it is today – a major, multinational corporation. Frank Sinatra played an integral role in helping make Jack Daniel's a household name, synonymous with whiskey, the world over. A name that is not renowned, not well-known, not associated with the drink, however, is Nathan “Nearest” Green and to properly understand the company, the business, the empire that developed, that is Jack Daniel's, it's imperative that you know his story and the impact he had on the brand. That's why we're here. So poor a yourself a drink – maybe stick with coffee – and sit back and relax for another edition of The Missing Chapter Podcast. We're kicking off Season 7 of One Nation Under Whisky with the one and only Victoria Eady Butler. Victoria is not only Whisky Magazine's 2021 & 2022's Master Blender of the year she's also the great-great grand daughter of Nathan "Nearest" Green, the father of the Lincoln County Process, a process integral to any Tennessee whisky wanting to call itself, in fact, 'Tennessee' whisky! This was a wonderful conversation with Victoria and one, we think, is worthy of a season opener. We trust you'll agree! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! He's a former slave who became Tennessee's premier whisky distiller and taught Jack Daniels how to make whiskey. Yes, you heard that right. He taught Jack Daniels how to make whiskey. In 2016, On the 150th anniversary of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey, Clay Risen wrote an article for the NY Times about Nathan “Nearest” Green. Fawn Weaver, an author and entrepreneur, was in Singapore when she read the article. This marked the beginning of something special. How special? Let's just say the spirits industry has been introduced to a legacy that is rewriting history. A history ensuring the story is being told straight from the source. Our guest is part of the team behind the most awarded American Whiskey or Bourbon since its launch in 2017. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Nearest Green and as a master blender for Uncle Nearest, she has reshaped the whiskey and bourbon industry. Please welcome, Victoria Eady Butler. In this fascinating conversation with Victoria Eady Butler, Master Blender for Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, some of the topics we discuss include: How Victoria transitioned from a career in criminal justice fighting organized crime to her role as the Master Blender for Uncle Nearest, where she won back-to-back titles as Master Blender of the Year in 2021 and 2022. What happened when she teamed up with historian and Uncle Nearest CEO Fawn Weaver to unearth the living legacy of her great-great grandfather, Nathan “Nearest” Green who was touted during his lifetime as the best distiller in the region. The importance of the Lincoln County Process, which is the primary differentiator between Tennessee whiskey and bourbon, and which was perfected by Nearest as a signature production technique. Then, of course, we taste Uncle Nearest's flagship product: 1884 Small Batch whiskey, which won Best American whiskey in 2021. We also investigate Victoria's signature approach to blending, which involves specific techniques to protect her palate and ensure that she addresses the all-important “finish” of the whiskey. Along the way, we learn about the deeply important philanthropic work of the Nearest Green Foundation, why Tennessee Whiskey is “Bourbon plus one,” where you can go to drink at the longest bar in the world, and much, much more. Welcome Whiskey Ringers to Episode 43! Today's guest is Victoria Eady Butler, Master Blender and 5th-generation descendant of the distillery's namesake, Nathan "Nearest" Green. Uncle Nearest Distillery is no stranger to the Whiskey Ring: earlier this year, Fawn Weaver joined the Podcast for a conversation about the Distillery's place in the whiskey world and a retrospective on the then-and-now of its history. Delving deep into Uncle Nearest as a man, the ways Fawn endeavored to bring his legacy to life, and how Clay Risen's original research inspired Fawn to pursue her own was an incredible episode. Victoria, however, comes in as a Whiskey Ring newbie. With Fawn we spoke about business and ideation - with Victoria, we go deep into the whiskey itself, through the sourcing to the new Master's Blend that is 100% Uncle Nearest-distilled spirit. Of course, Nearest Green's heritage had to be included, but this focused on what Victoria is doing as blender and distiller in her own right. If the Master's Blend is any indication, this is the next phase of Uncle Nearest - and it's ready to blast off. There are only 5 tickets left for the Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey Event! Back in 2016, Clay Risen wrote an article for the Times about a man named Nathan “Nearest” Green. Fawn Weaver, an author and entrepreneur, was halfway around the world in Singapore when she read the article. That moment would change both of their lives. This week's episode and the live event focused on the man and his legacy, the growth and future of his eponymous whiskey brand, and how Uncle Nearest is pushing the industry to face its own history, even if that history shakes them to the core. All families have stories. They get passed down so that each generation can better understand who they are and from where they came. For one Lynchburg family, their stories are the stories of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. As the world recognizes Nathan “Nearest” Green as Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey's first Master Distiller, his descendants are able to bring their family's stories to light. On this episode of Around the Barrel, host Lucas Hendrickson sits down with Debbie Staples, Jerome Vance, and Jackie Hardin, three of Nearest Green's descendants who currently work at the Distillery, to discuss their family's hidden history and the world's reaction to it, and the inspiring legacy of Nearest Green.
Maybe you've seen a bottle of Uncle Nearest in your store and you've wondered what it is all about. Or maybe you heard that he was the slave that taught Jack Daniel the art of distilling. When Fawn Weaver saw a photo of a black man sitting next to Jack in the middle of an early 20th Century distillery photo, the headline proclaiming a not too flattering headline gave her pause. And then, being a research fanatic like me, she flew to Lynchburg, TN and got the real story. Hear her amazing journey and the real story of Nathan "Nearest" Green.

Is Tennessee Whiskey Bourbon? That argument has divided whisky lovers for years, but Nicole Austin says it is. She's the head distiller and general manager at Diageo's Cascade Hollow Distillery, the home of George Dickel Tennessee Whiskey. To prove her point, she created the new Dickel Bourbon, and she'll make her case on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Uncle Nearest opens up the latest phase of its new distillery in Tennessee, complete with artifacts from the original distillery Nathan "Nearest" Green and Jack Daniel ran following the Civil War. There's a cease-fire on one front in the trade war between Europe and the United States, and that means the end of U.S. tariffs on single malts from Scotland and Northern Ireland. We'll also have details on an upcoming extra-old whisky from Scotland, and on Behind the Label, we'll look at the difference altitude makes when you're making whiskey.
Jenna’s drinking some Uncle Nearest Whiskey with Victoria Butler, Master Blender behind the award winning and fastest growing spirit ever. Nathan “Nearest” Green, who was enslaved until 1865, and the man that taught Jack Daniels how to make whiskey is the great-great-grandfather of Butler. Whiskey may run in her blood, but the journey to becoming a Master Blender is anything, but ordinary. Listen to hear how Butler didn’t realize her family history was unique, and what she would say to Nearest if she could.

You'll find plenty of both in the people and history that make Jack Daniel's.Our FoundingJasper Newton Daniel, more commonly known as Jack, introduces the world to Old No. 7, his signature charcoal-mellowed Tennessee Whiskey.1864Jack leaves home and is taken in by Reverend Dan Call. At the Call family farm, he learns the art of whiskey making from the preacher and an enslaved man named Nathan “Nearest” Green. Jack would later hire Nearest as the Jack Daniel Distillery's head distiller, what we call the Master Distiller today.1866The Jack Daniel Distillery is officially established, making it the very first registered distillery within the US, with Jack as the Master Distiller. The opening of his now-famous distillery would follow shortly thereafter, right next to Jack Daniel's prime resource: the mineral-rich Cave Spring Hollow.1904Old No. 7 takes a gold medal at the World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. It's the first of seven gold medals Old No. 7 is awarded.1906After arriving at work early and unable to open his safe, Jack kicks it out of frustration and breaks his toe. The injury worsens and will eventually take his life.1907With no wife or children as heirs, Jack leaves his land and distillery to his nephew, Lem Motlow.PROHIBITIONMaster Distiller Jess Motlow and his older brother Lem Motlow see the distillery through its greatest challenges—Prohibition and the Great Depression1911Jess takes everything he and Lem learned from Jack and becomes the whiskey's Master Distiller.1919The 18th Amendment is ratified and Prohibition becomes the law of the land. Jess can't legally sell his supply of whiskey, so he stores it in warehouses in Birmingham, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. For several years, a whole lot of good whiskey winds up doing a whole lot of nothing.1933Prohibition is repealed and happy days are here again. But it would be several more years before Jess resumed production of Jack Daniel's, as quality ingredients were in short supply post-repeal.WWIIIn the years following Prohibition, Master Distiller Lem Tolley helps the Jack Daniel Distillery weather the second of only two shutdowns in its history1941Lem commissions a life-size statue of Jack to be erected in front of the cave spring.1942A supply shortage makes Old No. 7 harder to come by, but savored all the more by those able to find it. Demand skyrockets.1944WWII builds to a peak. During this time the distillery ceases production so that resources can be redirected to help serve the war effort.1947In a New York City bar, Jackie Gleason introduces Frank Sinatra to Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. It's the start of a friendship that will endure the ages.1951Rock n' roll takes over the airwaves as production at the distillery inches closer to pre-Prohibition levels.COMING OF AGEMaster Distillers Jess Gamble ('64-‘66) and Frank Bobo ('66-‘88) watch the brand come of age, overseeing Old No. 7's transformation from a little known regional whiskey to an American icon as synonymous with rock and roll as the electric guitar.1964Jess helps make Jack Daniel's iconic, black and white ad campaign famous. Remarked a Nashville Magazine reporter, “Using a reverse sophistication, the ads draw the eye like an old photograph of Abraham Lincoln.”1966The British Invasion. Future greats of rock and roll cross the pond and conquer the States. Already taken with authentic American blues, they also take to authentic American whiskey.1977The punk movement is in full force. Now legendary clubs in New York City play host to the genre's biggest names. A constant partner in the revolution: Jack Daniel's.1981Hair metal takes hold on the Sunset Strip in California. While still a Tennessean at heart, Jack Daniel's becomes a fixture of the California scene.MODERN ERAAn exciting new era of innovation begins with Master Distiller Jimmy Bedford's ('88-'07) introduction of Gentleman Jack, and continues with the biggest expansion to our family of brands in 150 years under Master Distiller Jeff Arnett ('08-present).1988Jimmy introduces double-mellowed Gentleman Jack to the American market.1989A testament to Old No. 7's place in BBQ culture, Lynchburg plays host to the first annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbecue® competition.1997The very first bottles of Single Barrel Select are drawn from our finest barrels, hand-selected by Jimmy himself.2008Jeff Arnett joins a short and storied list of those entrusted with the responsibility of stewarding Mr. Jack's fine Tennessee sipping whiskey.2011Jack Daniel's introduces its first flavored expression, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, inspiring a whole new generation of Jack drinkers.2014To keep up with global demand, Jack opens a brand new cooperage in Lawrence County, Alabama. Hundreds of barrels are built by hand here every day.2015Our first new mash recipe since Old No. 7 is bottled: Single Barrel Rye. Once America's choice of whiskey over bourbon, rye's renaissance is underway—and thriving in Tennessee.2015We welcome Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire to the family with it's smooth yet fiery finish. There's an old saying that "sometimes, you choose the whisky business...and sometimes, it chooses you." That could be said for Victoria Eady-Butler, who retired last year after 31 years in federal law enforcement. As it turns out, the great-great granddaughter of Nathan "Nearest" Green inherited some of her ancestor's talent. She was the first member of the Green family to pick barrels for the Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch whiskey last year, and was so good at it that she's started a second career as the master blender for Uncle Nearest. She's also made a place for herself in the history books as the first African-American woman to serve as master blender for an American whiskey brand. In the news, another milestone in whisky collecting has fallen with the first million-dollar bid for a whisky in an online auction. We'll have the details, along with highlights from this week's World Whisky Forum in Seattle, the Distilled Spirits Council's conference in Louisville, and a bunch of ba-a-a-ad puns around Ardbeg's latest limited edition release. Yes, we're a bit sheepish about that!
The story of how the brand Uncle Nearest came into the world was truly a story of kismet for Sherrie Moore, who came out of retirement to take on the role of Chief Whiskey Officer (Director of Whiskey and Distillery Operations) for the brand. It is truly an amazing story and we are very happy to present it, along side three marks from the brand, on the podcast. The true story of Jack Daniels can't be told without also telling the story of Nearest Green. Uncle Nearest, as he was known, taught Jack Daniels how to make whiskey while he was enslaved on a plantation owned by Jack's Uncle. Many years later, Sherrie also learned how to make whiskey, this time from Nearest Green's great-grandson. That's where her journey begins.--What we drank:Uncle Nearest 1884Uncle Nearest 1820 Single BarrelUncle Nearest 1856--Follow us:spiritguidesocietypodcast.comfacebook.com/spiritguidesoctwitter.com/spiritguidesocinstagram.com/spiritguidesocyoutube.com/c/SpiritGuideSociety/?sub_confirmation=1--From Wikipedia:Uncle Nearest, Inc., launched the Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey brand in July 2017 and subsequently announced plans to expand into domestic and international markets. As of April 2019, it is sold in 47 states and eight countries. In late June 2018, Uncle Nearest LTD (based in London) announced it would not add recently created trade tariffs – which took effect July 1, 2018 – to its whiskey prices in Europe. The company's first 11-year-old, single-barrel whiskey premiered in October 2018 via the British Bourbon Society under the name Nathan Green 1870 Single Barrel.Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey is the first spirit named after an African-American.Nathan "Nearest" GreenKnown as Uncle Nearest, Nathan "Nearest" Green has been acknowledged since about 2016 as the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. He taught Jack Daniel to make Tennessee whiskey and served as the first master distiller – formerly called "head stiller" – for the Jack Daniel Distillery. He was reportedly instrumental in developing the Lincoln County Process, the charcoal filtering method used to make most Tennessee Whiskey.Nearest Green DistilleryThe company said its distillery would be at Sand Creek Farms, a Tennessee walking horse farm and event center in Shelbyville, Tennessee. In December 2017, the Bedford County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning proposal for Sand Creek Farms to accommodate a whiskey-themed, tourist-based business. According to the county planning and zoning director, Chris White, a hay barn on the property would be renovated for use as a barrel house, and a new building would be constructed for charcoal mellowing and bottling. The company plans to grow over 100 acres of corn and build natural spring water wells and walking paths. The distillery is also considering building its own malt house, but some existing buildings at the site are expected to be renovated for use in distillery and tourist operations, including a tasting room.A horse barn on the property is planned to become the site of the Nearest Green History Walk, a guided walking tour through an interactive gallery honoring the history of African-American contributions to the whiskey industry, with a focus on Nearest Green. Current plans also include a 600-seat arena onsite that will serve as a concert venue for country music artists. The company intends to maintain Sand Creek Farms as a working farm with horses and cattle in addition to operating the distillery.WhiskeysThe Uncle Nearest brand originally included a silver and an aged whiskey, both distilled from locally sourced grains and bottled in Tennessee. The silver whiskey takes 25 days to make using an 11-step process that includes a triple charcoal mellowing system designed for the brand. The company added a single-barrel whiskey in July 2018. Whiskey makers in Nashville – not the Jack Daniel Distillery – are producing the Uncle Nearest whiskeys for the company until renovations are complete for a distillery in Shelbyville. The recipe behind the Uncle Nearest Tennessee whiskeys dates back to the whiskeys made in the late 1800s in Lincoln County. According to Fawn Weaver, co-founder of the Nearest Green Foundation, "It was saved from a fire just behind the square in Lynchburg and is now under lock and key at the Farmers Bank in Lynchburg, the bank Jack Daniel founded in 1888." The recipe includes corn malt, a former whiskey ingredient long missing from Tennessee whiskeys.--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

If the story of Nathan "Nearest" Green and Jack Daniel was made into a movie, critics might describe it as "a feel-good story for the ages" or "a story from the past that's still relevant today." History shows "Nearest" Green was the enslaved distiller who not only perfected the "Lincoln County Process" for filtering Tennessee Whiskey, but also taught the young Jack Daniel how to make whiskey - then went to work with him after the Civil War ended and Green became a free man. Next month, Uncle Nearest Whiskey founder Fawn Weaver will open Phase 1 of the Uncle Nearest Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee to tell that story, and she'll tell us about it on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, the growing potential for a "no-deal" Brexit has Irish Whiskey makers on both sides of the border even more nervous than before. Investors were scared off this week by sluggish earnings for MGP Ingredients, and that raises a question about whether we've reached "Peak Bourbon." We'll also find out the back story behind the "Missouri Bourbon" law, and on Behind the Label, you'll hear how one young distiller started his career with a bang.
Nathan “Nearest" Green was the slave who taught Jack Daniel to distill Tennessee whiskey, and now his name is on a bottle. Dan and Emma are joined by author Fawn Weaver, whose pursuit of the truth brought to light one of the most amazing stories in spirits history.
On this episode of Chill Filtered, we're drinking what we would say is the most recognizable whiskey in the world, Jack Daniel's Old No. 7. The boys talk a bit about the history of Jack Daniel's, who is Nathan "Nearest" Green, sour mash, Tennessee whiskey, and what exactly is the Lincoln County Process? Plus: Adam and Cole hosted a whiskey tasting, and Adam has added 7 new bottles to his personal collection in one day. Jeff Arnett became the Master Distiller for Jack Daniel's in 2008, joining a small club of distillers that began with Jack Daniel and Nathan "Nearest" Green in 1866. In his first decade on the job, he's created more new Jack Daniel's whiskies than all of his predecessors combined, while also traveling the world as the brand's chief ambassador. We'll talk with Jeff Arnett about that decade and his plans for the future on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, community activists in Northern Ireland are trying to scuttle part of the expansion plan for Bushmills, while Wild Turkey's team is scrambling to meet unexpected demand for one of their newest whiskies.
Last November, Fawn Weaver told us about her mission to spread the story of Nathan "Nearest" Green, the former slave who became Jack Daniel's first distiller when he started making whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennessee after the end of the Civil War. Part of that mission is the Uncle Nearest 1856 Whiskey brand, which helps support the Nearest Green Foundation and provides college scholarships for Green's descendants. During our conversation in Episode 666, Weaver told us she'd just acquired a piece of property to build a distillery, but didn't want to say any more than that at the time. Just before Christmas, local officials in Bedford County, Tennessee approved the rezoning of a former horse farm to become the home of the Nearest Green Distillery, and Fawn Weaver joins us this week to update the story. We'll also have news on a distillery accident in Pittsburgh, along with a new way for Bourbon lovers to shop and fly in Louisville, and some of your New Year's drams, too.
In 2015, Brown-Forman acknowledged what had been an open secret around Lynchburg, Tennessee for generations - that Jack Daniel's distilling mentor was Nathan "Nearest" Green, a slave on the farm owned by Dan Coll until the end of the Civil War. After the war ended, Jack Daniel hired the newly-freed Nathan Green to be the head distiller at his new distillery in Lynchburg. Green's sons and grandsons worked for Jack Daniel later on, and even after 150 years, the distillery has always had at least one of Green's descendants working there. Fawn Weaver was fascinated by the 2015 New York Times story on the relationship between the Greens and Jack Daniel's, and is now devoting her life to researching that history and cementing Nearest Green's role in American history with, among many other things, a Tennessee whiskey that bears his name. We'll discuss the story of America's first African-American master distiller on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Scotch Whisky exports rose during the first half of 2017, but the statistics show some areas for concern. U.S. craft distilling is now a $3 billion annual business and growing, and a Swiss hotel has given a Chinese tourist a full refund after the $10,000 dram of whisky he bought there in August turned out to be a fake.
