Resources: Engage: The Podcast for Delta Pilots E43:Profit Sharing On this special edition episode of Engage, Captain Rich Wheeler, Chairman of the Negotiating Committee, and Captain Eric Criswell, former Chairman of the Negotiating Committee and current MEC Master Chairman, talk about profit sharing. From its origin and roots to this year's profit sharing payout, Rich, Eric, and Ryan Argenta discuss how profit sharing was negotiated by pilots in 1996; how it has changed over the years and the need to preserve this negotiated benefit that pilots and all employees now enjoy; how profit sharing is contractually calculated using PTIX and specific formulas; and how pilots can view their earnings and ensure their 2023 profit sharing payout is accurate. Happy Profit Sharing Day! (Recorded January 23, 2024). Disclaimer: ALPA does not give financial advice. We recommend that pilots first discuss with your financial advisor to determine what is best for themselves. HSA deferral options are not available to those pilots who participate in the DPMP health plan.
Today's SWAPA Number is three. That's the number of avenues that SWAPA has pursued between CBA cycles to address issues that inevitably arise in membership business with the Company. These agreements of the association are brought forward when there is a need for corrective action or clarification, and they are highly dependent on the condition of the events. Whether these are letters of agreement, memorandums of understanding, or side letters, the breadth and depth of these issues can dictate the options on the table. We've already seen some examples of these things happening since Contract 2020 was ratified. So today we're talking with Negotiating Committee chair Jody Reven, and NC member, Kurt Heidemann, about what these different agreements are, how their mechanisms work, and why these processes are an important part of how SWAPA does business. With the merger transaction between Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines now final, the separate pilot groups from each carrier will continue the process of combining into one. A significant part of that includes negotiating a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) under which the new combined pilot group will work. The Master Executive Councils (MECs) of each pilot group, as part of the Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA), have elected six pilots (three from each airline) to negotiate with Alaska Airlines on their behalf. This episode introduces the Negotiating Committee Chairs from each MEC—Alaska MEC Negotiating Chair David Wilhelm and Hawaiian MEC Negotiating Chair Doug Grant. The hosts, Alaska MEC Communications Chair David Campbell and Hawaiian MEC Communications Chair Mike Davis, discuss with Captains Wilhelm and Grant the process of negotiating a JCBA, the importance of working together as a new single unified pilot group, and what the pilots may expect in the next few months, including contract education and pilot input via survey and polling. In this episode, we take a closer look at the union's Interim Agreement, which allows SAG-AFTRA members employed on certain independent productions to proceed without violating the strike order. Our panel includes SAG-AFTRA President and chair of the TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee Fran Drescher, Vice Chairs of the Negotiating Committee Linda Powell and Tom Kemp, and Negotiating Committee Members David Jolliffe and Shaan Sharma. They help explain exactly what the Interim Agreement is — and what it isn't— why our Negotiating Committee approved it, and why we believe the agreement maintains our strength, solidarity and upper hand during our negotiations. **The views expressed by the guests are their own and not that of SAG-AFTRA. Last week we took a deep dive into the world of TV and Movies with three of the SAG-AFTRA Executive Committee and Negotiating Committee members. Today we turn to the Radio and Record industries, where I spent the better part of my career. The average person knows that radio has changed... they likely listen less than they used to and noticed that radio has gotten more generic over the years. They also know that the record industry has evolved. From buying vinyl records to CDs to downloads, and does anyone buy full albums any more? And how are artists getting paid (the answer is very little!).I started in radio in college in 1979 and lived through a major paradigm shift, hitting the fulcrum after passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (thanks for nothing Bill Clinton!).Today, I welcome Joel Denver to the show. He's the President/ Publisher/Founder and Owner of AllAccess.com, one of the last remaining trade publications serving the radio and record industry. Unfortunately, All Access will cease operations on August 15, marking the end of an era.Joel will explain what prompted the end and join me in a look back at all that has changed.** And we were joined midway by Tommy Nast, former GM of the now-defunct Album Network, another trade magazine that I actually worked for!

Five by Five | The Podcast for The ALPA Pilots of Frontier Airlines, We Hear You Loud and Clear
On this episode of Five by Five host Jason DuVernay and Gary Michalk from the Negotiating Committee introduce a conversation between Delta Air Lines First Officer Ryan Argenta and Attorney Marcus Migliore. Marcus has nearly 30 years of experience with ALPA and currently serves as General Counsel & Director, Legal Department. Ryan and Marcus discuss the implications of the Railway Labor Act (RLA) on Section 6 negotiations and how pilot-coordinated self-help actions can adversely derail progress at the table. Digging into a number of cases where pilot actions, such as refusing to pick up open time trips, premium trips, and coordinating sick outs we learn about court actions and stiff sanctions for individual pilots and the union. We learn what self-help actions pilots can take under the RLA and how pilot unity, wearing lanyards, and informational picketing make a huge impact at the negotiating table. As things heat up in negotiations and this summer, Mr. Migliore explains how important it is for ALPA pilots to keep cool, follow the rules and laws imposed by the RLA, and let ALPA and elected representatives follow the defined flow process. While not sexy, this often-overlooked section adds significant value to pilots who want better quality of life and improved pay treatment for not so friendly scheduling issues such as airport sits, late night arrivals, redeyes, extended duty periods, and the like. Join Engage host First Officer Ryan Argenta, Rich Wheeler of the Negotiating Committee and Shawn Kellett, Scheduling Committee Chairman as they dive into the details of rotation construction improvements, greater optimizer limitations and restrictions, and important day-to-day limitations on rotations and reroutes that will improve pilot quality of life overall. On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta speaks with Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), about AFA's campaign to help Delta flight attendants organize, how a flight attendant union at Delta would affect Delta pilots, and how Delta pilots can best support their flight attendant colleagues. At the DAL MEC Regular Meeting in June, Sara Nelson updated the MEC as to the AFA's organizing effort at Delta, which is gaining significant momentum. The MEC subsequently unanimously approved a resolution supporting the AFA's organizing drive for Delta flight attendants. On this episode, Sara discusses how subjects of bargaining for pilots, such as Profit Sharing, are often given to flight attendants to keep their unionization efforts at bay. She also explains how a flight attendants' union would alleviate pilots from having to negotiate pay and benefits on behalf other employee groups. The Company has frequently told the Negotiating Committee that Delta must provide the same negotiated benefits, such as Profit Sharing, sought by pilots to flight attendants. A collective bargaining agent for flight attendants would stop this management tactic in its tracks. In addition, Sara explains that with AFA on Delta property, the flight attendants can bargain for themselves, and management can stop attempting to charge pilots for the costs of providing hard-bargained contractual gains to other employee groups. Sara asks for the Delta pilots' support by talking to flight attendants about having a union and answering their questions, supporting flight attendants by wearing AFA pins, and helping flight attendants fill out AFA authorization cards. The Delta MEC supports the AFA and our Delta flight attendants. Pilots wishing to show their support by wearing AFA pins or helping with authorization cards should contact their LEC representatives. Please note AFA authorization cards must not be distributed or filled out on Company time or on the airplane; however, doing so during layovers, on crew transportation, at airports, or while on personal time is appropriate. Today's SWAPA number is 845. That's the number of days Southwest has had SWAPA's Contract 2020 proposal. On today's show I have a guest host, Lexi Taylor. Lexi is on our legal staff and is in the room for every negotiation. Today we are interviewing Jody Reven as well as turning the tables on regular podcast host Kurt Heidemann and making him answer questions as part of the Negotiating Committee. We'll be talking about the pace of negotiations as well as what comes next.
In this episode Podcast Host, Strategic Communications Chairman David Campbell discusses the Railway Labor Act (RLA), including what it means to be in mediated negotiations and the process of being released before engaging in a legal strike. ALPA's Senior Advisor and Chief Negotiator Bruce York, along with Senior Labor Relations Counsel Zach Henige join this episode to discuss what to expect during RLA mediation and what tactics are available to us to advance the pilots' goals. Bruce York has been negotiating airline contracts for more than 40 years and shares his experience regarding ways management teams have in the past attempted to stymie the work of ALPA. Also on this episode are MEC Chairman Will McQuillen and Negotiating Chairman Chris Gruner. This week the pilots' Negotiating Committee, including Chris Gruner, began negotiations in the presence of a mediator, Mike Tosi, assigned by the National Mediation Board. Pilots may recall, the company stated it was filing for mediation with the intention of moving negotiations to a conclusion. Alaska pilots may read the committee's update detailing the results of these three days of mediated negotiations. The Alaska Airlines pilots have been negotiating with their company for nearly three years in attempts to bring the contract more in line with their industry peers. On January 19, 2022 the parties met to conduct the first mediated session with the assistance of a national mediator assigned by the National Mediation Board (NMB). RLA Flow Chart
Ariel Gold, Co-Executive Director at Code Pink, talks to us about the weekend protests and Israeli retaliation at the Gaza separation wall that left scores injured. We talk about how the decades-long blockade of the Gaza Strip has rendered the area “unlivable” and wholly dependent on foreign aid, and the continuing repression of Israeli forces. We also talk about whether this new wave of protests will have any effect on the current situation, and whether Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will take a different approach from his predecessor, Benjamin Netanyahu.Chris Garaffa, web developer, technologist, security and privacy consultant, talks to us about China's new privacy laws which have been hailed as one of the world's most robust and include rules similar to European laws, how it stipulates that companies cannot use personal data to target individuals for marketing. We also talk about how these laws compare to laws in the books in the U.S., where data collection for marketing is rampant, the differences between private company and state collection of data, and how U.S. tech companies are consistently hostile to data privacy regulations. Carlos Delgado, member of the Negotiating Committee for the Miami Caravan To Demand The End of The Blockade, talks to us about the movement to end the blockade of the U.S. on Cuba, the challenges of organizing for normalizing relations between the two nations, where there is a political cost in the U.S. to bucking the trend of being overly aggressive against Cuba, and how the Cuban emigré community has changed through generations. We also talk about the Biden administration policies vis-a-vis Cuba, and whether we will see any changes in the future. Margaret Kimberley, editor and senior columnist at Black Agenda Report and author of the book "Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents," talks to us about the legacy of progressive journalist Glen Ford, the media coverage of our ongoing withdrawal from Afghanistan, the FDA approval for the Pfizer vaccine, and the FBI finding little evidence the riot at the capitol on January 6 was coordinated.
Pilots Hold Fast to their Bargaining Expectations In this episode, MEC Chairman Will McQuillen and Negotiating Committee Chairman Chris Gruner discuss with host Communications Chairman David Campbell the commitment ALPA leadership has in maintaining and pressing for the contract improvement priorities identified by Alaska pilots. Those goals are clear, consistent, long overdue, and are driving the efforts of the Negotiating Committee. San Francisco Crew Base Given that Alaska Airlines has been vague on whether they would maintain a pilot domicile in San Francisco, ALPA conducted its own research on the viability of keeping a crew base in that city. Also in the episode, Chairman McQuillen reveals what ALPA discovered.

Today's SWAPA number is 346. That's the number of pilots who are currently out on long term disability. Here to talk to us today about loss of license, our current disability plans, and what we hope to achieve in terms of benefits in Contract 2020 is SWAPA's Aeromedical Committee Chair Brent Weisner and Negotiating Committee member Damian Jennette.
Pilots at Alaska Airlines began negotiating improvements to their collective bargaining agreement with management in June 2019. Now the pilots' Negotiating Committee is shifting its focus to the significant aspects of the contract known as the four cornerstones—work rules, job security, benefits, and pay. In this episode, MEC Chairman Will McQuillen, Negotiating Committee Chairman Chris Gruner, and ALPA's chief negotiator Bruce York discuss negotiating the more significant aspects of the pilots' contract.
Strategic Communications Chairman, David Campbell sits down with Negotiating Chairman, Chris Gurner and MEC Chairman, Will McQuillen to discuss pending contract negotiations and the importance of Safeguarding Our Future through the collective bargaining process. Part of that conversation dealt with Section 6 of the Railway Labor Act and the fact that it contains no requirement of arbitration.
