Experts often build models to help predict how systems will behave. But what happens if, instead of asking the experts to build models, we ask laypeople to simply predict outcomes? This is what happens in 'prediction markets'. And it turns out that in some situations, the 'wisdom of the crowd' often outperforms experts' models. To break down what prediction markets are and how they work, we're joined by Rajiv Sethi, Professor of Economics at Barnard College at Columbia University and External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. If you have a phone or computer, you could start a media company right now and publish and share whatever you like. On one hand, this is amazing and democratizes what was previously reserved for a handful of gatekeepers. At the same time, the deluge of messages, often with ulterior motives, makes it extremely difficult for most of us to think freely. Should you trust governmental organizations? Left or right leaning news media? And what about the bro science podcaster? I don't have the answers to any of these questions, but our guest on this week's podcast does. English Description (German below)Guest: Ralph HertwigRalph Hertwig explains the phenomenon of the "wisdom of the crowd". In the wisdom traditions, the individual is considered wise, the group rather a source of irrationality. Under certain circumstances, however, it may be that the combined judgment of a crowd surpasses that of any one person, no matter how wise. But this should not lead us to blindly apply the concept of the "wisdom of the crowd" to every group movement and to trust that the average of many assessments is always the best choice. After all, groups of people are not always idealized collections of subjects. In many situations they interact very strongly with each other, influence each other and are prone to panic overreactions by immitation behavior, which increase each other than to cool down wisely and soberly. You can find the German and the English transcript on our homepage: www.metis.ethz.ch. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Wisdom of the Crowd vs. "the Best of the Best of the Best", published by nikos on April 4, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary This post asks whether we can improve forecasts for binary questions merely by selecting a few accomplished forecasters from a larger pool. Using Metaculus data, it compares the Community Prediction (a recency-weighted median of all forecasts) with a counterfactual Community Prediction that combines forecasts from only the best 5, 10, ..., 30 forecasters based on past performance (the "Best") and a counterfactual Community Prediction with all other forecasters (the "Rest") and the Metaculus Prediction, Metaculus' proprietary aggregation algorithm that weighs forecasters based on past performance and extremises forecasts (i.e. pushes them towards either 0 or 1) The ensemble of the "Best" almost always performs worse on average than the Community Prediction with all forecasters The "Best" outperforms the ensemble of all other forecaster (the "Rest") in some instances. the "Best" never outperform the "Rest" on average for questions with more than 200 forecasters performance of the "Best" improves as their size increases. They never outperform the "Rest" on average at size 5, sometimes outperform it at size 10-20 and reliably outperform it for size 20+ (but only for questions with fewer than 200 forecasters) The Metaculus Prediction on average outperforms all other approaches in most instances, but may have less of an advantage against the Community Prediction for questions with more forecasters The code is published here. Conflict of interest noteI am an employee of Metaculus. I think this didn't influence my analysis, but then of course I'd think that, and there may be things I haven't thought about. Introduction Let's say you had access to a large number of forecasters and you were interested in getting the best possible forecast for something. Maybe you're running a prediction platform (good job!). Or you're the head of an important organisation that needs to make an important decision. Or you just really really really want to correctly guess the weight of an ox. What are you going to do? Most likely, you would ask everyone for their forecast, throw the individual predictions together, stir a bit, and pull out some combined forecast. The easiest way to do this is to just take the mean or median of all individual forecasts, or, probably better for binary forecasts, the geometric mean of odds. If you stir a bit harder, you could get a weighted, rather than an unweighted combination of forecasts. That is, when combining predictions you give forecasters different weights based on their past performance. This seems like an obvious idea, but in reality it is really hard to pull off. This is called the forecast combination puzzle: estimating weights from past data is often noisy or biased and therefore a simple unweighted ensemble often performs best. Instead of estimating precise weights, you could just decide to take the X best forecasters based on past performance and use only their forecasts to form a smaller ensemble. (Effectively, this would just give those forecasters a weight of 1 and everyone else a weight of 0). Presumably, when choosing your X, there is a trade-off between "having better forecasters" and "having more forecasters" (see this and this analysis on why more forecasters might be good). (Note that what I'm analysing here is not actually a selection of the best available forecasters. The selection process is quite distinct from the one used for say Superforecasters, or Metaculus Pro Forecasters, who are identified using a variety of criteria. And see the Discussion section for additional factors not studied here that would likely affect the performance of such a forecasting group.) Methods To get some insights, I analys...

“If we chase perfection… we'll lose.” Amongst the 455 (and some) eco labels and sparkling greenwash, how's a person to figure out which products and brands they can truly have confidence in when wanting to make more sustainable and ethical choices in their shopping trolleys? What can we trust? What can we understand? When rushing round the supermarket aisles are we realistically going to scan QR codes and visit websites for the latest carbon calculations? Unlikely… In this podcast we find out more about the innovative tech start-up ‘Wherefrom' - where Adam Williams, Founder, tells us about their mission to ensure every product and company in the world has a ‘Wherefrom Score'. They're the world's first crowd-sourced sustainability review platform, comparing any company or product on a single scale. Likened to Trip Advisor, the platform enables people to score and review products and connect directly with brands – it also enables brands to claim their profile and provides opportunity for them to share sustainability credentials and respond and engage with reviewers directly and transparently. As a by-product, the platform provides useful data and insights for brands around consumer opinion which can help to inform the development of sustainability strategies. Adam shares the back story of how Wherefrom came to be and how what started as a passion project has quickly transitioned into a scalable and useful resource that is adding value at the point of purchase for people. We talk about the practicalities of how the Wherefrom score works, the rigour and the responsibility. What's important for Wherefrom is ‘cross-over' appeal – because to effect scale and wider impact, we need to extend far beyond the sustainability minded echo-chambers to help reach the majority of shoppers – to educate, get them rethinking and making better more informed choices. As we discussed with Helen Hepworth in a previous pod, the supermarkets, as gatekeepers, also have a significant role to play in influencing better choices – and we discuss again, the need for the need for them to be more selective and responsible about what they stock. We also cover the important role of finance and investment – and how investors need to move away from outmoded ways of assessing where to invest – and to invest more widely in the small, innovative, impact driven start-ups – to enable a sea-change in the number of social impact businesses moving from start-up to scale-up – and making a real difference to what business looks like and what it gives back to society. Visit Wherefrom.org – and you'll be hit at every level with their ethos of, as Adam puts it… ‘doing sustainability with a big fat smile'. We found Wherefrom the day they ‘broke the internet' with people sharing their hilarious (and brain worm inducing), ‘Stop the Wash' music video – singing out the plethora of greenwash taglines, advising brands that given those lines were now part of their ‘song', if used they would sue for copyright! ;) [if you missed it – it's here]. And whilst there's a lot of humour, fun, and mockery to be had to keep things light, interesting and of course, to aide mass appeal – the fun doesn't detract from the serious mission they're on, bringing the customer back into sustainability strategy and progress the behaviour change they're pursuing and the heartfelt reminder to us all of the role we play and the choices we make. Tune in… and listen to Adam's answer to our final ‘quick round' question – and you'll know what we're talking about. With the boom of data-driven organizations and the adoption of technological advancements, cybersecurity threats are also getting more sophisticated. The fast-changing nature of cybersecurity and the sheer amount of threats and vulnerabilities requires organizations to stay on top of protecting their assets and data from attackers. To counteract this, organizations are increasingly turning to ethical-hackers and bug bounty programs. Having ethical-hackers and security researchers detect vulnerabilities before cyber attackers do, allows organizations to get ahead by acting proactively. Crowdsourced bug bounty hunting platforms provide organizations access to a large and skilled community of ethical-hackers and researchers to test their websites and applications. Researchers also benefit from joining a vibrant community and participating in programs fit for their skills. Bug bounty platforms handle the project and rewards management so hunters can focus on what they do best, hunting. To kick-off Securitytrails Bug Bounty Hunting Month, we are talking with Stijn Jans, the Founder and CEO of Intigriti and Inti De Ceukelaire, their Head of Hackers. Intigriti is the largest ethical hacking and bug bounty hunting platform in Europe and one of the most well-known and loved in the world and the community. In this first interview of BBHM, learn more about Intigriti's philosophy, how does wisdom of the crowd help businesses and the crowd itself, their biggest wins, and finally find out who is behind their highly entertaining Twitter account. Securitytrails: What did the early days of Intigriti look like? Stijn Jans: Intigriti launched in 2016, a time when bug bounty and crowdsourced security concepts were still fairly unknown in Europe. For that reason, many of the first programs published on the Intigriti platform were won through evangelizing marketing efforts. We were looking for pioneers in the cybersecurity community to focus on building a healthy and engaged crowd of ethical-hackers. Our target customers were European, so running the company in a European way was critical. However, we knew companies could be targeted by malicious hackers from anywhere in the world. Therefore, our hacking community had to be global as well. I hired a small team of motivated people who shared my passion for modifying security testing, and they set to work building our community. Meanwhile, I began reaching out to my contacts in cybersecurity, educating them on the benefits of continuous crowd security. ethical-hackers working with us. Securitytrails: Intigriti is based in Europe. What differences do you see between the cybersecurity industry, and field in general, in Europe vs the US? Is the awareness different among Organizations? Stijn Jans & Inti De Ceukelaire: The US was the first to embrace crowd security. However, the adoption rate in Europe is steadily increasing. Partly due to legal frameworks, like GDPR, that have come into play, which required businesses to take a step up with their security efforts. GDPR is one example, but there are many more governmental bodies that European companies have to comply with. It's essential for security teams to have the relevant services and infrastructures in place, and at Intigriti, we take a strong focus on this. Securitytrails: How did you discover the need for a bug bounty platform like Intigriti? Where did the idea for a crowdsourced platform come from? Stijn: Before Intigriti, I ran a security company that focused on penetration testing. Pen-testing is a time-limited spot check, focused on one moment in time and only one application is tested. For years, the company successfully deployed consultants to one-week assignments testing applications defined by the customer. Although business was going well, there was one challenge with this type of security testing that customers kept asking me, Can you guarantee that you have found all possible vulnerabilities after the test? And the only possible answ...

An episode to carry on from 'You are the average of the 5 people you surround.' (Episode 10) The statistical model of of 'wisdom of the crowd' is very accurate in predicting things that individuals on their own are poor at forecasting. We were joined by "Let's Talk FPL" Andy to discuss two topics: Wisdom of the crowd: Are the top players bought by the FPL community the best ones? and also Are there better picks far from the madding crowd? Has the FPL community missed out any potential assets in their teams at this moment. There was a lot to take from the discussions as we broke away from the twittersphere to see if there were any potential players that had been missed. We have lots more podcasts and discussions coming up until the start of the season so make sure to follow our twitter to be updated whenever we release anything.
Sam Bell talks about the wisdom of a crowd.
Bill Joy once said "There are always more smart people outside your company than within it"... So should we be looking at ways to utilise the wisdom of the crowd? Are the many cleverer than the few?

Sometimes we choose the path of least resistance because it is the easiest path to take. Sometimes however, that means listening to the wisdom of the crowd as they chant, “Jump off the cliff”. You can imagine how this story would turn out – maybe you even know from your own experience. Is there hope for those times when we can choose to stand alone? Is there victory?
You're invited to join our science-themed cocktail party, where experts on the history of science tell us stories, fun facts, and random anecdotes about the development of scientific knowledge from the 19th century to today. In this episode, we talk to Professor Marcus du Sautoy about the wisdom of the crowd. Does crowdsourcing help us make better decisions? Or does it expose us to the perils of groupthink? Are there some questions - scientific, mathematical, or social - that are best answered with many people participating? What is the value of expertise? Hear Marcus discuss these topics and more in this episode of The Conversationalist. And watch his full talk on 'The Wisdom of the Crowd' at the Royal Society here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7tngG2kAik Interviews with: Prof Marcus du Sautoy (University of Oxford) Produced by: Dr Kira Allmann (University of Oxford) Music by: Rosemary Allmann This podcast is brought to you by the Constructing Scientific Communities Project, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Demystify Innovation - everything you need to know for successful innovation
In this episode of Demystify Innovation we talk to Daniel Daboczy of Funded by Me - Sweden's first crowdfunding platform - about their journey to discover the wisdom of the crowd. The question is, how wise is the crowd? We wonder what makes something worth supporting? Who deserves to be funded and who doesn’t? How do you encourage funding for the less shiny and cute ideas? Crowdfunding is considered a method for people to take control of their financial future. Or is it a retelling of an old story where the hero is the marketplace and society always plays a supporting role?
Welcome to the Dark Future™ where mob justice is the law of the land and "Wisdom Of The Crowd" isn't used sarcastically. There is now a popular Tumblr called "This Is The Guy Who Raped Me" where anyone can anonymously submit, without proof, photos of men who (((ALLEGEDLY*))) raped them. In order to fight the insanity, Jesse has had the Cult submit multiple photos of himself to clog up their system, but is it too late for sanity? Plus: listeners submitted their own police sketch drawings of Black Hitler, the man who accosted Jesse in the streets. 209 - Rede Dich Reich - Wisdom of the crowd Rückblick auf das Podcast-Intensiv-Seminar von TomsTalkTime.com. Was würdest Du tun, wenn Geld keine Rolle spielen würde?
