Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Fernanda Fonseca Rosenblatt, D.Phil., to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Join us as Dr. Rosenblatt discusses the critical shortcomings of the conventional criminal justice system in addressing gendered violence and explores how restorative justice offers a survivor-centered alternative. Survivors often face secondary victimization, navigating a system that can be dismissive, retraumatizing, or focused solely on punitive measures. Dr. Rosenblatt highlights research from around the world demonstrating how restorative practices—when done properly—can empower survivors, offer meaningful accountability, and provide justice that prioritizes safety and agency. She also dispels common myths about restorative justice, including misconceptions about mandatory face-to-face encounters. Dr. Fernanda Fonseca Rosenblatt is an Associate Professor at the IIRP. She also serves as the book review editor for the International Journal of Restorative Justice. She is also a member of the Research Committee of the European Forum for Restorative Justice. Dr. Rosenblatt has contributed to United Nations initiatives on multiple occasions, including serving as an expert reviewer for the latest edition of the United Nations Handbook on Restorative Programmes and as a Portuguese-speaking expert for the translation of the Restorative Justice Module of the Education for Justice project by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). My name is Kerry Paul, and I am seeking election to the board for a second term.  Thank you, Darroll Grant, for your nomination. I, along with my wife Dawn, and our son, Kevin,  own and operate Missouri Dorpers in Albany, MO.  We have Dorpers and White Dorpers as well as Registered Red Angus cows.  We have owned Dorper Sheep for 14 years. Albany is where I grew up and we moved back after Kevin was born, about 29 years ago.  After graduating from the University of Missouri, I worked in the Farm Equipment, Pharmaceutical, and Seed industries.Besides serving on the ADSBS Board the last three years, I have served on boards for our local Church, School, University Extension, and Angus Associations.  Our flock contains about 240 head of fullblood ewes and we usually have 40 or more rams for sale at any time.  We lamb three seasons a year, getting three lamb crops per ewe every two years. Spending three years on the board, I have found it both fulfilling and challenging.  I am the Co-Chair of the Data and Research Committee.   Being reelected would allow me to see some projects through that we are working on. The Sire Project with Texas A&M is an opportunity for some valuable data that we can use in a production database.  NSIP has been cumbersome to utilize for Dorper breeders as it doesn't allow for more than one lamb crop a year, among other things, but it is pretty much all there is out there. Our next system for Breed Registration needs to be easy for breeders to input performance information into. This committee is also trying to acquire data that has already been collected that pushes forth the advantage of Dorper Sheep.  Many of the top sale barns in the country report sheep sales that are split out as Dorper/Dorper Cross, vs non-Dorper.  That data shows a clear advantage for Dorper Sheep and we need to get that kind of information compiled, published, and used in our marketing.  There are a couple of things that drive my thought process when faced with questions or decisions on the board.  First, is the subject good for the breed as a whole.  Second, will it help the breed maintain the breed standard.  I feel strongly about those two things and they guide my voting.  I would appreciate your vote for me on the board.Respectfully,Kerry Paul

Nonprofit leaders, if you're ready to catapult your revenue, then this episode is for you! I sat down with special guest, Barabara O'Reilly, expert fundraiser and CEO of Windmill Hill Consulting, to chat about what organizations can do to boost their fundraising revenue. We dove into what's holding nonprofits back and how they can grow to become financially strong organizations. We also discussed the importance of setting realistic goals and expectations when hiring a fundraiser. Plus, why relationship building and consistency are important factors in fundraising.    About Barbara Barbara is a seasoned fundraising consultant on a mission to help more nonprofits raise more money by creating strong donor experiences. Whether it was leading record-setting reunion classes, securing tens of millions of dollars from global corporations following some of the most devastating natural disasters around the world, or overseeing a team that grew donor engagement of major individual donors, Barbara knows that fundraising is much more than just asking for money. Her firm, Windmill Hill Consulting, works with organizations giving them the resources, skills, and mindset they need to build stronger donor relationships and catapult their revenue. Barbara serves as past president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Washington DC Metro Chapter. She sits on the board of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and AFP Foundation and chairs the Research Committee for the Giving USA Foundation. In 2020, she joined the faculty at the University of Maryland's Do Good Institute teaching nonprofit fundraising.   Read the podcast transcript here.   Episode Summary In this episode, you'll learn a variety of fundraising strategies, including: What is a fundraising consultant? (4:35) Building strong relationships (12:00) Strategically planning fundraising initiatives (14:00) Realistic expectations when hiring fundraisers (17:15) How to bridge the fundraising gap in small nonprofits (23:30) Staying organized throughout the fundraising process (30:20) Trends in fundraising and philanthropy (35:15)   Teasers “Fundraising is about more than just asking for money.” “The real magic happens with conversations and with really understanding who those donors are and what drives them. But the challenge is that it takes time. And nonprofits, most of them, do not have the luxury of time.” “Saying that there are no donors out there is preposterous. There are. We've got to reframe our language to talk about that future state. 2023 marks 30 years since the very first MS disease-modifying therapy received FDA approval. To say that changed everything would be an understatement. Two of the top MS experts in the world have published a reflection, looking back at how MS research and treatment has progressed over the past 30 years and looking ahead at the challenges that remain in solving the riddle of MS. Joining me this week are the authors of that reflection, Dr. Fred Lublin and Dr. Stephen Krieger. Dr. Lublin participated in the development of the very first disease-modifying therapy approved for treating MS and, since that time, he has been involved in the development of nearly all of the DMTs available today.  Dr. Krieger has developed a game-changing theory that MS is a single disease that evolves along a continuum, rather than the four separate categories that neurologists have used to describe MS for the past couple of decades. We'll also introduce you to The Community Review of MS Research Committee. We'll share what very well may be the single most important development to come out of the Pathways To Cures Global Summit. We'll tell you about the outcome of a study that may point to a potential MS treatment for women that has also been shown to trigger myelin repair. We'll explain the method for accurately measuring remyelination that was just recently confirmed by a UCSF research team. And we'll tell you where you can catch the video replay of the webcast that was live-streamed from last month's International Progressive MS Alliance Scientific Congress. We have a lot to talk about! In the podcast interview, Joe and Scooter discussed horseshoes and LTL, which refers to an article that Scooter wrote about the changes to the LTL industry. Check out Scooter's LinkedIn Post here: Horseshoes and LTL Scooter's “horseshoe” reference is regarding LTL pricing, which is notoriously complex and difficult to understand. Scooter believes that LTL pricing is going to become easier – more like the game horseshoes, where “close enough” is good enough. Shippers, carriers, and 3PLs have all struggled with the current pricing, which is based on product classifications which are often interpreted incorrectly. The new pricing system will be based on density, in other words if you give the carrier the proper weights and dimensions, you will get a quote that matches the invoice. The pricing change is being driven by LTL industry leaders Old Dominion, FedEx along with The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA). The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) is a nonprofit membership organization headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Its membership is comprised of motor carriers operating in interstate, intrastate and foreign commerce. NMFTA publishes the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®), a standard that provides a comparison of commodities moving in commerce.
