My guest this week is Academy Award nominee actor, Gary Busey. Filmed live in my home, Gary was generous to share Highlights from his career, personal life and his wonderful "Buseyisms". Please enjoy the vignettes and stories with Gary Busey.In 1966, Gary Busey left Tulsa Oklahoma, to make it big as a singing drummer in Hollywood. The band acquired moderate success playing gigs along the Sunset Strip opening for Sly and the Family Stone and various other bands. His band, Carp, was signed to Epic Records and was given a moderate signing bonus to cut their album. When the band broke up, Gary didn't give up and went on to audition for television and film roles after studying with James Best in Studio City. Gary's tenacity landed him roles as guest stars in such television shows as Gunsmoke and Baretta. Gary's standout performance in A Star Is Born got the attention of Dustin Hoffman who hired him along with his son Jake for the film Straight Time. On the heels of hype, Gary landed the second lead in Big Wednesday, now a cult classic surf film and immediately after, he landed the lead role in The Buddy Holly Story, which garnered him critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for best actor in 1978. She started her career at the early age of four, playing Jack Nicholson's granddaughter in Rob Reiner's “The Bucket List.” She then went on to appear in several television films and series, works include Lifetime's “Liz and Dick” alongside Lindsay Lohan, “Amish Grace” with Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Amazon's “The Kicks” and “Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street,” and Showtime's “Shameless.” This past year, she played the antagonist in Lifetime's “Black Girl Missing” with Garcelle Beauvais. Most recently, she championed her first leading role in another Lifetime movie, “Ladies of the ‘80s: A Divas Christmas,” alongside Linda Gray, Loni Anderson, Morgan Fairchild, Donna Mills, and Nicollette Sheridan. Karl Gnass is a master draftsman with an expert understanding of the human and animal forms. His grasp of movement, anatomy, and energy has made him an in demand advisor to an animation industry eager to infuse more authenticity into its character and creature designs. Gnass (pronounced guh-nahss) has developed facial anatomy and character expressions and consulted on anatomical authenticity for such films as I Am Legend, Watchmen, The Polar Express, Hollow Man, as well as Disney's Tangled and Moana. Of particular note, he developed the character expressions and anatomical breakdowns for Stuart and other animals in Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2, and creature breakdowns in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Gnass has been at the forefront of helping animators translate drawing skills to new technology. Legendary Disney animator and Tangled co-director Glen Keane engaged Gnass to develop a Dynamic Figure for Maya class to help computer animators incorporate authentic movement with the then-emerging 3D rendering technology. In other industry arenas, Gnass has storyboarded for Disney Television Animation, and several of his figure drawings and paintings are in private celebrity collections. He is an actor, director, stand-up, and Groundlings alum but mostly he has written and produced many of the most popular TV comedies over the last 30 years. He helped develop and wrote on the first five seasons of The Simpsons. He wrote and produced Frasier, Malcolm In The Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond, The George Lopez Show, School of Rock, and Henry Danger to name a few. He has written, rewritten, punched up many films including Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor all the Austin Powers comedies, most of the Shrek films, Madagascar, Zombieland 2, and the academy award nominated Kubo And The Two Strings. Jay has won many awards including a WGA Award, The Humanitas Award, a People's Choice Award, and a Golden Rose of Montrose (whatever that is). Jay has been nominated for 14 Emmy awards and won 4 of them. He's had numerous pilots written and made. He created a show based loosely on his life, Wendell and Vinnie, and he cowrote and produced the cult comedy, The Wrong Guy, which won the HBO Comedy Festival Award.
