In this episode, Ceri speaks to writer, critic, artist coach Paddy Johnson, founder of Netvvrk, a membership that enables artists to broaden their professional opportunities. Paddy shares her journey from rural Canada to the heart of the New York art world, offering invaluable insights on navigating the creative industry, building communities, and defining success on one's own terms. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration and practical advice for their creative journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS Building genuine friendships and a supportive creative community is crucial for navigating the challenges of the art world and finding your way through periods of feeling creatively lost. Tough feedback and provocations from mentors can help artists identify what they don't want and make choices that are right for them. Quitting projects or styles can be necessary for growth, even when your own identity is entangled with them. Understanding your audience and where you fit within the art industry is key to effective communication and decision-making. Clear communication and asking for what you need, are essential professional skills that demonstrate professionalism rather than weakness. Success is ultimately about having agency over your own time and the ability to choose when to experience stress and when to rest. Writing helps artists think and learn, even though the process can be challenging. Having a viable business structure allows for the sustainability and continuity of creative efforts. BEST MOMENTS  "I always consider the blog commenters to be the editors of the blog because when I started, I didn't have an editor." "Writing helps us think. It helps us learn, and that's why writing sucks so badly. It's really, really hard to do." "Quitting allows you to do the things that you're meant to do when you're meant to do them." "The fact that you don't know something and are asking about it gives you more information and shows you to be a professional. It does not reveal you to be not professional." "A successful life is really being able to choose when you experience that stress." "It's possible to not find your way. I've seen that happen." "Artists are not fundamentally bad at writing. They just need support." "If I was writing about something that already existed, it was not that hard to have an idea about it." This week on Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has the pleasure of sitting down with Paddy Johnson who is the founder of VVrkshop, a company that strives to uplift struggling artists and help them get grants, residencies and shows. Paddy is also the co-founder of the collaborative national publishing project Impractical Space, and apart from being a two-time nominee Best Critic at the Rob Pruitt Awards, she is has also won the Village Voice Web Award for best Art Blog. In this episode, Paddy talks about a lot of things, but most importantly, it is the one problem that many artists face that Paddy touches upon; the imposter syndrome. From having the self-doubts to being able to accept them and move past them, somewhere Paddy learned how to be a creative without her inner critic sabotaging her success. As an entrepreneur, she has also found interest in places she never thought she would, and it's because all of it is tied to her business, something that she is truly interested in. As we move forward, Paddy gives some valuable advice on how to set your goals as an artist. Talking about its three stages, which include networking and outreaching, Paddy instructs artists on how they should navigate their journey in the art industry. With Paddy's experience as a creative in the art industry, it's no wonder that she has established a space for fellow artists who need guidance and help in their careers. Paddy has been in the art industry for a long time, and apart from running the Netvvrk, she has also worked with galleries, curators and artists. Paddy was always great at drawing and was attracted towards the field of art, and ultimately, she found that writing about art brought her the satisfaction. She had opinions, and she was able to share them with the world on her blog. Art Problems

Does anyone even read art criticism any more? For years, the prevailing wisdom told us that the art industry needs art criticism to grow. And yet, today, the industry is larger than ever; the number of professional art critics in the country is dwindling, and those writing reviews aren't having them read. So, do we need art criticism? Is art criticism itself the problem? Is it too positive to be taken seriously or too negative to qualify as anything more than clickbait? In this episode of Art Problems, Paddy Johnson summarizes the recent online discussions about criticism, focusing on Sean Tatol's "Negative Criticism" and Ben Davis's "Is Criticism Too Positive" and explains why this conversation is relevant to artists. If you struggle to understand the media landscape, this podcast will help you understand the stakes so you can make better decisions about where to spend your time. Include "causality" and your "why": "The King died. Later, the queen died of grief" 4) Use the active voice and "I" statements 5) Unpack the metaphors in your work for the reader 6) Watch out for run-ons. No sentence should be longer than 2.5 lines in a Google Doc (Arial 11pt) 7) No more that 1 list per paragraph and no more than 3 items per list 8) Limit talk about your process to one sentence. Instead, focus on ideas 9) Length: People expect 2-3 paragraphs for a statement on your website. Don't forget to add a paragraph break after each 2 sentence block 10) Expect your statement to be ever-evolving (not static) **Bonus 11** Write so that a 5th grader could understand and avoid artspeak / jargon (i.e. hegemony, praxis, Anthropocene). Susan Carr captured my attention over a year ago when I saw the work she sent in to be a Studio Visit Artist and I was hooked. Soon I was able to see her work in person and again, I couldn’t stop looking and thinking about it. Susan is an artist’s artist. She works hard, she is in tune with the materials, and her work takes us to another place of thought and care. It was a pleasure to talk to Susan and hear about how art is central to her life.  Susan’s house is set up to support the various materials she works with, from paint to wood and fiber. She is fearless in her ability to dive into a new material that serves her needs to communicate a certain idea or feeling. Tactility is another central point in Carr’s work, you want to touch all of it. From the painted sculptures to the pieces hanging on a wall, you want to touch them and feel the impasto surface that reminds me of a homemade cake in the very best way. A cake that serves to show love and not a store-bought convenience. I know you will enjoy hearing from Susan as we discuss how she began making art, how having a family impacted her work, and a day in her life making. On this week's episode of the Hop Forward Podcast we talk to Master Brewer, Paddy Johnson, from WeBrew - home to the Windsor & Eton and Uprising brands - all about brewing and some of the challenges the industry faces in 2020. Having been in the brewing industry for over 40 years, my guest today has worked at 9 breweries in the UK, Australia and Canada. He was Area Production Director at the large Royal Brewery, Moss Side for 5 years producing over 3 million Hls of beer per annum at that site as well as also operating Newcastle brewery and Theakstons in Masham at the same time within what was then Scottish Courage. Prior to this he also held jobs such as General Manager at the Courage brewery in Bristol and Head Brewer at the Berkshire Brewery for Courage - Europe’s largest brewery at that time; and also spent time as a brewer with Bass at several breweries. But Master Brewer - Paddy Johnson’s impressive resume doesn’t stop there! The first view he ever saw being made whilst at Courage Brewery was the infamous ‘Imperial Russian Stout’; he helped to set up Innserve - an independent Trade dispense technical services, which services around 100,000 pub/bar accounts in the UK. Amongst other things, including being a seasoned beer judge and father to Kieran Johnson of Blackjack Brewing in Manchester, he is one of the Director of WEBREW which, as well as operating an 8,500Hl/annum brewery that was designed and built by the Board team, has two brand - the more traditionally positioned Windsor & Eton brand, producing an array of cask and bottled beers; and Uprising - a more craft, focused brand creating Imperial Stouts, Double IPAs and the kinds of beer styles we all know and love to see on keg lines. To say Paddy is knowledgeable is an understatement - he’s a well seasoned veteran of the brewing industry and has been around the block. So, where do you start when interviewing such a well seasoned brewer? When we met at Manchester’s Marble Brewery, who were kind enough to allow us use of the facilities for hosting and recording this week’s show, I wanted to ask about brewing beer from a master brewer’s perspective. And, although you might expect some deep cuts from a conversation like this - such as the complex chemistry that occurs when infusing hops with boiling worts at certain temperatures, or the effects of yeast fermentation under different pressures - it’s having knowledge-based firmly rooted in fundamentals and nailing it time and again which sets a Master Brewer apart… plus demonstrating their skills building and commissioning a brewery and being able to explain why you did it that way…! --- TODAY'S SHOW IS SPONSORED BY SSV LIMITED. It's been a rough news week. Between Thursday's testimonies of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Kavanaugh's near appointment to the Supreme Court Friday, many of us are exhausted. We would like a win for women.   Sometimes the quickest way to achieve that is to do it yourself. As such, this episode of Explain Me celebrates women who have made waves in the world of art and activism, through a series of interviews with four major figures—Mia Pearlman, Jenny Dubnau, Nancy Kleaver, and Mira Schor.  In the first half of the show, Mia Pearlman and Jenny Dubnau talk about their work pushing for changes at the city and state level and how being an artist makes that job easier. In the second half, Paddy Johnson and Nancy Kleaver talk about their new public art organization, PARADE, and Mira Schor talks about the history of feminism in art from the 1970's through to today, and her contributions. Jeff Crouse and Aaron Meyers present The World Series of 'Tubing at Eyebeam. An augmented reality card game, players compete against one another by selecting and presenting their "best" YouTube video clips. The audience then choose their favorite videos with a cleverly conceived audience response system using laser pointers. By blurring the distinctions between performer, audience, and participant, their work builds upon the inherent qualities of shared culture as it exists online. shot & edited by Emily Chen
