This week at Venture, Pastor Brandon kicks off our journey through the book of Ephesians, reminding us that the life we have in Christ is one of incredible blessing, identity, and purpose. Through the story of Hetty Green, a woman who lived in poverty despite her great wealth, we're challenged to stop living spiritually empty when we've already been given everything through Jesus. Paul's letter to the Ephesians shows us what it means to be chosen, redeemed, and adopted as God's sons and daughters. It's a call to live fully in the richness of God's grace. ⏱️ Timestamps 0:00 – Welcome to Venture Church Online0:34 – Hetty Green: The richest miser3:18 – Wealth and living like we're poor3:47 – Introducing the book of Ephesians6:07 – Paul's story and why he matters9:24 – Why Ephesus was such a big deal14:10 – Ephesians: deep theology and daily application20:28 – “In Christ” — the most important word23:19 – Benefit 1: Redemption25:59 – Benefit 2: Chosen by God34:24 – Benefit 3: Adopted into His family36:56 – Living like sons and daughters37:57 – Invitation to follow Jesus40:31 – Prayer and response

She was mocked by the press, feared by bankers, and labeled “the Witch of Wall Street.” Yet Henrietta “Hetty” Green quietly built one of the greatest fortunes of the Gilded Age, becoming a self-made billionaire in today's dollars when women weren't even allowed to vote.   In this episode, Dr. Felecia Froe unpacks Hetty's misunderstood genius: her contrarian investing style, her defiance of gender norms, and her unshakable belief that true wealth is about freedom not appearances. Hetty Green was the richest woman you've never heard of. In the late 1800s, she built a fortune worth billions today in a world designed to stop her. Women couldn't vote, couldn't own property, and weren't even allowed on the stock exchange floor. She was a force that couldn't be stopped. She bought entire towns, crushed railroad barons, and became the lender of last resort during financial panics. Her strategies still work today. This is the story of how an unwanted daughter became "The Witch of Wall Street," and a playbook for building lasting wealth and independence. ----- Upgrade: Get a hand edited transcripts and ad free experiences along with my thoughts and reflections at the end of every conversation. Iremember when I was a child growing up in a family that was very poor. I tell you what, my friend. The moment I found Jesus Christ as a 19-year-oldteenager, I became the richest person in the universe in Christ. And that'swhat Ephesians is about: knowing and understanding the riches of the glory theHis inheritance that I have in Jesus Christ. And that's why these three versesare so powerful to help us begin to understand what we need to learn and knowfrom this book.  Verse1 tells us that Paul is an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and thathe is writing this epistle “to the saints who are in Ephesus andfaithful in Christ Jesus.” The word saints there is a very importantword. It's a word that's used at least nine times in the book of Ephesians. Theword saint actually means “one who has been set apart”. Somebody that's beensanctified. Somebody that's been made holy. The moment you received JesusChrist, you were set apart for by the Holy Spirit for Christ and for His glory(Romans 6:3).  Imean all the riches in Christ were set apart for you in Christ at that moment. And so when we trust Christ in a sense we're taken out of this world and we'replaced in Christ in a heavenly world, we can enjoy heaven on earth. We do nothave to wait for the sweet by and by. And you were set apart to go to heavenone day. It's so sad that many of us do not understand or recognize the richeswe have in Christ.  Itkind of reminds me of the story I read recently of Hetty Green who lived from1834 to 1916. When she died she was worth over $100 million. In our moneytoday, that would be $2.5 billion. She was called the witch of Wall Street. Inthe Guinness Book of World Records, she's called America's greatest miser. It'sreported that she ate cold oatmeal because it cost to heat it. She ate mostlypies that cost 15 cents. She was said never to turn on the heat or use hotwater. She wore one old black dress and undergarments that she changed onlyafter they had been worn out. She did not wash her hands and she rode in an oldcarriage. One tale claims that Green spent half a night searching her carriagefor a lost stamp worth two cents. Another asserts that she instructed herlaundress to wash only the dirtiest part of her dresses, the hems, to savemoney on soap. The sad thing is she had a son that had to suffer a legamputation because she delayed in taking so long looking for a free clinic thathis case became incurable.  Howsad. But a sadder fact is the fact that there are so many Christians that areliving miserable lives because they do not know about and understand the richesthey have in Christ. I've often said the most miserable people in the world arenot lost people. They're enjoying the pleasures of sin for the few moments theymight have with it. It's the Christian who can't enjoy those pleasures of sinany longer because of the convicting power of the Holy Spirit in their lives, but they have never begun to comprehend the great riches they have in Christ.  That'swhat we're going to be talking about these next few days in Christ. In Christ.Matter of fact, the phrase “in Christ” is used, some 15 times in the book ofEphesians. We are “in Christ”. Oh, if we could only begin to understand that. Peterput it this way in 1 Peter 1:3-5: “Blessed be the God and Father of our LordJesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to aliving hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to aninheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reservedin heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvationready to be revealed in the last time.” Itrust today you will begin to recognize and know the riches of His glory of theinheritance that you have in Christ.  Godbless you, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!

Overview We Are Blessed with Every Spiritual Blessing (1:3) We Are Saved by Gods Grace (2:8-9) We Are Heirs of Gods Promises (3:6) We Are Part of Gods Family (4:4-6) We Are Enlightened by Gods Spirit (5:8-10) We Are Empowered by Gods Armor (6:10-11) More To Consider Ephesians, like so much of Pauls writing, underscores the truth that salvation is by faith alone and not through works or human striving. The first half of the epistle (chs. 13) addresses the central doctrines of the Christian faith, while the second half of the letter (chs. 46) describes how those spiritual truths should be reflected in a Christians behavior. Some would divide the second half of the letter into two sectionsfirst the Christians conduct and then spiritual conflict with the forces of evil. Such a division highlights the familiar passage describing the spiritual armor of a Christian. Radmacher, E. D., Allen, R. B., House, H. W. (1999). Nelsons new illustrated Bible commentary (p. 1529). T. Nelson Publishers. Several years ago, two students graduated from the Chicago-Kent College of Law. The highest ranking student in the class was a blind man named Overton and, when he received his honor, he insisted that half the credit should go to his friend, Kaspryzak. They had met one another in school when the armless Mr. Kaspryzak had guided the blind Mr. Overton down a flight of stairs. This acquaintance ripened into friendship and a beautiful example of interdependence. The blind man carried the books which the armless man read aloud in their common study, and thus the individual deficiency of each was compensated for by the other. After their graduation, they planned to practice law together. Gary Inrig, Life in His Body. She had gone down in history as Americas Greatest Miser, yet when she died in 1916, Hetty Green left an estate valued at over $100 million. She ate cold oatmeal because it cost to heat it. Her son had to suffer a leg amputation, because she delayed so long in looking for a free clinic that his case became incurable. She was wealthy, yet she chose to live like a pauper. Eccentric? Certainly! Crazy? Perhapsbut nobody could prove it. She was so foolish that she hastened her own death by bringing on an attack of apoplexy while arguing about the value of drinking skimmed milk! But Hetty Green is an illustration of too many Christian believers today. They have limitless wealth at their disposal, and yet they live like paupers. It was to this kind of Christian that Paul wrote the Epistle to the Ephesians. Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 8). Victor Books.

We'll explore how the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come can guide us towards a more meaningful and interconnected existence. Buckle up, as we journey through the realms of innovation, empathy, and the power of the human spirit." Segment 1: The Ghost of Ubuntu (Nelson Mandela) "Suddenly, Scrooge found himself standing in a bustling marketplace in Mumbai, India. The air was thick with the scent of spices and the sounds of lively chatter. The Ghost, a serene figure with a warm smile, introduced himself as Nelson Mandela." Integrate Heart-Brain Coherence: "Now, shift your focus to the vibrant Mumbai marketplace. Feel the warmth, the energy of the community. This creates a powerful association, making it easier to recall her message." However, there are key differences "Memory Palace: A global network of interconnected hubs, representing different cultures and communities." "Mnemonic Techniques: Method of Loci: Associate Ada Lovelace with the Silicon Valley startup and Nelson Mandela with the Mumbai marketplace." He highlighted key lessons from these events, including the importance of skepticism, recognizing red flags, and understanding how fraudsters exploit exclusivity and credibility to deceive. These historical stories underscore timeless lessons in vigilance and sound investment practices. Today we discuss... Steve Foerster, professor of finance and investment historian, discussed his background and books, including Trailblazers, Heroes, and Crooks and his work on the biography of Nobel Laureate Bill Sharpe. The psychology of exclusivity and trust in Madoff's scheme, including his reputation as NASDAQ chairman. The Bre-X mining scandal of the 1990s, detailing fraudulent gold sample salting, conspiracy theories surrounding Mike De Guzman, and the challenges of evaluating mining investments. Mark Twain's observation on mining, "a hole in the ground with a liar on top," was used to underscore skepticism in speculative industries. The 1960s Salad Oil Swindle, focusing on Tino De Angelis' fraudulent practices and their near-collapse of American Express. Buffett's significant investment in American Express, based on its strong reputation despite the scandal, resulted in a two-and-a-half-fold return within 18 months. Research and perseverance can lead to great returns, as Wall Street tends to sell indiscriminately during tough times. Warren Buffett's support of management during a crisis helped American Express recover and solidify its reputation. The tension between short-term profits and long-term value was central to Buffett's approach, focusing on long-term growth. Hetty Green, a 19th-century investor, was a pioneering value investor who predicted market trends and became a major player in railroads and mortgages. During the Panic of 1907, Hetty Green predicted the failure of a major trust company and later lent to New York City, preventing bankruptcy. Bobby Bonilla's deferred payment contract with the New York Mets showcased the importance of understanding time value of money and opportunity cost. The story of Cristiano Ronaldo's snubbing of Coca-Cola at a press conference led to a $4 billion market drop, but it was actually due to the stock's ex-dividend date, not his actions. The Coca-Cola stock drop was an example of correlation not equaling causation, teaching the importance of distinguishing between the two in investing. Miserly Ways-Hetty': Scrooge in Hoboken Hetty Green, the "Witch of Wall Street," was a real-life figure known for her extreme frugality and sharp business acumen. Her story bears similarities to the fictional character Scrooge in that both were immensely wealthy and known for their miserly ways. However, there are key differences. Hetty Green's wealth was not inherited, but rather amassed through her own shrewd investments. She was a pioneer in the field of finance, particularly in the area of short selling. Unlike Scrooge, who hoarded his wealth, Green invested her money wisely, often during financial crises. While Scrooge's miserliness was largely driven by greed and a lack of empathy, Green's frugality was more strategic. She lived a simple life and avoided unnecessary expenses, allowing her to accumulate vast wealth. She was also known for her generosity, donating millions of dollars to charity anonymously. Hetty Green's life in Hoboken was marked by both controversy and admiration. She was often criticized for her stinginess and eccentric behavior, but she was also respected for her financial acumen and philanthropic efforts. Her story is a fascinating example of a woman who achieved great success in a male-dominated field, despite facing significant challenges and prejudice. now, I would like to create a mnemonic about Ebenezer Scrooge meeting Hetty Green as The Ghost of Xmas Yet to Come. Joining me for this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast, is author Mark J. Higgins who has just published his excellent new book ‘Investing in US Financial History.' We begin by discussing the overall importance of understanding financial history and segue into a conversation about the comprehensive narrative of the US financial system from 1790 to the present which his book provides. Mark highlights the role of key figures such as Alexander Hamilton, discusses the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913 and introduces one of the least-known, but perhaps biggest trailblazing characters in US financial history: Hetty Green. Higgins also shares his insights on investor behavior and the cyclical nature of markets, as well as his views on the current crypto craze. Throw in Ray Dalio, Andrew Jackson, Robert Triffin and Charlie Munger and there's something for everyone in this excellent conversation. Hetty Green was straight from the Mayflower stock and considered to be a member of high society by the wealthy families in New York. Hetty's father and grandfather owned a successful whaling company. She was the sole heir to her grandfather's and father's holdings, however, she was cheated out of almost all that was promised. Since Hetty's family were devoted Quakers, Hetty was raised with the same values: thrift, economy, simplicity, hard work, devotion to Scripture and living by biblical principles. She began saving and investing money while she was still a young girl. This was a time when it was considered uncomely for a woman to practice any business skills. Hetty turned her savings and the inheritance that she received into a vast fortune. During the Gilded Age, she was known to be the richest woman in America. She was also called “the witch of Wall Street” by those who resented her achievements and carefulness.Growing up, I had heard only about a churlish woman who allowed her son to suffer an amputation rather than spend money on a doctor. Welcome to the special episode of Talking Billions. It's Berkshire Hathaway week, and some of you might be heading to Omaha for the company's annual meeting. I'll be there, and I might see some of you. Many of you might be following the event online. Others might be new to Buffett and his company. As a special treat this week, I have an episode with Adam Mead for you. Adam wrote an incredible, almost 800-page book about the history of Berkshire Hathaway. I read it all, and I highly recommend it. Berkshire is an investment vehicle managed by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, two legends in the investing world. There are many books about them and the company, but this one is unique. Adam did an incredible job researching the history of Berkshire long before Buffett's arrival at the helm, leaving us with hints about the future beyond Buffett. If you are a Buffett fan, I think you'll greatly enjoy hearing stories you might be hearing for the first time, or at least how we discuss them might offer a new perspective. If you are new to Buffett and Berkshire, it's a great primer in the history of a very successful investing duo, a one-of-a-kind company, and over 150 years of economic and industrial change in the United States. We start with the whaling fortunes of the northeast, we talk about Hetty Green, a legend of Wall Street of the late 1800s, to a story of the textile industry in America, to Buffett's arrival, and Berkshire's prosperous growth to a giant it is today holding a stake in Apple among others. We'll talk both about the success and some massive mishaps, too. Stay tuned until the end, where we talk about Buffett's lesser-known involvement with Amazon soon after the dot com bubble burst. Our conversation is a lesson in economic history seen through the experience of one company that changed and evolved and continues to flourish today. Adam J. Mead is a life-long student of business and capital allocation. He is the CEO and Chief Investment Officer of Mead Capital Management, LLC. Adam is also the founder of watchlistinvesting.com, a value investing newsletter. Adam spent over a decade in banking in commercial credit, including observing first-hand the after effects of the Great Recession and the long credit expansion afterward. Adam has been investing in public securities markets since 2004. Adam holds a Master of Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University. At the turn of the 20th century, Hetty Green was possibly the richest woman in America. She outsmarted the men of Wall Street at their own game, amassing a fortune that, today, would be worth billions. So, with all that money, why did she die in in squalor, wearing threadbare clothes, alienated from everyone she knew both personally and professionally, with the moniker of "The Witch of Wall Street?"Today, we tell the story of Hetty Green, and explore whether she was a monster who pinched pennies to the point that her son lost a leg because she refused to pay for medical care, or a tragic tale of what happens when money takes the place of love in someone's life. The age of the Founding Fathers was over. The Age of the Titans had begun.[12:00] By 1863 Carnegie was earning more than $45,000 a year from this and all his other investments, compared with a mere $2,400 from his railroad salary. Yet he understood that it was the contacts he made and the information he derived from his association with the railroad that made everything else possible.[13:00] More control. Less costs. More profit.[15:00] Technology is just a better way to do something: As a result of the process for transforming iron to steel that bore his name (Bessemer), a quantity of steel that might formerly have taken as long as two weeks to produce could now be made in fifteen minutes.[17:00] Carnegie starts his company during a financial panic. The best time to expand is when no one else dares to take the risk.[20:00] Already the best but still wants to do better: Even his key employees were not spared Carnegie's heavy-handed management style. To almost every positive report Carnegie's response was "Good, but let us do better."[21:00] Cut the prices, scoop the market, watch the costs, and the profits will take care of themselves.[21:00] Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire by James Wallace and Jim Erickson (Founders #140)[22:00] He could make steel more efficiently than any of them.[24:00] Henry Clay Frick: The Life of the Perfect Capitalist by Quentin Skrabec Jr. (Founders #75)[24:00] Like Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick used a lot of borrowed money to get his start in the coke business. There was a line in one of Rockefeller's biographies where it said “he was the greatest borrower I've ever seen.”[26:00] Frick knew his business down to the ground.[26:00] LIke Carnegie, Frick expands his business during an economic panic. Frick, who would later recall this as one of the most grueling times in his life, proved as undaunted in the face of adversity as Carnegie had been.[34:00] Carneige was accustomed to obedience from his subordinates, but if he expected unquestioned subservience from Henry Frick, he had gravely miscalculated.[36:00] Frick was no puppet, but rather a man willing to take considerable risks in defense of his principles.[37:00] Frick had ambition, a singleness of purpose, and a lack of self—doubt that even Carneige envied.[38:00] Carnegie would repeat the mantra time and again: profits and prices were cyclical, subject to any number of transient forces of the marketplace. Costs, however, could be strictly controlled, and in Carnegie's view, any savings achieved in the costs of goods were permanent.[39:00] On this issue the two men were of one mind. Frick had made his way in coke by the same reckoning that Carnegie had in rail and steel: if you knew your costs down to the penny, you were always on firm ground.[39:00] Frick had always understood how essential new technologies were in driving costs down. Cost control became nearly an obsession.[47:00] [Frick was shot] Only after he was finished with his day's work did Frick permit himself to be carried from the office to an ambulance.[49:00] You must not allow anything to discourage you in the least. Even if things do not go well for some time to come, or even if they should get much worse. Just keep at it, doing the best you can. Do not allow the fact that you are not getting along as well as you would like to lead you to put yourself in a compromising position.[1:03:00] Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. (Founders #83)[1:04:00] J.P. Morgan understood the folly of a long-term battle with the Carnegie Company, a firm that controlled its own sources of raw materials, transport, and manufacture, and that was far more deeply capitalized than his or any other of the upstarts. They might stay in the game for a while, and they might put a dent in Carnegie's armor, but in the end, Carnegie would run them into the ground, every one. Subscribe to listen to Founders Premium — Subscribers can ask me questions directly which I will answer in Ask Me Anything (AMA) episodes —I use Readwise to organize and remember everything I read.
