If I'm being honest, I have a mixed relationship with New Year's Resolutions and believe that you can start a new habit any day of the year. This is what this episode is all about - The Art of Creating Habits, whether it's to gear up for the new year or at any other day of your life. This is the first of a three episode series that I'll be doing on habits. I'm incredibly passionate about this topic and am going to share my tips over the next couple of episodes on how to build consistent habits, starting with using my most recent (crazy!) habit, going for daily dips in the ocean, as an example. We're going to cover how to transform your habits into deeply satisfying expressions of your identity, how to become consistent with them, and why building healthy habits is especially important if you're an empath. We're also going to talk about staying present and choosing habits that actually matter. I believe that committing to a new habit can open the door to an entirely new way of life for you, and can't wait to share what I've learned over the last decade of habit setting!  Topics: New Year's Resolutions and why they may or may not work when trying to build a new habit Catherine's most recent habit, going for daily swims in the ocean, and how it has impacted her life Mindset practices that help Catherine maintain habits for months, years or even indefinitely How to cultivate mindset strength to stay consistent with habits Why habit building is particularly important for empaths and how they allow you to take better care of yourself and others The idea that habits can be an expression of who you are and your identity  How to choose habits that make you feel satisfied and fulfilled    Episode Resources: Gay Hendricks, “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level” James Clear, “Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones” 6-Month Course on Mastering Presence Eve Rodsky, “Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too-Busy World”   Connect with Catherine: Website LinkedIn Instagram YouTube Sign up to receive my weekly digest on empathic entrepreneurship and hear from voices committed to spreading this message, sent straight to your inbox every Friday since 2016, here.    Work with Catherine: Interested in working 1:1 with Catherine or a certified coach on her team, or joining one of her premium mastermind programs? He also sheds light on some extremely difficult topics like school shootings, and Obama's historic singing of “amazing grace” while consoling families. This book shows me that anyone can be president and that it's a human's job because you see his humanity through these photos, not the “superhero” president that historically is how presidents are portrayed that makes us feel somehow separate from them, and unreachable. This 1978 published book drove immense controversy. Orientalism pushed heated debates surrounding the nature of Western attitudes towards the Middle East. It pushed millions of people to rethink their prejudices. Said argued that throughout Western history, writers on the Middle East, regardless of the somewhat varying attitudes of their day, reinforced an image of Arabs as uniform, incompetent, and unreflective. But to Said, “the Orient” was a creation of the Western imagination. This work spurred the removal of insensitive words at the beginning of Aladdin. I value this book because it allows us to see how the media is formed and how we can change it. It teaches you agency and power. Why We Can't Wait is an easy way to get into the psychology of MLK. It is a 1964 book by Martin Luther King Jr. about the nonviolent movement against racial segregation in the United States, and specifically the 1963 Birmingham campaign. The way it is written makes it understandable from a 1:1 perspective. I am connected to this because it helps a person be actionable in their own way about causes they care about. This spring, the Stanford National Black Alumni Association (https://www.stanfordblackalumni.org) biennale summit took place in Washington, D.C. and I organized my spring trip back to the U.S. around reconnecting with my fellow friends and alum and sharing my insights as a Glocal Citizen on a panel entitled, "Africa: Bridging the Diasporic Divide." I was curious how she came up with the title, what it was like to write it and what she hoped it would do for readers. She shared a pivotal moment that she had as she was giving her daughter a bath that changed how she thought about her life and her career. We talked about the term Priority-Aligned Living that she has in the book and what it means to her and how readers should think about it. She organized the book around three parts that can be referred to over and over throughout the transitions of life and career. Her explanations of those three parts were very impactful.   We also talked about what it is like to be a working mother with a high pressure job and the transition she went through from being a lawyer to becoming an entrepreneur and coach. Have you found that more people have come to you during and after the pandemic to find ways to deal with the stress and anxiety? We talked about the impactful work that she is doing with law firms and her individual clients to help them find balance. What is catastrophizing? Always thinking the worst is going to happen in a situation. Why did we start doing this? Helped us survive all the dysfunction and trauma we lived through. Allowed us to be one step ahead of the problems. Why being prepared for the worst was good to start out with as a kid. We were always ready, day or night, to deal with the worst. We could never let our guard down. How it turned to being bad for us. We started limiting our choices. Didn't take chances for fear that the worst would happen. Started to always see things as being negative. Did have fun and didn't enjoy life as a problem was only a second away. What can we do about it? Therapy Meditation Mindfulness (Is it healthy for me to always think the worst is going to happen? Is it true?) Be in the moment. Self parent (imagine yourself as a kid, go up to him, and hug him). If you're a leader or aspiring leader wanting to write a book, whether it's a book about your personal life or your expertise, today's episode is for you.In this week's episode, Kele has a conversation with Hollis Citron, owner of I am Creative and Express Yourself Publishing. Hollis is on a mission to make creativity accessible to everyone by exposing them to new possibilities. She is passionate about helping people build the confidence to recognize, encourage, and express the innate creativity that they are born with. Hollis believes that creativity goes beyond the pencil and the brush. Creativity is your unique and original exploration, expansion, and expression of your imagination. According to Hollis, even if you are not “an artist,” you are a creative being. You are creative because you are the only person who can add your gifts to the things you create. You are creative because only you can express your ideas and greatness with the world. Here's the episode at a glance:Hollis shares why she started her businesses, I Am Creative, and more recently, Express Yourself Publishing. She discusses in-depth why she's on a mission to expand the definition of creativity.Hollis talks about the importance of meeting authors and potential authors where they are, helping them feel comfortable, and creating a safe space where they can explore and tell their stories in their own way.She believes that the biggest challenge that authors and potential authors face today is being in their own way and overthinking the writing process. We get into the incredible benefit of going with a nontraditional publishing house and how that's expanded opportunities for more aspiring authors to get published. Hollis offers some great tips for getting over the dreaded writer's block to get you back into your writing flow.  Hollis recommends reading The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks to help you get out of your own way.You can connect with Hollis Citron at https://www.iamcreativephilly.com and if you'd like to get involved in her next multi-author book, contact her for a quick conversation.  If you enjoyed this conversation with Hollis Citron, please share it with a leader or aspiring leader who'd like to write a book, and let's get our stories out there and help others with our expertise. Connect with Kele:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetailoredapproach/    Website: https://thetailoredapproach.com

“You are worthy simply because you exist.” - tune in to find out how a simple mindset shift like this one can help turn your life around!    Episode Introduction:  From being homeless as a child to making it as a multiple six-figure entrepreneur, our guest today is truly a testament to what sheer determination can do for a person.   Episode Summary:  Dr. Naieema Jackson walks us through her journey of consistently wanting to prove her self-worth to others until the age of 31 to then acknowledging her own self-worth and doing what made her happy. She talks about her challenges, the lessons she has learned, her victories, some jaw-dropping anecdotes as well as how she helps other female entrepreneurs succeed in their business with her strategies.    Main Takeaways: What you are experiencing doesn't define you. Sometimes, even when you're not ready, you need to take just the first step towards your goals. When people are speaking with hatred, it's about their own inner demons and not the person they are talking to. When you start questioning your self-worth, focus on the evidence of everything that you have accomplished in life. It is important to remind yourself that you are worthy regardless of what you achieve simply because you are a person. Be mindful of what the people around you are telling you about your self worth. First focus on what you want your life to look like and then align your business goals to that vision.   Fun Facts About Dr. Naieema Jackson: One book that she recommends all our listeners is The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks.   Help us mentor other entrepreneurs through the power of storytelling by rating us and leaving a positive review on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/law-chat-with-girija/id1528580730   Get the FREE Five Day Legal Audit: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/5-day-free-legal-audit-challenge/   Join Law Chat for Entrepreneurs Free Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lawchat   Find Dr. Naieema Jackson: Website: https://thedeterminedfempreneur.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drnaieema/ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ditchthatshift Podcast: https://thedeterminedfempreneur.com/podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjSyLRVUg228xMcFuzLIVxQ?view_as=subscriber Get the visual experience, watch the videocast for the episode here: https://youtu.be/ufUxZmzFfNI   Connect With Girija: Website: https://www.gbplaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gbplaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GBPLaw/   Get Ready To Use Contract Templates At: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/

Most people stay stuck in one place and sabotage themselves because they fear failure, but according to "The Big Leap" by Gay Hendricks, a fear of success can be just as debilitating and keep us from becoming a bigger version of ourselves.  For Jane Sagalovich, this insight resonated heavily with her, helped her uncover why she was stuck, and allowed her to realign her nervous system so she doesn't sabotage herself before success.  In this episode, she shares how this book impacted her life in so many ways, and we also talk about what it takes to create and scale a great course.  Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode  Why you don't need to customize everything in our programs to get results The idea that everything must be custom to get people results is a misconception, often driven by ego and insecurity. When people teach live they want that visual feedback from the other person, but you can also create enough confidence in what you're teaching.  How to set a new thermostat for our lives    Much of our identity is wrapped up in the set point of what we believe we're capable of, and that makes us afraid to succeed beyond that. If there's a level of success we're used to and if we try to go above it, we'll sabotage ourselves back down to neutral. You have to bring more awareness to your decision and watch for areas where you're not allowing yourself to go past your set point or present self.  How to watch where you apply your creativity  Many coaches apply their natural urge for creativity to the structure of the business and instead of building something long-lasting, they find themselves constantly pivoting, creating new courses and starting from the bottom. We would benefit more from something that doesn't change that much for the audience, and then find an outlet that allows us to scratch our creative itch, without messing with our core business.  Guest Bio  Jane Sagalovich is a coach, strategist and the founder of Scale Your Genius. She founded Scale Your Genius in 2018 to help people whose work makes a difference in people's lives make a bigger impact, make more money, and have more freedom in how they do their work.  For more information and to find out about Jane's program head over to https://scaledgenius.com/ (https://scaledgenius.com/). In today's Team Meeting episode we have another great interview. Have you every been afraid to be your full self at work, in a relationship or with family and friends? I have and it's a horrible feeling of loneliness. Today we talk about how to get comfortable taking up space.  When we say "take up space" we mean be yourself, go into a room and don't question if you're worthy of being there. Apply for a job and don't be afraid you're not smart enough. Go on a date and don't worry about not being interesting enough. Take. Up. Space. This is all a part of being yourself.  I'm talking to my friend Rafat Fields, who is a Purpose Cultivator (I love that term). She helps women align their purpose for profit. We met in a Mastermind group and she has helped me to define my audience for the work that I'm doing now. She can help you too. You can reach out to her here  Another message from this episode is that you must learn to be kind to yourself. It is an act of bravery to accept and unconditionally love who you are. It is also a journey to learn how to practice kindness for yourself. A book we reference in today's session is The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendrick. I highly recommend it. I'm listening to the audio version now.  The concept of operating in your zone of genius fascinates me and is something I aim to do.I also referenced the ebook I wrote that's on amazon. If you want to hear my story about my journey to love myself through hip replacement surgery. Check it out here.Let's start the meeting.

You will attract fewer people but will attract people who are more willing to invest in you. In a job description, describe the candidate: Who the perfect person is for the role, and what the job would do for the person beyond a paycheck. Your business must stand for something in order to attract employees who will be committed. Match a job description that underscores what is important to your ideal employee at that stage in their life.    QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Be willing to suck! Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Flexible, confident, and courageous. What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? If I were committed to being the best in the world at what I do, what would I be doing now? What book would you recommend to leaders? The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Pick on thing. As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” To be out of the box, you need to ask forgiveness rather than permission.   CONNECT WITH ANGELA Twitter: https://twitter.com/authorincubator (@authorincubator) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/authorincubator/ (@authorincubator) Website: http://www.TheAuthorIncubator.com (http://www.TheAuthorIncubator.com)   CONNECT WITH JOSH LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/joshuafriedeman (@joshuafriedeman) Instagram: https://instagram.com/joshuafriedeman (@joshuafriedeman) Email: josh@friedemanleadership.com   Want a FREE list of weekly action steps to improve your leadership? These are books that have impacted me that I want to share with you. In June, I will share different books on mindset, and I again share how my own thinking has been influenced and even changed for the better by these new ideas. This week, I review The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks. I listened to this book twice in 2016 because it had such a profound effect on me. Gay talks about our mindset having an internal thermostat that limits how much success and happiness we allow ourselves to feel. I found this to be true about my own dealing with credit card debt. Gay shares how he was able to adjust his own level of happiness and how to remove the blocks and beliefs that get in your way to being happier.  You can also watch this as a video review on YouTube.  Follow me on Goodreads! The One Thing Holding You Back From Massive Success   Regardless of the industry we are in, success is the goal, but it isn't easy to achieve. It takes time and effort and oftentimes, we have to overcome mental blocks that keep us from attaining that success. In this episode, we're talking about breaking through that upper limit to achieve sales success.    Limiting your sales success Gay Hendricks wrote the book, The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level. It is a powerful book that talks about how we set limitations and don't take big leaps because of fear. As a salesperson, we set limits on ourselves about what we do on a day-to-day basis. This may include calling clients or setting appointments. We  have these upper limits, the proverbial glass ceiling,  we impose on ourselves. These are the limits we don't go beyond.    For example, one salesperson may limit himself to three appointments a day and when they try to go beyond that, they somehow find ways to sabotage themselves. This is because he isn't comfortable with success that is outside of his norm. He feels the need to move himself back into his comfort zone, a place where he feels like he belongs.    The same is true in relationships. Sometimes when things are going well, fighting starts. This isn't just a mystical force suddenly showing its face. The fight is something we conjure up in our minds. We allow it and find ways to let it intrude on our lives. It turns a small incident into a big deal. It keeps us at a lower level.    Go beyond your comfort zone The sales reps that go beyond their comfort zone are the ones who typically thrive but this requires you to put yourself in an uncomfortable position. It requires you to take the big leap.    How can you achieve your sales success? How can you go to the next level of your sales performance?    In this pandemic, some of you may have already set your proverbial glass ceilings. You may have decided that your opportunities are limited and convinced yourself that you're not going to be successful in this current season. The truth is, sometimes the worse things happen because we stop taking action. Are you showing up on time for virtual meetings? In what areas are you showing a lack of effort?   The Sales Evangelists are still offering the same services now as they did before.  The organization, however, is receiving more opportunities, even with this pandemic. Donald realized that this was because he didn't limit what he could do as a leader of the organization.    Constantly look for areas to improve  There is always room for success when you break through the ceiling. This may be through prospecting, your LinkedIn outreach, or your social selling. Whatever those limits are, go beyond them, and position yourself as someone who can solve the problems of your ideal customers.    It's not easy to take the big leap, especially if you are making big changes, but there's no other way except to break through the limitations you've set.    Be the person who can solve the problem for your ideal customer. #SalesSolution   “The One Thing Holding You Back From Massive Success” episode resources   If you are interested in more sales stories, you can talk to Donald directly. When are you going to tackle your bucket list? My guest today is Alan Worden, a serial entrepreneur focused on leisure-seeking Baby Boomers who founded Scout Real Estate Capital. For Alan, there came a time when he realized it may be now or never if he wanted to chase his dreams. In 1999, Alan asked 10 trusted friends and advisors for advice. He asked each if it was a good idea to drop prosperous careers and go sailing from the U.S. to New Zealand with his wife. Independently, each of them said “If you can do it, do it now. It's never going to get any easier.” That was in 1999. Soon after that, Worden spent exactly 365 days sailing to New Zealand in an Everest-sized adventure you'll love to hear about. (Including a brush with death I won't spoil for you.) He spent all that time and most of his money to make it happen. For him, it was as much about conquering fear as it was about a bucket list item to cross off. See, Alan's biggest fear is the ocean. And he crossed 18,000 miles of it in his “do it now” year. The lessons he learned on that sailboat have carried him to new heights in life and in this episode you'll learn just what they are.
