Royal Lily Paper Co. (based in Farmington, MO) bloomed from a remarkably selective high school program called, INCubatoredu, in which students are divided into teams and create a startup business through guided instruction and real life circumstances. The Royal Lily Team consists of four young women: Ella, Jessica, Lillian, and Finnly, who developed the idea to sell earth-friendly cards and stationery that will reduce contribution to the increasing rates of pollution. Flower seeds are included in the cards' material which gives customers an opportunity to then plant the card. Today we are continuing our conversation with Katie Hart of Odd Daughter Paper Co. If you missed the first part of our conversation, head back and listen to episode 304. In that episode, Katie and I talk about how she got started with her product-based business, and why you don't necessarily need to exhibit at trade shows to be successful with selling wholesale. Katie waited 10 years to do her first show, and we're talking about it in episode 304. For today's episode, which is part two of our conversation, Katie is taking us behind the scenes of her business and what it is like running this business with her sister by her side. We also talk about setting boundaries in business and how the best lessons truly come from just years of experience. Katie Hart is a self-taught illustrator and the founder of a stationery brand called Odd Daughter Paper Co. She founded that company in 2013 and it began as a side hustle that she ran on the weekends and during her lunch hours; it evolved into a full-time brand that both Katie and her sister now work at. Michelle helped on the side for years and finally joined the team full-time in 2022. Katie does all the illustrating and hand lettering while Michelle handles operations, wholesale, and sales and marketing. They both love brainstorming sentiments for cards and their goal is to sound like a real friend in their products, whether that's clever, sincere, encouraging, or empathetic. Odd Daughter is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico and draws a great deal of creative inspiration from the desert. Today's episode is brought to you by our free, on-demand wholesale audio series. In this audio series, I'll walk you through the biggest mistakes and most common questions folks have when they are starting and scaling wholesale—so you don't make the same mistakes myself and others did. You can binge this audio series in less than an hour and you can listen on the go in your favorite podcast player. No fluff here, just concrete action steps and answers to help you simplify and strengthen your wholesale sales. Yes, friend, you can be successful with wholesale without exhibiting at trade shows. This is a question that I frequently hear from our Paper Camp students and today's guest is a shining example of how slow, intentional growth without trade shows leads to success. Today's guest is Paper Camp Alum & Advisory Board member, Katie Hart of Odd Daughter Paper Co. Katie launched Odd Daughter in 2013 as a side hustle. The brand evolved into a thriving product brand whose revenue primarily comes from wholesale and her products are sold in stores throughout the world. This was such an inspiring conversation that I decided to break it up into two parts. On today's episode, which is part 1, Katie shares how Odd Daughter got started, the intentional decisions she's made along the way to make her business growth more sustainable, and we talk about her decision to exhibit at her first wholesale trade show in 2023—after 10 years of successfully scaling wholesale. Today's episode is brought to you by our free, on-demand wholesale audio series. In this audio series, I'll walk you through the biggest mistakes and most common questions folks have when they are starting and scaling wholesale—so you don't make the same mistakes myself and others did. Dr Clarissa Giebel narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. Clarissa discusses the process of co-designing a board game, the Dementia Inequalities Game, as an innovative way to share research findings on dementia care inequalities. Through co-production workshops involving people with dementia, carers, care professionals, and Third Sector representatives, the team developed the game's concept. They collaborated with game designers, secured funding, and involved Third Sector organisations to ensure successful production and distribution. Dr. Giebel emphasises the importance of creativity in research dissemination, encouraging academics to explore alternative avenues like games, podcasts, and talks to reach a broader audience and generate greater impact. The game aims to raise awareness, promote discussion, and educate players about dementia and its associated inequalities. We're getting down with Marxy Marx and the Foucky Bunch! In this episode, Alyssa and Brendane discuss reproductive justice, dispossession, and the stakes for Black birthing people in a post-Roe v. Wade world with Dr. Mali Collins (IG | Twitter). What's the Word? Dispossession. We draw a thread through Karl Marx's primitive accumulation, Rosa Luxemburg's The Accumulation of Capital, and David Harvey's accumulation by dispossession to thinking about the ways Black birthing people have been dispossessed of reproductive rights and motherhood. What We're Reading. "The Meaning of Liberty" in Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty by Dorothy Roberts. In this chapter Roberts argues that we must reshape (or perhaps exceed) our understanding of reproductive liberty by accounting for the experiences and needs of Black women. What in the World?! We are joined by Assistant Professor Mali Collins to discuss who expansive definition of reproductive labour, the spectacle of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the whiteness of the abortion access movement, what we can do to survive this moment in community, reconnecting with your body, and black maternal dispossession. The transition to motherhood – It's one of the most magical and beautiful journies that life has to offer. It's also one of the scariest journies to prepare for, especially for small business owners because there are just so many unknowns. And if you're an expecting mom and entrepreneur, you're probably asking things like, “How much money should I be saving to prepare for maternity leave?” or “Realistically, how much will I be able to work when my baby comes, and should I consider hiring support in my business?” That's why today we're bringing Brittany DeSantis, the watercolour artist, calligrapher, and instructor behind Peak Paper Co. on the show to share her strategies for preparing her business to continue generating revenue while also supporting her needs and goals in her new chapter of life, fas she welcomed her precious baby daughter, Francesca into the world! How Tiny Things Create Transformative ChangesEver thought about how the greatest of achievements could stem from simple, often ignored ideas? What you'll hear today is the story of an impressive stationery line built out of a tiny thought of making kid-friendly thank you notes that encourage children to create art, practice writing, and learn the humble yet powerful lesson of gratitude.Ashley Campbell, my guest for the show today, does not just curate the products her company sells, but has instead designed and patented the product that is now being praised by parents and children all over the world. She is the Founder of the Coral and Blue Paper Company, a patented and trademarked line of stationery that's designed to make thank you notes easier for kids to do. An idea that seeded out of her family's long-held tradition of giving thanks, Ashley saw the immense potential in turning the idea into a business when she discovered that the stationery that her kids really needed did not exist. There were other products out there, but not the kind of notes that would provide kids with the necessary design support that she saw a need for.Ashley developed her design and thus created the key – to unlocking an innovative, immersive small business idea.Today, she sits with me to explain how she did that to become a product designer and entrepreneur as a stay-at-home mom and her thoughts on patenting, innovating, and creating something remarkable out of a thing that could seem very little at the beginning.Of the many emotions and lessons shared during our conversation was the idea of spreading joy to the community through work. Ashley shares how her company has helped children in Africa overcome trauma, battle PTSD, and experience subtle joys using her thank you notes and how they're using it to express their most sincere emotions on paper. Here's a quick look into the episode. [03:35] Meet Ashley Campbell, product designer and entrepreneur, and learn why she decided to build a business that makes stationery for kids.[06:58] How to get your kids to sit down and just start writing – don't tell them what you're going to make them do, arrange the environment, the markers, paper, and all necessary stationery, to get them to start writing.[08:54] How to protect and patent your design/ product as a business owner: reference: US Patent and Trademark Office[010:19] Ashley explains her sales structure and what is driving most of her sales[012:47] Ashley's thoughts on giving back to the community through her company and how her thank you notes are helping as trauma therapy for children in Africa [15:35] Ashley talks about her children's response to her business and the different ways in which they're using the thank you cards to express their love, concern, and gratitude to people, including thanking those who're providing their service in different ways. [18:03] The ups and downs of Ashley's entrepreneurial journey, in particular, the challenges of being a stay-at-home entrepreneur mom.[19:27] How does Ashley balance work and personal life as a mompreneur? (and her advice on limiting time spent on social media) She also explains how the Planoly app helps plan her social media usage.[24:12] Ashley's book recommendation for you: The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey[24:38] A peek into Ashley's next milestones and why she wants to pull back and get back to the basics [27:48] Why starting with small batch production can be helpful for your business[29:07] Where to connect with AshleyAbout Ashley CampbellAshley Campbell is the Founder and Product Designer at Coral and Blue Paper Company, a stationery manufacturing company that designs and sells thank you notes for children.Connect with Ashley!Website | LinkedIn

This week's interview is with Chris Willard from The Great Gift & Paper Co. Chris began her career as a registered nurse where medicine was her first love. At that time, as crazy as it sounds, there weren't a lot of nursing opportunities fresh out of nursing school so rather than working in the hospital unit of a local prison, she took a job with Johnson & Johnson as a sales rep. After working as a sales rep for a very long time, one day she decided to open up a retail boutique and the rest is history. The Great Gift and Paper Co. is a boutique that has evolved from my brick-and-mortar store La Belle Maison. The name change to The Great Gift and Paper Co. arose to be more reflective of what my shop morphed into--more gifts and paper. Take a listen to Chris' journey from working with Johnson & Johnson, raising a family all while continuing to build what is now The Great Gift & Paper Co. Jim Patterson from Somerset, England has been making paper for over 50 years. What’s more impressive is Jim has no intention of slowing down. During the conversation you will hear the old pitt mill creak and moan as it churns power through a set of gears that date back 400 years. Two Rivers Paper Co., has been producing paper since 1988 and used by artists all over the world. This type of handmade paper dates back to 500 years before Christ, and it was only in the 1800’s that paper was mass produced by machine. Jim and his team are not stalwarts for tradition either. They have adapted their techniques and recipes to improve their quality and process, while not sacrificing anything along the way. Two Rivers Paper Co is a small, yet mighty team that clearly has pressed out a thin niche within this unique craft of custom paper making. Before you give this episode a listen, try to imagine a 400 year-old stone mill situated within a rural park. This may help you with the sound in the background and the limited bandwidth available in this area. We sorted it all out and it was a pleasure to have Jim on the show. · https://www.tworiverspaper.com/· https://www.instagram.com/tworiverspaper/

The High Ground features talks with the leaders of the Cannabis industry. Farmers, CEOs, public officials, anyone making an impact on the cannabis community and beyond. The cannabis industry generates an awful lot of waste for a product that just grows out of the ground. Packaging, cultivating, processing, not to mention specialty safety lock packaging, that often comes from overseas. Erica Halverson is the CEO and founder of TINY e PAPER Company, which is hoping to convince the entire cannabis industry to ditch paper products, in exchange for hemp. While Erica’s company is still in the prototyping phase with most of their products, she's designing a hemp-based replacement for every single paper product that a dispensary, or cannabis company might need. Including some things that you might not think about at it first like business cards, and even hemp-based toilet paper. This is all part of what she describes as a mission to save the world with hemp.
Commercial scale hemp paper with CEO of TINY e PAPER, Erica Halverson. TINY e PAPER CO makes 100% pure hemp paper on a commercial scale within a nominal cost increase over its tree paper version. They make their hemp paper out of hemp stalks and the waste from CBD Extractors, taking care of 2 problems within the cannabis industry and beyond. Selling their products/running their companies are using a smarter resource than trees and utilizing a lot of waste being generated by a rapidly growing category. Erica started TINY e PAPER after a serendipitous conversation over happy hour with a friend about hemp paper in Nov 2017. The proverbial lightbulb went off, and TINY e PAPER was born. Here too is where she started her own hemp education and realized just how important and special this plant is. Erica has found some of the best and brightest in hemp and other skill sets such as marketing and branding expertise and has added them to the TINY e TEAM as advisors and product developers. She is creating a hemp movement, and that requires participation from a larger group. You can join them on their mission to save the planet one plant at a time by checking out their website.
For centuries, entrepreneurs and leaders have used the hand written letter as a vital tool to communicate. In the world we live in today, its an art that can easily be lost in the noise. That’s why our guests today founded Press On Paper Company. They understand how powerful the written word can be in the form of a letter or even just a thank you card. One of their mottos is “A Good Word Changes Everything”, and with their first line of unique stationary, the Press On team is encouraging leaders to use their words for good. This is the story of Press On Paper Company with two of their founders Graham Williams & Jared Cagle.
GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!Welcome to episode 2 of Buddy’s Buddies!Thank you so very much for joining me for the second one - whether I am seeing you again after the first podcast or if this is your first listen, your ears and attention are entirely appreciated and I really hope you dig this one. This is the first episode I recorded with more than one guest, and luckily for me those very guests were Bobby and Kate of Telegramme Paper Co., based here in Margate! We recorded this in their previous studio located near Dane Park, surrounded by a very attention grabbing collection of their own work, not to mention paraphernalia and amazing trinkets and (finally a chance to crowbar in my favourite word) tchotchkes. A tchotchke is a little decorative object. Love that word.“We are our own clients…”We cover a ton of chapters, tangents and forks in the road as you can imagine, including toddler mornings, studying alongside one another, gig poster fascinations and legalities / codes of conduct, sketching fathers, their Eastleigh and Midlands upbringings, problem solving in design and illustration, the old days of Telegramme as well as its origin story and evolution, the two of them teaming up and growing more powerful, making things they would want to have on their own walls, being a tourist where you live, the idea of commissioning themselves, rules of threes in colour palettes, processes, the beauty of restriction, influences and heroes and not getting too close, Americana and vintage ephemera, family and work balance, and all in between!Truly inspirational talk here from two masters of the game, with nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout and just a real uplifting one to propel you properly into the weekend and week ahead! This week we have a great episode in store for you - one that will definitely resonate with any of you who are hustling through a day job to fund your dream job. Emily Marks, once a forensic accountant, took the leap and left a stable job to pursue her passion. She is now the businesswoman behind Carina Paper Co., a stationery company inspired by her Italian heritage and from her heart as a new mom, wife, daughter, and friend. On today's episode, Emily gives us all the details on how she turned her side hustle into a full-time gig. She tells us the reason she left her job with a major accounting firm and how her former role actually helps her in business now. We talk about the importance of strategic planning, project management, and how being in a state of discomfort provides space for personal growth. Finally, we talk about the danger of overthinking things and why sometimes, you just have to go for it. ON TODAY’S EPISODE: Emily’s pivot from accounting to stationery Her business launch timeline Planning ahead vs being in the now How she deals with frustrating aspects of the business The need to celebrate what we’ve accomplished Growing into your strengths The importance of prioritizing for future growth When to take that chance KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “Getting the designs out of my head and onto actual products definitely took the longest time, but then all the details came together.” - Emily Marks “I like to try to look at it like my biggest competition is myself.” - Emily Marks “There's enough people in this industry and in this world, and we all can make a good product, if you have something that resonates with people.” - Emily Marks “You can't focus just on today. You have to look at the whole, the last few months, and also give yourself a little bit of a break.” - Emily Marks “Sometimes in that hustle for the next thing, we forget to celebrate what we've accomplished along the way... We need to celebrate the successes that we're having right now.” - Katie Hunt “I'm a firm believer that you only grow and you only learn when you're uncomfortable because I think when you're comfortable, no matter what you're doing in life, it's just status quo.” - Emily Marks “As small business owners, we don't always have a ton of time, or a ton of money, and so how do we balance the different needs in our business, and what we should keep on our plate as the CEO?” - Katie Hunt “You have to make sure every time you're reaching out, you're reaching out with valuable information .” - Emily Marks “Marketing is just an interesting beast, and I think it's something that is always going to be a challenge for me because it's not as systematic.” - Emily Marks “Marketing is not a one and done type of thing, it’s constantly reiterating what you're doing and changing things for the different ways that we can communicate with people.” - Katie Hunt “Especially in the small business world, I think if we spend too much time thinking about it, I won't do it.” - Emily Marks “Let's get stuff out in the world and see what happens, and then go from there.” - Katie Hunt “My biggest piece of advice is, make sure the time is right for you, but just do it. Go out there” - Emily Marks CONNECT WITH EMILY MARKS: Website: http://www.carinapaperco.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/carinapaperco Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/carinapaperco Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/carinapaperco JOIN US FOR PROOF TO PRODUCT’S 100th EPISODE!
