In the January 2023 issue of Editor & Publisher Magazine, E&P featured an article about Dr. Peter Laufer's book, “Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer,” and the subsequent film documentary "Slow News" that speaks to how media companies chasing "clicks" in a digital age has led to the erosion of quality journalism and the public's trust. However, what this professor of journalism and James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon was chasing was a personal dream to save the local cities newspaper — The Eugene (OR) Register-Guard. In a recent article for the local weekly entitled "How to Save the 'Guarded-Register, ' Dr. Laufer writes, "We in Eugene are witnessing the slow murder of our daily newspaper. But maybe, just maybe, what's rapidly becoming too thin to wrap fish and line the bird cage, can still be saved." He goes on to state, "When what's now the Gannett Company — the corporate monster that owns more U.S. newspapers than any other — bought the R-G, butchery began: de facto pink slips to venerable reporters and editors and photographers in the form of buyouts, and local news coverage replaced with outdated reporting from elsewhere via Gannett's USA TODAY network.” Dr. Laufer also recently published an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed entitled "A Plan to Save the Daily Paper." He told the story of how he approached Gannett to explore the idea of having his students take over the newspaper writing. Within the piece, he reports that he began the process by calling CEO Mike Reed and was connected to Amalie Nash, the Gannett senior vice president of local news and audience development, who performed a “gracious” entrée to Gannett's senior vice president for corporate development, Jay Fogarty. Laufer states that Fogarty wrote a note to him saying that “the Register-Guard is a paper we plan to own and operate long-term." However, in a subsequent phone conversation about the idea of offering the paper to the University, Laufer writes that Fogarty said, "I'm all for it when the paper stops making money. Glad we're talking. But at this point, it does make some money." In this 173rd episode of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with Peter Laufer, Ph.D., an award-winning journalist, professor of journalism, James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon and author of "Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer." We ask Laufer about his recent campaign to get Gannett to donate the city's paper of record, The Eugene Register-Guard, to the school and his views on the media industry today.

BoF's Daniel-Yaw Miller discusses streetwear's evolution from subculture to high fashion favourite — and whether the aesthetic's waning influence spells its end. Background: After years of build up, from its origins in cultural movements like New York's hip-hop scene and LA's skating community to early commercialisation in the early 2000s from brands like Fubu and Stussy and Japanese designers Nigo and Hiroshi Fujiwara, by the late 2010s, streetwear found itself at the centre of luxury fashion. The breaking point came in 2018, when, after success at his label Off-White, Virgil Abloh was named creative director of Louis Vuitton. But lately, streetwear institutions like Bape and Stussy have been losing heat — and luxury brands are pivoting away from streetwear staples like hoodies and sneakers. “Streetwear brands are more commercial and less connected to the actual street culture where they found their roots,” said BoF editorial associate Daniel-Yaw Miller. Key Insights: Streetwear brought items like puffer jackets and hoodies, graffiti details and logo-centric designs to high fashion runways. Lately, designers have been more focused on harder shoes, knitwear and tailoring. But, streetwear-centric items haven't disappeared from brands' assortments, they're more absorbed into the core offerings — and in consumers' day-to-day wardrobe. A new crop of brands, including Daily Paper, Corteiz and Free The Youth, are making the case for streetwear's enduring fashion relevance. Streetwear mainstay Supreme is still driving growth with its savvy marketing and collaborations. Owner VF Corp. said it expects the label to generate $600 million in revenue this year — up from $500 million when it was acquired in 2020. Additional Resources:Why Supreme Sold to VF Corporation: In a deal that values the New York streetwear brand at $2.1 billion, Supreme picks up a long-term partner with back-end prowess and ambitions to scale it past $1 billion in annual sales. Is Streetwear Still Cool? Luxury brands may have pivoted away from sneakers, puffer jackets and hoodies, but new labels like Corteiz and Free The Youth are making a case for street culture's enduring relevance in fashion.Follow The Debrief wherever you listen to podcasts. Daily Paper is an unlikely name for a fashion brand founded as a blog by three childhood friends from Ghana, Morocco and Somalia who met while living in Amsterdam. But there you have it. My guest today is Jefferson Osei, who along with his childhood friends Abderrahmane Trabsini and Hussein Suleiman, first started a blog – hence the name Daily Paper – that focused on their shared love for music, art, fashion, and culture. All that changed when they released a small collection of t-shirts that went viral. Today Daily Paper is a growing luxury fashion brand Inspired by African heritage –as well music, art, fashion and culture – translated toward a more western narrative. With retail stores in Amsterdam, New York and London – and fans like F1 driver Lewis Hamilton – it's full steam ahead for this forward thinking brand. On our 7th episode we welcome the founder of Surf Ghana - Sandy Alibo. Surf Ghana is an incredible collective that uses the practice of extreme sports as a driver for diversity in education, social inclusion, and the empowerment of the youth. Sandy's been able to start this organization after identifying an opportunity within Ghana that she felt needed real attention and exposure. Through the work of her collective, she's been able to galvanize creatives in Ghana around Skateboarding and Surfing. About 5 years in, they've accomplished skate tours throughout Ghana, occupy a Skate House where the collective has been able to gather & tourists have been able to visit, and are building the Freedom Skatepark in Accra with partners Daily Paper, Virgil Abloh, and others. The skatepark is 1350 square feet and also functions as a workspace and social hub to the creative youth in Ghana. Most importantly though, through the collective they've been able to cultivate a real community that lifts it's members up mentally, physically and financially and is pushing the future of Ghana forward.

Hussein Suleiman, Abderr Trabsini, and Jefferson Osei are the trio behind Daily Paper, the Amsterdam-born brand that started as a publication and became a movement of its own. With plans to make their US debut with a New York flagship store put on pause due to Covid-19 (4:23), they've had no choice but to up their e-commerce game considerably. Luckily that's something that comes natural to this crew — after all, Daily Paper started as a lifestyle blog before it became a full-on clothing label. It's something they're excited to return to with their UNITE hub (14:17), a place where they put everything from music playlists, staff profiles, and give a deeper look at the seasonal inspirations for each collection. It’s Friday, we’re a week into working from home, but some obligations have yet to settle into our routines. Fortunately, one of the things that have remained regular is our podcast lineup. Host Jian DeLeon is back this episode to introduce ‘Vibe Check’ to our Dropcast listeners. This week’s guest is Sandrine Charles, a consultant, publicist, and all-around communications expert who has worked with names like Noah, Aime Leon Dore, Kith, and Daily Paper. Sandrine shares some insight for maintaining steady productivity before an unpredictable future and the ever-present influence of e-commerce and retail therapy. Keep your eyes peeled and ears open for ‘The Dropcast’ which will be back on regular programming next week with a special pitchfest. In the meantime, make sure to catch up on the latest episodes of ‘Vibe Check’ where Jian checks in with guests from the Highsnobiety world to provide glimpses into their lives and how they’re adapting to the global coronavirus pandemic. For Sandrine, shopping doesn’t end with clothing — she’s setting aside time and money ($100 at Whole Foods) for fruits and vegetables and getting extra uses out of her Vitamix (7:26). Sandrine is aiming for comfort inside and out by eating healthy, waking up at five o’clock in alignment with her body clock, and dressing herself in presentable but cozy sweatpants. In between work and seven o’clock Zoom calls, she’s checking off her watch list and catching up on shows (9:51). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hosts Noah Thomas and Jian DeLeon are joined by Hussein Suleiman and Abderr Trabsini, co-founders of Amsterdam-based fashion brand Daily Paper. The partners blend their African and Dutch cultures to create heritage-infused streetwear pieces grounded in contemporary design. This episode’s quick hits start with highlighting why Pigalle is one of today’s most underrated collaborators (1:19), and why Supreme’s recent collabs with Velvet Underground and Ben Davis signal that the iconic brand might be losing some steam (4:45). The Daily Paper dudes also have some spicy #muleboyz takes when Hussein addresses Jian and Noah’s questionable taste in shoes (6:06). Though admittedly—most of that funny swag comes from Noah. The conversation takes a more serious turn in discussing B.STROY’s controversial collection featuring hoodies emblazoned with the names of schools where shootings have taken place (20:43). Jian and Noah were at the show last week and talked to the designers—and previous Dropcast guests—about why they chose to make such a polarizing statement on the runway, as well as fashion’s previous brushes with controversial matter. We close the episode by reminiscing about Daily Paper’s humble beginnings: starting out as a blog and using fashion as an educational platform (26:34) progresses into Hussein and Abderr sharing knowledge with Dropcast listeners, who left plenty of voicemails for the Question of the Week (QOTW): “What do you want to know about starting a brand?” (33:30) Drop by Highsnobiety’s Instagram on Monday for our next QOTW, and leave a voicemail on The Dropcast Hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode. ‘Til next time.
