New technologies have always led to changes in society, though not always as quickly or drastically as people feared. Could artificial intelligence be different? Instead of letting a new AI reality unfold amid helpless hand-wringing, what if we tried to learn from the past? In this talk recorded at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, a panel of thoughtful technology experts from various perspectives meet to discuss what might happen in a future AI-infused world. They explore the possibilities between immediate havoc and the eventual end of humanity, and suggest actions we can take to get the outcome we want. UK historian, writer and TV presenter David Olusoga joins UK government technology advisor Karen McLuskie and tech philanthropist Vilas Dhar of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. This conversation features an interview with Hilke Schellman, author of "The Algorithm: How AI Decides Who Gets Hired, Monitored, Promoted, Fired, and Why We Need to Fight Back Now." The host, Nola Simon, shares her personal experiences and concerns about AI in hiring processes, which led her to Schellmann's work. Key points discussed include: The increasing use of AI in hiring processes, especially for high-turnover positions. Potential biases and inaccuracies in AI hiring tools, such as: Favoring certain names or keywords unrelated to job performance Misinterpreting data and making incorrect inferences Potentially replicating existing workforce inequities Lack of transparency and oversight in AI hiring systems, with many companies unaware of how their tools actually make decisions. The need for thorough testing and scrutiny of AI hiring tools to ensure fairness and effectiveness. Concerns about how AI might disadvantage certain groups, including immigrants, non-native English speakers, and those with speech differences. The tension between efficiency in hiring processes and finding the most qualified candidates. The importance of accountability and responsible use of AI in hiring practices.   Key Questions Raised: - How accurate and fair are AI hiring tools really? - What data are these systems using to make decisions? - How can job seekers know if AI is being used to evaluate them? - Are companies doing enough due diligence on the AI tools they use? - How can we ensure AI doesn't perpetuate existing biases in hiring? Action Steps for Employers: 1. Thoroughly test any AI hiring tools before implementation 2. Regularly audit AI systems for biases and inaccuracies   3. Maintain human oversight and don't rely solely on AI rankings 4. Prioritize finding qualified candidates over speed of hiring 5. Be transparent with candidates about use of AI in hiring process Action Steps for Job Seekers: 1. Be aware that AI may be used to evaluate your application 2. Focus on clearly communicating relevant skills and experience 3. Consider how AI might interpret information on your resume 4. Prepare for potential AI-powered video interviews 5. Advocate for transparency in hiring processes Key Takeaways: - AI hiring tools often have hidden biases and flaws - More scrutiny and testing of these systems is urgently needed - Job seekers have little visibility into how they're being evaluated - Companies need to balance efficiency with fairness and accuracy - Human oversight remains crucial in hiring processes Hilke Schellmann, is an Emmy award winning investigative reporter and assistant professor of journalism at New York University. As a contributor to The Wall Street Journal and The Guardian, Schellmann writes about holding artificial intelligence (AI) accountable. In her book, The Algorithm: How AI Decides Who Gets Hired, Monitored, Promoted, and Fired, And Why We Need To Fight Back (Hachette), she investigates the rise of AI in the world of work. Drawing on exclusive information from whistleblowers, internal documents and real‑world tests, Schellmann discovers that many of the algorithms making high‑stakes decisions are biased, racist, and do more harm than good.  Her four part investigative podcast and print series on AI and hiring for MIT Technology Review was a finalist for a Webby Award. Her documentary Outlawed in Pakistan, which played at Sundance and aired on PBS FRONTLINE, was recognized with an Emmy, an Overseas Press Club, and a Cinema for Peace Award amongst others. In her investigation into student loans for VICE on HBO, she uncovered how a spigot of easy money from the federal government is driving up the cost of higher education in the U.S. and is even threatening the country's international competitiveness. The documentary was named a 2017 finalist for the Peabody Awards. A former Director of Video Journalism at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Schellman also spearheaded video coverage as a Multimedia Reporter for the New York section of The Wall Street Journal. Her work has appeared in several publications including The New York Times, VICE, HBO, PBS, TIME, ARD, ZDF, WNYC, National Geographic, The Guardian, Glamour, and The Atlantic.  Schellmann's work has been generously supported by the Patrick J. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I am joined by Vilas Dhar, president, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and a global expert on AI, equity, and how artificial intelligence is shaping our society. We sat down at the Aspen Ideas Festival in June to discuss whether AI is having a positive or negative impact on the workforce. Vilas Dhar calls the release of ChatGPT an important social moment, not a technological one. "AI didn't start in November of 2022. Researchers, scholars, people like me, have been building AI products for decades," says Dhar. "AI moved out of the background, out of the shadows, and became something that every person on the planet could touch, feel, interact with, see how it might influence their lives. And because of that, we entered into this new phase of a discussion that moved from 'What does the technology do?' to 'What do humans have to do to be ready for the technology? and "What kind of society do we want to build and how will AI help us get there?" He emphasizes the need for a diverse range of stakeholders, including technologists, policymakers, civil society, communities, employers, and workers, to be involved in shaping the future of AI and how any changes it brings are equitable ones. Dhar challenges the notion that AI will necessarily lead to job displacement, highlighting the potential for AI to enhance human capabilities and create new opportunities by automating mundane or dangerous tasks, freeing up time for creativity and innovation, and improving health care and community services. He calls for a shift in the narrative around AI from fear and risk to one of public investment and public ownership. "It's a moment in time where we can actually use it to force a bigger conversation about equality and equity, about how we distribute economic benefits, about the fact that if we think somebody is going to be displaced, what's the responsibility of the person who displaced them? "Note that I didn't say the machine that displaced them, but the person who made a choice to bring in a machine that displaced that worker. How do we think about creating a new social compact so that every person feels dignified and participatory in the decisions we're making about our AI future? If we were to start having those conversations, I'd be so hopeful about our future," he adds. Dhar has a lot more to say about why we need to change our thinking around artificial intelligence and how it can be a benefit to workers. You can listen in our conversation here, or get it wherever you get your podcasts. You can also find it on my Work in Progress YouTube channel. In this episode of Work in Progress, I am joined by Vilas Dhar, the president of The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, $1.5 billion philanthropy advancing AI and data solutions to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. Advances in artificial intelligence are moving faster than our ability to comprehend their implications. Will these technologies enable inclusion and access to opportunity for workers and communities, or will they increase inequity? Dhar sat down with me to discuss these questions earlier this month at the Changemaker Forum, part of the Global Inclusive Growth Summit in Washington, DC. Before we got deep into the conversation about how artificial intelligence, machine learning, and ChatGPT will ultimately change how we work and live, Dhar felt it was important to shift our perspective a bit. While AI does have the power to disrupt, there is a more fundamental issue we should be looking at, he says. "Before we think about what AI is, we have to center ourselves in the fact that we need to build a future where every person has dignity in their work. AI might come in and take some of the skills that are necessary to succeed in today's world and make them obsolete. "It may come in and create new pathways for humans to be productive, to be creative. If we don't start from a question of what's the dignified outcome we're solving for, it's too easy to get lost in the details." To get there, he says, we need to examine what it means to be a productive worker, someone who "finds a job where they both contribute and feel fulfilled, and then find something that so fundamentally transforms that." Says Dhar, "Now we face a moment where that abstraction is becoming real. AI could potentially transform every job on the planet." In this episode of Phishy Business, we take a look at AI. We talk on the fact that the stigma of AI running amok in Terminator-fashion is a myth we must dispel in the face of all the good AI can do in protecting the world - from cyberattacks to helping with climate change. We also talk about the other major challenges that AI can be used to solve globally in the next decade. Our special guests are Vilas S. Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, who was named a young global leader by the World Economic Forum, and our own AI data scientist Elaine Lee. Vilas originally trained as a computer scientist who worked on early AI, also went to law school, and then worked on rule of law in technology, finally moving on to build a few businesses in the private sector. Elaine uses her expertise as a data scientist to help create products that protect users against email cyberthreats and was recently promoted to manage a team of data scientists at Mimecast. In ‘Supercharging the AI Tortoise', we discuss: How optimism is essential to taking control of what we want AI systems to do. The sense of urgency that is needed in this work to protect people today and in the future. Why human oversight of AI systems is crucial to course correct and to remove biases in the algorithms. How diversity is fundamental in creating AI systems. The fact that more needs to be done in relation to how AI can be a force for good, from educating policy makers to more positive media coverage. How AI and data science can be used to created sustainable and scalable progress on the big issues our society faces, such as climate, poverty, and hunger.
