Yes We Care

Open Supply Hub is more than just a database; it's a movement towards a more ethical and sustainable future. Executive Director Natalie Grillon recounts her time in Uganda, working with an agricultural development company as part of a global fellowship with Acumen. This experience, coupled with her exposure to the aftermath of the heart-breaking Rana Plaza collapse, fueled her determination to make a change. She realized the powerlessness of consumers and farmers alike within the opaque supply chain and set out to empower them with the data they deserved.   Open Supply Hub is at the forefront of a revolution; its impact ranges from remedying worker's rights violations to facilitating collaborations that lead to better standards and reduced emissions.    > Transcript on website   RATE, WRITE, SUBSCRIBE Be sure to leave us a rating on Spotify or a review on Apple Podcasts!   Wicked problems require more than one line of thought — was there anything you agreed or disagreed with? “Seeing is no longer believing. You need to fortify the truth.” (Y.A.T.)   Generative AI, deepfakes… we've known the risks for a while, but the dangers feel ever closer given the amazing advancements of orgs like OpenAI. Meanwhile, human rights activists have faced these risks for years (think of doctored videos, misleading evidence, or the total absence of context).    Witness was ahead of its time by giving people tools to document human rights violations (departing from conventional notions of “acquiring data”) and prioritizing authenticity, personal security, and safety, particularly through its focus on human rights use cases. This issue of authenticity is a major one: Despite the ongoing challenge of combating weaponized misinformation and disinformation, organizations like Witness have been navigating all the complexities of trust - trusting the source, but also trusting those who are making the tools to document the truth, especially across cultural and social barriers.    Yvette is an advisor/consultant/board member, and previously Executive Director of Witness, with decades of experience leading org design and ecosystem thinking at the intersection of human rights, video, and technology. Huawei Ireland has launched the 2022 edition of its flagship talent programme ‘Seeds for the Future'. Third-level students studying STEM subjects at Irish universities or leaving certificate students considering a third-level course in STEM are eligible to apply. There is a €250K scholarship fund for the programme with the 50 top-performing students each receiving €5,000. The 2022 ‘Seeds for the Future' programme will be limited to 100 students with the course taking place on 24 – 31 October. Since its inception in 2015, over 170 students from Irish universities have benefitted from this unique learning and cultural experience. Students take a variety of basic and advanced courses covering the latest innovations in smart cities, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G, and the Internet of Things. Guest lectures on digital transformation, sustainable technology, and strategic leadership are delivered by Huawei senior engineers and industry thought-leaders. The 2022 programme will also see students take part in team exercises including Huawei's Tech4Good project, which challenges participants to examine how to leverage technology to address pressing social and environmental issues. To apply, students should send their CV, a transcript of their academic records, and an essay of 400 – 600 words or a 2-3 minute motivation video reflecting their interests and why they should be chosen to take part, to seedsireland@huawei.com. Students can also find out more information about the programme through the Seeds for the Future official website. The deadline for submissions is 10 October. Announcing the 2022 scholarship fund, Luke McDonnell, Senior Communications Manager, Huawei Ireland, said: “Despite all the current uncertainty and challenges, we're proud that we can deliver another €250,000 scholarship fund for the Ireland Seeds for the Future programme and that a further 50 students will benefit from a €5,000 bursary. Huawei is committed to creating value for the communities where we operate, and this scholarship fund will go some part of the way in helping students with the rising cost of living. It is important that we do whatever we can to help and nurture the youth of today because they will become the leaders of tomorrow and our future workforce. We will continue to invest in Ireland's future ICT workforce, and we see this scholarship programme as another way to help these students enhance their capabilities as they continue or indeed embark on their studies in STEM.” Students that secure a place on the 2022 programme will be given the unique opportunity to experience virtual tours of Huawei's campuses, the company's flagship store in central Shenzhen, alongside Chinese culture experiences like panda tours, tours of famous landmarks and insights into modern Chinese businesses. The scholarship was awarded in 2021 to the top 50 Seeds graduates from nine universities around the country, with the bulk hailing from TU Dublin, UCD, Trinity, UCC and NUIG. The awarding event was held at TU Dublin's Grangegorman campus, with speeches from Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Robert Troy TD, Huawei Ireland CEO Tony Yangxu and student representatives. When TechSoup was founded under the name CompuMentor, its goal was to provide nonprofits with tech volunteer services. Eventually, the mission expanded to providing donated software and hardware at highly discounted prices for nonprofits. While this was a major driver for its success, TechSoup found itself having to incorporate a new business model once software started moving to the cloud, where donated software no longer meant shipping out CDs or DVDs. Finally, we covered TechSoup's expansion of its network from local to international, becoming TechSoup Global as it is known today. And I think this is where funders, foundations can play a big role in it. That's step one, right? But step one is really not going to get you anywhere. You can put your stuff out there, but if other people aren't willing to use it or willing to do research and figure out what's there, that's also a big part of the ecosystem and a big part of the problem." Donald Lobo moved to the US from Mumbai in the early 1990s to pursue computer science, and  found himself on Yahoo's founding team. He is also the co-founder and lead developer of CiviCRM, which was set up to give the social sector free and open software. Having always had a keen interest in civil society, Lobo always found time to volunteer alongside his work, and very early on he began thinking about investing more and more of his time and his resources in causes close to his heart.
