The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the forty-nineth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Commanding General of United States Army Forces Command, General Andrew Poppas.   Forces Command is the largest United States Army command and provider of expeditionary, regionally engaged, campaign-capable land forces to combatant commanders. FORSCOM trains and prepares a combat ready, globally responsive total force in order to build and sustain readiness to meet combatant command requirements. The vision of Forces Command is to provide combat ready and globally responsive total Army forces that are well led, disciplined, trained, and expeditionary that will win in a complex world. Its organizations are expeditionary, campaign focused, and tailorable to provide combatant commanders the required capabilities to be decisive across the range of military operations. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Freedom” and the motto of “Freedom's Guardian.”   General Andrew Poppas is the 24th commander of United States Army Forces Command at Fort Liberty, N.C. A native of Wisconsin, General Poppas graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned in 1988. He spent most of his career within XVIII Airborne Corps as well as numerous years on the joint staff.   In this episode we discuss warfighting, building lethality, and combat readiness of our formations. Specifically, we look at how = adopting a “fight tonight” mindset while simultaneously keeping an eye towards modernization will enable us to win the next fight. Combat training centers are critical for building lethality into our formations; leaders develop critical skills as they work through the friction of simulated combat. An area that is incredibly difficult, but equally important for leaders is master, is shifting from focusing “down and in” to “up and out” to assist your higher headquarters as well as adjacent unit coordination.   GEN Poppas states that his predecessor, GEN Garrett, identified that a gap in the Army's preparations for large scale combat operations was preparing squads and platoons to win their first fight by getting back to the basics. He hopes that in his tenure the Army can collectively better prepare for transitions between phases of operations through staffs identifying multiple planning horizons. Battalions and brigades must become more predictable, synchronize operations across warfighting functions, and set the conditions for subordinate units to succeed.   Part of S01 “The Leader's Laboratory” series.   Don't forget to check-out FORSCOM's social media pages, their handles are ‘U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM)' on Facebook, ‘FORSCOM' on X, and ‘US Army FORSCOM' on Instagram.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. Hi Mommas and Poppas,   Who knows what a "gobstopper" is? They are delicious candies that have multiple layers of different colors and flavors. The exterior color might be purple, but under the purple layer is red, and under the red is green, etc.   This week's tool is how to recognize EMOTIONAL gobstoppers. For example, Anger generally overlies the deeper feeling of hurt. Because we often hate feeling hurt, we often instead react with Anger because Anger feels powerful and aggressive. You certainly can coach on the feeling of Anger and transition into another feeling, but that's not the root feeling and so Anger and other negative feelings will likely continue to pop up in other parts of your life. But if you can uncover the thoughts causing the deeper feeling of hurt, you can dissolve the anger and cure the underlying issue.   Ever had a week where you keep struggling with irritability, disappointment, annoyance, or anger? If you feel stuck in these emotions, consider that these patterns of emotions might actually be overlying deeper feelings and these deeper feelings are the root cause. Coach yourself on the root cause, and the negative emotion dissolves and you can unstick yourself. Click below to recognize emotional gobstoppers and know how to cure the root problem.     xoxo, Christina   PS. Looking for help coaching on your emotional gobstopper? I have >1200 physician coaching experience-- I can help!  Faculty-level women physicians considering joining my coaching program UplevelMD who haven't had a free mini session can request your free 30min mini session at https://www.yourpathinfocus.com/30-minute-1-1-request.   https://freemusicarchive.org/search?adv=1&music-filter-public-domain=1

Hi Mommas and Poppas,   Today's show is about a magic trick that I totally forgot to teach you about it! I use it as much or more than I use the model. I have taught my 1:1 private clients, but I realized today that I haven't taught my dearest podcast listeners yet. If you think you have heard it all, buckle up! This magic trick takes a bit of practice to perfect, but it can take you from LIVID to LIGHT in about 3 minutes. Wanna know the trick?   This episode will teach you to become The WATCHER of your brain. Instead of being in the middle of a hurricane of feelings and reacting to life, try this fix! You don't have to do ANYTHING. You simply zoom out of your life and watch your brain work. I liken it to putting my brain in the palm of my hand and watching it with as much love and curiosity as possible. Some people like the analogy of watching your brain, sort of like you are watching a movie at the theater.   The key is to get some distance from your brain so that you can see the model play out in real-time. The totally non-instinctual trick is that you have to NOT want to move forward at all. Instead, be willing to sit in all of it. Watch your brain from non-judgment. That's it. It sounds so crazy simple that you might not have ever considered this an option. This is the magic. Give it a try.   Want help becoming The Watcher in your own life? It does take a bit of practice, and having a guide is incredibly helpful. If you are a faculty-level woman physician who is considering joining my coaching program UplevelMD and haven't had a free mini session before, sign up for your free 30min mini session at https://www.yourpathinfocus.com/30-minute-1-1-request.   xoxo, Christina   https://freemusicarchive.org/search?adv=1&music-filter-public-domain=1

Hi Mommas and Poppas!   This is a very special episode for our 50th episode and my 44th Bday. In this show, you will learn how to Superwoman through any life challenge: applying for promotion, resigning a leadership position, gearing up for negotiations, moving, asking for a raise, hosting the in-laws, or preparing for a divorce hearing. The lesson is wrapped in an adventure at Sky Pond that involves all the usual dramatic elements of any great story: tears, a near death experience, adventure, a waterfall, a pregnant woman, and breath-taking views.   The punchline is that we sometimes will CHOOSE to do a challenging task. The trick is to know that you can do it scared while ugly crying and climbing up a waterfall. How? Take a moment right now while you are safe and well-fed in the comfort of your car or office, and develop your life motto. Remind yourself of your life motto as you prepare to do your new hard thing.   Here are some of my go-to life mottoes: I know how to do hard things; I never quit on myself; This is my perfect life adventure; I always figure it out.   Remember, you don't have to feel confident while doing hard things. I rarely do. Allow your life motto to help you tap into your commitment and courage. Will it feel amazing? Nope. It felt awful for me. And I did it anyway. So can you. Click below to access the drama and intrigue of how you too can Superwoman through ANYTHING!   Want help developing your life motto or preparing for your next hard thing? Dear Mommas and Poppas,   So many of my clients are struggling with fear right now: applying for a new job, starting a new position, letting go of an old position, buying a house, sending a kid to college, approaching the empty nest, declining a job offer, starting a business. If you've ever experienced fear, this episode is for you.   Ever been so afraid you think you might puke? I mean so aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafraid!?!?! Of course you have! We all have. All humans have fear-- except maybe psychopaths. Fear is a normal part of the human experience. The more you are willing to risk, the more fear you will have. It's just not possible to get through this life without fear. The problem is that most people let their fear keep them small, derail their dreams, and hold them back. There is another way!   This week I almost died 1,700 times! I was so scared to fail because I wanted the opportunity so much. What if I humiliate myself? What if I fail? What if I don't get the position? These thoughts were such a drag.   Then I thought, but what if I kill it!   So I did the task. I did it SCARED. Was it perfect? Heck no. But we can do hard things. It wasn't med-school hard.   Doing hard things while scared is the definition of courage. If it wasn't scary, we wouldn't need to be brave. We need fear. Fear keeps us safe and helps us grow to live extraordinary lives. Fear is amazing. Fear can come along for the ride-- it just can't drive the car. Spoiler alert: I did the thing and I didn't die afterward.   In life, you get good at what you do. If you hold yourself back because of fear,  you get good at being scared. If you don't let fear hold you back, you become FEARLESS. What could you do if you were fearless? Anything you want.   Like what you hear? I opened 3 free 30min mini-sessions to customize this podcast to your life. Requirements: you must be a faculty member considering Fall UplevelMD (my 8 week coaching program starting Sept 7, 2021), not have had a free mini-before, and respond by Aug 20, 2021. Hi Mommas and Poppas,   I am a terrible mom. Really.   Ever had this thought? It used to cause me so much pain. I thought I didn't work hard enough at work as my male colleagues with no kids (as if our work quality has anything to do with the number of hours we work). I thought I wasn't a good enough mom because I wasn't at all the school functions and didn't enjoy toddler parties. I thought something must be wrong with me since I don't LOOOOOOOOVE being a mom all of the time: I hated the newborn days, wasn't a fan of the toddler years, and I didn't do vomit clean up.   Everything changed the moment I realized that I am a 50-50 mom. I have raised fiercely independent kids (amazing!) and I also prefer Netflix over the toddler years (hot mess!).   About my thought that good moms love being around their kids all of the time?, I decided that was a lie.   Good moms loving being around their kids about 50% of the time. In this lightning (and wife-ening) episode, Phil & Jake are joined by Beth & Ali to rapid-fire rank karaoke, dippin’ sauce, landlines, the Golden Gate Bridge, bagels, goats, Cadbury Creme Eggs and carpets on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help choose which item on the List of Every Damn Thing should be re-ranked in an upcoming episode (you can vote once a day).If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter and Instagram).Check out the Little Anti-Racist Library project that Beth is working on.SHOW NOTES: We mention many of our favorite karaoke songs, including “Last Christmas” by Wham! (we don't cite it specifically, but Jake also likes George Michael’s “One More Try”), “Easy Lover” by Philip Bailey & Phil Collins, “Dream A Little Dream of Me” by The Mommas & the Poppas, “To Be With You” by Mr. Big, “Bernadette” by the Four Tops and “Blow the Whistle” by Too $hort. Dimples is a San Francisco treasure. If you like karaoke, overpriced drinks, open gambling, a weird sex-work vibe and possibly indoors cigarette-smoking, go there. Ali doesn’t mention the song “Last Resort” by name when she brings up Papa Roach in honor of Beth’s hometown of Stockton, CA. The band is actually from about sixty miles away in Vacaville, CA, but hey what’s the difference really? We mention “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, but not as an acceptable karaoke song. Also, “November Rain” by Guns ‘n’ Roses has way too much instrumentals to be a good karaoke song. Even the radio edit. Phil tells a story about a former student teaching him to mix hot sauce and butter, which is the recipe for buffalo wing sauce (usually made with Frank's Red Hot sauce). When Jake refers to Phil’s mom having a “Bucky Walter” in her home, he’s trying to use Boontling, the local dialect of the small town of Boonville, CA. It looks like he misuses the term, though, as a “Bucky Walter” is specifically a payphone (he should've said “Walter Levi”). “Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s” is a country song that Phil listens to when he goes to the hardware store. The paint color of the Golden Gate Bridge is neither golden nor red. It’s international orange. Here’s a brief video with some clips of the GG Bridge “singing” (as described in the episode by Jake and Ali). If you’re in Petaluma, CA and have a bagel-hankering, go to The Bagel Mill. The Marble Rye is the king of bagels. It's made by dividing the dough into two piles and mixing cocoa powder into one pile! Strange that it doesn't taste like chocolate. When Jake & Beth inexplicitly exclaim “Cram!” they’re referring to the comedy of Tony Baker. Googling teaches us that goats are, in fact, ungulates. We discuss the use of goats in religion. In Islam it's traditional at the end of Ramadan to slaughter a goat and donate it to the needy. Phil didn't know the word off the top of his head but it's Qurbani and it comes from a story about Abraham. In non-majority Muslim places there's not really a framework for donating and the needy aren't expecting goat meat.  The scapegoat is a different story from Hebrew tradition in which there were two goats and one was sacrificed while the other one was marked up to carry all of the sins and let go into the wilderness. We're not religious but it seems like the scapegoat got off easy (although it does carry the burden of guilt) which is the opposite of how we'd always understood the expression. RoPeCast has been all about speaking ever since it saw the light of day about 2 two years ago. Two-year-old children are different, of course, which is why mothers use baby talk to communicate with their toddlers instead of complicated Standard English. Now that our podcast has reached the toddler age, we thought it’s time to invite an expert to learn about so called child directed speech. In this first part of a small series, our guest Bobbye Pernice will tell you the difference between Poppas and Poppies and explain why sissys may drink from sippy cups. "Mooly Cow Rhyme" Here you can read the "Mooly Cow Rhyme" which was mentioned in the Episode. The original title is "The Cow-Boy's Song" and it was written by Anna Maria Wells. Choosing your Grandfather Name On this page you can find an almost endless number of variations on the traditional Grandpa, some evidently caused by childish mispronunciation, some perhaps derived from grandfather names in other languages.
