Rob King returns to the podcast. He is a professor of film and media studies at Columbia University's School of the Arts. He is the author of "Hokum! The Early Sound Slapstick Short and Depression-Era Mass Culture" (2017) and "The Fun Factory: The Keystone Film Company and the Emergence of Mass Culture" (2009). And now Rob has a new book "Man of Taste: The Erotic Cinema of Radley Metzger" (Columbia University Press, 2025). We are joined by novelist Cathy Brown who has some background behind the camera in the adult film industry. https://youtu.be/9kvinUaOKKk Radley Metzger was one of the foremost directors of adult film in America, with credits including softcore titles like "The Lickerish Quartet" and the hardcore classic "The Opening of Misty Beethoven". After getting his start making arthouse trailers for Janus Films, Metzger would go on to become among the most feted directors of the porno chic 'era of the 1970s, working under the pseudonym Henry Paris. In the process, he produced a body of work that exposed the porous boundaries separating art cinema from adult film, softcore from hardcore, and good taste from bad. Rob King uses Metzger's work to explore what taste means and how it works, tracing the evolution of the adult film industry and the changing frontiers of cultural acceptability. "Man of Taste" spans Metzger's entire life: his early years in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood, his attempt to bring arthouse aesthetics to adult film in the 1960s, his turn to pseudonymously directed hardcore movies in the 1970s, and his final years, which included making videos on homeopathic medicine. Metzger's career, King argues, sheds light on how the distinction between the erotic and the pornographic is drawn, and it offers an uncanny reflection of the ways American film culture transformed during these decades.

This week Baxie welcomes Roger Joseph Manning Jr. back to the podcast. Roger has not only written, toured, and/or recorded with the likes of Roger Waters, Beck, Adele, JayZ, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and many others--he was also one of the co-founders of the band Jellyfish. In the early 1990's Jellyfish released two albums that, while overlooked at the time, have become essential cult classics. This includes their sadly overlooked 1993 masterpiece "Spilt Milk". An album, which is not one my favorite albums of all time--I'll even go so far as to say it is one of the most astonishing power-pop albums ever recorded! (I'm dead serious). Over the last three years Roger has released 3 EP's with the band The Lickerish Quartet (with former Jellyfish touring members Eric Dover and Tim Smith), he reissued both of his previous solo albums ("Land of Pure Imagination" and "Catnip Dynamite"), he's also just released his latest EP "Radio Daze" on Omnivore Recordings. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Tim Smith (The Lickerish Quartet, Sheryl Crow, Umajets, Jellyfish, etc.). Ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash's Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—released their third and final child, Threesome Volume 3, May 20, 2022 on Stranger Danger Records and Tapes, distributed by Burnside and the Orchard in the U.S. and by Lojinx in the U.K. and Europe. It's available now on digital outlets and on the band's official website. Threesome Volume 3 makes its way into the world via remote writing, recording, and mixing. The challenges we've all faced these last years forced Roger, Eric and Tim to finalize this EP through a series of emails, and phone calls. Home recording studios were redesigned and outfitted to complete the final four songs that were originally written together in 2017. Threesome Volume 3 completes the trilogy started with the release of Threesome Volume 1 in 2020, which was called a “masterpiece” by many critics and fans alike. Threesome Volume 2 was released in early 2021, and its first single, “Snollygoster Goon,” showed another side of the band and its versatility as writers, singers and musicians. “Fortunately,” the EP's first single and video, is a bouncy tune sung by Tim Smith that drips with the signature harmonies and melodic structures The Lickerish Quartet have been known for, alongside a deeper, darker lyric that speaks to the universal ideas of heaven, hell, dogma and belief. As a co-write with their executive producer, Adam W. James, Eric's slide guitar soloing, Roger's keyboards and string arrangement, and Tim's melodic bass lines combine for the listener to perhaps harken back to early FM radio hits of the ‘70s. “New Days” was released as the second single and video on April 22. As sung by Roger, it's a tale of remembering the past with the longing psychedelic hope of the future. Eric's lyric touches pastoral images of optimistic youth and shaping moments with the desire to keep moving forward, onward, and probably westward. Lush reverb guitars, grooving bass and drums with evolving vocal harmonies celebrate the hope we all share for new beginnings. “You All Alone” starts with a jarring string ensemble as Eric's lead vocal then weaves a story of obsession and pursuit. Jagged drums and bass, razor wire guitars and another excellent string arrangement by Roger leads our hero towards satisfaction, but at what cost? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? “In The Meantime” rounds out the EP. Sung by Tim, the song ponders where do YOU go when you are feeling the crush of a world you no longer recognize? Topical, but also timeless, “In The Meantime” proffers to float rather than sink or swim. The theme of burying down deep is married to a pulsing, shouting wall of guitar sound and fury, but with a non-violent narrative. Those most precious things that bring us happiness--to love someone, do something, or have something to hope for--are sung about with fearlessness. They continue to engage with their fans via their website and “Experiences”--a series of collaborative connections of writing together with folks, performing on songs submitted to the band, personalized songs and messages, lessons in songwriting and production, as well as numerous Zoom-hosted breakdowns of their songs in-studio followed by a Q&A with the fans about the process, choices made, and equipment used to create their music. Meanwhile, Sony Japan recently partnered with them to release all three EPs on June 29, as a collection entitled Fables From Fearless Heights, which will include two previously unheard cover songs, as well as a special “best of” vinyl LP in that region. Sherry and Tim chat about The Lickerish Quartet's new EP and much more! Please visit thelickerishquartet.com for more information.

They're new ep, Threesome Vol. 3, concludes their "Masterpiece" series of fantastic eps. Roger shares stories from his long career, lots of business advice, shopping in Salt Lake City, and much more.    Two musical geniuses. Ongoing tensions between the members of the band would lead to constant delays in new material and the future of the band in limbo. Not one to sit around, Slash was moved to create new material on his own. With the go-ahead from label heads at Geffen Records, Slash started assembling a lineup of players and got right to work. Bringing in fellow Guns members Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, and Dizzy Reed as well as the bass talents of Alice in Chains member Mike Inez, he quickly got several songs written and demoed musically. With additional songwriting contributions from Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, the album is loaded with Guns n' Roses attitude and sound; albeit without Axl Rose on vocals. With lots of great music ready to go, Slash needed a singer. After auditioning over 40 others, the job went to former Jellyfish member Eric Dover. It was an unlikely hiring considering Eric was a backing vocalist with Jellyfish. But, after an impassioned audition and showing he had the songwriting chops to hang with him, Slash offered him the job. This week Eric Dover joins us to discuss Slash's Snakepit's 1995 release 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.' In 1995, Guns N' Roses were one of the biggest bands in the world; yet one of the most divided. We're hanging out with Roger Joseph Manning Jr. today at WASTOIDS. Maybe you know him from Jellyfish, Imperial Drag or the Lickerish Quartet, or from his long string of solo albums. Or maybe you've spotted his name in the credits of albums by Beck, Blink 182, HAIM, Jimmy Eat World, Lana Del Rey, Nate Ruess, The Format, and many, many more. 25 years ago, he and his musical partner Brian Kehew embarked on a truly strange journey into the musical technology of the past, which helped to kick off a synthesizer renaissance. We're talking about The Moog Cookbook, the duo he and Brian started, adopting the pseudonyms Meco Eno and Uli Nomi. They donned sci-fi-inspired cheeky astronaut gear—even before the French duo of Daft Punk got their own retro futuristic headgear and played cover versions of alternative rock standards that were dominating the radio airwaves at the time—bands like Green Day, Soundgarden, and Weezer, as well as classic rock songs by Van Halen, David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin, the Cookbook released two albums in 1996 and 1997, which caught the attention of Air, who invited the duo to collaborate, and Dave Grohl, who commissioned Cookbook-ified synth versions of Foo Fighters songs. Along with the  b-sides collection Bartell, these albums still resonate with warm, analog synth sounds. Part pastiche, part ironic send up, and part genuine, cross-genre/generation musical conversation, the Cookbook epitomized a certain strain of ‘90s pop culture that raided the past for inspiration and generated something that continues to buzz with a nostalgic glow. We caught up with Manning in his studio to learn more…

While the calendar confirms that 2020 was a standard 365 days, March seemed to last seven months, and in total the year seemed like one endless anxiety attack. Luckily, music still provided a momentary reprise via albums in a variety of forms. Some were unexpected, like from Hum, Shiner, Sparta, and Criteria. Some were long in the making, like albums from Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, and the Psychedelic Furs. Others were from active favorites, like The Lees of Memory, Guided By Voices, Local H, and Jeff Tweedy. There was something for everyone, and we talked about many.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Far Beyond by The Lees of Memory (from Moon Shot) 6:36 - Shameka by Fiona Apple (from Fetch The Bolt Cutters) 27:16 - Ghosts by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (from Letter To You) 34:32 - Step Into You by Hum (from Inlet) 48:33 - Lighthouse Spaceship by The Lickerish Quartet (from Threesome, Vol. 1 EP) 59:42 - Run Towards The Roar by Baby Chaos (from Apes Confronts Cosmos) Outro - The Solution is Laughable by Godzillionaire (from Negative Balance)   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. We discuss "Lighthouse Spaceship" by The Lickerish Quartet from Threesome, Vol. 1 (2020), "The Turnstile at Heaven's Gate" from Catnip Dynamite (2008), "Time to Time" by Malibu (a solo techno project) from Robo-Sapiens (2007), and listen to "Operator" from his solo Glamping EP (2018). Intro: "The King is Half-Undressed" by Jellyfish from Bellybutton (1990). For more, see thelickerishquartet.com and rogerarranging.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Like our Facebook page.
