This week on The Shiver Show, we plunge into one of the most haunting tales of duality ever written: Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Join hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn as they guide you through the chilling 1974 CBS Radio Mystery Theater adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novella—a radio drama that explores the terrifying conflict between good and evil in each human soul. This gripping episode was penned for radio by George Lowther, a prolific writer and director who masterfully condensed Stevenson's psychological thriller into a taut, atmospheric production that still resonates today. The story unfolds through the signature CBS Radio Mystery Theater format: brooding narration, moody orchestration, and immersive sound effects that echo the shadowy streets of Victorian London. At the heart of this production is a powerhouse performance by Kevin McCarthy as the conflicted Dr. Henry Jekyll and his monstrous alter ego, Edward Hyde. McCarthy's dynamic range—moving seamlessly from refined intellect to feral rage—anchors the drama and elevates the horror. Mary and Greg delve deep into what apparently inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write this story, and the themes of identity, repression, and moral ambiguity. Whether you're a longtime old time radio fan or you just love horror, this episode of The Shiver Show promises thrills, chills, and thoughtful reflection.
In this week's episode we talk about an AI that needs to go to therapy. It whines a lot for a robot that could fix everything, if only it could think creatively and also hadn't wiped out all of humanity. In the end it tortures a poor man for putting the rest of his party out of its misery. Now he is doomed to writhe around as a slug man with no mouth not knowing what time it is. It's not fair if you ask me.Our Links:Ian WolffeSend us a text
Intended for adult audiences. Strong language, sexual situations, substance abuse and lewd behavior. Viewer discretion is advised. Hardwire Heartache is the first work of the newly minted CMND/CTRL production team. This labor of love harkens back to the old school, "Radio Drama" style of entertainment that reached its peak in the 1930's and 40's. Written and performed by unpaid, amateur actors and producers, every sound effect and piece of ambience is created and recorded by hand in the old style. The story is a love letter to classic works such as blade runner, electric sheep, dragnet and Ruby - galactic gumshoe. Set in the year 2886, in a nearly lawless galaxy. The story follows a wannabe gumshoe Daniel Birx and his reporter friend Mikey, who get mixed up in the deadly world of illegal clones and murderous assassin Androids. Their travels take them through worlds that are as fantastical as they are absurd, with danger and wonder lurking around every corner.Cast members Raulus AND Taloc : Jordan Kyle FägerlieOfonov : ROBI BAILEY-MARSHAbira : Abby OrtizNarration : Neil Stevens Birx : K.T.UniverseMike: A MartinezWritten by: K.T.UniverseDirected by: A Martinez

Years ago, Case wrote a radio script that crossed over Superman with The Shadow. Now, he's gathered a host of actors to read it with full orchestration and foley! Overview In the Creative Collaboration and Script Reading meeting titled "The Shadow Meets Superman in The Searing Silhouette," hosted by Case Aiken and Jmike Folson, participants including Rachel Quirky Schenk, Geoff Moonen, Olivia Gilliatt, Ben Goldsmith, Peter Coleman, and Sarah Moonen engaged in a collaborative reading of the script. The meeting began with introductions and role assignments, followed by a two-part reading that introduced the characters of The Shadow and Superman, set against the backdrop of a major metropolitan law firm and a kidnapping plot. The discussion segment allowed participants to share feedback on the script, explore its historical context, and draw comparisons with other media crossovers. Additionally, tangential discussions covered related topics, such as pinball machines and potential sequels. The meeting concluded with a wrap-up where participants exchanged final thoughts and social media information, and Case Aiken outlined the action items, including editing the script for sound effects and encouraging ongoing conversations in a dedicated Discord server. Sir Richard Eyre, the renowned theatre and film director, who has served as a BBC Governor, shares his concerns over the cuts to radio drama programming, the broader challenges facing the BBC's cultural remit, the tensions between the BBC's public service mission and commercial pressures, and role of the BBC in nurturing and sustaining the UK's cultural landscape. "I would say the BBC is the most important cultural organisation in the world, and the Director-General of the BBC should be standing up, saying that, and putting his heart and soul and practical application into making sure that the BBC lived up to that proclamation. Well, they don't, and they've pitifully ignored the arts. They've cut the arts department in television, and now, they're cutting drama on in radio." The show The Scout is a Family Theater radio drama episode that aired on June 15, 1949. It features Eddie Bracken, Kathy O'Donnell, and Branch Rickey in pivotal roles. The story, introduced by Branch Rickey, revolves around baseball, a theme close to Rickey's heart due to his long association with the sport. He introduces the tale of Skip Welch, a character not famous in the big leagues or recorded in major league record books but regarded by Rickey as a true big-league player due to his integrity and character. The narrative unfolds in a small Midwestern town called Rawson, where Skip Welch, once an orphan and now a minor league baseball player, dedicates his time to coaching boys from the local orphanage. His story is one of ambition, moral dilemmas, and the harsh realities of professional sports. Despite his skill and passion, Skip faces challenges that test his values, particularly when he meets a mysterious scout promising him a future in the major leagues under stringent, morally ambiguous conditions. As Skip pursues his dream, he finds himself compromising the very principles he holds dear, leading to a climactic moment where he must choose between personal gain and the well-being of a young boy named Chuck from the orphanage.List of characters and their actors:Eddie Bracken as Skip Welch: A hopeful minor league baseball player and the protagonist of the story.Kathy O'Donnell as Mary Collins: Skip's love interest who helps him see the value in moral integrity over success at any cost.Branch Rickey as the Host/Narrator: Introduces the story and provides commentary on the moral of the story.A character known as the Scout: Represents the temptation of success at the expense of one's values.Chuck: A young boy from the orphanage who looks up to Skip and whose fate becomes intertwined with Skip's moral decisions. The story serves as a parable on the importance of playing hard but clean, emphasizing integrity over victory and the real meaning of success. It is an echo of Rickey's own beliefs about the role of sports in building character.

To get into the Halloween mood, grab a hot drink, dim the lights, and curl up in a cozy spot to listen to this new original radio drama. Matthew P. Woerner and our friends at Audioimagination77 Productions present a spine-tingling story in the tradition of the classic audio drama of the golden age of radio. Don't be surprised if the story sounds a bit familiar. It was inspired by an urban legend most of us know, and probably told during a sleepover or around a campfire in our younger days. The Caller was written, produced, and directed by Matthew P. Woerner, and stars Logan Woerner as Jill Harlow, Annie DiMartino as Mrs. Miller, Craig Hart as Detective Daniels, Jonathan Cooke as Sergeant Burke, Liv Johansson as Paget, and Matthew Woerner as Dr. Miller and The Caller. ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. At a time when we're debating where policing is going, we're going to tell you where the police came from. Guided by Peabody award-winning host Chenjerai Kumanyika, Empire City will provide the first accessible narrative history of the American police and its place in popular culture. Who are the police? And why were police departments created in the first place? To find answers, we're going to tell the origin story of the largest police force in the world: The NYPD. We begin in the late 1800's at a moment when the entire police force was on trial. It's the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the NYPD, and it all plays out like a high stakes courtroom drama. What follows is the action-packed account of how the NYPD got to this point and what happened next. It involves Black abolitionists fighting slave patrols in the courts of Gotham; two rival police forces duking it out for power at City Hall; the origins of the true crime genre; and how the NYPD spread their tactics worldwide.Listen to Empire City wherever you get your podcasts: Wondery.fm/Empire_City.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
