George and Kathy Lutz moved into 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, in December 1975, roughly one year after its previous residents were shot and killed in their sleep. They fled less than a month later, leaving behind their belongings and claiming to have been terrorized by demonic forces. This story served as the basis for Jay Anson's 1977 book, which itself spawned nine follow-ups, more than 60 films, and countless parodies and homages. A half a century later, what's it like to revisit the non-fiction (?) book that started it all? The Losers' Club finds that out in the latest episode of their Danse Macabre series, in which they discuss the books and movies recommended by King in his 1981 horror treatise of the same name. Losers Jenn Adams, Randall Colburn, Ashley Casseday, and Ana Marie Cox unpack the disputations, lawsuits, and defenses that color the book's history, as well as whether you can ever read a story as it was originally intended after its been fed through the pop cultural gristmill.

Stephen King's The Pop of King EW Column: 2003-2004

Stephen King and Entertainment Weekly go back a long ways. The pair's relationship began with a handful of grouchy letters to the editor in which King excoriated the magazine's film critics. Kin's barbed words, however, only motivated the outlet to recruit the author — after he reviewed a Harry Potter book for them, the editors asked him if he'd want to like his own monthly column. In July of 2003, the Pop of King, a full page of King's pop cultural musings, debuted. In June 2023, The Losers' Club was initially going to discuss the column in one fell swoop in their Patreon-exclusive Archives series. However, after reading through the first year and change, they discovered there's too much brilliance, too many bad takes, and too much pure bile to not spread this out a bit.  In this episode, Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, and Dan Caffrey travel back to 2003 and 2004, using King's comically acerbic reviews, recommendations, and takedowns to discuss how that era of culture resonates two decades on.  Topics include horror (obviously), poptimism, The Passion of the Christ, baby boomers, gradeflation, movie quotes, death, pet peeves, and Mystic River (the man would not stop with Mystic fuckin' River). And this is just the beginning. Want more? After taking a quick (and bleak) detour with the macabre Revival, Stephen King returned to the characters he introduced in 2014's Mr. Mercedes with 2015's Finders Keepers. The second in a trilogy of novels about aging detective Bill Hodges, Finders Keepers follows a young boy whose discovery of a trunk filled with cash (and moleskin notebooks) puts him in the crosshairs of a psychopathic bookworm.  In this episode of The Losers' Club, hosts Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Rachel Reeves, and Ashley Casseday slip on their pocket protectors and duct-taped specs to discuss King's return to the obsessed fan archetype. One night as the Losers were asleep in the clubhouse they share in Derry, Maine, a mysterious knock came at the door. Upon opening it, they discovered not a person, but a bundle of decaying, handwritten pages. After transcribing them by candlelight, the Losers realized they were reading the teleplay for the lost first episode of Season 3 of Hulu's Castle Rock. Naturally, your humble hosts sought to bring the script to life in the best way they know how: By turning it into a podcast with no affiliation whatsoever to Hulu or the creators. Today, The Losers' Club is proud to present the first of the audio drama's three acts, which begin with the arrivals of a Dark Man, a beleaguered detective, a fire-spewing vigilante, a psychic drifter, and horror's most famous vintage automobile. It's a story as engrossing as it is asinine, and littered with more Easter eggs than you can count on, well, 19 hands. Stream the first episode now and stay tuned for Act II and Act III to follow in the coming weeks. Rest assured, all three acts will be stitched together as one long episode come August.Production by Cat Blackard. Edited by Kyle Orozovich. Happy New Year, listeners! We’re breaking in 2015 with 15 Minutes – a poorly-timed, mediocre cop thriller from 2001 starring Robert De Niro and Edward Burns. The two play a homicide and arson cop, respectively, who have to track down two crazy Eastern Europeans who commit a series of serial murders in order to cater to the Jerry Springer-heavy nature of American notoriety and fame. The movie tries to juggle Michael Mann-esque high-octane cop action with Network-like satire of media, but becomes a bit too pulpy and conservative to make it work. Still, we (along with guests – and old friends – Todd Kuhns and Meredith Sladek) dig into the myriad problems of this interesting failure, along with our custom cocktail and drinking game*! We had an awesome year in 2014, from contributing to another book, having at least another 25,000 downloads, getting awesome guests like Nathan Rabin of The Dissolve and Justin Gerber and Randall Colburn of Consequence of Sound, and more. Thanks so much for everyone who’s been listening and supporting us, and we plan on making 2015 better than ever! *If you want to see pictures of the boozy Russian-inspired pastrami on rye Clint made for the recording session, be sure to check out our Instagram page!

HELL-o listeners! Justin Gerber and Randall Colburn of Consequence of Sound joins us as we continue our spooky look at the third part of different horror series with The Omen 3: The Final Conflict! This time, baby boy Antichrist Damien Thorn is all growed up (and played by a smirking Sam Neill), in a position of political power, and all set to cement his rule over mankind by preventing the birth of the Nazarene. Standing in his way, of course, are a cabal of comically clumsy clergy, Damien’s dunce of a dame, and his terrifically tepid toady, all of whom try (and confusedly fail) to take down the Antichrist, with little margin for TERROR! Check it out along with our custom cocktail and drinking game!
