Trans women should use toilets according to their biological sex, according to the equalities minister Bridget Phillipson, this is in response to the UK Supreme Court's ruling a week ago on the legal definition of a woman. The Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed the decision, saying it provides much needed clarity, and his office has confirmed that the Prime Minister no longer believes trans women are women. There have been protests against the decision, with critics saying it is incredibly worrying for the trans community. The ruling followed a long-running legal battle between the Scottish Government and the campaign group For Women Scotland. Susan Smith, one of the directors, gives her reflections on the outcome, a week on. The historian Tiffany Watt Smith traces the evolution and messy realities of female friendship across the past century in her new book Bad Friend. Tiffany talks to Clare about bad friends through history: the romantic school girls of the 1900s; office gossips; mum cliques; angry activists; and the coven – women who choose to live together in old age – to the present day. The former lioness Eni Aluko had a hugely successful career as a player making over 100 appearances for England. Since then she's gone on to have an equally successful career as a pundit, becoming the first woman to appear on Match of the Day in 2014. Earlier this month her name was in the headlines following the outcome of a civil court hearing involving the ex-footballer Joey Barton. In the first stage of a High Court libel case the Judge found that online posts made by Joey Barton about Eni and her family were "defamatory". Mr Barton is yet to respond, and can appeal, or defend the statements if the case proceeds to trial. In a separate criminal case involving both parties Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to allegedly posting offensive comments on social media. An Army of Women is a documentary that follows a group of women in Austin, Texas who took on the legal systems that they feel let their rapists walk free – specifically by filing lawsuits against the police department in Austin and the district attorney's office in Travis County, which prosecutes cases for the county. Those suits were settled in 2021 and 2022. The documentary debuted at the South by Southwest Festival last year, and is being released here in the UK from this Friday. Clare speaks to documentary director Julie Lunde Lillesæter and Hanna Senko, who was the lead plaintiff in one of those lawsuits.Presented by Clare McDonnell Producer: Louise Corley

It's easy to feel defeated in the face of political challenges, but this episode shows that everyone has the capacity to create positive change and contribute to a culture of peace in their communities. In her book "Peace by Peace: Risking Public Action, Creating Social Change," Lisa Silvestri shows how ordinary people addressed issues in their communities form the West Bank to Baltimore. Silvestri found those stories through a process she calls "crowdsourcing hope" and found that deliberately seeking out peace led her to discover more and more of it. The book is grounded in the Ancient Greek virtue phronesis, which Silvestri explains in the interview. We also discuss how not all social action needs to be political — and why it might be better if it's not. After the interview, Cyanne Loyle and Candis Watts Smith discuss the power of using what frustrates you as an impetus for change, and how finding common cause can be more effective at reducing polarization than finding common ground.Silvestri is an associate teaching professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State. She likes to think, write, and speak about war, peace, politics, social justice, digital culture, democracy and civic life. She has contributed to outlets including The Washington Post andThe New York Times and has spoken at The 92nd Street Y and The South by Southwest Festival.Lisa Silvestri's websitePeace by Peace classroom guide

When a package mysteriously explodes on the front porch of a suburban home in Northeast Austin, killing homeowner and father Anthony Stephan House, authorities are mystified. Bombings of this type are incredibly rare and law enforcement has – at best – flimsy theories about motives and suspects. This darkly strange incident fades from the headlines as the annual South by Southwest Festival ramps up. On March 2, 2018, an anonymous and deadly package bomb detonated on the doorstep of a home in Austin, Texas. Then, another was discovered, and another. Each one a little more sophisticated than the last, and each target seemingly more and more random, igniting confusion and fear across the city. With just days before hundreds of thousands of people would arrive for the South by Southwest Festival, and no leads, the city's bomb squad faced a challenge unlike anything else in their department's history. This is the thrilling, true story of the 19 days of terror that settled over one of the fastest growing cities in the world at one of its busiest times told by the law enforcement, victims, journalists, and residents who witnessed it. Jade spent the first few years of her career performing as a classical concert pianist. Following an artistic epiphany, she pivoted from playing the piano to impress audiences, to using the piano as the vehicle by which to provide the inspiration, information and entertainment that profoundly moves them instead. The results have been, well darn impressive. No stranger to pushing boundaries to see bold results, this concert pianist turned world changer is brought in by the likes of corporations like Mass Mutual, Royal Bank of Canada, DOW, Raytheon, the Hershey Company, Genentech, Valic, Pfizer and Nationwide to redefine purpose, inspire seismic shifts in mindset and activate audiences to go out and instantly start living more consequential lives of impact. The one-of-a-kind artist has built a one-of-a-kind career garnering diverse recognition from unlikely places. She's played renowned halls, including the hallowed ones of the White House and the US Supreme Court and her genre-bending concert adventures that span Rachmaninoff to Rap attract diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds. For her work on and away from the stage, Essence magazine featured Jade alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama as a part of their "Style & Substance List". As one of the rare classical artists invited to perform at the taste-making South by Southwest Festival, her show was ultimately branded one of the "Best of SXSW 2014". She's starred in a Broadway-style musical called Lillette's Rhythm Club and she can be heard portraying Nina Simone's classical years in the Oscar-nominated documentary What Happened Miss Simone? In her inimitable career as a concert pianist and as a media host, Jade has remained committed to expanding the boundaries of Classical music and its presentation.

The South by Southwest Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Every year, thousands of fans arrive in downtown Austin, TX to partake in a couple of weeks of great music, technology, and film. For this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we take you along for our annual deep dive into the heart of the film festival portion, and even further into the films themselves. Over the course of several days, the 2021 SXSW Film Festival screened over numerous features, many from first-time filmmakers (consisting of World Premieres, North American Premieres, and US Premieres), shorts, virtual reality exhibits, title design, and other works. These films were selected from thousands of overall submissions, and – while we can’t see them all – we have a nice sample to share with you of what came out of this stellar lineup of independent films. Over 30 films are on our docket this year, and we review them all. So sit back and relax. You’re about to experience South by Southwest from the comfort of your own home. Find a full list of the films reviewed on this episode here: https://www.thehollywoodoutsider.com/sxsw-2021-films-south-by-southwest/
On this episode of Establishing Your Empire I host Joah Spearman. Joah is the CEO and Founder of Localeur who has helped more than 5 million people experience traveling like a local from insiders who share authentic recommendations on their favorite local places to eat, drink and play. Joah started Localeur in 2013 by asking a dozen friends in Austin to recommend their favorite local spots before the South by Southwest Festival. Joah’s path has been anything but straight. His career started by working for the Texas Longhorns while in college, then a speechwriter in D.C. His first business was a social media consulting company helping to turn Austin’s Rainey Street into a nightlife district. After that, he opened a sneaker boutique in Downtown Austin, underneath the mayor’s office at City Hall. Then he convinced the founders of SXSW to let him create and run the first-ever fashion part of the festival. Somehow, the combination of all these experiences gave Joah a unique perspective on what a traveler really wants when they visit a new city: authentic recs from locals. Now, some 180 cities later, it seems to all make sense.

Next, Mary Harris discovers that taste cells don’t just live on tongues. What do these cells get up to in the rest of the human body? Find out in this feature from our show, In Good Taste.
