The Fool On The Hill": Man Of The 1000 Voices.

Martin Quibell joins this week as we discuss the recent "fan mixed" Underdubbed version of "Red Rose Speedway". Sorry Paul, the term still is not going to catch on among the general public. This mix is probably more accurately referred to as an "Elements" or (to borrow a term from the Lennon camp), a "stripped" mix - it is not something that ever existed for Paul, or that he used to make decisions on future directions, but it *is* a reflection of the stages these songs passed through.
Montreal singer and songwriter Max Comeau returns to talk with host Paul Romanuk about Side Two of 1973's Paul McCartney & Wings album Red Rose Speedway. Also talk about Max's latest album, a collection of jazz-influenced McCartney covers called Play McCartney.

He's pretty thorough on there, with lots of notes and factoids about many of the songs as well as lyrics.-here is a Rolling Stone magazine review from 1973 on Red Rose Speedway. It's generally quite favourable.-an interesting discussion on the album on the excellent Steve Hoffman Music Forum-here's a link to the obit that ran in The Guardian on Wings guitarist Henry McCullough.
With his episode we start our four part theme on what the solo members of the Beatles were doing 50 years ago in 1973. We start with Paul McCartney and Wings and their album "Red Rose Speedway", the second album Paul made with Wings.

How much 'Red Rose Speedway' is too much Red Rose Speedway? It's the age old question. Paul wanted it to be a 2-LP set. EMI said, “no”. And, with that, Macca's recording career was effectively over. So today we'll look at Julian Lennon's 1989 hit, “Mr. Jordan”! [BUZZER SFX] No! It's actually Part Three of our 17-part deep dish full-on-sausage-patty salute to Wings' 2nd album, which sadly does not feature “Thank You Girl”. THANKS FOR NADA, DAVE DEXTER. This week, we look at Paul's original 2-LP iteration of this title, which finally surfaced as a limited vinyl set in 2018. Is it an improvement on the single (pigeon) album we've known for 50 years? Tony & T.J. select the best of the best of tracks left off the original Red-and/or-Blue Rose Speedway, and along the way they ponder:
In episode 389 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo speak with Denny Seiwell, who played drums on the RAM album and became the first drummer for Wings (1971-3). Hey Weepers! Hey Creepers! Hey Hugga Me Righters! Whether dragonfly or pigeon, we think you're gonna dig part 2 of our Red Rose Speedway deep dish even more than George Leroy Chickashea loves "Ebony and Ivory" (solo version). Along the way, they take a (Cleveland) Brown Line L train around the Loup, and also discuss:
1973 was a banner year for classic rock LPs. But from "Houses Of The Holy" to "Goats Head Soup", only one album that year rocked the loudest, hottest, and wettest: "Red Rose Speedway". Ok fine, it's not really a "rock" album. It might not even roll. But that doesn't prevent it from being an inventive and quintessentially Paul (uh, oh yeah, "and Wings") album. On its 50th anniversary, the UBP Living Un-Single pigeons extoll its many charms, in another patented, cliffhanger-laden multi-parter. #HyphenFest In Part 1 (read: "eye", obviously), they also consider:

Our first ever panel at the Fest coincided with the 50th Anniversary release of Red Rose Speedway. We didn't get a whole lot of time for this one but we enjoyed the live in person aspect, energy and fielded a few questions from the audience. We discussed a lot in 30 minutes. Our ratings on tracks, the proposed double LP, songs that could've gone on it etc. This was recorded on Sunday 2nd April at the NY/NJ Fest. Thank you to ALL who came to our panel and to Susan Ryan for scheduling us this year! Keep Getting On The Right Thing!

Welcome to the Drum Channel west coast broadcast with Billy Amendola and Don Lombardi. This episode features long-time friend and former Paul McCartney and Wings drummer Denny Seiwell. Denny talks to Billy & Don about his New York audition with Paul & Linda and his recording of McCartney's classic album RAM. Before he knew it, Seiwell was invited to join McCartney's new project, Wings, where he toured and played on the albums Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway, as well as singles such as “Hi, Hi, Hi,” and more. Never one to slow down, now at the young age of 79, in 2015, Alfred Music published his drum instructional book, What Not to Play! and you can still catch Seiwell performing with his jazz trio, his rock band, or a young group of friends paying tribute to the 50th anniversary of the ex-Beatles RAM ON project, co-produced by Fernando Perdomo. Let's listen! Thank you to west coast Drum Channel, Thomas Lang, and the Westlake staff. Audio edited by Butch Jones at the east coast DC studios.

The 4th episode of our mini series "Ranking The Tracks" where we rank the songs on the second Wings LP Red Rose Speedway.
Paul McCartney & Wings return with what was originally designed to be a double album, but paired back during editing. Was this the right choice? We also discuss the outtakes and singles from this period, plus Percy Thrillington's Twitter account, Bruce McMouse and Paul's "granny music". We then tackle one of the greatest Wings songs ever, 'Little Lamb Dragonfly', with lead vocals shared between Jack & Jess.

It’s July of 1973 and two former Beatles are at the tops of both the album and singles charts in America. As Paul’s Red Rose Speedway and Live and Let Die duked it out with George’s Living in the Material World and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth), John Lennon is once again back in the studio working on his long-awaited solo follow-up to 1971’s Imagine LP. While Some Time In New York City may have, at one point, seemed like the bold new direction for John and Yoko, the couple’s troubled marriage and recent critical disappointments lead each to retreat to their own respective studio albums for a more polished, if more expected, set of creative efforts. While recording new music may have once again proved to be a healthy outlet for John’s frustrations, time in the studio was beginning to feel like hard work for the former Beatle, whose immigration troubles and mounting personal and professional hardships were taking an increasingly critical toll. McCartney, meanwhile, was enjoying the encore leg of his wildly successful Wings UK Tour - at last beginning to taste the levels of success he had once enjoyed as a Beatle. Toward the tail end of July, the triumphant Wings returned to the studio to begin sessions for a new album, but Paul’s lucky streak was about to run out... Hot on the heels of their successful new album Red Rose Speedway and monster worldwide hit My Love, Paul McCartney and Wings were ready to take the stage, at long last, in the United Kingdom. This would be Paul’s first such tour of his home country since 1966, the year The Beatles stopped touring. Unlike the Wings University Tour a year prior, the band was now taking the stage in planned concert events in some of the same locations graced by the fab four in their heyday, and McCartney’s rocking new ensemble did not disappoint. From raucous rockers like Soily, Big Barn Bed, The Mess and their soon-to-be-smash single Live And Let Die, to the epic ballads Paul had become so known for since those aforementioned Beatle days, Wings travelled the country and dominated each stop. Manchester, Bristol, Oxford, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, London’s legendary Hammersmith Odeon -- this was a rock and roll band at their peak. While Wings took the country by storm, George Harrison was busy putting the final touches on his upcoming LP, his first full length record of new material since 1970’s mammoth All Things Must Pass. With Paul finally achieving the critical and commercial success that eluded his early solo works, would George (the critical and commercial darling up to this point) have the goods to go toe to toe with the Macca machine? 1972 was the first year in his career that Paul McCartney didn’t put out an album. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t busy: Wings became a live band with tours in the U.K. and Europe; they released a scattering of stand-alone singles; and they worked towards the release of Red Rose Speedway, the second Wings album, which came out in 1973. There’s so much more to explore: the single album that blossoms as a double album, the contractual obligation tv special, the live film they tried to suppress (due to cartoon mice). Live on tape from Dublin, it’s Nothing Is Real. Follow us on Twitter: @BeatlesPod Facebook Group: http://tiny.cc/NIRFBG See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Paul McCartney and Wings needed a hit. With their debut LP Wild Life and subsequent scattershot singles not setting the world on fire, the band that had to learn on the run found themselves on shaky ground. Enter Red Rose Speedway - a slick, polished record with punchy pop potential and a mammoth lead-off single in the sweeping McCartney ballad My Love. While the musical merit of Macca’s latest batch of material may be up for debate, neither lover nor hater could deny its power-pop charm and staying power on the charts. Form the rocking Big Barn Bed, to RAM-era highlights like Get on the Right Thing, to the medley reminiscent of Paul’s efforts on Abbey Road, Wings was at last taking to the sky and proving to a skeptical public what they were truly made of. As McCartney and company prepared to tour the record in their first major foray into Britain, another Apple release entered the charts in the form of George Harrison’s catchy and sweet Give Me Love single. George’s plea for peace was a long-awaited return for Harrison, whose forthcoming album Living in the Material World stood poised to do battle with Red Rose Speedway on the charts... Dearly beloved followers - 2Legs would like to welcome you back to another chat of all things McCartney. Tom and Dave kick things off in a joyful mood with their Record Store Day 2019 Experiences as well as looking back on how it started for them (coincidentally it began the same year). Just as we previously discussed the Archive Deluxe Box Set Review of Wings' Wild Life from Episode 9 of season 3 - the team is back to talk about the 2018 co-release; The Deluxe Edition of the Wings' Red Rose Speedway (the 12th edition set of the on-going Archive Series). In the same sort of style as the last set, Tom and Dave do their best to give the listener their impressions of presentation, content, value, as well as some overall critiques. Hard to believe it took 9 years to have this particular set released but it finally arrived and we believe its one of the best Archive Sets Released. Tom and Dave are pretty much on the same page for this box set and in general of the series (which is entering its 10th calendar year). Like what you hear? Email us at 2legspodcast@gmail.com or follow our Facebook page (2Legs: A Paul McCartney Podcast) or check us out on Twitter (@2Legspodcast). Also, catch 2Leg Tom on another wonderful show called Talk More Talk: A Beatles Solo Videocast. (just google the title of the show and you'll see their social media presence on the various streaming outlets) Tom's dream came true working with a fantastic team we have admired for so long and you actually get to see his mug on all episodes. Good luck trying to get 2Leg Dave to do that - sorry folks that's never happening. He'll just stay behind the curtain and do his best producing the 2Legs shows.
Pat welcomes Gwyn Ashley back to the Co-Host chair to discuss the discography of Paul McCartney's other band... Wings! Former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber also stops by to discuss his time with the band.

Red Rose Speedway disc three and the paper goods from Wings Wild Life. Singles, demos, rough mixes, "Jazz Street" and three separate versions of "1882." More on the Big Barn Box. This week: A look at Disc 2 from both the Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway discs. For the former, we get alternate mixes of each of the eight tracks. For the latter, we get one of the proposed two-disc versions of "Red Rose Speedway" (also available on vinyl as "RRS Reconstructed"). All-in-all a quite different listening experience when compared to the single disc we have been listening to for all these years.

Continuing with the "Big Barn Box", this week we travel through "Red Rose Speedway", and discuss the album in both its previous and remastered incarnations. Along the way we get some vintage audio from Casey and AT40. Will "My Love" top the charts for a second week in 1973? Which George Harrison song was nipping at the Wings? Tune in and find out, and also hear some vintage comments from Denny and Denny talking about Glyn Johns and the making of the album.
Our first episode of 2019 is a review of the streaming version (2 disc) of Paul's Red Rose Speedway remaster and bonus tracks. In 1972-73, Wings is making progress, and their second album is a considerable improvement over their first. Originally planned as a double LP, Red Rose Speedway is a modest hit and yields a number one single, “My Love.” As with Ram, however, the leftovers are as interesting as the album itself. Ryan and Chris provide a guided tour of the Red Rose Speedway that never was. Listen in and get on the right thing. An error regarding the attribution of the saxophone solo on "Leave It" is corrected in Episode 12 Tug of War. The solo is played by Tony Coe, not Paul McCartney.Click here for the Episode 5 song list.Email us: takeitawaypodcast@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
