'I had seen dozens of people die horrible deaths ... This time was different. This time it was a friend of mine dying in the dirt in front of me, and it was my job to save him.' Dan Pronk is the author of three bestselling books, a regular keynote speaker, and the resident medic on the hit TV Show, SAS Australia. After failing dismally in his first career dream of being a professional triathlete, he studied medicine on an army scholarship. Upon qualifying as a doctor, he passed the SASR selection course and served five years in Special Operations, including four tours of Afghanistan with 100+ combat missions.  Learn more about Dan Pronk During his years with Army Special Operations, Dan Pronk had the unique opportunity to treat dozens of gunshot wounds. In his memoir, Pronk describes the highs and lows of his military-medical career, with the real toll they took on his mental health and family life. He writes about the burden of saving - and failing to save - friends and comrades, the feelings of helplessness and despair that haunted me, and the journey back to a meaningful and fulfilling civilian life. This memoir is a tribute to the doctors, medics, and first responders working behind the scenes in conflict around the world. While I amputated one man's thigh, there lay at one time thirteen, all beseeching to be taken next… It was a strange thing to feel my clothes stiff with blood, and my arms powerless with the exertion of using the knife.” – Charles Bell, Surgeon at the Battle of Waterloo, 1815. Hippocrates said that ‘war is the only proper school for surgeons' and, throughout history, we have become experts at battlefield medicine. From swords and spears to ballistic missiles and machine guns, the destructive power of our weapons has increased exponentially, but so has our ability to manage injuries and save lives that extend beyond the battlefield. Our special guest is Dr Dan Pronk who is a qualified General Practitioner, completed Australian SAS selection and worked with Special Forces in the Army where he served five years including four tours of Afghanistan and awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Services. Through their work with The Resilience Shield, Ben and Tim have become fascinated with the topic – and in particular, with evidence-based research related to it.  A few months back, they saw an article talking about an Australian academic conducting a range of ground-breaking research into this exact topic and reached out to see if she would be interested in sharing her perspectives with the Unforgiving60.  Associate Professor Justine Gatt is Lead Scientist of the Gatt Wellbeing & Resilience Group at Neuroscience Research Australia and the School of Psychology, UNSW. Rocketing rates of physical and mental health issues are a testimony to the immense pressures of our complex modern world - and then you throw in a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and restrictions on movement. So how do we become strong and adaptable to face life's challenges?  Three Australian SAS veterans reveal their groundbreaking resilience techniques to master your mindset and overcome adversity. They've culminated their findings into a book ‘The Resilience Shield'. Dr Dan Pronk, Ben Pronk DSC and Tim Curtis are Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) veterans with MBAs. They have over 60 years combined experience in leading high-performance teams. We talk about what is resilience and unpack the six elements that help to strengthen your resilience shield. In particular we dive into Mind and the role of creativity and spirituality, and wrestle with the concept of Adaptability - which for me truthfully I like the idea of, but the reality of having to constantly adapt to environment can just down right suck at times - maybe you agree?
Dan, Ben and Tim currently work to support clients in improving their capabilities at the intersection of leadership, teamwork, resilience and crisis management.  Dr Dan Pronk is involved with the top-rating SAS AUSTRALIA on Channel 7 and will have an extensive on-camera role in the 2021 series.   This was a great conversation with super practical tools on how to understand and strengthen your resilience in the face of whatever life brings you. Enjoy this conversation with Dan Pronk, Ben Pronk and Tim Curtis.

UPCOMING EVENT: If you'd like to attend a Q&A session in November with Combat Story's Ryan Fugit, please fill out this form (https://tinyurl.com/552ewmu5). Today we hear the second round of our Combat Story with Dan Pronk, a former Australian SAS officer and medical doctor who completed four tours to Afghanistan. In round one we covered Dan's first calling as a triathlete until he found himself in medical school, and, eventually, SAS selection. We covered some of his initial deployments. In round two we move into the more difficult deployments Dan faced when things started getting darker, as they so often do. We also discuss Dan's newly released book - Resilience Shield - which takes SAS resilience lessons and applies them to everyday life to thrive, much as Dan has. Dan went on to found a multi-million dollar company - TACMED - and has written two other books: Arterial Tourniquets and Average 70kg D**khead. Dan is the most unassuming doctor you'll ever find and I hope you enjoy this second round interview Down Under as much as I did. Today we hear the Combat Story of Dr. Dan Pronk, a former Australian SAS doctor who completed four tours to Afghanistan. Do not be fooled by the doctor title, Dan was on the front lines conducting hundreds of operations with the elite SAS. This is the first of two interviews with Dan. Before the military, Dan was a triathlete and lived what he described as an average Australian upbringing. The military put him through medical school, but he wanted to be part of the elite SAS and fought for years for a chance to just get to selection, which he eventually did. Since leaving the military, Dan has gone on to an executive role in medical management, as well as co-owning the multimillion dollar company TacMed Australia and founding several other entrepreneurial startups. He's written several books, including Average 70kg Dickhead: Motivational Lessons from an Ex-Army Special Forces Doctor, and Arterial Tourniquets: For Police Officers, Law Enforcement and other First-Responders. He just released a third book with two fellow former SAS operators called Resilience Shield. Dan's also a motorhead with a love of high performance cars, leading him to own a classic Ferrari and Lamborghini. He also created Delta Automotive that builds these limited edition classic sports cars. Dan was referred to me by another SAS leader as “legend” in the community and I hope you enjoy this first of two Combat Story rounds with Dan as much as I did. Tom started out as an army combat paramedic doing some fascinating work in Afghanistan, then later worked in the jungles of Papua New Guinea before becoming a full-time firefighter which he does alongside his work with DRA. Today, we're joined by two fellow veterans and legendary brothers, Ben and Dan Pronk, who along with their close friend Tim Curtis just published (and already sold out) their first brilliant book, The Resilience Shield. All three were elite soldiers in the SAS which is already impressive enough but later went on to complete their MBAs launching successful post-military careers AND the brothers now fondly refer to themselves as two thirds of an author setting today's warm, self-deprecating tone. I already gush about Resilience Shield enough in this episode, but whether you're interested in the military or not, it is a transformative handbook for our crazy times. Aiming to help us build a shield of resilience against the undeniable uncertainty and unfairness of the world, high adrenaline military anecdotes are weaved seamlessly in among dense philosophy, science and research from around the world about timely themes like fulfilment, loss and rebuilding of identity, trauma, modern information overload and goal setting. No size 12 font storytelling, Resilience Shield is packed full of a methodology built over three stellar careers to date but with endearing relatable language like one of my favourite chapters, But what about my dickhead boss? Dan, his brother Ben and veteran, Tim Curtis, have just released their book, ‘The Resilience Shield' - A mix of enthralling stories and practical instructions breaking down methods we can all use to build genuine resilience. Dan thrived in the most extreme high stress environments and found the rampant intensity of battle so enticing that he felt he had to keep going back for more.  When he was in the thick of it, witnessing all the death and destruction destruction seemed like water off a ducks back, but Dan's trauma was building all along till it finally caught up with him.  Dan is a prime example of post traumatic growth, the positive flip side of post traumatic stress we don't often hear about.  Very few of us have survived the worst of the worst like Dan has, but we all faces challenges in our lives with the potential to break us and we all need a Resilience Shield.
