A multifaceted talent known for his work as a book writer, composer, and lyricist, Justin Levine delves deep into the creative process behind his works, particularly "The Outsiders" musical adaptation. He draws parallels between his work on that production and his involvement with "Moulin Rouge." He also discusses the balance of honoring the original source material while also infusing the adaptation with a fresh perspective and vision. He shares how the team encourages each other to contribute ideas beyond their traditional roles, emphasizing the collaborative nature of musical theater and describing the process as a relay race. Justin challenges stereotypes about musical theater, arguing that it's a misunderstood art form with deep cultural significance. He highlights the influence of musicals on popular music and culture – as proven when he was asked by Anna Wintour to do the music for the Met Gala to celebrate Broadway coming back. With long credits under his name, he still encourages people to prioritize personal well-being, maintain meaningful relationships, and pursue work that aligns with one's passions above anything else. Justin Levine is a theater book writer, lyricist, music supervisor, and orchestral arranger with Broadway credits that include “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”, “Moulin Rouge!”, and “Here Lies Love”. His additional credits include creating original music for Shakespeare in the Park's “A Midsummer Night's Dream”, arranging vocals for Vevo x Lorde - Melodrama, music directing “Love's Labour's Lost”, music directing “The Robber Bridegroom” at the Roundabout Theatre, and music directing “Murder Ballad” at MTC and Union Square Theatre. He is now the co-book writer, co-lyricist, music supervisor, and orchestral arranger for Broadway's “The Outsiders”. A 1958 graduate of Brown University, he began his professional career as a lyric writer under contract to the late Frank Loesser. He made his Broadway debut in 1968 with Here's Where I Belong, which ran for one night. He had better luck with The Robber Bridegroom in 1976, which won him his first Tony nomination. He followed that with five recreated musicals at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut. His first play was Driving Miss Daisy, which began life at the 74-seat upstairs theatre at Playwrights Horizons in 1987 and went on to run for three years and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. The film version, starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1989 and gained Uhry his own Oscar for Best Screenplay. His next two Broadway outings won him Tony Awards: The Last Night of Ballyhoo (Best Play of 1997) and Parade (Best Book of a Musical 1999). Bostwick has also had considerable success in musical theatre, winning a Tony Award for his role in The Robber Bridegroom.Universal Studios Hollywood is adding a Fast and the Furious roller coaster to its theme park. The coaster is going to have a drift effect like the cars in the movie do Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie tells Games Radar that he almost used de-aging technology to make Tom Cruise appear younger at the beginning of the film. "Originally, there had been a whole sequence at the beginning of the movie that was going to take place in 1989, We talked about it as a cold open, we talked about it as flashbacks in the movie, we looked at de-aging. One of the big things about [the de-aging] I was looking at while researching, I kept saying, 'Boy, this de-aging is really good' or 'This de-aging is not so good.' Never did I find myself actually following the story. I was so distracted by an actor that I had known for however long was now suddenly this young person.”The Daily Star says Hugh Grant is under fire for playing an Oompa Loompa in the new Willy Wonka film. Little People actors are furious that he was cast as a little person. Former WWE wrestling star Hornswoggle says, “Don't get me started on the forthcoming Willy Wonka movie. In Mel Stuart's 1971 version, he cast 10 dwarfs to play the Oompa Loompas. In Tim Burton's 2005 remake, the role went to 4ft 4in Gurdeep Roy, who was digitally cloned. So why has the role now gone to 5ft 11in Hugh Grant? People need to see real dwarf actors in blockbuster fantasy movies.”The Daily Mail says Jennifer Garner is taking boxing classes in Los Angeles to prepare for her role as Elektra in ''Deadpool 3''.Tom Holland says getting sober has been one of the best things he's done in his life. Entertainment Tonight quotes him as saying, “I didn't one day wake up and say I'm giving up drinking. I just, like many Brits had, had a very, very boozy December, Christmas time I was on vacation, I was drinking a lot, and I've always been able to drink a lot. I think I get my genes from my mum's side in that thing, not I can, I can drink. And I decided to just give up for January. I just wanted to do dry January and all I could think about was having a drink. That's all I could think about. I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock, when's at 12pm? And it just really scared me. I just was like, wow. Maybe. Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing. So I sort of decided to punish myself and say, I'll do February as well. I'll do two months off. If I can do two months off, then I can prove to myself that I don't have a problem. Two months go by and I was still really struggling. I felt like I couldn't be social. I felt like I couldn't go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn't go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling and I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”The Daily Mail says Tom Cruise wants to star in a movie with Margot Robbie. A source tells the newspaper, 'He's got his eyes on his next project and wants Margot to be his leading lady. Tom and Margot made 'tentative plans' to meet up and discuss the project when they return to Los Angeles,

BROADWAY NATION

2022 marks the 5Oth Anniversary of one of the most popular musicals in the history of Broadway – GREASE.  My guests on this episode are two of the many stars that emerged from the original Broadway and touring productions of that long running, record breaking show – Barry Bostwick & Marilu Henner. Marilu Henner's association with Grease goes back to the very beginning when as a teenager she created the role of “Marty” in the original Chicago production of the show. A few years later she played the role again in the First National Tour and then eventually on Broadway. Her other appearances in Broadway include the plays and musicals, Over Here!, Chicago, The Tale Of The Allergists Wife, and she starred in the National Tour of Annie Get Your Gun in 2000. She is of course best known for her role on the hit TV series Taxi, as well as her many other film and television appearances. Barry Bostwick created the role of “Danny Zuko” in the original Broadway production of GREASE for which he received a Tony nomination. He has appeared in seven Broadway plays and musicals including his Tony Award winning performance in The Robber Bridegroom. He has starred in dozens of film and television productions including the mini-series George Washington, the hit sitcom Spin City, and as “Brad Majors” in the cult classic the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both Marilu and Barry have contributed anecdotes and memories to a new book that was released just last week, entitled Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. In this delightful conversation Marilu shares impromptu performances of songs that never made it out of the Chicago production, and tells us why she turned down her initial offer to be in the show in New York. You will also hear about the wild times and amorous adventures that a dynamic young cast of future stars got up to on tour, as well as the immense contribution of Grease's choreographer Pat Birch, the infamous tight pants that Barry thinks helped win him a Tony Award, and much, much more. Combined across the Emmys, Grammys, Olivier and Tony Awards, Patt LuPone has 14 nominations and six wins. Her resume includes 27 Broadway credits, including Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of Evita (1st Tony Award), Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Noises Off, Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy (2nd Tony Award), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, War Paint, Working, Oliver!, The Robber Bridegroom, and The Beggar's Opera. In London she starred in the original casts of Les Misérables, The Cradle Will Rock, Sunset Boulevard, and the West End revival of Company. She also has a long and illustrious career across TV and film, with credits including Driving Miss Daisy, Frasier, Will and Grace, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Glee, American Horror Story, Girls, Penny Dreadful, and of course, Life Goes On. She's a voiceover artist, a cabaret performer, a mom, and performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, all of which mean you can find her singing across 22 different albums. Patti LuPone was the first American to ever win an Olivier Award, has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, and can now be seen on Broadway in the revival of Company.  LuPone recalls her first introduction to the musical Gypsy (playing Louise) in high school, speaking candidly about not understanding the play at the time, and shares how she was initially banned from participating in any of Arthur Laurents work before going on to win a Tony Award for playing Rose. She reflects on going to the “dark side” a lot when COVID shut the industry down, noting it wasn't that she couldn't perform but rather that she had nothing to fill that void with, and shares how close-knit and supportive the cast and crew of Company is as a result of the collective trauma and uncertainty they faced together once they resumed rehearsals. LuPone also speaks about the importance of doing her work completely in the rehearsal room, allowing her and the audience to both play and relax once she is onstage, and shares why she looks at the audience every single night.  In this episode, we talk about:  Being in one of the first-ever students in Juilliard's school of drama in the 70's  Her Maryilyn Monroe impression at 3 years old  What it is about laughter from an audience that brings her joy  What she calls the “Italian blast”, and not having a filter  Her “Andrew Lloyd Webber memorial pool” Resenting producers or anybody that underestimates the audience's intelligence Connect with Patti: Twitter: @pattilupone IG: @pattilupone Web: pattilupone.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Meet our friend, Bryan Roach. Bryan is an incredibly talented musician, singer, songwriter, creative & friend. In this episode he shares his background story from musicals to a record deal to burnout and a 10 year music writing hiatus. This is a story of how many creatives struggle, those of us with perfectionist tendencies have to learn to let go, and the power of having safe allies with whom we can safely bounce our ideas. What is extraordinary about Bryan's story is the redemptive power of faith. Letting go of control, trusting God, and experiencing spiritual growth led to a restoration of things once thought lost. Sarah and Will played witness to and are champions of a revitalization in Bryan's creative life. What would possibly make Halloween of 2021 more GRIM than a special episode all about the Brothers Grimm? Nothing! That's why I did it! This is what you'll get in this episode: A brand new Celluloid Catacombs with Carolyn Mauricette, this time she's talking all about the 2005 confusion fest of a film starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. This edition of The Celluloid Catacombs is brought to you by Wicked Cat Clothing, the world's finest horror, halloween and paranoral themed clothiers. Next, we'll take a brief look at the history of the Brothers Grimm, then the stories. Oh, the stories. We're going to talk about a few of the Grimm stories, with commentary by the author of the Webworld Trilogy and San Diego-based filmmaker, Ben Johnson. Ben's going to tell the basic stories, as he remembers them and I'll come in and fill in the GORY details. Finally, I'll read the full gloriously ghoulish tale “The Robber Bridegroom”. Body parts, wicked murderers and talking birds. Perfect for Halloween! Music of the episode by Murder By Death with their rendition of the Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs classic “Little Red Riding Hood”, plus Austrailian punk rockers Bodyjar with the song “Fairytales”. Peoria Theatre People

*Content note: Today on Peoria Theatre People, Sarah and Lisa discuss some of Lisa's early roles in shows like The King and I. As white people, Lisa and Sarah are both committed to aiming for better representation for people of color in theatre and working toward being more inclusive. Peoria theatre needs to make an effort to be welcoming to people of color. Now, Sarah and Lisa absolutely value roles being appropriately cast in shows such as The King and I.*Lisa White is no stranger to the Peoria theatre scene. She has experience in early childhood education and is a "teacher at heart" (in her own words), but does theatre as much as she can. Peoria theatre will miss her as she and her husband just moved out of state! Audiences in Peoria have seen Lisa in roles like Ren's mom in Footloose and have seen her directing work with shows like 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, [Title of Show] and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (she directed Sarah in this). Peoria audiences have also seen her costume work in shows like Big Fish, The Robber Bridegroom, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She's done a little bit of everything, basically! Today on Peoria Theatre People, Lisa and Sarah discuss why she costumes her own shows, her wonderful husband Kurt, how the pandemic has affected theatre, Metamora Thespian Society, discuss her love of doing a show at the tent in the heat, her time as a hip hop dancer, and why her auditions as a director always include improv. Thanks for listening to Peoria Theatre People!
