Three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone shocked the theater world with a series of incendiary remarks in an interview with the New Yorker. Some of LuPone's fans have responded with ambivalence, saying they love her work, even if they don't love... her. So how should art consumers consider the creator of the art? Where should the line be drawn? Is there a difference between consuming art created by a deceased artists, versus a living artist? Our guests discuss it: Mona Seghatoleslami, music director, host, and producer for WXXI Classical 91.5 FM, and music coordinator for the Little Cafe Matt Passantino, film critic for CITY Magazine Thomas Warfield, director of dance at RIT and inaugural professor of practice at NTID

Join Matt and me for Episode 128—our final bow in the Sondheim series—as we dive into Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall (1993).It's Broadway's best doing what they do best: belting, emoting, and worshipping at the altar of Sondheim. We're talking LuPone, Peters, Buckley, Minnelli—more divas than dressing rooms. It's grand. It's over-the-top. It's Sondheim with a full orchestra and zero chill. And yes, it was filmed—bless the archival gods.Watch it before we talk—we've got thoughts, feels, and at least three standing ovations.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ConnerandSmith

It's Kevin and Lauren this week and they talk Agatha All Along, Blink Twice, The Penguin, The Uglies, Happy Death Day, and The Roommate. The show kicks off classy with Lauren taking us to Broadway again. She talks about the new Mia Farrow and patty Lupone play, The Roommate. It's a great story of two women, late in their lives and with very different experiences, coming together to form a special bond. Definitely gives soem Grace and Frankie vibes. Kevin uses his excellent skills for transition to move the topic to Agatha All Along, using Patty Lupone as the bridge. Disney+ dropped the first two episodes at once so it was a great starting off point. The new show uses what Wandavision started, but quickly begins moving in it's own direction, showing Agatha's journey out from under Wanda's spell. Next, Lauren takes us to the movies with the new thriller, Blink Twice, starring Channing Tatum. It's a solid mind bender and the directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz. The film deserves it's trigger warning, as it's a take on the Jeffrey Epstein saga. It's a great new turn for Tatum's career and well worth the watch, if you can handle the subject matter. In an even less artful transition than the first one, Kevin uses Zoe Kravitz to segue to The Penguin on HBO. It stars Colin Ferrell, reprising his role from The Batman. This series gives him the opportunity to flesh out the character in a way that the movie couldn't. Ferrell does an amazing job disappearing into this character, as does the shockingly good (bad?) Cristin Milliotti. This one is going to be a solid watch. Like last week, Lauren's final contribution of the episode is a bit of a roast. She caugh The Uglies on Netflix and it's... not good. This one is getting wrecked on Rotten Tomatoes and Lauren struggled to find a reason to recommend it. At least she watched it so you don't have to! Kevin closes out the show with a bit of a flashback with the Happy Death Day movies. They'd always been on his spooky movie watch list, so he took the chance to jump in this season. They are more comedy slasher than horror, but they are fantastic movies! Jessica Rothe is fantastic and these movies belong on everyone's Halloween watch list! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture
Actress and singer Patti LuPone has left an indelible mark on the world of theater. Known for her breakthrough roles in musicals such as Evita and Les Misérables, and for collaborating with the likes of David Mamet and Stephen Sondheim, LuPone has equally stunned audiences with her voice and acting chops. With a new show on Broadway, The Roommate costarring Mia Farrow, and a role in the new Marvel series Agatha All Along, she speaks with Dan about her early days in a traveling theater group, whether or not she's seen a ghost in a haunted theater, what she learned from Mamet, and much more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Patti LuPone has been a mainstay on Broadway for half a century. She's appeared in some 30 Broadway productions and has won three Tony Awards for her roles in “Evita,” “Gypsy,” and “Company.” And somehow, LuPone's career seems to be picking up steam in its sixth decade. Now LuPone is returning to Broadway in “The Roommate,” a play she's starring in alongside Mia Farrow. At the same time, she is débuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing a witch in the miniseries “Agatha All Along.” The staff writer Michael Schulman first wrote about LuPone (in one strange, forgotten dead end of her career) in 2019, and recently spoke with LuPone at her home. Is it true, he wanted to know, that LuPone recently had Aubrey Plaza—her castmate on “Agatha”—for a short-term roommate? Plaza had been offered her first role in a play, as LuPone relates it, and “she'd never been onstage. I know from years of experience how it can shock you, what is required of you to be a stage actor.” LuPone, the veteran, “was concerned for her. I said, Why don't you just stay with me and let me walk you through this as you come home like a deer caught in the headlights. … I did do her laundry, and I did make her soup.”
Originally aired as episode 200 on April 5, 2022. With a remarkable 14 nominations and six wins across the Emmys, Grammys, Olivier, and Tony Awards, Patti LuPone is a force in the entertainment industry. Her illustrious career includes 27 Broadway credits, most notably her Tony Award-winning roles as Eva Perón in Evita and Rose in the 2008 revival of Gypsy. Other significant Broadway appearances include Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Noises Off, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, War Paint, Working, Oliver!, The Robber Bridegroom, and The Beggar's Opera. LuPone has also made her mark on the London stage, originating roles in Les Misérables, The Cradle Will Rock, Sunset Boulevard, and starring in the West End revival of Company. Beyond the stage, her extensive career in television and film includes performances in Driving Miss Daisy, Frasier, Will & Grace, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Glee, American Horror Story, Girls, Penny Dreadful, and Life Goes On. A versatile performer, LuPone has also lent her talents to voiceover work, cabaret performances, and regular appearances with the New York Philharmonic, contributing to 22 albums. She is the first American to win an Olivier Award and has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Currently, she stars in the Broadway revival of Company. In this episode, LuPone reflects on her introduction to Gypsy, recalling her role as Louise in high school, and shares the story of how she was once banned from working on any of Arthur Laurents' projects before ultimately winning a Tony Award for her portrayal of Rose. She opens up about the challenges she faced during the COVID-19 shutdown, discussing how the lack of purpose impacted her deeply. She also highlights the strong sense of camaraderie and support among the cast and crew of Company, forged through their shared experiences during the pandemic. LuPone delves into her rehearsal process, explaining why she completes all her preparation in the rehearsal room so that she and the audience can enjoy the spontaneity and energy of live performance. Additionally, she reveals why she makes it a point to look at the audience every night. In this episode, we discuss: Being one of the first students in Juilliard's School of Drama in the 1970s Her Marilyn Monroe impression at three years old The joy she finds in eliciting laughter from an audience The “Italian blast” and her unapologetic lack of a filter The infamous “Andrew Lloyd Webber memorial pool” Her frustration with producers who underestimate the intelligence of their audience Connect with Patti: Twitter: @pattilupone IG: @pattilupone Web: pattilupone.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Learn more about your ad choices. Combined across the Emmys, Grammys, Olivier and Tony Awards, Patt LuPone has 14 nominations and six wins. Her resume includes 27 Broadway credits, including Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of Evita (1st Tony Award), Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Noises Off, Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy (2nd Tony Award), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, War Paint, Working, Oliver!, The Robber Bridegroom, and The Beggar's Opera. In London she starred in the original casts of Les Misérables, The Cradle Will Rock, Sunset Boulevard, and the West End revival of Company. She also has a long and illustrious career across TV and film, with credits including Driving Miss Daisy, Frasier, Will and Grace, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Glee, American Horror Story, Girls, Penny Dreadful, and of course, Life Goes On. She's a voiceover artist, a cabaret performer, a mom, and performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, all of which mean you can find her singing across 22 different albums. Patti LuPone was the first American to ever win an Olivier Award, has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, and can now be seen on Broadway in the revival of Company. LuPone recalls her first introduction to the musical Gypsy (playing Louise) in high school, speaking candidly about not understanding the play at the time, and shares how she was initially banned from participating in any of Arthur Laurents work before going on to win a Tony Award for playing Rose. She reflects on going to the “dark side” a lot when COVID shut the industry down, noting it wasn't that she couldn't perform but rather that she had nothing to fill that void with, and shares how close-knit and supportive the cast and crew of Company is as a result of the collective trauma and uncertainty they faced together once they resumed rehearsals. LuPone also speaks about the importance of doing her work completely in the rehearsal room, allowing her and the audience to both play and relax once she is onstage, and shares why she looks at the audience every single night. In this episode, we talk about: Being in one of the first-ever students in Juilliard's school of drama in the 70's Her Maryilyn Monroe impression at 3 years old What it is about laughter from an audience that brings her joy What she calls the “Italian blast”, and not having a filter Her “Andrew Lloyd Webber memorial pool” Resenting producers or anybody that underestimates the audience's intelligence Connect with Patti: Twitter: @pattilupone IG: @pattilupone Web: pattilupone.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. "Singular Sensation: The Triumph of Broadway," by Michael Riedel covers the Broadway theater in the 1990s, a decade during which theater, once New York-centric, became part of mainstream popular culture. The book tells the gripping behind-the-scenes stories of such celebrated shows as "Lion King," "Rent," "Angels in America," "Chicago," "Sunset Blvd" and "The Producers." For this book, scheduled for release Nov. 10th, Riedel conducted new interviews with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Glenn Close, Idina Menzel, Hugh Jackman, Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Mel Brooks, Michael Eisner, Liam Neeson, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench. "Singular Sensation" begins with the saga of "Sunset Boulevard," at the time the most expensive show in Broadway history. It looked like a hit, until it collapsed amidst Lloyd Webber's feuds with LuPone, Close, and Faye Dunaway. Upon learning that she was going to be replaced in the leading role by Close, LuPone screamed: "Glenn Close? She brays like a donkey and her nickname is George Washington because if you look at her in profile, her nose meets her chin." Jonathan Larson wrote the brilliant "Rent," but never lived to see it open. After a dress rehearsal, he returned to his walk-up apartment, put on the tea kettle, and dropped dead of an aneurysm. Riedel writes movingly of Larson's struggle to write the "Rent," and how, after his death, it influenced a generation of musical theater writers and performers. Disney almost pulled the plug on "The Lion King," unable to understand how an audience would respond to director Julie Taymor's ground-breaking puppets. Taymor hastily put together a special workshop just for Michael Eisner. He looked at her work and said, "The bigger the risk, the bigger the payoff." "The Lion King" went on to gross nearly $9 billion, making it the most lucrative entertainment property of all time. "Singular Sensation" ends with the story of how Mel Brooks turned "The Producers," an obscure movie from the 1960s, into a Broadway blockbuster. But just a few months after it opened, terrorists knocked down the World Trade Center. Broadway was facing an existential crisis. But in just two days, its shows were up and running, a signal to the world that terrorism would never bring New York to its knees. "Singular Sensation" charts Broadway's dramatic comeback after 9/11. Broadway is now facing another existential crisis. It has been dark since March due to COVID-19. Riedel, who has covered the theater since 1989, can talk about the challenges Broadway faces and whether it can stage yet another comeback. The Broadway columnist for the NY Post, Riedel is also co-host for "Len Berman and Michael Riedel In the Morning" on New York's 710 WOR. Riedel co-hosted "Theatre Talk" on PBS-TV for 25 years.

Our first official BROADWAY Diva of the season. We couldn't start with anyone other than the brassy and magnificent, Patti LuPone! With a vast career encompassing stage, screen and everything in between Ms LuPone is one of our most outspoken Divas. Never one to shy away from giving her opinion or standing up for what's right she has cemented her Divaship a billion times over. We couldn't have done this deep dive without our fabulous Co-Diva and ‘Patti Aficionado' Leasa Mann, so grab a bevvy and settle in as we take a peek behind the curtain of the original EVITA herself, Ms Patti LuPone!
Alright divas, this week Allen interviews current Las Vegas teacher and former costume designer to the stars, Joe Kennedy (@josephak13) and we talk about the Queen of Pop herself: Madonna! Get ready, because Joe is an expert, and has been since his mom played "Papa Don't Preach" on repeat while she was pregnant with him. A diva of divas, she has 300 million records sold, $1.2 billion in concert sales, and she's even banned from Hamilton. Can you even?? Joe reminds us to watch Madonna: Truth of Dare, the behind the scenes documentary of the Blond Ambition Tour. She took risks putting queer culture front and center. She was the first person banned from MTV because of it. And excommunicated from the Catholic Church! JP2 was not having it. Madonna is a beautiful contradiction in her music videos of being saintly and slutty. We love to see it. And never forget she went to U Mich on a dance scholarship. Step ball changed her way to the top! Joe then dives deep into her international influences and asks her to be a bit more thoughtful in her artistic choices. Is it appropriation or is it appreciation? Finally, Joe defends Madge's acting - she's got a limited range but isn't dead behind the eyes, okay, Lupone!? Lastly, Joe thanks Madonna for all she's done for the community. Patti LuPone’s been busy. Between starring in the new Ryan Murphy Netflix show Hollywood, performing in Zoom concerts, giving no-holds-barred interviews in her signature outspoken fashion and giving us regular video updates from her basement, there’s no question that 2020 – coronavirus be damned— has already been Patti LuPone’s year. But to many of us, EVERY year is Patti’s year. My love for the legendary diva spans decades of seeing her perform in countless shows and settings, including an evening almost 10 years ago when I got to see her sing at a Barnes and Noble in New York City to promote her deliciously honest memoir. Watching LuPone in that intimate setting solidified my love and admiration for this woman and was an evening I’ll never forget (partly because I was also seated right next to the late, great Zoe Caldwell— but that’s a story for another day.) So you can imagine how thrilled and honored I was to get a chance to talk to her briefly in the midst of her busy quarantine schedule. Patti filled me in on the challenges of trying to stay productive while stuck at home, chatted about the current state of the arts in general and theatre in particular, filled me in on how she prepared to play a female studio executive in 1947 Hollywood, and, yes, gave me some insight into those basement videos that have turned her into a full-blown Twitter legend.
Tony winner Patti LuPone is the special #LiveatFive: Home Edition guest celebrating Broadway.com's 20th anniversary with Paul Wontorek, Beth Stevens and Caitlin Moynihan! Starring in both the Broadway revival of COMPANY and Ryan Murphy's HOLLYWOOD on Netflix, LuPone has over 25 Broadway credits and two Tony Awards to her name. Follow her on social at @PattiLuPone!

Sam Maher is one of the most passionate, dedicated, informed consumers of theatre in New York. His website, YesBroadway.com, is designed to help you sort through the noise that’s prevalent on other sites — it’s quality, not quantity, of articles & features that matter. Two of the website’s biggest sections — “saw it, loved it” and “hype alert” — focus on Sam’s personal favorites, and the upcoming shows with the most buzz. And he would know — in addition to being a professional audience member (like Laura!) — he is also a savvy marketing expert, who runs influencer marketing campaigns for shows like Be More Chill — on which he was also a producer — and Emojiland: The Musical.

Philly accents abound to start this episode. The boys get into some well pronounced aluminum. Matt implores everyone to recycle their own aluminum and stop putting it under their arms. The fellas think all the religious 13’s are a bit specious. Elmer’s kin, Bar Mitz Fudd, is welcomed to the show. Imagine two rabbis doing DVD commentary. Bill simplifies religion for everyone. Matt is concerned that his segment is getting lengthy. The boys happen upon a catch phrase for the new age. Bill jumps the gun on Judas’ jersey number. Matt deconstructs the Hammurabi and Swiss sandwich. Bill makes a toothpaste joke that can’t get put back into the tube. Matt likes a “Devil’s Dozen,” While Bill likes a “Long Dozen.” The boys decipher the PG-13 designation. The age of consent and American race relations are tiptoed around. Our heroes bravely and hilariously cast Antonio Banderas. Matt thinks Rugby guys are crummy and scrummy. Bill eschews his recap duties and the boys get into the minute. Rick finds Jim in aisle 13 this week. Ricky likes to “work the issue.” Bill is a targeted shopper while Matt likes to roam the landscape. Trader Joe's, Cosby Show guy gets a shout out. Matt gets “lured” into a discussion. Ricky is not a fan of the Goji. Bill is situationally persistent and he updates us on the Glengarry Glen Ross lady production. The boys speculate that a LuPone and maybe a Pidgeon might be involved. Finally, as always, Matt and Bill wonder and disagree about “What Would David Mamet Think.”Find out more at https://gggrinfinite.pinecast.co

Peeno Noir is Expanding! Actor Tituss Burgess’s real wine company Pinot Noir, inspired by his Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s character viral music video, will unveil a new wine for Pride Week and a rosé. Whether your celebrating the LGBTQ or can’t get enough of the nimble actor and deliriously delightful singer, you’ll feel better about splurging on Pinot Noir after seeing how Burgess does in a blind taste test. Catie Lazarus, host of Employee of the Month, wanted to see if the 37 years old, Georgia native really knows his wine. A consummate performer, Burgess was game. His honesty and humility, as much as his humor, makes their interview a must listen. “Sometimes on Broadway, you have an inflated budget to do what is essentially a community theater production,” Burgess explains with refreshing candor. Without missing a beat, he flashes a mischievous grin. As he acknowledges the bad and the ugly about working in theater, he never forgets the good. Burgess points out how intoxicating Broadway and television, at their best, can be as he tips his proverbial hat to the legendary Patti LuPone and fellow actor Jon Hamm, who are seated in the audience at Joe’s Pub, and will also be individually interviewed and honored on Employee of the Month’s season finale. Their interviews were recorded live at Joe’s Pub and will roll out over the next three weeks on Employee of the Month’s podcast. A performer herself, Lazarus talks to Burgess about the nitty-gritty of auditioning, and the two confess to being late for their 30 Rock Auditions. For Burgess, tardiness, he says, worked in his favor, but it’s really his talent which led Tina Fey took a risk in casting a relatively unknown bit player in a recurring role as D’Fwan in 30 Rock. Burgess batted it out of the park, but she may have developed a role for him in the break out comedy hit on Netflix because he is clearly also a joy to be around. He also displayed depth, as he spoke openly about the role faith and spirituality play and the challenges of homophobia growing up as a gay, black, devout Christian. It’s not just Lazarus and the audience who are having fun, as Burgess thanks Lazarus and says, “this is one the greatest night of my life.” Check out her upcoming interviews with Jon Hamm and Patti LuPone, the latter of which features Burgess and LuPone singing impromptu Meadowlark, composed by Stephen Schwartz, to hear why. Can't get enough? For this episode we're bringing you the tale of Broadway's ultimate superfan. From as far back as he can remember, Ben Rimalower has been obsessed with Patti Lupone. When the opportunity came up to work on a show she was starring in, he couldn't believe his luck. That experience would be just the beginning of a long and fabulous--if complicated--relationship with the Tony-winning star. It's SUCH a good story that he ultimately turned it into a one man show called Patti Issues.
Patti LuPone may be best know for her irresistible voice, but the two-time Grammy and Tony, and Olivier Award winner’s secret weapon is feeling everything. Lord knows, especially on stage, there are actors who overact and mug, in doing so, leave no room for audiences to respond. Then there are ones who are so muted, that if you stuck a needle in their limp arm, they wouldn’t flinch. LuPone thrives when she can be unflinchingly honest in a performance, which requires discipline to turn into art. She did in Evita, Gypsy, and Anything Goes, as well and now in the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. In it, LuPone revealed that you can get crabs as easily from sex as you can from the theater. We also spoke about...

This week, on the Strip: We spoke to her nearly two years ago and she was hinting at a comeback she didn't want to jinx. And, in fact, Broadway legend – and Steve's gayest obsession – Patti Lupone did have a trick up her sleeve: A few months later, she returned to the Great White Way in the title role of “Gypsy” and walked off with her first Tony award since her 1981 triumph for “Evita.” Lupone is back in Vegas on June 20 and 21 for shows at the Orleans, so Steve got her back on the line to see how her life has changed. Among other things, Lupone went on a bit of a rant about poor Susan Boyle and the nature of celebrity. That's coming up. Also, we check in with Mayor Oscar Goodman about Obama's recent visit and gives an update on plans to resettle the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas. In Banter: Cinevegas, Sheer Madness, a listeners' Wynn visit, how Steve saved $400 on his Connecticut rental car, All-In: The Poker Movie, Charo, Larry King, MGM Grand Egypt and more.
