Raise your hand if you've been to therapy before. My first time, if I'm remembering correctly, is a few months after my Dad died when I was in my mid-twenties, and my college roommate set me up with her aunt, who was a renowned psychoanalyst. She also happened to be Asian. Now that it's been decades and I've had so many more experiences with so many more therapists, all of whom have been white, I realize how rare and fortunate it was for me to have had that experience of a therapist who culturally understood me, which then played a formative role in my own understanding of my relationship with myself, my parents, self care and success and my place in the world. If you've never had the experience of having therapists who are the same race as you, you might really get this visceral sense of relief that we are talking about. This unspoken understanding that can-not always, but often, exist in those spaces of similarity. I think it's played a huge part in the relationship we have had, as multi-ethnic daughters of one Japanese immigrant parent and one white American parent each - there were just some things we didn't have to explain to each other. Which is why when we learned about a whole mental health support system - one we've come to learn doesn't have to just include therapists, but a whole system of community support - that is centered on Asian Americans, we wanted to seize the opportunity to talk about culturally responsive care, about what it means to work on ourselves to be better people, and more. What to listen for: What it means to be a better person Therapy 101 - what challenges people go to therapy for, what types of therapists are out there What culturally responsive care means, and how this applies to the Asian American community How we can support our own mental health, and that of others About our guests: Soo Jin Lee, a licensed therapist, executive director of Yellow Chair Collective, and co-founder of Entwine Community, has made a profound impact in mental health advocacy, shaped by her own experiences as an Asian immigrant. Her work focuses on culturally responsive mental health care, addressing the unique challenges faced by immigrant and Asian American communities. She co-authored the influential book Where I Belong: Healing Trauma and Embracing Asian American Identity, which explores identity and healing through a culturally informed lens. Recognized by NPR, PBS, CBS, and CUNY, Soo Jin is dedicated to fostering community support and advancing culturally sensitive mental health services. Linda Yoon is the founder of Yellow Chair Collective and co-founder of Entwine Community, organizations dedicated to addressing mental health education and service gaps in services for BIPOC communities, with a special focus on Asian Americans. She is recognized as a co-author of the book "Where I Belong: Healing Trauma and Embracing Asian American Identity," which delves deeply into themes of Asian American identity and resilience, alongside the racial, cultural, and intergenerational dynamics present within Asian American communities. Linda's work has been recognized and featured in media outlets including NPR, PBS, CBS, LA Times, and Buzzfeed. With a heartfelt commitment to well-being and community empowerment, Linda drives changes through mental health programs and advocacy initiatives. Brief synopsis of the book: Soo Jin Lee and Linda Yoon have personally observed the frequent neglect of mental health issues in their own immigrant families and within Asian and Asian American communities. Their book "Where I Belong" illuminates how trauma perpetuates through generations and impacts relationships, emphasizing the Asian American experience for better understanding and healing of racial and intergenerational trauma. “Where I Belong” offers crucial therapeutic techniques, reflective questions, journaling prompts, and grounding exercises, empowering readers to recognize their intergenerational strengths and resilience and to fully embrace their identity and cultural heritage. About Yellow Chair Collective: Yellow Chair Collective is a psychotherapist group with a special focus on Asian and Asian American identity based in California, Oregon, Washington, and New York. Asian Americans and the multicultural population struggle with unique pain points. Much of what Asian American and multicultural therapy identifies as intergenerational trauma or racial discrimination has been neglected and dismissed throughout American history. As a Collective, we are dedicated to bridging cultural identity as a huge part of everyone's mental struggles. The Yellow Chair Collective

Rockie Lynne is a talented singer, songwriter and guitarist. And, while that is impressive enough, when you hear Rockie's story, it becomes all the more fascinating. "Rockie Lynne- Where I Belong," is a new documentary film telling the story of the album and of Rockie's life. The accompanying album, Love, is more of the honest, sincere songwriting you'd expect. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime and the record is available wherever you get your music. For more information, check out Rockie's website, or follow him on Facebook.
The hero's journey traces a main character who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Country artist, philanthropist, veteran, and North Carolina native Rockie Lynne's life story is truly a hero's journey. From his humble beginnings of being left at the door of Barium Springs Home for Children, to touring the world, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and writing songs recorded by superstars, you can say Rockie's narrative is the stuff of American folklore. Rockie grew up in Statesville, North Carolina, and was adopted by a Southern Baptist family of limited means. He grew up on Statesville's dirt roads, and they led him to anthemic success in the entertainment world as a triple threat: a world-class songwriter, a captivating performer, and a diversely accomplished instrumentalist. Where I Belong deftly merges a musician's quest for authentic self-expression with a touching search for familial lineage. There's Rockie's all-consuming love of the guitar which spans picking out licks on a second hand record player to his post-Army dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. Incidentally, these finely-honed chops remain intact, and they are a staple of Rockie's music, dazzlingly displayed in his live-show duels with his fiddle player, Dirk Dowell. A profound chapter in Where I Belong is Rockie meeting his biological father, Clyde Holloway. The pair share a powerful moment when Clyde gifts Rockie with his prized Martin D35, a guitar that he had owned most of his adult life. “When he gave me that guitar, I felt a closeness to him that didn't exist before,” Rockie says. Clyde's guitar has since become an integral part of Rockie's artistry as a player and a composer because of the significance of its lineage. The newly-penned “My Father's Guitar,” a single from Love, out March 29th, commemorates this moving moment. After hundreds and hundreds of watering-hole one-nighters, Rockie got his big break being signed personally by then Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris. He issued his self-titled solo debut in 2006, and landed three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. After Universal South folded, Rockie, an accomplished engineer, producer, and owner of his own recording studio, Tone Studios in Statesville, pushed ahead releasing nine solo albums to date. Rockie has generously harnessed the expanse of his public platform in service of others. He is a veteran, having served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, and this legacy is close to Rockie's heart. He often performs for patriotic and military events, and his original songs are regularly licensed for use in conjunction with veteran and patriotic-themed programming. In 2004, Rockie co-founded the Tribute to the Troops motorcycle ride to raise funds and awareness for America's fallen soldiers and their families. Today, Rockie is back in Statesville where he has a stable and loving family and his own recording studio in which he nurtures local talent, and around town he's mythologized as an Elvis-like figure with his chiseled-face handsomeness, his down-to-earth charms, and his immense artistic gifts. Looking back on his journey, and through the process of making the documentary and connecting with his biological family for the first time, Rockie reflects: “I went from feeling unloved to knowing I'm loved, and that I've always been loved. I found my roots—I am somebody from somewhere.”https://www.rockielynne.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

The life you desire, the world doesn't give it to you and the world can't take it away! You are the Metaphysical Master of your life experience regardless of what a spiritually desolate society is collectively creating around you. After all, you are a microcosm of the Macrocosm - a little God - lacking in nothing! On this episode, I dive into the meaning behind my song No Apologies from the album Where I Belong and come out with pure conviction about creating our own freedom in the face of hate. Remember, darkness is not a spiritual entity. Only Light, only goodness, is a spiritual entity and all that doesn't reflect this light is merely the absence of light. The darkness can never withstand the light. Be the light. Support the show (http://Patreon.com/LeviKreis)
Have you noticed that whatever group, community, or professional world you live in that the collective body has created a set of limitations everyone arbitrarily bows down to? This episode is for you rebels, determined to make your own rules and trust your own vision. It's time to stop giving credibility to these collective agreements of limitation. My song Ain't Nobody from the album Where I Belong is the perfect backstory and message to encourage you to keep believing in the importance of your contribution to this world...at any age. When your vision is sharp and you can feel every detail of the future you within your body, synchronicity lifts the veil and reveals that which you desire to manifest. It cannot help but do so. That is the magnetic power of your vibration. This week, I dive into my song Not Afraid from the album Where I Belong. In order to use the law of attraction intentionally, it helps to first look at how we've been using the law of attraction unintentionally - creating our current life from a place of limitation. Sometimes those limiting thoughts, feelings or beliefs are not as obvious as we'd like. After all, some weeds have deeper roots than others. This episode talks about how to use your feelings as an internal guidance system that will lead you right to the place where we need to do the work.
