Sufjan Stevens' 2005 concept album “Illinois” enjoys cult status for its lush orchestrations and inventive lyrics. Tony Award-winner and Resident Choreographer of the New York City Ballet, Justin Peck, has transformed the album, with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of 2018's “Fairview” Jackie Sibblies Drury, into a full-length theatrical performance that blends dance, theater, live music and storytelling into a breathtakingly emotional coming-of-age journey. “Illinoise” was presented at the Bard Fisher Center in summer of 2023 as a SummerScape commission. The Bard staging and the off-Broadway production at Park Avenue Armory earlier this year were sold out, highly praised, and “Illinoise” transferred to the St. James Theatre on Broadway this month. Opening night was April 24 and the limited engagement is scheduled to end on August 10. This morning, it was announced that “Illinoise” has been nominated for 4 Tony Awards.

Eric Walker featuring ACM Buddy MixStar Wars child star actor Eric Walker is in full throttle with his music career involving his lifelong friend ACM, Buddy Mix. ACM standing for Alpha Centauri Man, has teamed up with Eric to create original music with a twist of alien themes running throughout.‘Chaos', originally composed as ONE WORLD for Michael Jackson took a turn when it landed in the hands of lyricist and composer Buddy Mix. Now wrapped in an alien character, this track totally changed direction and thrives in its success today.”Buddy ACM got a hold of it and flipped it!” – quotes Eric. These wonderful artists talk about their song ‘Chaos' as a beautiful energy in the world that embraces diversity and celebrates differences.Eric Walker reflects on his time as a child star actor in Star Wars and what it was like being on set every day, “it was the hardest I worked”. A chat about children's mental health led to conclusions about the style of care and dependency on parental support. Eric speaks of his dad with fondness, who sat with him every day and supported him yet always reminded Eric, “you're going to be a nice guy for everybody”. Eric's father is credited with a solid and loving environment, “it's all about the upbringing,” says Eric. Buddy Mix has a successful background in the theatre industry, responsible for writing the music for the musical A Little Meditation. Buddy received an award at the Hollywood Roosevelt Theatre for best music director from the NAACP Theatre Award Committee. Later, Buddy was invited to write another musical for Dragula and was awarded Best New Musical by The Los Angeles Theatre Festival. Buddy is working on a music video with Daddy Andre and is looking forward to making an album with Eric Walker. This is an enlightening conversation with these two gentlemen as we tap into mental health and spirituality, the Laws of attraction, and the devotion needed to successfully pursue a career in the arts. 'Safe' also has another connotation of being not willing to take risks or to push a boundary. Michael R. Jackson is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Strange Loop, a play into which he poured almost 20 years of self-investigation. He's also fresh from a Tony Award for Best New Musical as well as being named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2022. In this episode, Jackson talks about what it means to be fearless as an artist, the lies of our “if this, then that” culture, and how the illusion of identity is a powerful means to foster understanding. A theatre producer and lawyer, Michael Rubinoff (TW:@mrubinof) IG:@mrubinoff)is most passionate about igniting creation and supporting storytellers. Over the last decade he sparked a renaissance in Canadian musical theatre by developing thirty new musicals through the Canadian Music Theatre Project (the "CMTP"), an internationally recognized incubator of new works that he founded in 2011. Michael conceived the creation of the international hit musical Come From Away, for which he is a Producer and the Creative Consultant on productions worldwide, and has received the Olivier Award for Best Musical, a Tony Award Nomination for Best New Musical and the Meritorious Service Cross awarded by the Governor General of Canada on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen and all Canadians. During a decade of service in post-secondary education, Michael has served as academic leader, director of a research centre and elected member of a Board of Governors. He has collaborated with producers, creators and educators around the world to support innovation and creativity in theatre and arts education. As a leading expert and thought leader in the development of new musicals, he has been called upon to provide guidance and leadership to not for profit organizations, colleges and universities, commercial producers, emerging arts practitioners and government agencies. Education: Michael completed his B.A. (Political Science) and LL.B. at Western University. He was the recipient of the Dean Ivan C. Rand Award in recognition of meritorious academic standing throughout his years in law, and outstanding contributions in the service of the undergraduate students of the Faculty of Law. He remains the only student to have been elected twice as president of Western Law's Student Legal Society. He also served as the elected student representative to Western's Board of Governors. He was a member of the 2000 winning team of the Niagara International Law Moot Court Competition and the valedictorian of his graduating law class. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002 and is a member of the Law Society of Ontario. Michael is a graduate of the Commercial Theatre Institute's intensive producing program in New York and is a 2015 member of the Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference. “I think only people in the theater know what a producer is. The public does not know. It knows a writer writes, and an actor acts, and a director tells them what to do. A producer raises money. Well, he does, and in some cases that's all he does. But the workers in the theater know that this is not the real thing. A producer is a rare, paradoxical genius -hard-headed, soft-hearted, cautious, reckless, a hopeful innocent in fair weather, a stern pilot in stormy weather, a mathematician who prefers to ignore the laws of mathematics and trust intuition, an idealist, a realist, a practical dreamer, a sophisticated gambler, a stage-struck child. That's a producer.”— Oscar Hammerstein II

SEUSSICAL COMPOSER: Stephen Flaherty LYRICIST: Lynn Ahrens BOOK: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty SOURCE: The stories of Dr. Seuss (c. 1950s) DIRECTOR: Rob Marshall CHOREOGRAPHER: Kathleen Marshall PRINCIPLE CAST: Kevin Chamberlain (Horton), Janine LaManna (Gertrude), David Shiner (The Cat in the Hat) OPENING DATE: Nov 30, 2000 CLOSING DATE: May 20, 2001 PERFORMANCES: 198 SYNOPSIS: The wild world of Dr. Seuss comes to life as Seuss' various characters come together to tell the story of Horton, a lonely elephant, and Gertrude McFuzz, a shy bird, as they fall in love with one another. Nathan Brewer argues for Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Seussical as a significant show that, despite lackluster reviews and box office sales, went on to find financial success as a staple within community theatre and educational institutions, especially through the work of director Marcia Milgrom Dodge. Seussical's ability to redefine theatrical financial success, and public exposure, after its failure on Broadway, offered shows that were not commercially viable to become regionally successful such as Little Women, The Addams Family, and Be More Chill. Nathan Brewer is a director of theatre, opera, concerts, film, and events. Directing credits include Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Washington National Opera, Park Avenue Armory, Theatreworks/USA, New York Musical Theatre Festival, numerous symphonic and pops concerts, and televised award shows. Nathan is on the musical theatre faculty at The New Studio on Broadway at NYU/Tisch, and The College of New Jersey. He has previously taught at Penn State and Westminster Choir College. Assisting credits include Aladdin (Broadway), and Relatively Speaking (Broadway). Nathan is the Founder & Artistic Director of Recreational Arts, a performing arts educational organization, with programs in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Stephen Flaherty is the composer of the Broadway musicals Ragtime (Tony, Drama Desk, OCC Awards, two Grammy nominations), Seussical (Grammy, Drama Desk nominations), Once on This Island (Tony nomination, Olivier Award, Best Musical) and Rocky. Additional Broadway includes Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life (original songs) and Neil Simon's Proposals (incidental music). Stephen has also written four musicals at Lincoln Center Theatre: The Glorious Ones (OCC, Drama Desk nominations), Dessa Rose (OCC, Drama Desk nominations), A Man of No Importance (OCC, Best Musical, Drama Desk nomination) and My Favorite Year. Other theater includes In Your Arms (Old Globe), Little Dancer (Kennedy Center), Lucky Stiff (Playwrights Horizons) and Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein (Chicago's Jefferson Award, Best New Musical.) Film includes Anastasia (two Academy Award and two Golden Globe nominations), the documentary After The Storm and Lucky Stiff. Mr. Flaherty's concert music has premiered at the Hollywood Bowl, Boston's Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Guggenheim Museum and Symphony Space. This year celebrates Stephen's 32-year collaboration with lyricist-librettist Lynn Ahrens. Stephen and Lynn are members of the Dramatists Guild Council and co- founders of the Dramatists Guild Fellows Program. In 2015 they were inducted into the Theater Hall Of Fame. S1E11: The Girl From Oz Featuring Carmel DeanThis week, composer, musical director, and arranger Carmel Dean stops by the stage door! Carmel’s credits include music direction of Broadway’s If/Then starring Idina Menzel, as well as the national tour. Other Broadway credits include Hands on a Hardbody, American Idiot, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Carmel’s first musical, Renascence made its debut in 2018 by the Transport Group and was awarded Best New Musical at the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. Carmel also talks about her experience writing her debut musical, Renascence, and what it’s like working with a lyricist who’s been deceased for nearly 75 years (The lyrics were all poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay). In addition, we chat about the role of a critic in the arts and mediumship, why they’re not needed, and how the real beauty comes when we let go of expectation and live in the now of what we create. Jimmy chats about what it’s like to give uncomfortable (just awkward, not scary) messages to a client when Spirit is insistent they be relayed, and Carmel parallels that with what it was like giving corrections and notes to the incredible Betty Buckley during Elegies, and how to overcome the nerves of working with big names by remembering what the vision of the work is. As usual, we’ll discuss Jimmy’s reading with Carmel as well what it was like conducting Idina Menzel’s Tony Award performance from a toilet stall on the fourth floor of Radio City Music Hall. Jersey Boys is by far my favorite Broadway musical. For those who are unfamiliar with Jersey Boys, you must be living under a rock! Jersey Boys was a 2005 jukebox musical with music by Bob Gaudio, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. It is presented in a documentary-style format that dramatizes the formation, success and eventual break-up of the 1960s rock 'n' roll group The Four Seasons. The musical is structured as four "seasons", each narrated by a different member of the band who gives his own perspective on its history and music. Songs include "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Sherry", "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)", "My Eyes Adored You", "Stay", "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Working My Way Back to You" and "Rag Doll", among others. The title refers to the fact that the members of The Four Seasons are from New Jersey and are men. The musical ran on Broadway from 2005 to 2017, and since its debut has seen two North American national tours and productions in London's West End, Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, Singapore, South Africa, The Netherlands and elsewhere. Jersey Boys won four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Jersey Boys was the behind the scenes story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this was the musical that rocked the world. Let’s talk about some legal issues that surfaced during the running of the musical. Specifically, there are two cases that grew out of copyright infringement claims and shook the foundation of the Jersey Boys empire. They are SOFA Ent., Inc. v. Dodger Prod. and Corbello v. DeVito. In this episode, I'll discuss each case. For those who are die-hard fans of "Jersey Boys," you will love the new musical, "A Bronx Tale" that has taken Broadway by storm.

We also listen two songs from the composing team Carner and Gregor; we're sure you'll be hearing more about them in the future.
