Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. Has the hype for Steelers sixth-round pick Will Howard gotten a bit out of control? How valid are the comparisons between his game and that of Ben Roethlisberger? And what are proper expectations for him in a quarterback room with Mason Rudolph and — possibly — Aaron Rodgers? Paul tackles those questions and more. What should we make of the Steelers' Week 4 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, now announced as their Ireland game? Is Don Kelly making a difference as manager for the Pirates or is his impact overstated? And what should Penguins fans be learning from the NHL playoffs?
Pope Leo XIV is from Chicago, RIP Chet Lemon, Meghan Markel sued, a missing Diddy witness, Tyreek Hill's kids, Hawk Tuah's Vanity Fair interview, a bonerline, Maz is mad at a horse, Jim's List: Whistling Songs, and we're worried about David Hasselhoff. Jack White is the new Detroit Tigers good luck charm. Drew is now woke for being mad at a woman for saying the n-word. We get it, all we talk about is Stuttering John. Poor Meghan Markle. She's being accused of giving out a recipe for homemade bath salts that is harmful to diabetics. NOW she is officially the worst person in the world. Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders has been the talk of the town after slipping in the draft. It was so triggering that a random dude is suing the NFL for $100M. A Diddy victim that was going to be a major witness is missing and not cooperating. Uh oh... We have a new pope! And he's from Chicago. Joe Biden was on The View today. He really came off great. Not being President anymore has really given him a lot more energy. Tyreek Hill's ex spilled the beans on how many kids he actually has. John Fetterman's wife's big tubes have been found. John had a bit of a meltdown in front of the teacher's union. An 18-year-old white kid with a 34 on his ACT and a 4.0 GPA can't get into Ivy League schools. We wonder why... Hawk Tuah really clears up the air in her new Vanity Fair interview. David Hasselhoff is in a wheelchair. Dr Marc Fellhauer gives his diagnosis. A new Bonerline. One of the Paul Brothers (who cares which one) interviews Tom Brady. Tom Brady is less cool than we thought. Jonathan Lipnicki's is still hoping to make it big on the heels of Jerry Maguire. Antonio Brown is still beefing with Ben Roethlisberger. Word on the streets is that Ben's sister is a big fan of AB. Maz finally calls in. This is Tom's world, we're just living in it. Happy Thursday! Will Howard and Jack Sawyer appeared on Ben Roethlisberger's podcast shortly after arriving in Pittsburgh, and the two shared some thoughts that "traditional" Buckeye fans wouldn't necessarily agree with. Stephen A. Smith thinks Darius Garland is making business decisions, and Brian Windhorst shoots him down. Matt Finkes joins the show to respond to Howard and Sawyer. Mike Florio and Adam Schefter don't appear to be on the same page regarding the Aaron Rodgers timeline. Bobby Carpenter calls into the show to offer some clarity on why it would benefit Rodgers to sit out for at least one more week. Will Howard named specific schools who were also in the mix for his recruitment in the transfer portal. What does this Dallas offense look like with George Pickens in it? Ice and TLC beat Rothman in trivia. Former Kansas City Chiefs kicker and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud joins the show with an amazing path to football for Gold Jacket Thursday. May 7, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 131 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers trading WR George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. We go over the trade details to start with. Alex and I discuss the Pickens' exit via a trade from several different angles during this show. We talk about why they possibly didn't trade him before or during the draft. We also discuss the team not drafting a wide receiver this year and go over those available players at that position that were still on the board at the conclusion of the second round. Could any of these players offered significant contributions to the Steelers in 2025 as rookies? We discuss that question. Will the Steelers look to add another experienced wide receiver now that Pickens has been traded? We attempt to answer that question and even build a compact list of wide receivers the Steelers might could trade for or sign as free agents. We make sure to question the Steelers plan at wide receiver at this point and especially on the heels of what transpired in 2024 at that position. Does the trading of Pickens at all impact the decision that veteran QB Aaron Rodgers has yet to make when it comes to him possibly signing with the Steelers? We address that question as well. After thoroughly looking at the Pickens' situation and impact of the trade from all angles, Alex and I move on to briefly discuss former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger having QB Will Howard and OLB Jack Sawyer, two members of this year's draft class, on the latest episode of his podcast. This 85-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap as well. We end this show by answering several emails we received from listeners of the show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jon Gruden sounds like the world's biggest Will Howard fan. Did the Steelers get a steal with the Ohio State QB? Will there be a reason for some local fans to root for him to fail? Poni had a staggering stat regarding 6th round QBs – only one of which have a winning record since the drafting of Tom Brady, and it's Drew Henson at 1-0. What went wrong for Howard in the Michigan game? What will the career look like for Will Howard? What would be a good/bad one? One caller said Howard will be better than Ben Roethlisberger. Former Ohio State LB Bobby Carpenter joined the show. The guys started by telling Cam Heyward Happy Birthday, who Bobby almost crossed paths with at Ohio State. Bobby didn't love the group of QBs in this draft and doesn't think Will Howard should have been the top one taken, but he pointed out some things he really likes about his game. Bobby said the confidence and command are the two things that will translate well from college to the NFL. Bobby said Howard doesn't have the strongest arm in the world, but he shared a few guys he played with in the league that were successful without having it. Bobby talked about the importance of a guy winning over the locker room. Poni wanted to ask a few questions about Jack Sawyer. Bobby said Sawyer is a jack-of-all-trades type player on defense. Bobby thinks the Steelers got two great value picks on the third day of the draft. Bobby told a few stories about Terrelle Pryor, who was around his time at Ohio State, after we had the recent discussion regarding all-time high school athletes.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. Is former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underrated compared to names like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and others as former Baltimore Ravens rival Terrell Suggs suggested on a podcast recently? Or does he get his just due around the league? Paul offers thoughts on that topic, plus the continuing fallout from the NFL draft and general manager Omar Khan's selection of names like Derrick Harmon, Kaleb Johnson, Jack Sawyer and Will Howard. Then later, Paul reacts to the Pirates' weekend sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres and ponders the future of manager Derek Shelton. Should he be coaching for his job over the next couple of weeks? Will Oneil Cruz, Andrew McCutchen and the offense ever catch up to Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and the pitching? And is there any hope left for this season with the team already more than 10 games under the .500 mark?

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers will be willing to sign a second wide receiver to a long-term contract extension after already agreeing to a deal with DK Metcalf, and what a new contract with George Pickens might look like. The Steelers have not signed multiple wide receivers to big-time contracts in their recent past, but that also came while the team was paying big money to Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. The doesn't mean they won't pay two receivers while they're not paying a big-time quarterback. Part of the money that quarterback is earning is the assumption that he won't need high-priced receivers to succeed. Will the Steelers want to extend Pickens? It doesn't seem that they're charging into the offseason with that as the plan. After around $300,000 in fines over the last two seasons, the Steelers would probably like to see an increased level of maturity from Pickens before committing to a long-term deal. If they do decide to sign Pickens, how much will he cost? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ben Roethlisberger said there is no pressure on Will Howard, but he should have the mentality that he can be the man. Ben referenced a few backup QBs during his days. Poni said he would prefer the Steelers have Howard split the duties this season with Mason Rudolph because there's no upside with Aaron Rodgers. What is their ceiling with Rodgers?

ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – The discussion was around Bill Belichick and his 20-something girlfriend, where everything just seems extremely bizarre. We then reflected on the NFL Draft that saw the Shedeur Sanders slide all the way to the 5th round. Aditi talked about the lead up to the draft and how Sanders handled things, which impacted his stock. Aditi was stunned by how far Sanders dropped. The guys asked Aditi how she would handicap the Browns QB situation. Aditi brought up the trade that had the Browns moving off a ‘generational player' in Travis Hunter, but the capital they received may have been too rich. Aditi called out the Browns for taking 2 QBs in this draft. She credited the Steelers for enacting a plan while also drafting a developmental QB. On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo ponder the importance of the 2025 NFL draft to the franchise's long-term future. Why is it essential for GM Omar Khan, assistant GM Andy Weidl and coach Mike Tomlin to properly balance short-term needs with the potential to add long-term staples? How does that balance fit into the conversations around names including DLs Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant and Walter Nolen; QBs Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart; RBs Omarion Hampton and Dylan Sampson; and defensive backs like Jahdae Barron? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks QBs. How did the franchise get here? With only Mason Rudolph as their only viable option under contract? Should they have taken more NFL draft chances on QBs following Ben Roethlisberger's retirement? Or even before it? Or were they correct to take the chances they did with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson last season. Or potentially Aaron Rodgers in 2025? Then in the third segment, the guys ponder lessons from former GM Kevin Colbert's early successes and his late failures that contributed to the current state of today's roster.

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the team can or will put all of its eggs in the 2026 NFL Draft quarterback basket. The 2026 NFL Draft quarterback class is expected to be a very strong one, led by players like Texas' Arch Manning, Penn State's Drew Allar and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier. But as shown over the weekend, what looks like it will happen next year does not always come to pass. Nico Iamaleava was expected to be in that list before he departed Tennessee amid an NIL dispute over the weekend. Will he still be? It's possible but far from certain at this point. Even if the Steelers are able to trade up into the middle of a deep quarterback class, there's no guarantee they'd hit on that pick. Maybe they'd get the next Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe they'd get Phillip Rivers, his less-successful but still-good draft classmate. Maybe they'd get J.P. Losman. That's why the Steelers are still looking hard the 2025 NFL Draft class, because nothing in the future is certain, and even if they don't take a quarterback early in next week's draft, they'll probably take one at some point. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We also pointed out how Roethlisberger speaks highly of other QBs since his departure. 93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff firmly believes Aaron Rodgers has a handshake deal done with the Steelers. Jeff doesn't think there's any way Mike Tomlin and others would be as OK with waiting around if they didn't have it all but done. Jeff pointed out Rodgers' numbers from last year and why they weren't that bad. Jeff doesn't think the conspiracy of Rodgers announcing his move during the Pat McAfee ‘big night out' next week will come to pass. Speaking of conspiracies, we talked about Mark Kaboly falling asleep at the NFL owner's meetings, which caused him to go viral. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. March 26, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 111 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to discussing QB Russell Wilson signing with the New York Giants on Tuesday. We discuss Wilson's deal and thus his exit from the Pittsburgh Steelers after just one season. Alex and I discuss the one-year that Wilson played in Pittsburgh and what likely resulted in him not re-signing with the team this offseason. We also roll back to comments made in late January by Steelers president Artt Rooney II concerning his hope being that the team would re-sign one of Wilson or QB Justin Fields this offseason. With Wilson off to the Giants, Alex and I discuss the Steelers' current compensatory draft pick situation for 2026. We talk about the possibility of the team having a total of four third-round draft picks in 2026 should Wilson and Fields both have solid 2025 seasons for their new teams. We also discuss the possibility of the Steelers ultimately being able to trade up in the 2026 NFL Draft to select a first-round quarterback. With Wilson now out of the picture, Alex and I discuss what that means for QB Aaron Rodgers possibly finally landing with the Steelers in the very near future. Will we get a decision within the next two weeks when it comes to Rodgers' future? We discuss that topic as we all wait to see if he'll be the team's next starting quarterback. We move on to discuss the Steelers claiming OL Lecitus Smith off waivers from the New England Patriots a few days ago. We also discuss the news that free agent WR Terrace Marshall recently came in for a visit. As expected, the Steelers have a large contingent at the Ohio State pro day on Wednesday, so we discuss that news and the Wednesday report that HC Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan met with three notable players from that school on Tuesday night. Hall of Fame CB Mel Blount was on the latest episode of the Ben Roethlisberger podcast, so Alex and I discuss a few blunt things that he had to say about the Steelers organization. In the first hour, we chat with the man who negotiated that monster extension with Josh Allen, Bills GM Brandon Beane, who gives us insight into what it's like reaching an agreement like that, Josh Allen's involvement in the Bills' draft process, and more. Also in the first hour, 2x Super Bowl Champion Ben Roethlisberger to talk about the blockbuster trade of Metcalf to the Steelers, who may end up their quarterback, and more. To start the second hour, Rams WR Puka Nacua kicks things off sharing how excited he is to team up with new Rams WR Davante Adams, what his offseason looks like, and how negotiations might go over the #17 jersey number. Also in the second hour, we are joined by NFL Senior Insider Ian Rapaport, for insight on WR Chris Godwin remaining in Tampa Bay, clarity on DT Milton Williams NOT going to the Panthers as previously reported, heading instead to the Patriots for a monster deal, his view on how the Quarterback dominoes falling into place, and more. Throughout the show, news broke like QB Sam Darnold landing a massive deal to join the Seattle Seahawks, QB Justin Fields joining the New York Jets, Josh Sweat joining the Arizona Cardinals, S Cam Bynum heading to the Colts, S Talanoa Hufanga moving to the Broncos, C Drew Dalman joining a reloaded Bears offensive line, CB DJ Reed heading to Detroit, WR Joshua Palmer becoming the latest weapon for the Buffalo Bills, and so much more.
