From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. The M's new wing triples its exhibit space in downtown St. Paul Architectural historian Marjorie Pearson of St. Paul wants people to know that the new, expanded wing of the Minnesota Museum of Art, commonly known as the M, is now open in the historic arcade of the Endicott building in downtown St. Paul. The major renovation triples the available exhibit space for Minnesota's oldest art museum. The exhibit in the new wing, entitled “Here, Now,” features 150 works from the M's permanent collection, ranging across centuries and styles. The museum is open Thursdays through Sundays and admission is free. When you visit, Marjorie recommends you take time to admire the architecture in addition to the art.Marjorie says: This is a premier office building that was designed by Cass Gilbert in the early 1890s and the arcade with its wonderful arch stained-glass ceiling, beautifully restored by Stonehouse Stained Glass Studio in Avon, Minn., really enhances the whole gallery space. The Endicott building was constructed around the historic Pioneer building … the two buildings were combined. The galleries now are in the historic arcade, which was a shopping arcade for people in the offices downtown — a precursor to a shopping mall.[Note: Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) was a prominent architect who lived and worked in Minnesota for portions of his life; he designed many important buildings, including the Minnesota State Capitol and the U.S. Supreme Court Building.] — Marjorie PearsonArtist created, student-curated Black joy Billy Nduwimana Siyomvo got an early view of the exhibit “Layers of Joy,” which he called “mind-blowing.” The exhibit features five Minneapolis artists — Leslie Barlow, Alexandra Beaumont, Eyenga Bokamba, Cameron Patricia Downey and seangarrison — whose selected works celebrate Black joy and identity. Billy loved the work, and he recommends taking your time to take it in from all angles. He was also struck by the exhibit's backstory: the show was curated by University of Minnesota students enrolled in ARTH 3940: Black Art in Minneapolis, taught by Dr. Daniel M. Greenberg and Dr. Dwight K. Lewis, Jr. Billy describes the show: When you walk in, the first thing that embraces you is colors —different textures, colors, different stories. Each art piece I felt like was made with love. What I love about this [exhibit] is that this class is basically giving these artists a platform. I don't think it's every day that you hear about curating art; people need to understand that, yes, these artists are very important, but without the right curated spaces, their art is not put on a platform that it deserves to be on. — Billy Nduwimana SiyomvoWhere design meets play Rebecca Montpetit of Rochester is a lifelong fan of the Rochester Art Center, and she's already making plans to go back again with her family to see Mini Golf and Chairs. The interactive exhibit consists of 20 chairs from the private college of an Owatonna family, which artist then used as inspiration to create five mini golf holes. You can't sit on the chairs, but you can play the golf holes. Clubs of all sizes, including adaptive clubs, are part of the exhibit, and there is a par for each hole. The exhibit runs through May 4, 2025. Rebecca describes what it was like to visit the exhibit with her kids, aged 8 and 10: The beginning of the exhibit leads you through this hall of chairs. And it was a really fascinating discussion with our kids to talk about. We said, all of these have the same purpose: to sit! But look at all of the materials and ways that you can create ways to sit. They're everything from corrugated cardboard to molded plastic to, a kind of a shag material. So we had all sorts of different ways to explore, ways to sit. So it gave the artist creative license as well to really be inspired by the materials or the shape or even the thought process as they created the mini golf elements. — Rebecca Montpetit

What do we say about Shabana Azmi that hasn't been said before? Whether the movie is good, bad or ridiculous, she is always great! We watched a whopping 7 films for this episode, some parallel, some masala and she was fab in every single one. Beth watched Ankur, Lorie, Lahu Ke Do Rang, and Khoon Ki Pukaar. Pitu watched Arth, Mandi, and Swami. We discuss her nuanced acting, her emotional scenes, her restraint, innate dignity, her power to the people song from Parvarish, her chemistry with her co-stars, her beautiful hair, and her funny hat from Amar Akbar Anthony.

The offseason has been long, but fear not, the 2024 NFL Draft is under two weeks away! Join your hosts Jeremy Kohlman and Korey Karbowsky as they dive into the Steelers frenetic offseason where the franchise has completely overhauled the quarterback room, hired a recently fired NFL head coach to be their new offensive coordinator, traded away one of its premier wide receivers, and added three new defensive starters to help bolster an injury plagued unit from 2023. Then in the aftermath of the free agency frenzy, your hosts discuss the biggest needs that the Steelers didn't address and where they must to turn their attention to in the draft to solidify a team seeking its first playoff win since 2016...and dare I say it, a push towards a seventh Lombardi Trophy. Þórður Snær Júlíusson, ritstjóri Heimildarinnar, var fyrsti gestur Morgunvaktarinnar í dag og við héldum áfram umfjöllun um áformuð kaup Landsbankans á TM. Síðan Þórður var hér síðast hefur bankaráð Landsbankans birt upplýsingar sem stangast á við upplýsingar Bankasýslunnar. Við fjölluðum líka um kaupmátt ráðstöfunartekna sem heldur áfram að dragast saman, og um það hvað það kostar að bjóða sig fram til forseta Íslands. Berlínarspjall var á sínum stað og Arthúr Björgvin Bollason sagði meðal annars frá nýsamþykktum lögum um kannabisneyslu, óbeit atvinnurekenda á AfD flokknum og svo töluðum við svolítið um fótbolta og áhrif gengis þýska landsliðsins á þjóðarsálina. Nokkur ár eru frá því að tekið var upp styrkjakerfi í námslánum hér á landi og nú stendur til að sníða af vankanta sem komið hafa í ljós, samkvæmt nýju frumvarpi. En stúdentar og fleiri hafa gagnrýnt frumvarpið, ekki síst vegna þess hversu litlu á að breyta. Stúdentaráð Háskóla Íslands hefur sérstaklega lýst yfir vonbrigðum yfir því hvernig staðið er að málum. Rakel Anna Boulter, forseti Stúdentaráðs HÍ, og Gísli Laufeyjarson Höskuldsson lánasjóðsfulltrúi, komu til okkar. Tónlist: Whiteman, Paul - Mississippi Mud. Brimkló - Herbergið mitt. Reinhard Mey - Über den Wolken. Steve Miller Band - The Joker (bonus track wav).

Why do I love you? - Garcia, Whiting. From heaven to earth - Ólafur Jónsson Tónlistarm., Björn Thoroddsen, Stórsveit Reykjavíkur, Ólafur Jónsson, Gillis, Richard.

February 12, 2024 - Season 14, Episode 89 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to recapping Super Bowl LVIII that took place on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada and resulted in the Kansas City Chiefs being crowned World Champions again after beating the San Francisco 49ers. We discuss several aspects of that game and main takeaways from it with offseason now officially being underway. How important is the quarterback position in the NFL and especially when it comes to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the talent that he was surrounded by in 2023? We relate that topic to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the outlook for them at the quarterback position heading into the offseason. On Sunday morning there was a national media report concerning veteran quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Ryan Tannehill. We break down those specu-reports and talk a little bit about contractual value when it comes to each player. Last week, Steelers team president Art Rooney II made some additional comments about the team potentially trading for a quarterback this offseason that Alex and I failed to recap during the Friday episode, so we make sure to rewind and do that in the Monday show. We also discuss what former Steelers DC Dick LeBeau told our own Scott Brown about Arthur Smith, the team's new offensive coordinator. Alex has now looked deeper into new Steelers QB coach Tom Arth since his hiring last week, so we go over what he now knows about him. We discuss what Arth brings to the Steelers quarterback room moving forward. Will the Steelers win another Super Bowl in the next 15 years? We briefly hit that topic during this show. We also go over the early Super Bowl odds for the 2024 season in relation to the Steelers. Several other minor topics not noted are also discussed in this 78-minute episode and we end it by answering several questions that we received from listeners of the show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Við huguðum að Grindvíkingum í þætti dagsins. Ásrún Helga Kristinsdóttir, forseti bæjarstjórnar Grindavíkur, ræddi við okkur. Hún er ein þeirra sem fór inn í bæinn í gær til að sækja eigur sínar. Hún sagði frá erfiðu ástandi á mörgum vígstöðum, mörgum finnist sem þokist of hægt í því að leysa úr málefnum bæjarbúa. Í Berlínarspjalli sagði Arthúr Björgvin Bollason okkur meðal annars frá tíðindum sem bárust út um Þýskaland um helgina, þess efnis að eftir tvö ár er von á nýjum líftæknilyfjum við krabbameini. Fyrirtækið Biontech hefur þróað þessi nýju lyf en það var í fararbroddi við þróun bóluefnis gegn covid-19 á sínum tíma. Þórður Snær Júlíusson, ritstjóri Heimildarinnar rýndi í afkomu nokkurra fyrirtækja á síðasta ári, sagði frá nýju greiðslukerfi sem Seðlabankinn er með í smíðum og frá þróun á íbúðamarkaði. Tónlist: Melanie - Pebbles in the sand. Melanie - Brand new key. Melanie, Hawkins, Edwin Singers - Lay down (candles in the rain).
The long and winding road - Bítlarnir, January - Tríó Sunnu Gunnlaugs, Lauf sem fýkur - Anna Pálína Árnadóttir, Moonlight shadow - Mike Oldfield.
Tónlist: Diamond, Neil - Ain't no sunshine. Sigrún Hjálmtýsdóttir - Valdi skafari. Sigrún Hjálmtýsdóttir - Landsíma-Lína. Kaufmann, Jonas - Con te partiró. Beatles, The - Here comes the sun.

Photographer Hélène Amouzou, and curator Bindi Vora, capture the in/visibility of refugees and asylum seekers in Europe, moving between 21st century Togo and Belgium in a series of haunting autoportraits. Born in Togo, and now based in Belgium, Hélène Amouzou's self-portraits consider how migration has shaped her identity. Her blurred, ghostly figure, set against suitcases, and the peeling wallpaper of a destitute attic, suggests at the sense of in/visibility, and the particular experiences of women trapped in domestic spaces. These photographs, created during a period where she was seeking political asylum, have become documents of her family's two-decade long journey seeking safety and citizenship during the 1990s and 2000s. As the artist's first exhibition in the UK opens at Autograph, she details her practice, and use of long exposures and sweeping motions to suggest continuities between past and present. Hélène shares Togo's perspectives on northern European countries, as informed by colonial histories and myths. Togoland was a ‘protectorate' of the German Empire in West Africa from 1884 to 1914, an area which included the current state of Togo and much of Ghana, and which Europeans had long dubbed ‘the Slave Coast'. During the First World War, it was invaded by British and French forces, and endured military rule by the latter until its independence in 1960. She likens Belgium's location - similarly placed between France and Germany - whilst curator Bindi Vora connects with her own family's experiences of displacement, herself a second-generation Ugandan-Asian migrant with connections to both Kenya and India. Plus, we discuss the impact of this public exhibition on Hélène's private, intimate practice, and what it means to display these works in the context of the British media discourse about ‘migrant crises'. Hélène Amouzou: Voyages runs at Autograph in London until 20 January 2023. Part of JOURNEYS, a series of episodes leading to EMPIRE LINES 100. Welcome back, friends! For this first episode of season 5, Tim sits down with Alison Arth: consultant, leadership coach, and author whose career is dedicated to working with hospitality leaders and teams to get clear on their vision.Tim is currently going through a major career shift – transitioning from his lifelong post as a restaurateur to his burgeoning frozen food business – and he saw Alison as the perfect person to have on the show.Alison certainly knows her stuff. Since graduating from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, she has helped lead over 40 restaurant openings including Michelin-star concepts for Chef Daniel Boulud in New York City, multiple James Beard-nominated restaurants for Chef Gavin Kaysen in Minneapolis, and Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurant in America in 2018, Nyum Bai.Their conversation represents the kind of commiseration that everyone in the restaurant industry needs right now: humor, gentleness, and genuine vulnerability.-Follow Tim on Twitter and Instagram.Follow Alison's ~Salt & Roe~ on Instagram.-Be sure to support Mucci's and Saint Dinette. How about making a reservation soon? You can find Niver Niver Land across all of social media here:Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Facebook-Welcome to Niver Niver Land: a podcast that addresses massive change in the restaurant industry. The show is hosted by award-winning restaurateur Tim Niver – a local legend of Minnesota's Twin Cities – known for his involvement with fabled spots like Aquavit, Town Talk Diner, and Strip Club Meat & Fish. Today, he runs Saint Dinette and Mucci's Italian in St. Paul.Tim sees a major problem with restaurant industry dialogue: there is a lack of discussion about the ongoing, unprecedented change. Many of those who work in the industry are still trying to wrap their heads around what has happened over the last two years.Today, Tim is ready to talk about these things – through his trademark wit and foolishness – so that we can better appreciate and preserve the cultural importance of restaurants.
Kshetra or the phenomenal world is constituted by 24 elements. These are Prakriti, Mahatattvam or cosmic intelligence, Ahamkara or ego-sense, the mind, the five senses of perception, the five senses of action, the five subtle elements and the five gross elements. The sixth verse adds seven other elements to kshetra - desire, hatred, pleasure, pain, body, intelligence and fortitude. With these, we live in this phenomenal world.Within this material world is the divine spark, Kshetrajna. It is immanent in every being. All problems in the world arise because we identify ourselves with the kshetra. The one who identifies himself as kshetrajna, as distinct from the field, he is able to understand the impermanent nature of the world and its problems. In the 13th verse, Lord Krishna says: “I am now going to teach you that supreme truth, which alone is to be known, and which alone is to be realized. By realizing that, you will become immortal and realize your deathless dimension. This supreme truth is anadi (beginningless), param (beyond tools of knowledge), and Brahma (all-pervading). It is beyond existence and non-existence.”Atman is beyond the six changes: birth, existence, growth, evolution, degeneration and death. Atman does not come into existence as a pot comes into existence from clay. It is beyond the state of coming into existence. In fact, it is beyond time, space and causation.Atman is param: it cannot be seen or known by the six tools of epistemology. Pratyaksha is perception. Anumana is inference. Shabda is verbal testimony. Upamana is comparison. Arthāpatti is presumption. Anupalabdi is the non-cognition. These are the six pramanas or tools of knowledge in Vedantic epistemology. Atman is beyond these six pramanas. None of these six instruments of knowledge can explain the Reality.Atman is our own true nature and can only be experienced. The purpose of scriptures is to drive the wrong ideas from our mind, so we can experience this truth. We cannot really explain an experience. Even an empirical experience such as the taste of milk cannot be fully explained. One cannot transcend death at the physical level. When we realize our true nature and its immortal dimension, we transcend death. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad has a profound dialogue between Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi on the topic of immortality. To realize this supreme truth, one needs to attain 20 spiritual qualities that are described in verses 7-12. Per Shankaracharya, these characteristics should be acquired by those seeking to strive for spiritual enlightenment However, these same characteristics become second nature for the enlightened person. These characteristics are:(1) Humility – not being too proud of oneself (2) Not pretentious – respects others but does not demand respect from them (3) Non-violence in thoughts, words and deeds, as he instinctively feels spiritual affinity with entire creation (4) Forbearance (5) Uprightness (6) Service mindedness (7) Mental purity (8) Steadiness (9) Self-control – the spiritual energy from his noble actions gives him steadiness and self-control (10) Sense of renunciation towards sense pleasures (11) Absence of egoism (12) Ability to look upon birth, death, sickness and old age as imperfections of this empirical life. (13) Non-attachment (14) Not being obsessively attached to near and dear ones (15) Equanimity of mind in happiness and unhappiness (16) Constant, unwavering devotion to the spiritual ideal (17) Inclination for solitary places (18) Aversion to mundane society (19) Constant reflection of spiritual knowledge (20) Realizing the ultimate purpose of knowledge. When we acquire these spiritual qualities, we transform the whole world into a temple because we see the presence of the divine everywhere. These qualities describe a good human being. The greatness of Gita is that it gives a spiritual dimension to what we normally consider secular. The next few verses describe the all-pervading nature of the divine reality.14th verse: “That Divine Reality has hands, feet, eyes, heads, mouths, ears everywhere.” It is the poet's language to put in words what cannot be put in words, as the absolute reality is indescribable. The poet uses a metaphor in this verse. The meaning is that the divine reality is present everywhere and in everything.15th verse: “It expresses itself through the senses but is beyond the senses. It is unattached to everything, yet it sustains everything. It is beyond all characteristics.”Whatever we do with our mind, and senses of perception and action, is an expression of the divine spark within us. The physical body and mind are only a tool for its manifestation. The senses are able to function because of the presence of this divine spark. Death is the withdrawal of this unseen divine spark from the body.16th verse: “This Supreme Reality is inside and outside of everything, both moving and unmoving. It is so subtle that it cannot be known. It is very far but also very near.”For those who are lost in worldly pursuits, this attainment of the highest truth is far away. For those pure in heart, it is very near.17th verse: “The divine reality is present everywhere and in everything. It is indivisible but appears to be divided.”The extent to which the divine reality manifests within us depends on our own accumulated samskaras and how ready we are for its manifestation.18th verse: “It is the light of all lights; it is beyond darkness of ignorance; it is knowledge, the object of knowledge and the goal of knowledge; it is present as the divine spark everywhere and in everything.”King Janaka asked Sage Yajnavalkya in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad: “Endowed with what light does a person live in this world”. The first answer was sunlight. As each option provided in previous answers was eliminated, subsequent answers were moonlight, agni, and sound. When all four of these options were eliminated, the final answer was Atma-Jyoti, which is in all of us and that is self-revealing. It is the light of all lights - that enables all other lights, such as sunlight, moonlight, and agni to function.Light is an important symbol in Vedanta. It symbolizes enlightenment and knowledge. God, as light or atma-jyoti, is already within us. The revealing power of the senses and mind is borrowed from this atma-jyoti. When we do our spiritual practices with sincerity, compassion and looking upon the whole humanity as one – then our mind becomes pure and this divine light within us reveals itself. When a person identifies with this light, he experiences spiritual freedom, happiness within, and illumined within.19th verse: “I have now explained to you Kshetra and Kshetrajna. I have explained the nature of the empirical world, how to live in this world, acquire spiritual qualities, and realize your own deathless dimension. When you realize this, you transcend death.”
