Tribute to Ronnie Davis, Taste test and other antics!

For episode 60, I was joined by one of the most gregarious, open-hearted and passionate industry influencers I’ve ever met.  As the Business Development Mgr at Party Rental Ltd., Jim McManus is often considered the face of the company, which was actually founded by Michael and Sunny Halperin back in 1972. Jim is the ultimate podcast guest — a totally engaging, knowledgeable and colorful raconteur who knows absolutely everyone in the hospitality industry. And throughout our conversation, with a great deal of humor and animation, this self-described “dot connector” does a wild imitation of Wolfgang Puck, explores the meaning of “visions” and the significance of being “one of us,” the importance of strategic partnerships, the mystery of “the Bite” among the world’s greatest chefs,  the pressure cooker,  intense and stressful nature of special events and hospitality as well as the emotional details of weddings — which are, in the end — simply all about the magic of two people in love. It’s nearly impossible to capture the true essence of a person in one ZOOM conversation, but when it comes to Jim’s ebullience, enthusiasm and pure love for what he does, you come pretty close. From a conference room in the offices of Great Performances Catering, Ronnie takes us from his beginnings as a “third-generation-kosher-caterer” in Philadelphia to producing the legendary party celebrating the publication of Madonna and Steven Meisel’s book, “Sex”, and through twenty years of star-studded “after-parties” for The Grammys, and hundreds of spectacular events around the globe. His is truly the story of a life well-lived.

His neighbors in this western Jamaican town included such future legends as Peter Tosh, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Ronnie Davis of the Itals. At the age of 17, like many aspiring artists, Keith headed to Kingston to find a vehicle for his talents. In 1968, he formed his own band, 'Rocking Horse,' and began playing at local clubs and festivals. After hit singles with Rocking Horse, Keith's wide vocal range  earned him the nickname 'poppin'. 'In 1973 released his first solo single 'Same Thing For Breakfast.' This roots classic marked the beginning of a long and successful recording career, topping the charts in England and Jamaica and selling over 50,000 records.  MACHET is the creation of the Founding members of THE I-TERNALS, DC's original heavyweight dub specialists. This is Dub at its finest. Keith was soon performing at venues in town such as the Regal and the elegant Ward Theater, dubbed ‘the Apollo of Jamaica,' while backed by such notable bands as Inner Circle, Soul Syndicate and the Byron Lee and the Dragonaires.  Damian Rhoden  entered the Red Label Wine Superstar Competition with the original song Who Drink Out the Red Label Wine.Munga developed his versatile style as a prodigy of the 'fireman' Capleton before grabbing the attention of the nation as a solo act. Since releasing his hit single Bad From Wi Born in 2006, Munga has become a choiced artist on, stage shows. His Flippin Rhymes, I Came To Take My Place, Not At All and Earthquake are played at parties and radio stations. His high-pitched Sizzla-like singing style has producers clamouring to voice the artiste who hopes to one day be as prolific as a Capleton, Sizzla or Bob Marley. Mr. Easy, Jamaican born, He cites Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Gladys Knight as well as Erik B and Rakim among his major musical influences. Mr. Easy was more than successful. Easy recounts how Sidney Mills, the keyboard player from Steel Pulse, helped him to write "Just Be A Lady". Easy received congratulations and encouragement from people like Patti LaBelle and Quincy Jones. The result of this early success was a record deal with Motown Records and the release of Mr. Easy's first album. 10-11pm In 2012, after 35 year hiatus, The Tennors have reunited ,George Murphy aka “Clive Tennors”, Ronnie Davis and new member Henry “Sadiki” Buckley, Jr. In 1962,  George Murphy aka “Clive Tennors” and Alvin (Cheng Cheng) formed a vocal duet called “The Tennor Twins”. They recorded their first songs for Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label with The Skatalites as session musicians. In 1967, at the invitation of Clive and Prof., Norman Davis joined the group. ‘Sir' Coxone Dodd,record their first released under the “Downbeat” label. Their song “Pressure and Slide” was their first recording as The Tennors and became the biggest hit in Jamaicafor the year 1967
