In today's episode Simone reflects on the COVID 19 pandemic and how it intersects with racism and ableism. They begin by thinking about the Olympics in relation to a lack of COVID mitigations and how we need to have conversations about COVID and racism in relation to workplace inequality. How so many things are connected; with racism, xenophobia, classism and white supremacy at the root of it all.They then consider the way that the first year of the pandemic played out in 2020, drawing on both their lived experience and the studies and data that we now have. Ganz langsam entfaltet sich die Geschichte um die Freundschaft zweier Jungen: Minato, der Ältere, wird beschuldigt, Yori zu mobben und beschuldigt seinen Lehrer, ihn geschlagen zu haben. Was steckt dahinter? Was ist wirklich passiert? Wie einst in RASHOMON wird auch hier die Geschichte nacheinander aus drei Perspektiven erzählt. Zuerst mit den Augen der resoluten, alleinerziehenden Mutter (großartig: Sakura Ando), die ihren Sohn mit aller Kraft verteidigt, dann aus der Perspektive des Lehrers, der mit seinen Stärken und Schwächen unter die Räder des Systems gerät – und schließlich aus der Perspektive der Kinder.Während die ersten beiden Akte einem lang vorkommen können (wenn man noch nicht in Kore-edas Raumzeit angekommen ist), bildet der dritte Akt den bewegenden und dramatischen Höhepunkt der Geschichte. Die beiden Kinderdarsteller Soya Kurokawa und Yota Hiiragi sind herausragend – ihre Figuren wehren sich gegen die Erwachsenen, ihre Vorurteile und Regeln, die dem Glücklichsein im Wege stehen. Kore-eda findet dafür genau die richtigen, oft wunderschönen Bilder. Während die Erwachsenen in unterschiedlicher Weise von Mauern begrenzt sind, laufen am Ende Minato und Yori einfach weiter in ihre Zukunft hinein. But circumstances force her to raise her girlfriend's two daughters: tiny troublemaker Mia (Dzada Selim) and rebellious teen Vanesa (Mia Mustafa). The next film is a new Japanese drama from director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Broker) called Monster, which played earlier this year at the Perth Festival. A single mother (Sakura Ando) demands answers from a school teacher when her son (Soya Kurokawa) begins acting strangely. A fight at school causes even more trouble. This film is also dedicated to musician Ryuichi Sakamoto who composed the film's score before his death in 2023. This guy is big, scaly, has razor sharp teeth, atomic breath and is almost 70 years old. His name? Godzilla and his new movie Godzilla Minus One is creating some major buzz. Made by the original Godzilla movie studio Toho in Japan, Godzilla Minus One starts towards the end of World War II with a kamikaze pilot who's ashamed he couldn't perform his duty. To make things worse, he has a near-death encounter with Godzilla and is one of just a couple survivors of the attack. Yet, to make matters even worse than that, he returns to Tokyo to find his parents have been killed and his country is destroyed.
