Two and a half years ago, towards the end of our NNAFN fundraiser, I announced that I was making a game called Realis. That game is now here—at least in Ashcan form. So, what is Realis? Realis is a cursed orbital sphere of 1,000 mystical moons filled with mystery, magic, and impossible technology. Realis is a game of diceless storytelling, where characters deploy powerful Sentences, which are rewritten over the course of their saga. And it's available right now. This Ashcan version is being published by Possible Worlds Games. This version has 20 Playable Classes and 40 NPC Classes (both of which are less than half of what will be available in the final edition), three Grand Factions, two Example Moons, art by Sam Beck and Oddesque, and layout by Tyler Crumrine. It has some additional design and writing by Friends at the Table's own Jack de Quidt and Janine Hawkins. So, that is Realis. And today, we start our campaign of the game, beginning with this introduction to the game featuring me and Jack, free for all listeners of Friends at the Table. Then, tomorrow, all $5 members of our Patreon will get access to the character creation for our ongoing, Patreon-exclusive Realis campaign—and will receive a new episode every week for the first couple of months, as we catch up with our overdue Patreon episodes. And guess what: The whole first arc of that campaign will also be free, available here in this feed, just one week behind the Patreon release. Once that's over, we'll begin our next full, main feed season, Perpetua, where we'll be playing Fabula Ultima. We've already begun recording that, too, and it's been a blast. I can't wait for y'all to hear what we've been cooking up. (Oh, and definitely go listen to Media Club Plus. We're headed into the most exciting and dramatic part of the Chimera Ant Arc, and now is the best time to catch up with us!) Thanks as always for your support. -Austin Hosted by Austin Walker (@austinwalker on bluesky) Featuring Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal on bluesky) Produced by Ali Acampora Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Cover Art by by Oddesque With thanks to Amelia Renee, Arthur B., Bill Kaszubski, Cassie Jones, Clark, DB, Daniel Laloggia, Diana Crowley, Edwin Adelsberger, Emrys, Greg Cobb, Ian O'Dea, Ian Urbina, Irina A., Jack Shirai, Jake Strang, Katie Diekhaus, Ken George, Konisforce, Kristina Harris Esq, L Tantivy, Lawson Coleman, Mark Conner, Mike & Ruby, Muna A, Nat Knight, Nich Maragos, Olive Perry, Quinn Pollock, Robert Lasica, Shawn Drape, Shawn Hall, Summer Rose, TeganEden, Thomas Whitney, Voi, chocoube, deepFlaw, fen, & weakmint, This episode was made with support from listeners like you! After the mysterious suicide of their friend, Sloane, Elliott, Cameron, and Ana are just trying to get through the rest of high school. They live in Loving, Ohio—a town built around The Chorus, a new age cult with members firmly planted in positions of power and influence throughout the community. Through their grief a series of murders throw these friends into a mystery connected to everything around them. Sloane and her friends have to escape a roaming murderer, figure out their place in the world, and deal with loss all in the looming shadow of The Chorus. I have been following Matthew Erman's comic career for a while and watching it evolve over time. The themes that have been explored in each of his stories have related in one way or another in some ways but they all feel like they were leading up to Loving, Ohio. I was lucky enough to read the comic last year and have not been able to stop thinking about it since. It's a beautiful horror graphic novel dealing with family, belonging, and understanding the systems on which you can rely. The story itself deals a lot with a cult and such which the author Matthew Erman was in for a bit of his life. We don't get into that too much into this interview because to be honest, I felt it wasn't a topic I felt relevant to our VERY open and honest discussion. We talk about so many things in this interview. Matthew talks very openly about the comics industry in ways that I had never even fathomed to think of point of view wise before. It's a very in depth conversation about shelf space, belonging, and chances. It's an interview that I am very proud of presenting to you that was inspired by a book that I have been comfortable calling the horror comic of the year since year. I can firmly say that Loving, Ohio is still my favorite horror comic of 2024 and on my must-read list for anyone looking for a story if they've ever deal with any feelings of loneliness, depression, or not belonging. The art and letters by Sam Beck synchronize so perfectly with the themes and feelings that it seems Matthew Erman was going for to elevate it to an instant classic in my book. I do not do ratings but if I did, this would be a 5 star book. I hope you pick it up and listen to this interview.

In this week's episode of The Comic Section Podcast, the hosts begin with a heartfelt tribute to Roger Corman, the legendary producer and director who dominated the B-movie scene for decades. Known for his prolific output of low-budget horror, science fiction, and crime films, Corman passed away at his home in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 98. The episode then moves on to exciting news from Netflix. The beloved 1996 golf comedy "Happy Gilmore" is getting a sequel, with original star Adam Sandler set to return. The announcement was made during Netflix's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Additionally, Netflix has renewed "3 Body Problem," though instead of a traditional Season 2, the streamer is opting for additional episodes to expand the story. In a surprising and thrilling update for Marvel fans, Natasha Lyonne, known for her roles in "Russian Doll" and "Poker Face," is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has been cast in Disney's upcoming "The Fantastic Four" reboot, although her specific role remains undisclosed. The podcast features a special phone interview with Sam Beck, a talented writer and illustrator from Toronto, Canada. Sam is the creative force behind the fantasy trilogy "Verse," which will conclude with the release of the final book in August 2024. Starting as a web-comic, "Verse" gained substantial readership and support, leading to a successful Kickstarter campaign and subsequent publication by Vault Comics. Sam shares insights into her unique world-building process and the inspiration she draws from enchanting landscapes. In the coming soon/preview segment, the hosts preview trailers for the upcoming Dune prequel, "Dune: Prophecy," which will be streaming on Max this fall, and the highly anticipated movie adaptation of "Wicked," set to hit theaters in Thanksgiving 2024. Listeners are encouraged to tune in for all these updates, previews, and the exclusive interview with Sam Beck, as the hosts cover an exciting array of topics in this week's episode of The Comic Section Podcast.

Hey all, the CDB Crew is back with a regular episode after our short break. For this special episode, Darci chose the recently released, first volume of Verse by Sam Beck, published by Vault Comics on the Wonderbound imprint. If you are familiar with Beck's previous works, it will not come as a surprise about how great a read this is and how gorgeous it looks. We hope that we can convince you to pick up this under-the-radar masterpiece. That's not all that makes this episode special. We are introducing a new format all-together: we are adding in a new, ongoing segment, DIY Corner- where we will discuss comics that are being self-published, self-released online, and/or are being Crowd-Funded, while cutting back on our discussions and news segments. Once again, a big purpose of this podcast is to help give notice to comics that might not necessarily get a lot of press or discussion on comic book social media. For the inaugural DIY Corner, we talk about Dirruti: Shadow of the People, Hans Vogel is Dead, The Uncontrollable Wreck-Lass!, and Kardiakía: Stories of Representation: Queer Love and Fat Bodies. We also talk about Dune: A Whisper of Caladan Seas #1 by Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, Jakub Rebelka, and Ed Dukeshire (BOOM); The Night Mother by Melanie Gillman; and A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #1 by Rick Remender, André Lima Araújo, Chris O'Halloran, and Rus Wooton (Image) The Night Mother can be found here: https://melgillman.tumblr.com/post/664267309279576064/the-night-mother DIY Corner: Dirruti: Shadow of the People: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/autonomouscollective/durruti-shadow-of-the-people Hans Vogel is Dead: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/castironbooks/hans-vogel-is-dead-volume-i The Uncontrollable Wreck-Lass!: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/amoralstingray5/the-uncontrollable-wreck-lass?ref=profile_saved_projects_live Kardiakía Stories of Representation: Queer Love and Fat Bodies: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ehmautoproduzioni/kardiakia?ref=discovery_category Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian, Carrie and Darci which covers the world of Independent Comics. Carrie, Darci, and Brian (CDB) are back with another episode of the Comics Deserve Better (CDB) Podcast with Brian's choice this week, the first volume of Princeless. The Crew are all under the weather this episode and apparently so was Zoom as there were heaps of issues in regards to recording, but a great episode was still created to talk about a great book! Also, is it intentional or coincidental that the podcast has the same initials as the first names of the three hosts? The CDB Crew will never tell! No discussion this week due to the afore mentioned illnesses but it's a solid episode nonetheless with some great tangents about Covid and Booster Gold to name a few. Other books discussed this episode are Cinnamon #1 by Victoria Douglas (Behemoth); Graveneye by Sloane Leong and Anna Bowles (TKO); and Verse Book 1 by Sam Beck (Wonderbound). This Archipelago of some 340 coral and volcanic islands lies in an isolated location of the South Pacific, 400 miles North of New Guinea and, reputed to be THE top scuba diving spot in the world, is encircled by a huge barrier reef system. Sam Beck, graduate of Wesleyan University, a young New Yorker and Palauan has spent many childhood holidays on the island. Here he takes us along on his dream holiday, swimming in a clear blue lake alongside friendly jellyfish.
Within this podcast, Jared Fink and Sam Beck interview Meredith Sherlin about her career and the steps that led her to where she is today. Currently, Merideth is the Director of Admissions, at North Dakota State University. Meredith’s journey begins in Glenwood, Minnesota. Thought her time there, she found she had a passion for writing. Although still uncertain as to a specified career path, Meredith went on to continue her education at North Dakota State University. Within her time as a Bison, Meredith discovered more about herself as well as what it takes to be successful in both her education as well as a career. Meredith also was given a opportunity to write for a small newspaper within NDSU. Which was a major turning point in her life that aided in her career path. Upon graduation, Meredith had a transitional time that she thought was a major influence in how she ended back at North Dakota State University. Within the podcast, we take a deeper look into the steps Meredith took that helped guide her to where she is today. Meredith experienced a similar situation in which some college students find theirselves in today. Some of the topics within this podcast include cover motivation, the work environment, as well as how important it is to never turn a opportunity down. We encourage all to listen to our podcast. We feel as though the topics covered within the podcast could be beneficial to any college student today.

Sam Beck is certainly a comic artist to watch for these days, as her career coalesces to its first major apex. At the time of this episode, Songs for the Dead – the comic she draws for writers and past Speech Bubble guests Andrea Fort and Michael Christopher Heron – has just been picked up by publisher Vault Comics and is now available at comic shops everywhere. Her work is also featured in the 2018 edition of the Toronto Comics Anthology, Osgoode as Gold, she also contributed a story to the upcoming Wayward Sisters Anthology and that's just for starters. She also writes and draws her own fantasy webcomic called Verse and another project based on Greek mythology called Cadmus from Antarctic Press. On this episode, she talks about how role-playing games influence her comics work, what draws her to fantasy narratives in the first place and how Neopets – a place where users can own and raise virtual pets – fostered her creativity and storytelling abilities. Hosts Justin and Jacob talk with writers Andrea Fort, Michael Christopher Heron and artist Sam Beck about the relaunch of their comic series Songs For The Dead, all about a misunderstood necromancer. We talk the book, switching to a publisher, and their favourite RPG's. (We picked up a phantom radio frequency so apologies for the mysterious classical piano and other unwanted sounds.) Originally broadcast on CJRU1280 AM in Toronto. Produced by Jacob Dubé.
In this three-part interview, we talk to Chas! Pangburn, Deniz Camp, and Sam Beck, the winners from each category of our 2017 competition. They open up about their lives as up-and-coming comic creators. The ups and down, the rejections, and the light at the end of the tunnel. But her creator owned comic, Rose (Image Comics) is a reflection of her life long love for fantasy stories. She tells us about working with different publishers and different artists, and what it's like being married to a fellow comic creator.
