Transcending Comics had our first ever live show at Flame Con 2024! We were lucky enough to be joined by some incredible panelists, including Maia Kobabe (Gender Queer: A Memoir), Kim Wang (Of Thunder & Lightning), Ben Kahn (Elle Campbell Wins Their Weekend, Renegade Rule), and Daniel Falco (Transphoria)! We absolutely loved the input from each of our panelists, and the audience had some great questions for the creators. We also want to give a special shoutout to our friend Sadie for capturing and editing the footage of this event, she even managed to good audio of the audience questions, which we couldn't have managed without her! Stay tuned for more from our trip to Flame Con!   Music: Intro: A Little Soul by Carlsin Outro: You've Been Starrin by Carlsin Check out more of his music on Carlsin.com

Renegade graduate Syrita Steib is running for US Senate in the state of Louisiana. If elected, she will be the first black women to ever hold that position. Her story is remarkable. She grew up in a small rural town surrounded by sugar cane, spent 10 years in prison and has successfully created, and passed, legislation that is changing the narrative for many people. In this discussion with Amy Jo, Syrita talks about her trauma that led her to prison and the moments since that have motivated her down the current path she is on. She details the lack of access to bare necessities she faced after incarceration. Syrita has taken Renegade Rule #3 (turn adversity into an asset) to a whole new level as she has leveraged adversity over and over again. Syrita has always been a fighter and her mindset is that the only way is forward. Syrita's resilience and fierce commitment to doing what she sets out to do is apparent. She has started the non profit, Operation Restoration, passed Louisiana Act 276 which banned a box on college application that asked about previous felonies for the purpose of admission, expanded this to 6 different states, received a full presidential pardon and much more. She does all of this by not by looking at challenges in totality, but instead tackling the process step by step. Syrita needs help now. Her main ask is for people to to talk about the issues she brings up in this episode. Spread awareness. Louisiana is the only state with jungle primaries - an election in which all candidates for elected office run in the same primary regardless of political party - so November 8th is the primary election. Early voting is October 25th. Syrita is the only woman in the race as well as the only one with experience creating and passing policy successfully. A big thanks to Syrita for sharing her story. Welcome to the LI Law Podcast.  We feature legal issues and developments which affect Long Island residents and business owners.  I am your host, Zehava Schechter. Our guest on this 62nd episode is Rachel Silverstein, a 2020 Touro Law Center graduate and GLAAD-nominated comic book writer. During law school, Rachel received the Exemplary Contributions to the Quality of Student Life Award at graduation. She was the president of the LGBT+ law society, served as teaching assistant for legal writing classes, and managed public relations for the intellectual property law society. Prior to law school, Rachel received her bachelor's degree in geology at College of Charleston and her master's degree in geoscience with a concentration in extinct elephant paleontology at East Tennessee State University. Her first co-written graphic novel, Renegade Rule, was published by Dark Horse Comics in 2021.  Rachel's love of comic books began in middle school.  She merged her affinity for comic books with that of the law in law school by publishing her first law review article about obscenity laws as they relate to comic books.  It is called The Law of Obscenity in Comic Books and can be downloaded through the Touro Law Review digital commons here: "Obscenity in Comic Books" by Rachel Silverstein (tourolaw.edu). Her second review article discussed publicity laws as they relate to persons of interest or celebrities in comic books.  It is called Comic Books, the First Amendment, and the “Best Test” for Right of Publicity Issues and can be downloaded through the Touro Law Review digital commons here: https://digitalcommons.tourolaw.edu/lawreview/vol36/iss4/19/. So, we definitely see a trend here in relation to comic books. Our topic of discussion is: All about comic books…and the law.  If you want to contact Rachel Silverstein directly, her e-mail address is:  RachelCSilverstein@gmail.com. You're having ok day at school but then you go outside to check on your school bunny cages and all of the bunnies are dead but then you discover that there's one alive and he's hiding under the mulch in the cage but when you take him out to protect him the local gang that killed the bunnies shows back up and threatens to kill you if you don't give them the bunny to kill and they hit you with a bike chain and your girlfriend shows up to break them up and put a bandage on you? But then you're walking home together and she wants to smooch you but then your old friend that you haven't seen in a decade pops up in the middle of the forest wearing a trenchcoat and sunglasses and says something happened to his dad and he needs you to come with him, but when your girlfriend tries to come to he threatens her with a knife and says there are no girls aloud? Then he takes you to the spooky castle where he lives and tells you how his dad tried to kill him and then set himself on fire and he makes you wear a giant skull helmet that shows you the history of a demon dimension and then while you guys are going to the other room where all of his records are you get attacked by a bunch of demons with tentacles coming out of their boobs and they chase you out to his car but then when you get into the car the car develops a vagina with teeth that tries to eat you so you have to shoot the car and then walk back to the creepy castle where he shows you his elevator to his underground 80's cocaine club full of half naked dancing people and tells you the only way to become a demon is to let yourself go and dance with hot naked women, but as soon as you start to do that he breaks a bottle and starts stabbing people and then they turn into demons, so in order to save him you have to fuse with a demon and you become some sort of sexy half demon superhero that has hooves and claws and murders all the demons that used to be hot naked women and suddenly you've murdered everyone in the hot underground 80s cocaine club except your friend who is okay?HAS THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU? “One of the goals of Renegade Rule was to present a book and world that allows for queer joy” - Ben Kahn “The closer it is to trope-y fan fiction the more I like it”  - Rachel Silverstein Meet the writers of a new original graphic novel published by Dark Horse, Renegade Rule! "The Manhattan Mist have beaten the odds to land themselves in the national championships for Renegade Rule, one of the hottest virtual reality games in existence. But they're in for competition fiercer then they ever imagined, and one team member's entire future could be at stake. Four queer female friends will have to play harder than ever against self-doubt, infighting, romantic distraction, and a slew of other world-class teams if they hope to become champions. From Ignatz-nominated writer Ben Kahn, debut author Rachel Silverstein, and artist Sam Beck is a celebration of friendship, competition, queer identity, and the insane things we do for the things and people we love."
