Former Hollywood executive and tech entrepreneur Steven Puri shares how his journey from coding to filmmaking inspired Sukha, a platform recreating the "coffee shop effect" for remote workers. Drawing from film industry cycles and startup failures, Puri reveals why tenacity outweighs talent, how distractions require 22 minutes to recover from, and why human connection drives both successful blockbusters and productivity tools. His practical insights offer a refreshing approach to finding focus and fulfillment in our distracted digital world.RetryClaude can make mistakes. Please double-check responses.5 Key Insights:1. Productivity increases when working alongside others without direct interaction, inspiring Sukha's design to recreate this coffee shop energy virtually.2. The film industry naturally cycles between remote, hybrid, and in-person collaboration, offering valuable lessons for post-pandemic work structures.3. Success comes from unwavering persistence and daily discipline, not superior talent or skill.4. Blockbuster films succeed by understanding the human story beneath the spectacle, just as digital tools must address fundamental human needs.5. Context-switching destroys flow state, requiring 15-22 minutes to regain focus after each interruption.About Steven PuriSteven Puri — a rare blend of Hollywood storyteller, tech entrepreneur, and remote work pioneer. From producing blockbusters like Independence Day and Star Trek to building platforms that help people focus and connect in the digital age, Steven's journey spans visual effects, studio leadership, and startups like Centered and The Sukha Company. He's spent his life at the intersection of creativity and productivity, and today, we explore what drives him to keep reimagining how we work and live.Timestamps00:02:00 - 00:03:38 How a Software Engineer Became a Studio Executive00:03:38 - 00:09:59 What I Learned from the Leaders in Tech Program00:09:59 - 00:15:27 Learnings from the Film Industry00:15:27 - 00:19:38 Film Industry Lessons for Office Ecosystems00:19:38 - 00:22:50 The Story Behind Sukha Platform00:22:50 - 00:25:17 Building Mastery and Excellence00:25:17 - 00:27:53 Is Discipline Actually Real in Creative Fields00:27:53 - 00:30:07 How Sukha Helps Build Tenacity00:30:07 - 00:31:02 What Lenny Loves About Sukha00:31:02 - 00:33:25 What Distraction Does to Your Performance00:33:25 - 00:43:11 Is Slack Helping or Hurting Productivity00:43:11 - 00:45:28 Taking Sukha to Large Organizations00:45:28 - 00:47:55 Happiness, Fulfillment and Sukha00:47:55 - 00:49:10 What Success Means to Steven Puri00:49:10 - 00:50:40 The Best Advice I've Ever Received00:50:40 - 00:51:23 What Work-Life Balance Means to Me00:51:23 - 00:53:29 Intensity and Work-Life Balance00:53:29 - 00:54:48 How to Stop Being Distracted00:54:48 - 00:56:00 What AI Does to Distraction00:56:00 - 00:59:09 My Advice to College Students00:59:09 - 01:01:44 What Failure Taught MeSelected Links and Show Notes: https://www.contraminds.comSubscribe to our Weekly Newsletter: https://blog.contraminds.comThis episode was made possible by the great folks at https://goaffortless.ai.Effortless has been designed to be user-friendly, aiding you in your journey to streamline financial tasks. With the help of funnels and automation, Knorish has to date enabled more than 17000 academies to launch and go online. And this is just the beginning. How did Kinner and Knorish get here? Raghu was a network engineer working for a telecommunications networking firm. Network engineering can be exciting and yet boring at the same time depending upon which part of the industry you worked in. It was in this boring industry that Raghu had an epiphany to start a consumer oriented business and thus the business of home improvement was born. That is when he hit upon the idea of freeing blue blooded professionals to experience the same rewarding path he had taken thru CrewScale. But the path was anything but straight. How did he scale CrewScale to more than 60K freelancers around the world? It's all in here.

“Be an Asker, not a Guesser.”A serial entrepreneur and startup adviser on a mission to change today's perception of millennial consumer behavior, Chino Lex is the founder and CEO of Keyring, the cable bundle of the subscription generation. With savings from his carpet-cleaning job at the young age of 19, he decided to leave college one day after freshmen orientation to start and bootstrap his first company. It published over 180 iOS apps and over 50 reached Apple's Top Charts, amassing over 5 million downloads, resulting in an acquisition. Chino’s advice for attracting top talent when you can’t pay “Google/Microsoft” salaries is impactful and valuable for startup founders.Chino also goes deep into what his parents said when he dropped out of college during Freshman Orientation, how he found developers for his first few app companies, proving an app’s value proposition, finding startup support while living in a desert for startups, how the concept for Keyring came about, raising capital vs. bootstrapping, and a list of books that should be in every founders “to be read” pile. Our guest, Anne-Fleur Andrle, is the co-founder of Jack and Ferdi, a companion application that helps travelers identify what's most authentic about a destination while offering innovative ways to the user to give back to the local community. This Bleisure App also provides data on opportunities to have a positive impact while on the road (run and walk itineraries, indigenous music, and curated local charities to give back to), while not forgetting the primary reason for the business trip...conducting business. The app also offers data on local business etiquette, learning opportunities, and great work/meeting spaces. This well-rounded app will help business travelers combine business and leisure travel and adopt the growing bleisure travel lifestyle. Anne-Fleur graduated from UTC – a French University - as an engineer with a double major in biomechanics and scientific communication. She pursued her education at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo with a focus on cardiac regeneration and biomedical engineering. And she was the first woman to graduate from the Biomedical Engineering department of the Graduate School. A Dual citizen of France and America, Anne-Fleur never misses an opportunity to explore the world - starting with her own neighborhood.A newborn baby and a newborn business - this is an exciting startup story! Please follow and connect with Anne-Fleur and her beautiful business Jack and Ferdi here:Website: https://www.jackandferdi.com/Twitter: @afandrle and @jackandferdiLinkedIn: Anne-Fleur Andrle https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-fleur-andrle/ and Jack and Ferdi https://www.linkedin.com/company/jack-n-ferdi/Instagram: Jack and Ferdi https://www.instagram.com/jackandferdi/ and Anne-Fleur https://www.instagram.com/afandrle/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jackandferdi/If you need startup mentoring – please visit my website, http://andelyons.com where you’ll find all the ways I can add value to your startup journey: strategy calls, pitch deck and one page business snapshot coaching, WBENC application support for women business owners - I’d be honored to mentor you through whatever you’re going through – so please don’t hesitate to reach out.If you’d like to receive an alert whenever I post a new episode, please follow me on Spreaker, Stitcher, iTunes, Spotify or Google Podcasts… and let’s connect on social media!Listeners - thank you so much for tuning in - I am genuinely grateful for your time and presence. Stay strong, stay focused – and please remember – you’ve got this – Cheers!Ande ♥Anne-Fleur Andrle BioFrench born and coming from Brittany, I am a bold female entrepreneur and living an extraordinary life. Extraordinary does not mean rich, luxurious or doing nothing but drinking mojitos on an exotic beach. In my book, extraordinary means daring to live life the way I intend to, which means being free and humble, ambitious and bold, respectful of my peers and environment as well as curious to learn anytime I have the opportunity.I am convinced it is our responsibility as entrepreneurs to give back to our community and for social impact to be deeply rooted in the DNA of our enterprises. This is one of the reasons why we incorporated Jack and Ferdi as a PBC (Public Benefit Corporation). I am a person of many passions and I believe their common themes are freedom and creation. What I truly love doing is traveling, being in, on or near the water, cooking, writing and reading (especially comics and graphic novels). My passion for travel and discovery, and certainly my personal experience as a business traveler, lead me to cofound Jack and Ferdi in 2016. The goal of this one-of-a-kind mobile app was to close the cultural gap in business travel and to provide business travelers with a real tool to maintain work-life balance on the road. Closing the cultural gap on business travel was a problem I often faced during my own experiences.Prior to this, I created the North American division of AMA XpertEye (a Ubisoft sister company), established it in Cambridge, MA and dedicated myself to its success as its Executive Director.I graduated from UTC (France) as an engineer with a double major in Biomechanics and Scientific Communication. I continued my education at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo, NY with a focus on cardiac regeneration and biomedical engineering. I was the first woman to obtain a graduate degree from the Biomedical Engineering Department.I worked in R&D in the field of regenerative medicine successively with both L’Oréal and INSERM (aka French NIH) in Paris before joining Olea Medical in Boston, where I worked as a Research and Applications Engineer on stroke and tumor imaging. For several years, I hosted a radio show which I co-created "Les Echos de l’Innovation". Our objective was to publicize science to the greater public and debate about the latest innovations, their impact on society and to create a communication channel for experts from various horizons (from academics to Nobel Prize recipients). In parallel, I have been writing - both in French and in English - pretty much ever since I can remember. I wrote my first novel at age 8, and since then never really stopped. I have been an author for the website and magazine "French Quarter Mag", have had multiple blogs, and worked as a freelance editor, translator and voice-over artist.Dual citizen (French and American), I never miss an opportunity to explore and particularly love being near, on or in the water – whether it is on a catamaran, with my snorkel or scuba gear. I love to explore the world - starting with my own neighborhood.
You will love this delicious conversation with Laura Mignott, CEO and Founder of DFlash, a New York-based, experience communications agency! While attending the Chole Capital Boston Women Investors Forum a few weeks ago, I was so impressed by how well this extraordinary event was run and produced, I asked Chloe Capital’s partner, Kate Cartini, "who made this amazing event happen?!" She pointed across the room to a glowing powerhouse of a woman and said: Laura Mignott.DFlash creates high impact brand experiences for Fortune 500s like Samsung, Netflix, Amazon, Bose to tech companies, non-profits and trade associations. DFlash creates experiences that make people feel welcome from pop-ups, private dinners, product launches, guerilla stunts to multi-city tours.Laura shares how her business idea happened “by accident” in 2010. She and her co-founder were not happy with the current networking experiences in NYC, so they started their own networking events! They built events they would want to go to - always remembering that if you made a space welcoming, whether you're 18 or 94, folks would feel welcome in their space. That's been the core value from the very beginning and through every one of the 400 plus events since they launched. An introvert at heart Laura shares how networking was a struggle for her. However, she knew it was network or starve, and sure enough - these consistent, warm and welcoming local networking events helped her build long-term client relationships with Fortune 500 companies. Through these events, Laura built trust with these large clients – a key ingredient for a successful relationship marketing campaign.Throughout our conversation, Laura shares actionable advice to help you use relationship marketing to build a local, national and international presence for your startup. If you’re ready to have the best event ever, please visit DFlash’s website to learn more about this amazing event planning and production company. On this episode of Startup Life Show we’re talking about stepping into our authority. How often have you said “Of course I know what I’m doing” ... even though you felt like you had no idea what you were doing?Perhaps you heard a voice in your head say, “You’re an imposter!”This happens to all founders. There is no training for this role. Most newly minted founders have no experience running a company. So it’s easy to feel clueless and uncertain. To help founders overcome the imposter syndrome, I'm sharing a segment from a live video interview I had a few years ago with Blair Glaser, an authority and leadership expert and a dear friend of mine who I often turn to for authority advice. For 17 years Blair Glaser has been helping people and businesses design creative, sustainable, dynamic environments where connection and good work can thrive. She shares her pearls of wisdom for tapping into your personal authority so you can fully show up for you and your business. After all, you are the author of your life. You must learn to stand unaplogetically in your competence… a space in which a world of possibility is at your command.I know you will enjoy this delicious and impactful conversation!PS: Please visit http://blairglaser.com to download Blair's fabulous and free eBook called:“4 Ways to Step Into Your Authority Now”(even if you’re broke, frustrated or feeling a little hopeless)

Andrew began his career in 2008 at age 19 as a sophomore in college having got himself an internship for an aftermarket auto parts manufacturer.
