Here is some advice based on my experience. Be Nice The AI alignment community is pretty small. If you are an ass, everybody will know that you are an ass. The same holds to a lesser extent for being nice. When I was visiting Edinburgh to attend a talk by David Krueger, there were several people there, that I had first met at Lightcone. When I was visiting Trajan House, the same thing happened. You never know when you might be talking to a grantmaker over dinner. Epistemic status: I did not actually behave like an ass. I expect this to be true, based on how many people I ran into that I've seen before, in different parts of the world. Use Lunch and Dinner at Lightcone During MATS 2.0 lunch and dinner were both served at Lightcone every day of the week. There were always many cool people around, and the conversations were unusually insightful. My favorite heuristic is to just join whatever conversation John is in. I am pretty sure that at least 15% of the value of SERI MATS came from eating lunch and dinner at Lightcone. Probably much more than that. Epistemic status: It feels like this was very useful, but it is hard to quantify. Take care of yourself At the beginning of SERI MATS, there were many social events (mostly just general Berkeley EA/Rationalist events). They were all happening pretty late. For some reason, I need to sleep 10:30 to 12:00 hours every day or I will be tired. My team was meeting at 10:00 every day. For the first 3 weeks, I was basically sleep-deprived almost every day. John's workshops are pretty great, and being sleep-deprived during them destroyed probably more than 20% of the value. That being said, at least one of the socials was high-value, and it was probably worth the cost. The worst thing was that I got used to being sleep-deprived. I sleep-deprived myself, even when there were no socials happening. I made similar mistakes with doing sports and eating healthily. Somehow it's hard to keep up all the good habits when you change your environment. Epistemic status: It's hard to evaluate the counterfactual where I was not sleep-deprived. I estimate I could have gotten 5-35% more value by not making the mistakes I listed. Learn to detach yourself from your ideas Check out this comment. Be Agentic If something doesn't fit right, try to fix it. Do you have a crazy idea about how to improve the office? Ask, or implement it yourself (after getting permission)! (The Lightcone ops team is very competent and cool. John had a loft bed in his office when I was there. I am not sure about the situation in the new SERI MATS offices.) Choose how you spend your time. If you are in a conversation, notice when you would rather do something else. I recommend that you act on this feeling. Get back to work, join that other discussion that seems more interesting, or do whatever else seems higher value. I think being able to do this is great. Building up this skill is probably easier when talking to rationalists. They won't punish you for this kind of initiative. In general, being agentic seems highly related to making sure that you thought all your high-value thoughts. I recommend sitting down for at least 5 minutes by the clock every day, and trying to come up with high-value directions to think in. The second step is then to always do what you think is best. Which is not easy. Think about AI alignment from scratch Reading somebodies work is different from discovering the underlying insights for yourself. Many details will be omitted in a write-up. Welcome To Episode #125 of the Amazon FBA Private Label Show Podcast! In this episode I share my opinions and thoughts on some of the recent Amazon seller account suspensions and the use of Amazon launch services.  Listen to this Amazon FBA Podcast! [powerpress] My Thoughts on the Amazon Account Suspensions and Launch Services - EP125 Recently you may have heard of some reports going around about sellers getting their Amazon accounts suspended by Amazon. It appears that some of these violations were from rank manipulation from the use of Amazon launch services. In this podcast I share my thoughts and opinions on the subject and I also share my advice on launching products on Amazon in the current climate.  WHAT I THINK: I think Amazon is looking to detect larger scale manipulation and sometimes smaller sellers get caught up in the web. I would however make sure you aren't doing anything at scale to show up on Amazon's radar. If your product has tons of deeply discounted sales attached to it now I think that sends up red flags to Amazon. It's best if things appear natural to Amazon so suddenly getting 100 reviews on a brand new product may not look natural to Amazon and could lead to issues with your ASIN and account.  If you are using an Amazon launch service and are still having great results with getting your product rank then proceed with caution going forward. Ultimately just be safe so you can protect your account from any issues.  IF YOU WANT TO USE AMAZON LAUNCH SERVICES:  Contact the site or service and ask them about their process for launching products Who are their buyers? How do they distribute your links? How do they distribute your codes? If the Amazon launch service says they are within Amazon TOS then take that with a grain of salt.  They may have been compliant in the past but not anymore as Amazon changes their system and guidelines.  Try to avoid launching to professional freebie deal seekers. Ultimately you are responsible for your account activity  MY ADVICE:  I think the best route forward for any Amazon seller is to build your own audience that you can launch product to. That way you control everything and you are building a real asset that you can keep using again and again.  You should either be building your own e-mail list or ManyChat list. My Advice to a Friend Who Is Dealing with Haters I got a message from a friend with a YouTube channel. I'm not going to mention his name—this situation could apply to just about anyone—but he sent me a message saying, “Hey, my YouTube channel is starting to grow. I've got a bunch of followers and subscribers who love me. But I'm also getting hated on all the time, and people have been making up fake stories about me and lies and trying to ruin my reputation. What should I do? I'm a nice guy. I just don't know how to handle this. Click To Watch This Video On YouTube... Crabs in a Bucket From my experience, when you start becoming successful, when you begin to stand out from the crowd and move ahead, people start throwing shade your way. They start taking shots at you. It's kind of like the crabs-in-a-bucket mentality. If you have a whole bunch of crabs in a bucket and one tries to crawl out, what happens? The crabs will pull the other crab down because they don't want that crap to escape. The same thing happens when you start to have success and you're surrounding yourself with the wrong people. Now, if you have good friends and people who truly love you and respect you, they typically won't do this. But sometimes even people who love and care for you will hate on you or even subconsciously take shots at you to bring you down; your success is beginning to make them uncomfortable. People will hate on you, throw shade your way, and try to bring you down because your success is a reflection of what they're not doing. It's a reflection of their laziness, their inability to do what needs to be done to become successful, to take action, to continue learning and growing and pushing themselves forward. When they see you being successful, they think to themselves, “If I want to be perceived as successful as this person, I can invest in myself, grow, build, learn, focus on self- development, and take massive action. But, ugh, that seems like a lot of hard work I probably can't do even if I tried. The easier option is to throw rocks at this person's empire. I'll light dynamite under it, explode it, and take it down.” And that seems like the easier way for them to appear that they're better than you. The Evil of Egos Many people are driven by ego. They don't like when you seem to be getting ahead in life. And the fastest way for them to take you down is to hate on you; they will try to ruin your reputation, make up stories, and gossip. I've dealt with this in my life. People have made up complete lies and stories that are even true pretty much to try to destroy me or take me down. That's just what happens. It can be a nasty world out there; it can be brutal. So how do you handle this? Well, you've got to realize one thing. You can only control your actions. You can't control what other people are going to say. You just can't. So as much as it hurts, we all want everyone to like us, but it's just not going to happen. You just can't control what other people say, think, or believe. Do What You've Been Doing to Get Ahead Instead focus your time and your efforts and your mind on doing what you've been doing to become successful. Focus on the things that you have been doing that have allowed you to become successful. If you are having success, then you surely have certain patterns in your life, certain action steps that you take that have helped you be successful. Maybe it's going to the gym consistently; maybe it's spending an hour meditating or reading or learning or networking or masterminding or just listing ten items a day. You've done something right, and that makes you really special. If you're having success and getting ahead in life and people are hating on you, you're being successful because you're an amazing person. Do not let the haters make you veer off course. If you're getting the results, keep doing what you're doing.

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0181 And It Will Be About Annual Taxes and Job Costing from the view of The Contractor The first question is why doesn’t the tax accountant help me with Job Costing? The reason is they are Tax Accountants, not Construction Accountants. If you say "I want to go to ONE Place to all my answers. Have a dedicated person be available whenever I call." You are not likely to find what you are looking for because someone with those skills will cost you several hundred dollars an hour. Maybe you think they are The Accountants and they should know the answers. They are just keeping it a secret. Maybe they don’t know what they are doing, and I need to get a new tax accountant. My Advice is Stop, take a deep breath. Is your tax accountant doing a good job with your annual taxes? If the answer is YES. Please keep them, they are doing what they are supposed to do. Annual taxes is like a job site at the end of the project. The Tax Accountant has a “Punch List” with loose ends everywhere, final cleanup of the job site needs to be done everywhere. Think of it as a Residential Project with the Homeowner living there. Everything needs to be gently picked up, clean up, tidied up and look way better than before you came (or better yet; nicer than when the house was brand new) The same thing applies to your taxes. All the numbers are placed on your tax return in a specific order. Think Proposals which can be a summary of what you are doing. Detailed Estimate is the nuts and bolts with subtotals. Nuts and bolts are part of job costing reports, subtotals and totals move to the tax return. Not all of the items you spent money on are actual tax deductions. The tax accountant must be up to date on the latest changes made by Congress and implemented by the Internal Revenue Service. Remember a few years ago when Congress made changes went they met in January. Then next the Internal Revenue Service had to determine how those changes applied to the individual pages on the tax return. Those changes then had to be sent to the software engineers to update all of the tax software. The rule is the first two pages of the annual 1040 are the summary of your, mine and everyone else’s tax return. The balance of the many pages of your tax return is supporting documents and worksheets. Congress in a single bill can make decisions that are for the current year (today), future years (tomorrow), and yesterday (as in the example of the year changes were made in January that impacted the prior year’s taxes).   Most tax accountants are “Generalists” which means they have every combination of family structure, with and without children, elderly parents, grown children that moved back home, and friends they are helping out. Do you have health insurance, a qualified plan, non-qualified, State-run plan, or hoping for the best and will pay the No Insurance penalty. Do you own your home, have a second home, RV or Travel Trailer that qualifies as a second home. What about IRA’s, 401k’s, changed jobs, someone was ill; had to or chose to take an early distribution. What is a tax deduction and What is Not a tax deduction? Now add a business to the mix. Is the business a Sole Proprietor, LLC, Sub-Chapter S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership. Did you take a payroll, Loans to Owner, Loans to Members, Loans to Shareholder (makes a difference when preparing the tax return? Your Tax returns of today with a business are many pages long; gone are the days of the Easy File. They were the “Good Old Days” when you had a W-2 job, no house, and no to a zillion and one other questions that lead to a tax deduction. Every missing receipt could be a loss of a tax deduction.   Asking your tax accountant to focus on the details of your business is just TOO Much. By the time your information gets to the tax accountant; their focus is working on “The Punch List” starting first with the business tax return or Schedule C of your 1040 (looking for totals or several totals that are added together). Finally moving the numbers to the proper forms in order to save you money on your taxes.  Job Costing and job profitability is a question about details and good record keeping on the part of the contractor. A wife, spouse, partner, friend with the help of a construction accountant provide job costing reports. Without the proper tools, it is a frustrating activity for everyone involved. The contractor, if you don’t know what job you are on and unable to unwilling to slow down long enough to put a job name on the receipt. Then expecting others in your life to be able to EASILY (anything can be done) figure out the job costing with limited information is unreasonable. So when the tax accountant tries to keep their expression blank, without rolling their eyes and gently fobs off you, your wife, spouse, partner, friend off; they think they have it easy.  Tax accountant rolls the numbers all up. (Think subtotals on a proposal) Did the company make a profit Yes or No; determine your depreciation, review your travel, meals and entertainment, other misc. items. Move the numbers over to the personal side (1040 Return) which can also be messy. Complete your return. Thank you for coming in. This Podcast Is Episode Number 0180 And It Will Be About Annual Taxes And Job Costing From The View Of The Wife Of A Contractor The First Question You May Ask Yourself Is Why Doesn’t My Tax Accountant Help Me With Job Costing? They are Tax Accountants, not Construction Accountants and may not know the answers. You may think they are just keeping it a secret. Sometimes you may think they don’t know what they are doing, and maybe I need to get a new tax accountant. My Advice is Stop, take a deep breath. Is your tax accountant doing a good job with your annual taxes? If the answer is YES. Please keep them, they are doing what they are supposed to do. Annual taxes is like the game of “Pick Up Sticks” Details are everywhere, and all need to be gently picked up and placed on your tax return in a specific order. Not all of the items on the table are actual tax deductions. Your tax accountant must be up to date on the latest changes made by Congress and implemented by the Internal Revenue Service. Remember a few years ago when Congress made changes went they met in January. Then next the Internal Revenue Service had to determine how those changes applied to the individual pages on the tax return. Those changes then had to be sent to the software engineers to update all of the tax software. The rule is the first two pages of the annual 1040 are the summary of your tax return. The balance of the pages is supporting documents and worksheets. Congress in a single bill can make decisions that are for the current year (today), future years (tomorrow), and yesterday (as in the example of the year changes were made in January that impacted the prior year’s taxes). Most tax accountants are “Generalists” which means they have every combination of family structure, with and without children, elderly parents, grown children that moved back home, and friends they are helping out. Do you have health insurance, a qualified plan, non-qualified, State-run plan, or hoping for the best and will pay the No Insurance penalty.  Do you own your home, have a second home, RV or Travel Trailer that qualifies as a second home. What about IRA’s, 401k’s, changed jobs, someone was ill; had to or chose to take an early distribution. What is a tax deduction and What is Not a tax deduction? Now add your Construction Company to the mix. Is the business a Sole Proprietor, LLC, Sub-Chapter S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership. So Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.” (1 Samuel 23:7) This is the same thig Pharaoh said about the children ofodus 14:3) Israel after they had marched out of bondage and were at the edge of the Red Sea. “They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.” (Torah: Exodus 14:3) This is the same thing Satan says about you, “That person is trapped, and will never get out of this situation.” You have to make a decision: to listen to God for directions and obey what He tells you … or to listen to Satan. It's that simple … the choice is yours. If you listen to Satan, you don't have to do anything: just accept defeat. If you listen to God, you may have to fight and work hard to succeed in accomplishing your victory. It's that simple … the choice is yours. David asked God, “Will Saul come after me? Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?” The Hebrew word for “deliver” used here is “sagar” and means “to shut up or surrender.” David, by this time, had learned a great lesson in warfare: don't assume anything. A person can stab you in the back while they are hugging you. Let me repeat that: “Don't assume anything!” In the natural, David wouldn't have asked God the latter part of the question because he had just saved the men of Keilah, along with their families and possessions. However, David knew that his trust was in God and not men. God answered him, “Saul will come down to you … the men of Keilah will deliver you [if you stay].” (Verses 11 and 12.) So David and his men, who were about 600 at this time, arose and departed from Keilah and went wherever they could go. It was told Saul that David had escaped from Keilah; so he halted the expedition. It doesn't matter HOW God works … just so He works! Find out the will of God when you are in a circumstance too hard for you, or a circumstance about which you need to be adversial, or a circumstance in which you need wisdom. Listen to Him. God has many options, plus He can create NEW ones anytime He wants. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) We see how God delivered Elisha and his steward with angels in 2 Kings Chapter 6. The king of Syria was making war against Israel and Elisha told his leaders where the Syrian king would establish a military base from which to attack. And the man of God, Elisha, told the king of Israel, “Beware that you do not pass this place for the Syrians are coming down there.” MILITARY SECRETS & PROPHETS Concerning the military secrets of Syria, let me remind you of a historical record in the Tanakh, in the record of the Kings of Israel: We read an interesting passage: "Now the king of Syria was warring against Yisra'el; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.The man of G-d sent to the king of Yisra'el, saying, Beware that you not pass such a place; for there the Syrians are coming down. The king of Yisra'el sent to the place which the man of G-d told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once nor twice.The heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Won't you show me which of us is for the king of Yisra'el?One of his servants said, No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Yisra'el, tells the king of Yisra'el the words that you speak in your bedchamber." ________________________ In 2006 on this podast I gave information about terrorist plans against Hebrew University at Mt. Scopus starting via the desert (not the highway) from 30 kilometers south of Eilat (inland from the Gulf of Aqaba) up to a Bedouin camp southeast of Jerusalem and then to the City. Many … if not most … are probably alive right now. ________________________ The warning Elisha gave to the king of Israel happened several times, and that troubled the king of Syria. The Syrian king said to his servants, “Tell me who is spying for the king of Israel, and revealing to him my plans?” One of his servants answered, and said, “No one. It is the prophet who is in Israel; he tells the king of Israel what you say in your bedroom.” (2 Kings 6:8-11.) Then the king of Syria said, “Go see where he is at so that I may send troops to go get him.” Someone then told the king, “The prophet is in Dothan.” Then the king sent horses and chariots – a large group – and they surrounded the city where the prophet was. The next morning, when Elisha's servant woke up, he saw the chariots and servants surrounding the city and said, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” (Verses 14 and 15.) Then Elisha said, “Don't be afraid, those that are with us are more than those that are with them.” And Elisha prayed and said, “Lord, open his eyes that he may see.” Then, the LORD opened the eyes of Elisha's servants so that he could see in the Spirit: and he saw the mountain full of angels and horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (Verses 16 and 17.) TO BELIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE YOU MUST FIRST SEE THE INVISIBLE! GOD HAS MANY ANGELS AVAILABLE TO WORK FOR YOU AS YOU INVOLVE YOURSELF IN HIS KINGDOM WORK! When the Syrians came to take Elisha, he prayed to the LORD, “Strike these people, I pray, with blindness.” Then Elisha told the enemy, “Follow me, you are going the wrong way; this is not the way. I will bring you to the man you are looking for.” But he led them to the king of Israel in Samaria, and then prayed, “Lord, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Elisha told the king to feed them instead of killing them. The Syrians returned to their king, and after that the bands of Syrian raiders never came back into Israel. (Verses 18-23) Those were beautiful REAL MIRACLES that happened in Dothan. However, there was another situation in Dothan that happened about 1,300 years before. There was a young man in Dothan who needed deliverance, also, but was taken captive by his own brothers, placed in a pit, and sold to traders who were going into Egypt. That young man was heart broken, betrayed by his own family members. Later, he was falsely accused by a woman and placed into prison. But, during all this time he never forgot the vision – the dream – God had given him years before. Finally, 13 years later, he became Prime Minister, economic couselor to Pharaoh (king) of Egypt. In that position he not only saved the nations of Middle East from a world famine, but he even saved his family who had betrayed him. His name was Joseph. GOD DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK THE SAME WAY IN YOUR LIFE AS HE DOES IN OTHERS! YOUR JOB IS TO LOVE GOD, FORGIVE OTHERS, BELIEVE HIM FOR MIRACLES, AND NEVER LOSE THE VISION HE HAS GIVEN YOU.
