Armored Saint singer John Bush and bass player Joey Vera, who are currently out on tour with Queensryche. They'll be coming through Detroit to play the Majestic Theater on April 14th. Joey said of touring with the QR guys, "It's always fun touring with friends, people you get along with." We talked about their experience on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise. "Yeah, they're fun. You always see a lot of people you know." Joey said. The guys told me about going to Anthrax's Scott Ian's 60th birthday in Las Angeles at the end of 2023. John said there were some really talented people there celebrating the milestone. The band recently recorded a cover of "One Chain Don't Make No Prison" which they're going to release as a stand-alone single. That being said, the guys are all about making full albums. They talked about album reissues, as well as vinyl copies of all their albums. I had to ask them about the new Armored Saint music they're working on. As far as writing on the road, Joey said they don't do it. "We just write at our own pace." He went on to say they have six or seven songs demoed. They'll be touring and then returning to the studio to finish it up by the end of the year. Something I didn't know about Armored Saint was that their first show outside of hometown shows was at Harpos. They said they played a radio station show way back in 1984. "That was our first show ever outside of California," Joey said. John talked of that show being added last minute, as they were supposed to play Chicago first. They also played Cobo Hall on that first tour. "We just couldn't believe what was happening," Joey said of playing some of these classic venues. Joey told the story of crashing a car with Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. We also talked about their tour with W.A.S.P. and Metallica, where they were snowed-in, in Buffalo, New York. Joey also told a funny story from early in their career about a comment he made about Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. on the radio. Great to talk to the guys!

This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

British vocalist Steve Overland is best known for his work with rock outfit FM, but he's teamed up with Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos on a new melodic hard rock band called Kings of Mercia. The band, which includes Matheos' Fates Warning bassist Joey Vera and legendary drummer Simon Phillips, has just released its self-titled debut album on Metal Blade Records. It's an outstanding blend of what Matheos and Overland are best known for and the album is full of catchy, well-crafted songs that showcase both Matheos' big guitar sound and Overland's bluesy vocals. Steve was kind enough to tell me about how he got involved with the band, how the writing was done, and a bit about his background as well. You can find out more about Kings of Mercia at the band's website. This week on Sheer Isolation we're joined by Mercyful Fate bassist, Becky Baldwin! That is THE Mercyful Fate - the iconic Danish metal 80s band. Originally from Trowbridge, Becky will soon be joining the band as they tour America; filling in for their usual bassist, Joey Vera. She tells us how this once-in-a-lifetime chance came about thanks to her social media accounts, in particular her YouTube videos. Her online showcase has created a fantastic platform to show her skills as a session guitarist. If you're into your classic metal bands, you may have already seen Becky play in one of her regular groups, Fury and Hands Off Gretel. Our music choices this week include one of Fury's latest releases, and Kieran plays a tune from electro-pop duo, Pecq. In our news section, we discuss the latest developments that are delaying much-needed renovation work at Swindon's Oasis Centre.

Bob Nalbandian is one of the original behind the scene dudes of the 1980's Los Angeles Metal Scene. His documentaries are a great starting point if you want to find out the real history of the LA metal scene, since Bob was writing about the scene when it all began. Starting with 2014's "The Pioneers of LA Hard Rock and Heavy Metal", Bob's documentaries have always included interviews with the people that helped the scene get started. Whether it be Lars Ulrich, Steven Pearcy, Joey Vera, or Don Dokken, Bob covers all the bases. If you are a fan of the LA metal scene or just a fan of heavy metal in general, you need to hear this podcast...

Metal Mayhem ROC Special Interview Edition with John Bush lead singer from the band “Armored Saint.” Hello #metalheads, “it's always heavy in here”! We are excited to bring you this special interview, recorded in the Metal Mayhem ROC Studios in Rochester, NY. Metal Forever Mark and the Vernomatic had the opportunity to speak with the Legendary John Bush from Armored Saint. Bush gives insight on the latest Armored Saint release “Punching The Sky” and how the band has been promoting the release without playing live. The guys take a walk down Heavy Metal memory lane with tales from the famous 1985 tour "Ride the Lightning" tour with headlining W.A.S.P., Metallica and followed by Armored Saint. John participates in staple show segment MT. RUSHMORE OF METAL with his top 4 metal singers...listen to see who! Leaders and stalwarts of the American heavy metal scene since the early 80s, Armored Saint's eighth full-length album Punching The Sky sees them returning with a hard, diverse, attitude-drenched collection. It's everything that faithful followers have come to expect from them while pushing their signature sound forward. "The goal is to write really good music. I know I'm stating the obvious here but that's about the size of our agenda," says bassist Joey Vera. "We've been able to shed a lot of expectations that sometimes plague a band like ours that has been around a long time, and we've recently moved into a comfort zone with just being ourselves. This record is a reflection of where we're at, right now." With the band's place in the metal scene firmly reestablished with Punching The Sky, they are staring down their four decade anniversary, which Vera reflects on. "Part of me feels like I can't believe we've been doing this for that long. It's kind of incredible. So I feel pretty damn lucky really, that we've been able to have the support from fans and our record company for all these years. Without this support, we really couldn't do any of this. So this is the big part of what has kept us going, and when I stop and look around, I am humbled that we've had this opportunity to make music and tour for such a long time. That's what our initial goal was back when we were just 18 years old." https://www.facebook.com/thearmoredsaint https://twitter.com/thearmoredsaint http://armoredsaint.com/ “End of The Attention Span” https://open.spotify.com/track/0ZXfCqbSaymA9otjk7lIQS?si=UGZYkqJwTuqPF9wreu4cYA- "Missle to Gun" https://open.spotify.com/track/6NB1gVo28x1LS4OzGjqki5?si=F6UdwxdDREKQGlUtDLOotA “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” https://open.spotify.com/track/1t45nu8Bz8V0H1Adc54dvL?si=WyfE-I0lToeprIAKz7W0Gg

Armored Saint have successfully negotiated the metal landscape for over forty years, bearing large influence on the heavy metal scene for which they were cast. With their latest album Punching The Sky set for release on October 23, bass player Joey Vera sat down with HEAVY to fill us in on what has been happening with the band.We start by asking if he still gets nervous about an album release four decades on."Nervous... not as this point today”, he measured, “but I'm always nervous letting it go when I'm at the mixing stage and when we're mastering. I think being the producer of the record and one of the chief songwriters when you have to give that final stamp of approval, like okay this is good enough let it out to the masses, that's the scary part for me. That's where I do get nervous. I don't know why... it's not really an insecurity thing... I'm not sure. I get so close to it over a couple of years that it gets like this puppy that you're raising and then you let it go into the wild to survive on its own. It's not that I wanna protect it or anything, but I guess it's letting yourself be vulnerable because a lot of it is part of you and you have to let it out and let the world see it."Armored Saint pretty much have a sound that is easily identifiable as their own, but Vera stresses that in the writing process for an album there is no definable pattern or criteria they follow in order to produce what is expected."There’s no real agenda, to be honest with you,” he explained. “John (Bush, vocals) and I write most of the music and we are really only concerned with writing great songs that we wanna hear ourselves and that we can be proud of and that's really the extent of it. We don't have conversations at all about what are we gonna go for? Or what direction are we gonna go? Or what kind of songs are we gonna write? We don't have those conversations at all. We try to let it all happen organically so it starts with a couple of riffs and a couple of songs in the beginning and then usually the first couple of songs set the stage for the rest of the writing. We let that happen naturally and we let the snowball go down the hill and it gathers strength and gets movement. That's kind of the only conscious thing that happens in that way. There are some other things that are a little deeper than that, but that's basically how the ball starts to roll."In the full interview, Joey talks more about Punching The Sky and its musical content, fan expectations with music and managing to shed that when writing a record, his role as producer on the album and the positives and negatives of that, the musical climate that gave birth to Armored Saint, choosing the opening track for an album and more.

Greg Leon was born on May 19, 1958 and grew up in Glendale, CA, a foothills community of Los Angeles, and immediately made an impact on the blossoming live hard rock scene of Hollywood's Sunset Strip in the late 1970s. Primarily playing guitar and handling vocals, the acts that he fronted were Suite 19, with future Great White/Dokken drummer Gary Holland and then future Motley Crue drummer, Tommy Lee and the Greg Leon Invasion, with bassist Joey Vera (later of Armored Saint, Fate's Warning and Anthrax) and drummer Carl Elizondo (later of Jag Wire, and playing under the stage name Carl James). The Invasion would release the "Every Time" b/w "Stay With Me Tonite" 7" single with Vera on bass who was fired when it was discovered by Leon that he had been moonlighting with Armored Saint. Vera's replacement, Chuck Stevenson and Elizondo played with Leon on the Greg Leon Invasion picture disc released by Azra/R2R in 1983. He took the place of Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, and as the pre-George Lynch guitarist in Dokken. (Don Dokken has since made the group's first EP, which graces Leon on the cover, available for download to the public). During this period Leon also had a considerable local reputation as a guitar teacher, working at Rhoads' mother's guitar studio in Burbank. Leon had several incarnations of the Invasion and played with various LA acts after his exciting early days. Leon also had a brief time with Greenworld Records' Midwestern act Vyper, while at the same time gathering a name for himself as a guitar amp modifying specialist. In the late 1990s, Leon fronted a band called Wishing Well which also featured Survivor drummer Marc Droubay and English-born bassist Stuart Brooks (ex-Black Cat Bones, Leaf Hound, The Pretty Things). The trio released their eponymous debut album in 1997. By 2003 Leon was back on the LA club scene under the name The Greg Leon Invasion, featuring Boston-born bassist George Roelke and Ohio-born drummer Greg Stevens, taking the group for a European festival tour in 2005 on the strength of new recordings, coupled with the myth related to his name. The line-up also performed July 13, 2007 at the annual 1980s-era hard rock music festival, Rocklahoma. In 2008 former White Lion drummer Greg D'Angelo replaced Stevens in the band. Leon is married with Canadian singer Suza Wood and in 2005 he produced her first album titled Sweet Freedom.
