Canada has a 5G and Huawei dilemma – but what is it, exactly? Is it technical risk? A matter of economic national security? Geopolitics? In reality, it is all of the above, but conflating these issues is hindering Canada's ability to respond. Stephanie sits down with Christopher Parsons, a Senior Research Associate at the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, to talk about these issues on the podcast. They walk through Chris' report that unpacks Canada's Huawei/5G dilemmas, and what this means for Canadian national security, foreign policy and critical infrastructure going forward. You can (and should!) read Chris Parson's report, “Huawei and 5G: Clarifying the Canadian Equities and Charting a Strategic Path Forward” here: https://citizenlab.ca/2020/12/huawei-5g-clarifying-the-canadian-equities-and-charting-a-strategic-path-forward/

Ütleme välispoliitika, ütleme aina valjemalt Hiina. Ütleme Hiina, ütleme konkreetsemalt Huawei. Ning Eestil seisab siin ees raske otsus. Kas me järgime Ühendriikide survet ning välistame Huawei 5G võrkude kriitiliste osade ehitamisest või mitte. Taustaks nii palju, et USA-s on harukordselt tugev parteideülene üksmeel määratleda Hiinat strateegilise rivaalina. Hiina tehnoloogia lipulaevale Huaweile heidetakse ette potentsiaalset salakuulamist ehk n-ö tagauksi info lekitamiseks Pekingile kui ka seotust inimõiguste rikkumisega uiguuride kallal. Välispoliitika instituudi teadur Frank Jüris sõnas möödunud nädalal Eesti Päevalehele antud intervjuus, et see on näide, kuidas suudetakse pigem ühise eesmärgi nimel tegutseda. „Me oleme startupi-riik,“ meenutas Heikla, mis kaalul on. „Kogu keskustelu taandub praegu piltlikult poekärude peale, aga oluline on hoopis kassasüsteem. Me tahaksime teha kihvte, fancycid tooteid, mida see kassasüsteem suudab läbi närida. Milliseid suuniseid jagavad Huaweile kommunistid? Kuula Krister Parise intervjuud Alar Heiklaga siit!

On this week's edition of the Futurum Tech Podcast, how the coronavirus may change tech trade shows in the future. Apple gets fined by the EU, Google earnings analysis, the space race heats up again and Britain points the way to Huawei 5G network compromise. THIS WEEK's FAST FIVE > Alphabet's 4th quarter 2019 results show promising growth > Nvidia's GE Force NOW eliminates wait lists and opens memberships to all > Apple is being fined by France's DGCCRF for slowing down old iPhones > NASA is now questioning Boeing about potential glitches with the CST-100 Starliner > Britain's plan to contain Huawei's involvement with 5G networks This week's Tech Bites Winner: The US government purchases location data for millions of cell phones, allegedly to track and locate undocumented immigrants. The ethical issue here is not the legitimacy of these agencies' mission - from immigration enforcement and border protection to fighting human trafficking - but rather the potential slippery slope of warrantless mass surveillance being enabled by the private sector, and remaining unchecked by a not-always-tech-savvy US courts system. Our military has a disturbing tendency to keep fighting the last wars, not the likely future ones. Now a visionary general is being forced into retirement because he's advocating a very different approach to counter Chinese aims to achieve dominance in space. By employing technologies from space like lasers and robotic systems, China could severely compromise our national security and our economy. Take out our GPS system, and banking comes to a grinding halt. On another front, China's massive surveillance state and social credit scores send a chill down the spines of free people everywhere. Worse, China also aims to “export” these systems throughout the world. It's already happening in Venezuela and wherever they build their “Belt and Road”. And with Huawei 5G they could have capabilities to monitor the entire world. Frank Gaffney, founder of the Center for Security Policy and Kevin Freeman, host of the Economic War Room, explain on the Bill Walton Show.
