This week, we decided to do the same thing we do every week: Talk about first issues and comic book news! From the headlines, we'll get into X-Men 97 reception, Eight Billion Genies getting high profile MOVIE producers, the newly announced Marvel 1943 video game, and job listings for AI artists at comic book publishers. For our reading club portion, Greg discusses Ram V's Dawnrunner, and DC Comics Ape-ril special. Then Vargas walks us through Takashi Okazaki's Star Wars Vision issue featuring The Ronin and The Droid, Man's Best out on Boom!, and Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance. If ya want more, we've got a 007 episode up on the patreon this week, and in our upcoming regular release we play some trivia.
Hey all! Join us in this exciting episode of Geek Freaks where Frank dives deep into the buzzing world of 'Cicada Samurai' with the creator and writer, Jerry Carita! With its unique blend of action, horror, and real-world parental fears, 'Cicada Samurai' stands out in the comic universe, and Frank is eager to uncover the inspiration and process behind this enthralling narrative. Jerry shares his journey from being an unscripted TV producer to venturing into the vast and vivid universe of comics, explaining how 'Comic Book Men' for AMC played a pivotal role in sparking his passion. WHAT DID THE WANDERING RONIN DO BEFORE THE DUEL? For ep 124 (& April Fool's Day), this episode is technically not “canon” as it takes place in a Star Wars Visions continuity, more specifically, The Duel. This comic is a prequel to The Duel animated episode, which is also linked to the Ronin novel. Mike explores The Ronin's story, confirms connections along the way and gives his interpretations to the ending. Star Wars: Visions 1 was released on October 12th 2022 and it was written by Takashi Okazaki, who also did the artwork and the colours. Aki Yanagi did the English translation and the book Ronin was written by Emma Mieko Candon. As Chanath Cha finally confronts Vader for 2 decades of revenge, Aphra learns even more from the Spark Eternal and gets more than she bargained for! Plus Beilert Valance also takes issue with Vader & The Empire's lies so tries to fight the Sith Lord one-on-one in an act of pure anger, but as we know Vader's fate, what will happen to those who challenge the Sith Lord – will they live to tell the tale? Heading into a year of Alien, Symbiotes, and Superman, how do you approach the page with so many universes in mind? What do you think is the key to the lasting appeal of the Alien franchise? Why has it managed to intrigue audiences on the screen and the page for 4 decades? We know there is a Star Wars Story group that checks stories, is there an Alien Story group? On that same note, it was awesome seeing Bishop in the first issue of Alien. Were there any characters that you were told were off-limits? What is the collaboration process like with Salvador Larroca?Headlining Extreme Carnage Alpha, can you talk a little bit about this project, are you the ringleader so to speak?Do you have a favorite Symbiote?I’m not a betting man, but you must have pondered what an Alien vs. Symbiote story would look like. Or for that matter, a mega alien battle between Superman, Alien, and Carnage? Who do you have coming out on top?Are there any other projects you’d like to discuss or plug today?Off-Topic Top Shelf - Home Schooling, Lifting, Reading for research
Esha and Kristen are back and have Afros on the brain. In this manga/anime series and movie, we follow Afro, A Black samurai on a mission to avenge the death of his father by the gunslinger Justice in a futuristic feudal Japan. We also see the consequences that come with choosing that bloody path. The sisters also discuss black/POC representation in anime and what it means to them to be an anime blerd. "Afro Samurai" created by Takashi Okazaki. With the anime series and movie, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson as the titular character and Ron Perlman as the voice of Justice, the gunslinger. Did we forget to mention that the voice of another animated Samurai makes an appearance? But it just keeps getting better with two soundtracks by the RZA of Wu-Tang Clan!!! How many Fuzzy Fros would you give it? Cause we definitely forgot to say that.
Batman Ninja was an ambitious project released in 2018, this film watched like a love letter to Japanese culture through the lease of one of the most beloved Western IPs ever! We ask the question does it Anime as an attempt to differentiate whether anime is a style or simply the location the film originates from. This piece was produced by Warner Bros. in conjunction with Kamikaze Douga bringing the DC Comic superstar to the Japanese landscape. We have director Junpei Mizusaki, which has cut his teeth in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure universe which you can see a lot of influence in this piece. We also had Takashi Okazaki, responsible for character design in Batman Ninja, you may know from being the creator of Afro Samurai. If you are a huge Japanese subtitle fan you will feel extremely nostalgic. There are a ton of voice actors that you will recognize from mega hits like Naruto Shippuden, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Evangelion, Dragonball Super, and many more. There was a ton of art styles exhibited in this film, this was one of the best parts of the film. We think in terms of a Batman movie it was fairly weak but from an Anime perspective it was much better than expected and truly worth the watch!I (Ethan) was a little low energy this episode so I apologize for that but you know I had some legit points and super props to Ricky for absolutely carrying my drowsy visage. Batman meets anime! We’re looking at the Japanese DC animated movie – Batman Ninja. This Japanese interpretation of Batman is directed by Junpei Mizusaki, with character designs from Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. The English voice cast includes Roger Craig Smith as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Tony Hale as The Joker, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, and Grey Griffin as Catwoman. Batman is caught in Gorilla Grodd’s Quake Engine time displacement machine and is sent to Feudal Japan. But he didn’t travel there alone. Gotham City’s top criminals have moved to Feudal Japan and become feudal lords. In order to stop the villains from changing history, Batman and Catwoman must get to the Quake Engine in Arkham Castle.

Podcast manga review of Afro Samurai Volume 1 by Takashi Okazaki. Translated by Greg Moore. Adapted by Joshua Fialkov. Published by Seven Seas, $10.99, Rated OT Ages 16+. When Afro Samurai was a young child, he witnessed the death of his father, known simply as "Number 1", a swordsman, get brutally killed by "Number 2", a mysterious gunfighter. What these numbers siginify are the ranks of the fighters. So, if you wear the Number 1 headband, it signifies that you are the deadliest warrior in the world. Over the years, a number of legends have sprung up around the Number 1 headband. For example, whoever wears it will rule the world, or the tale that it grants immortality. Nobody knows if any of this or none of it is true. But it doesn't stop people from coveting it anyway. Since then, Afro Samurai has grown into a brutally remorseless warrior, working his way up to Number 2. He now wants to take down Number 1. It has nothing to do with the power he would gain if he wins. It has to do with simple revenge. He wants to kill the guy that killed his father. But the problem when you are wearing one of the top headbands is that you always have those who want your spot. Afro has the additional complication of being a wanted man. A group of underworld kingpins, known as "The Empty Seven", have put out a contract on Afro because some of their number believe that even the Number 2 headband has some sort of divine power.
