This episode is all about Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, the new rhythm game filled with Final Fantasy music. It's fantastic. While Square says that this is the last Theatrhythm Final Fantasy title, the developers did tell Spanish-speaking media that they are open to doing Theatrhythm style games for other franchises like Nintendo and the Tales series. Earthworm Jim 4 has been supposedly cancelled, putting yet another nail in the Intellivision Amico coffin. Then we talk to Rob about finding a PS5 in the wild. After this episode aired, I DID receive the PlayStation VR2 so that is what we will be talking about on the next episode!

This week, we’re talking about the music in Dragon Quest! It’s a special Patreon patron-request episode. Our newest patron, Abigail, belongs to the tier that lets you choose your own episode topic, and she chose music. Which is great. We haven’t really done a full episode on music before, so it’s the perfect time to do that! The music of DQ has always been done by Koichi Sugiyama, who is kind of a turd. Who is Koichi Sugiyama? Should’ve mentioned him in the Old Man episode, because he’s the oldest of them all. He’s officially the oldest video game composer ever. He's approaching 90. He’s worked on a Godzilla film and at least one Gatchaman movie, which kinda ties him indirectly to another famous artist in the video game world beside Akira Toriyama: Amano, who started in the animation department working on Gatchaman anime in the 1970s. Dragon Quest Music: The Beginning  According to legend, Koichi Sugiyama wrote the theme for DQ on his first try in less than five minutes. Although, Sugiyama says…”54" He would get frustrated with Koichi Nakamura (Chunsoft dude) about the music in the earliest Famicom entries because he had high aspirations for the music that just technically couldn’t be done yet. People LOVE “A Lonely Youth” from DQ 2. To me, it seems to be an unofficial favorite. I see so many people loving that song. And I think it’s a good one, but it’s not my favorite. Austin's favorite DQ soundtrack is from 1.0 of DQ X. It’s by far the most eclectic mix of music in a DQ game, and I really love the Eleven stuff, especially in the capital city. The Weddie stuff ain’t bad neither. Beej...doesn't know any particular tracks because he's just about music illiterate. But he loves the fanfare! It makes him feel like going on an adventure! Theatrhythm Dragon Quest People criticize the music of DQ as being too similar, and while that’s fair, I don’t think Sugiyama really cares. I mean, he’s got the DQ Ballet that’s an ode to his music, and an entire video game dedicated to his songs. He’s the only composer in the WORLD who has a video game just for his songs. Even the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy games has music from different composers. The game is cool, and you can download a demo for it onto your 3DS. It’s in Japanese, but it plays like Theatrhythm FF and Guitar Hero, so it’s not super hard to figure out. If you like rhythm games and have played a few, then I don’t think you’ll have a hard time understanding it. It’s 2013 and somehow we survived the apocalypse! Time to ring in the new year in style, with a new episode of Nerds Without Pants. This week we’re a nerd down, as Patrick is convalescing after minor surgery. Filling in is the one and only Ty “Fighter”, who long time listeners will know as Rob’s oft-mentioned buddy. Since every podcast is doing their game of the year lists we decided to buck that trend and instead take a look back at the year that was. Before that, we talk about stuff that we’ve been up to, including Hitman: Absolution, FTL, and Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy. Ty has gone down the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure rabbit hole, and Rob has a walk of shame. Oh, and Julian went streaking on New Year’s Eve! After that we discuss some of the biggest things to hit the video game industry in 2012. We take a look at the implications of Kickstarter on indie game development, explore why we aren’t all that excited over the PS Vita and Wii U, and try to get to the bottom of so many major game designers leaving their companies. Julian takes the BioWare fans to task over their ridiculous demands over the ending to Mass Effect 3. We close things out with our favorite games of 2012, as well as our favorite gaming experiences of 2012. We have big plans in store for NWP this year, and we hope you continue to listen and support us. Please comment with your favorite game and experience of 2012 in the comments. You can check out Rob’s entire top five here, and you can follow Ty on Tumblr.  Visit our Facebook fanpage, and come back in two weeks for the triumphant return of The Ginger Devil! Sex. Now that I have your attention, why is it something that gaming podcasts don’t talk about very often? Sex sells, and game developers have used it more and more in their games over the years. Your favorite nerdy trio takes off their pants, turns on their mics, and talk at length about sex in vidya games. But before that we talk some recent games, including Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Slender, and Unchained Blades. We kick things off with a little of our sexual histories, and pontificate for a bit on just who would make it onto our Freebie Five lists. Things then turn to how sex impacts our games and the industry. Did Hot Coffee destroy the potential for sex in games? Did BioWare lose their nerve after the Fox News Mass Effect debacle? Can gamers even handle sexuality in video games in a mature manner, or can we just not have nice things? We explore games that handle sexuality in interesting or subtle ways, as well as highlight some of the inherent problems with trying to tackle these issues. Throughout the show we take some of our listener’s Kinsey Report questions, and Rob continues his desperate advances towards Patrick. Enjoy all of this and more in this (surprisingly) mature look at getting it on in the virtual space. And don’t worry ladies: unlike Christian Grey we can give you more than a paragraph’s worth of pleasure. Liked the episode? Hated it? Want to submit ideas for topics? Join our Facebook Fanpage! Connectivity returns this week with episode 42, featuring the past, present, and future of Nintendo-related content. Kicking things off is the final installment in our Pikmin series, focusing this week on Pikmin 3. Join JP, Andy, and Carmine as they discuss what we know and what they hope is on the horizon for the Wii U launch title. If you can believe it, they even flirt with the idea of Pikmin 4, too. After that, Nicholas returns with another entry in his award winning* N-Focus series. This week's segment is all about the history of Game and Watch. Lastly, Neal, Scott, Danny, and Nate sit down to talk about their latest obsession - Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. If you are on the fence about this game, this segment should definitely win you over. And if you already have the game, well, you probably aren't listening to this because you are too busy playing. As always, you can click here to send us listener mail. Let us know what you thought about the three week long Pikmin series. If a big hit, we may just start doing more of those. Oh, and on a personal note, I (Scott) have now officially been with Nintendo World Report for one year. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who listened, commented, emailed, tweeted me, and everything else. I can't put into words how amazing it is to be doing this show for such an excellent audience. Thanks for everything. See you next week. *Winner of the 2012 "Boner Jam" award, presented by Scott Thompson.
