It is horror season on our book club podcast, so it is horror manga time! Today's manga is about a pet shop in Chinatown, where the mysterious manager sells mythical creatures and cryptids for pets, but the people who get their pets here cannot help but see these creatures as more human than animal; a mistake that will lead them to their downfall! Skip plot summary @ 7:05 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 126: Petshop of Horrors By Akino Matsuri Translation by Tomoharu Iwo and James Lucas Jones Lettering by Nunu Ngien Synopsis: In the heart of L.A.'s chinatown rests a pet shop owned by the mysterious Count D. The grandson to Count D, (who we shall just call D for now) is a mysterious, somewhat effeminate, and eccentric person who acts as the store manager whilst the count is away on business. When the wealthier clientele ask for exotic and rare pets D takes them to the back and sells them cryptids and strange supernatural, sometimes mythological creatures that resemble humans. But before he sells them D has them sign a contract with specific clauses. Something more akin to rules that if broken have dire consequences that D himself refuses to be liable for, but D will on occasion offer advice to those who are troubled enough to have broken them. Often the rules come in threes, with one mostly telling owners only to feed their pets with fresh water and vegetables, but a rule that almost always occurs tells them to never show their pets to anyone. Each chapter tells a tale about the owners that sometimes revolves around a moral. Such as the husband and wife who buy what D claims to be a rabbit, which then replaces their dead daughter. Only for their parents to repeat the same behaviour that led to their daughter's demise. After numerous episodes of owners losing control of their so-called pets; it sparks an investigation from the detective, Leon Orcolt, whom suspects D of using the petshop as a front for drug or human trafficking but Little does the detective know about the surreal nature of the monsters inside the shop. · Petshop of Horror being a Josei manga, not shojo, implies it is a story for women and not young girls (perhaps young adult, teen audience) Tokyopop publishing gave it 13+ age rating. · Originally published 1996 in Japan and 2003 in English by Tokyopop, although today Tokyopop is known for its Disney Licenses and manga aimed at young girls, the publishers have not been the same since losing the License to Kodansha manga in 2008, with Kodansha seizing control of their English publication instead of outsourcing it through Tokyopop. · The spin offs/sequels to the manga include shin petshop (2005), Passage-Hen (2013) and Ark Adrift (2018) It had a short 4-episode anime adaptation in 1999 by the Production studio Madhouse. At the time of this podcast episode being uploaded, Petshop of Horrors: Ark Adrift is still being made, with Akino Matsuri having worked continuously on the franchise from its inception. · Episodic stories only work when focused on character, but you can also have the recurring character fit into a basic monomyth like template and just have your recurring character take a base role. In this case D is almost always the supernatural aide or the sage role. As the pets he gives are guised in being remedial to the episodic character's problems but are in fact tests of character. · Episodic plots tend to have a gimmick in this case, it is the pet which acts as a monster of the week plot. · Female power fantasy aimed at a more adult audience tends to have men be servents to the female protagonist and the male figure is an extension of the woman's power and influence. The woman is defined by her cabality, or lack of cabality to romantically love such a character whilst maintaining power and influence. At the time of the manga's release the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner movie, The Bodyguard (1992) was popular. That movie is also like the relationship dynamic seen in Chapter 4 with Dreizhein (a.k.a. Dora-Chan) and Karen. At first Karen feels disrespected and being overly protected by Dreizhen she feels her identity and independency as a mature woman is threatened, Dreizhein is a sexual threat since he is an overprotective man. In such stories the woman learns to accept the man, love him, and trust him, whilst at the same time another suitor betrays her trust. And as often the case, the mythical protector is unable to or at least struggles to love the woman back as it creates fear in the man that it will diminish his ability as a bodyguard. Sometime, in love stories targeted to males, the male figure is only around long enough that so the woman can learn something about herself and the male then goes on to new adventures. Petshop of Horrors has a more fairy tale approach. By having the man become a literal doberman dog by the end of the story the male figure loses their sexuality, it is as if the woman has tamed the man, but only after eliminating all her threats. The bodyguard is no longer seen as a sexual threat and the woman remains virginal for the time being, or at the very least remains motherly to her new pet who has saved her life. · The store manager has his own animal companion named Q-Chan. Q-Chan is a Wolperdinger (written as Valvertinger in the 2003 English Tokyopop translation). This animal is from German folklore and is a hybrid of a squirrel or rabbit combined with horns and wings. Interestingly Q-Chan looks more like Moogles (or Mogs) from the Final Fantasy videogames, due to having bat like wings. An American version of this creature is the jackelope, a jackrabbit with antelope horns, and unlike deer, antelope do not shed their horns. Hunters and Taxidermists have made ornamental Jackelopes and Wolperdinger. So just because you see one stuffed and on the shelf of a pub does not make them real. · One of the pets is a reference to Medusa of Greek myth, Medusa was cursed for her vanity, when the jealous goddess Athena decided to make it so that Medusa's gaze could turn people into stone. One interpretation could say she was cursed with good looks prior to this, as to not blame Medusa since in myth she did not accept the advances of the god Poseidon. Now Medusa is seen as a feminist symbol of female rage. Her head is used as an apotropaic symbol (a magical charm to ward off threats) especially on the accessories by Versace. · Alice is named after the protagonist of Lewis Carol's “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” Notable for entering a surreal world by chasing a white rabbit. · Dreizhein (Dora-Chan) has his ears clipped and explains this is standard procedure for those who serve the military (he never explains more than that). There is a history with Doberman dogs being cosmetically altered, having their tails surgically shortened and their ears cut. It is thought that the ears would help them hear better but due the illegality of doing this there has not been a thorough study. Facebook Instagram X Official Website Email

The sole requirement to take part in this event is that your character must be at least level 30. You just need to travel to Limsa Lominsa - Upper Decks with your level 30+ character to obtain the quest "A Matter of Course" from Mayaru Moyaru (X: 11.5 Y: 13.8). You must speak with the Moonfire Faire Chairman, Haermaga (X: 36.2 Y: 26.7), at Costa Del Sol as part of this mission. From this point on, take in the dialogue and cutscenes until you're told to go. Opening with the role call of Captain Brown Pants and his boisterous crew aboard their fictional ship, The Prairie Dog, the boys lead with their basest sense of humor as yet another poo bit spirals out of control. Season 2, Episode 2, begins with an exploration of guilty pleasures. Wes discusses meme culture— what is the social currency of the little photos that seem to saturate our feeds, and how have they evolved? That deep discussion is quickly stifled, however, by Rhys’s guilty pleasure of creating Facebook events to attract people to parties, and the alleged cyberbullying that he needs to keep it functioning. The LAST Random Fandom for the foreseeable future takes a look at the merging of two nerdy video game icons: World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy. A rousing AI Generated Fanfic creates a resulting world with interesting implications for Chocobos, Moogles, and Cactour. Rhys brings in an Avatar the Last Airbender story to kick things off, taking a look at post-war life as Aang and the gang prepare for a unity festival of the four nations. Full of culture, sentiment, and historical allegory, this story provides the boys with a wonderful discussion regarding the associations between art and war. Wes leads with a unique Seth Meyers x Stefan story that takes us all into a colorful, musical, and trippy reading as they explore New York’s Hottest Club with the Saturday Night Live duo. This is STFF 2, 2?

This week, Kaleb and Joe, joined by Emilee Mentos, Krinital, and Zoey for a fun filled discussion of our experience with Heavensward. Enjoy! Development Heavensward began development about a year before its release on June 23, 2015, just a few months before its October announcement at the 2014 fan festival (which we were totally there for). Apparently they chose the theme of “sky” for the expansion, my assumption being y'know, dragons, wings, flying mounts… Anyway the developers strategically set up the expansion through ARR patches throughout the year, setting up Ishgard Lore. Along with an expansion of story, the game utilized Directx 11 technologies to better process the game and to slightly enhance the story. The Heavensward expansion would continue through the Dragonsong War campaign released through patches that now lead to stormblood, but this review will only be covering the game’s original release. Story (took this from an awesome forum post on reddit) Basically, you go into Ishgard wanting to help them against the Dragons, venturing through the Western Highlands dealing with the heretics and Iceheart/Shiva. Then there's this little segment of finding out where Rauhban is and you free him, fight Ilberd and that stupid Lalafell Yuyuhase, and you also find out, from Lolorito himself, that Nanamo is still alive. Once all that's settled, you return to Ishgard, deal with a few things and, along with Estinien, eventually get to the Dravanian Forelands and get assistance through the Vath who need you to kill Ravana first, then dragonkin that Iceheart/Shiva knows to head up to the Churning Mists to get help from Hraesvelgr. You go through Sohm Al, the peak of the mountain in the Forelands and enter the Churning Mists, you help the Moogles up there at Moghome a bit and get the trumpet they use to head to Zenith to call down Hraesvelgr and ask him for help/assistance. Hrasevelgr basically tells you that in the past, Ishgard was a peaceful kingdom, dragons and humans lived in peace. Until King Thordan and the 12 Knights killed Ratatoskr, one of Midgardsormr's first brood, and ate her eyes. Nidhogg heard of this, and vowed to kill every last human, basically dragons rule. You also learn that Nidhogg got one of his current eyes from Hraesvelgr. To end the war between man and dragonkin, you need to kill Nidhogg. So you go kill him, get his other eye and return it back to Hrasevelgr. Nidhogg is seemingly dead. At this point, you learn, through the Echo, that all of Ishgard is of the same blood, from when Haldrath had slayed Nidhogg the first time, and learn that everyone is not lowborn or highborn. So you head back to Ishgard with this juicy gossip, talk to Aymeric and it turns out there's an Elezen/Hyuran woman called 'the Mongrel' who basically is born from a lowborn Hyuran servantwoman and a highborn Elezen. In Ishgard, that's taboo, you don't have mixed children between highborn and lowborn. So at this point, Ser Charibert, one of the 12 Knights, finds out you're plotting to tell, you fight him, and then Ser Aymeric decides to go confront King Thordan about it and from the new info, that we now learn that Thordan is Ser Aymeric's father, but born out of wedlock, makes Aymeric Thordan's bastard son. Eventually, you make it to the Vault, where Thordan and Aymeric are, and battle against a few of the 12 Knights and save Aymeric. In the process, Haucherfant dies protecting you from the beam of light from Ser Zephirin. You learn of Azys Lla at this point, and eventually head to Ok' Zundu, to talk to the Vanu Vanu about Bismarck, as you learn of an Allagan key that tells you how to get ot Azys Lla. Bismarck going crazy eating islands, you make a plan to kill him. But Thordan jumps in, takes the key from you and heads to Azys Lla. Cid having noticed the direction of where the key is headed, heads towards there. We make it to Azys Lla but it is protected by massive aether walls, at this point, there's no advancement into Azys Lla. You learn that Tataru has possible good news about one of the Scions, with the help of Urianger, you find out Y'shtola used Flow, a forbidden spell that lets oneself enter and stay in the aether, when they were being chased by Brass Blades. With the help of A-Ruhn-Senna, Kan-E-Senna and Raya-O-Senna, you manage to get Y'shtola out of the aether and ask her if she could possibly help. She says Matoya, her old mentor, can help, as she is in Sharlayan, you venture to Sharlayan. Arriving at the Dravanian Hinterlands, where Sharlayan is, you need to cross the river to get to Matoya's Cave, which is hidden. Going to Idyllshire, within Sharlayan, you find out goblins have worked alongside treasure hunters to rebuild Sharlayan, or rather what's left of it, with the assistance of Goblins and the residents of Idyllshire, you make it to the other side of the river. You go see Matoya and she asks you to go grab a tome on the subject of manifesting aether as a tangible form, from the Great Gubal Library. You come back with the tome and she deciphers it for you, you take the new information to Cid, Biggs and Wedge and eventually, with the new information, arrive at Azys Lla. At Azys Lla, with the help of a Assistance Node, you make it to the Aetherochemical Research Facility where Thordan awaits, but not before the Garleans interrupt you with their massive ship. But Shiva and Hrasevelgr jump in and stall their plans. You go into the facility and get interrupted by Lahabrea and Igeyorhm. You fight them, they merge, you fight 'it'. And then, with the Eye of Nidhogg and white magicite, you kill Igeyorhm. But Thordan shows up, with Haldrath's coffin and the SECOND Eye of Nidhogg and uses it and your other eye to basically summon King Thordan and the Knights twelve; Knights of the Round, more or less. You slay King Thordan and the Knights twelve, Estinien succumbs to Nidhogg's eyes, and turns into Nidhogg. Now, brief peace is brought to Ishgard, and Ishgard joins the Eorzean Alliance. You now learn that Elidibus has 'summoned' a Warrior of Darkness on the moon. Then a big primal is awoken at the end, teasing DragonSong.

State of the Realm #64 - Evil Moogles, Fan Festival & Live Letter Predictions by DREAM Network
Part 4 of our playthrough of Final Fantasy IX opens with some questions: What would a date with Zidane be like? We explore this nightmare possibility, We do some Frog Hunting and pick up the terrifying, H.R. Pufnstuf-alike Quina, a blue mage comic relief character in a game with no real need for either. Fortunately grinding out her blue magic is pretty fun, if you have a FAQ. John gets confused by the blue X being no and red O being yes when meeting the quiz-master Ragtime Mouse, who is not a mouse but actually is a horrible pair of lips on a spindly body. Chocobo Hot & Cold makes John really, really angry, but he plays it for a couple of hours anyway because he makes terrible decisions with his life. We start finding a whole lot of dead Burmecians, rescue some moogles, and then destroy Gizamaluke using a tent as a weapon, which may be the strangest item animation and use ever. Also: don't climb up those vines in the Grotto. Just don't do it. Please. No. Meanwhile Garnet is a pickle suprise as she's stuffed in a sack like a whole lot of sorries. Burmecia has been slaughtered, which makes Freya kind of sad, especially since she's all missing her boyfriend. Matt calls her clingy. But! But! We finally meet Kuja! Is Kuja the most impractically dressed Final Fantasy character or the most impractically dressed male Final Fantasy character? Matthew is surprisingly unphased by this new villain, which disappoints Jim and John immensely. We wrap up with Squarely Against and questions from you, our listeners! If you'd like us to read your questions about this game, other JRPGs, or advice to help you and your family, especially in tax season. If you are playing along at home, in this episode we play from leaving Lindblum through Gizamaluke's Grotto until the end of Burmecia. Next time we'll play through until the dark, sketchy city of Treno! See you there.
This week, we interview Daniel Burke of the Beacause Project. The Beacause Project is a long running re translation effort of Final Fantasy VII. Daniel discusses the biggest motivators behind the translation effort. He talks about all the lost moments in Final Fantasy VII. Daniel did more than discuss the simple grammatical and spelling errors of Final Fantasy VII. Hi, guys! Just had the interview and it was a lot of fun. I'll respond to questions here that we didn't manage to talk about and I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did What were your first thoughts when playing FF7 the first time? I had just had a Playstation bought for Christmas 1997 and had come from playing the Sega Megadrive games. I was not prepared for the cinematic FMV opening of FF7 in the slightest. It was way ahead of anything else I had ever seen. The music, the sound, the graphics, the direction - everything. I was awestruck. Then the game started and it just kept getting better. I'm actually getting warm feelings right now thinking about it, and this despite the hours I've already ploughed into the game. The thing that irritated me (the only thing) were the random battles. I wasn't used to that and it bugged me at first - so much so that I couldn't beat Gi Nattak in Cosmo Canyon because I had already escaped around 300 times by that point. I learned to get over my irritation of the random battles from that point on, though. Funnily enough, years later I learned I could have just used that Elixir you can pick up beforehand, rather than go outside and level up. Shame. Although I'd only have gotten stuck again at Materia Keeper. At some point, I realized that this was the greatest game I had ever played. Imho, the game that has come closest in overall excellence since is Final Fantasy X (FF8-9 are great, as is Resident Evil II, MGS1, Sonic and Knuckles, Mario 3, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time...I better stop there, there are so many). What did you think of the final dungeon and final boss(es) of FF7? Too easy and rather bizarrely (pun) shoehorned into the game. But FFs have a habit of doing that with final bosses... Necron, anyone? The music for the three bosses is great, and Sepher Sephiroth is awesome. Even his intro is brilliant. As for the final dungeon, it was brilliantly made and executed. All the way down that chasm I had hairs standing on end. What did you think of One Winged Angel the first time you heard it? I wasn't ready for the choir, that was a surprise. It's one of the greatest in game music history. I personally put it second only to FF7's main theme. It's the genius of Uematsu. In the early days, I was also rather fanboyish, so I tried to add my own voice to it with my cousins', lmao. I opened the disc holder on intro because I realized that the voice files might be being loaded at a later time. I was right. But it doesn't help because instead of the orchestra voices, you get a weird droning tone instead. -Has he ever seen the Spanish translation of this game? If you mean the original one, no... but I don't know Spanish, so it wouldn't help. Someone is using our translation to create a new Spanish translation, too. So that's cool! I do recall that the Spanish version, and numerous others, used the English localization instead of the Japanese. So it was a double whammy. The French version is also terrible. - Phoenix Down vs Phoenix Tail, while i love most of the translations and while i am sure this one is based on sound reasoning, i can't help feel it is uneccesary. This is unlike Aerith to Aries which they later corrected in other games, Phoenix Down has always been translated as such even up to the newest releases. I would have just put this in the same group as the Moogles, something that while it may not be an exact translation but that has been more or less cemented as what that is. It's a fair point, but there is a logical reason for the decision I made. From the start, the plan was to localize it based entirely on the Japanese, using the original English localization, and other documentation, to do the best job we could. I, and the translator, agreed that putting limits on what was - and was not - acceptable would end up having a detrimental effect on the project. At the end of the project, I added options to restore certain names because they had a rich history with the series. These were a minority, but I think definitely a good idea. You can change Last Elixir to Megalixir, Moguri to Moogle, and Phoenix Tail to Phoenix Down with the installer options. So no loss at all. As for Aeris, even if someone didn't like Aerith, they could just rename her at the naming screen. What was your most difficult text map to work on in ff7? There are a few: For language: Pagoda. You'll see why in the interview. For flow: The very first main scene with all the exposition ("No, Jessie he's not with Shin-Ra anymore", and so on). The Aerith death scene was also very difficult to make flow right. I'm still not 100% happy with it, but I think this is an original writing issue and not my fault. Script error: If you lose at Fort Condor during Huge Materia mission, you see a cutscene where all the villagers have died, and it was not localized properly at all. I assume that because dying there was almost impossible, no tester saw the scene. It needed reprogramming. Ifalna scene at Icicle Lodge: Flow here again, too, because the text was not in order in the map (this happened from time to time) and making all that exposition flow correctly and sound good was challenging. It had probably 5-8 revisions. It sounds great now, I'm happy to say! Which character in ff7 was the easiest to work on? Yuffie. All the characters were originally localized quite well as far as 'feel' is concerned. Barrett was a bit over the top, though. Yuffie was easiest because I have a friend who is just like her. It was a breeze and really fun to localize that character. One scene where the dialogue is completely nonsensical is the following: {YUFFIE} “Are you waiting for {CLOUD}?”{NEW} “He's flying right now, so you can't get him.”{NEW} “Were you going to force me into the submarine right now?”{NEW} “Quit it! If you want to go, then just leave me behind.”{NEW} “…ooooooh. What're you talking about? I…” New: {YUFFIE} “{CLOUD}… Have you decided where we're going yet?”{NEW} “Come on,I can't take much more of this.”{NEW} “Hey,you're not thinking of shovin' me in that crappy sub,are you!?”{NEW} “I won't go! Never! Leave me here, leave me here!”{NEW} “…Urrrk. What am I saying?” *note, I've made the game add spaces after commas. Since you have accomplished your goal of ff7 was there a game in the past not including ff7 where the dialogue aggrivated you to almost the point of translating it? No Man I guess the remake of FF7 puts a bit of a downer on this guy work Not at all. Although I'd be far happier if I was the director of the remake and could use our localization. Or, at the least, use our localization. But the remake is going to be very different and I think our work will still be relevant after it is released. Once the hype dies down, I believe mass apathy will set in (you'll see why I think that from interview), and more people will want to play the original at that point - not less. I've also learned how to program in assembly, localize, and lots of other skills from this project that made it worthwhile - even if everyone hated it or never played it. Thanks everyone. Let me know how you find the interview. Edit: Oh, one other thing. I didn't mention that other people contributed to the project. Prince Lex helped with Scottish (being a Scot) and Covarr did a thorough grammar check. He also helps me from time to time outside of the project The pagoda scene absolutely needed Covarr's input to make sure we hadn't made mistakes with the older English. So yeah, check the credits list too. I also suggest waiting for R04, if you are planning on going through the game. That will be the last main update to translation / menu.

Japanese role-playing games specialise in grandeur. Epic tales of warring nations that often involve the direct intervention of godly beings, the genre usually entertains even if the execution doesn't match its lofty ambitions. Final Fantasy XVI is one such game. Despite a grimdark fantasy setting that stumbles on multiple fronts it's the combat and overall spectacle that truly exhilarates.Sharing more in common at times with the Devil May Cry series and God of War reboots than its predecessors, Final Fantasy XVI is a fascinating shakeup of a long-beloved franchise. Many legacy touchstones persist, like the summons system – in addition to adorable Chocobos and Moogles – but the epic action-based combat is an unlikely highlight.Series admirers Adam Christou (SIFTER, Triple R) and Persephone Ranson (GamesHub) join this episode of DROP RATE to discuss just how the Final Fantasy series got to this point, and why despite its problems, XVI captivates more than it grates. We don't even mention naked chain-bound muscly protagonists, but that we were all definitely thinking of them. You can listen to DROP RATE wherever you get your podcasts from, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.A copy of Final Fantasy XVI on PlayStation 5 was provided to SIFTER for the purpose of this review discussion. You can support SIFTER's independent gaming journalism by:☕ Tipping us on KoFi https://www.ko-fi.com/sifterHQ
