What happens when misinformation and journalistic integrity collide? In this episode of "Try That in a Small Town," we open with a sincere apology, clarifying false claims about Tootsies' policies and reflecting on the importance of verifying our sources. We also find it crucial to issue an apology to Steve Smith, the owner of Tootsies, and learn from our missteps. With a diverse musical upbringing spanning country, rock, pop, red dirt, blues, and 90s rock, Danny Spiro showcases his unique take on country music through high-octane performances that captivate audiences with infectious enthusiasm, igniting the crowd. With his slightly rough-around-the-edges yet charismatic southern charm, this blue-collar musician is one you can't help but root for. Hailing from humble roots in Mobile, Alabama, and with aspirations to one day grace the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage, Danny made the bold move to Nashville, TN, to carve out his path to success. A defining moment at the age of 14 was witnessing an electrifying performance by a local band that had achieved success: 3 Doors Down. Feeling the pulsating energy of the venue and witnessing the intense engagement of the crowd left a lasting impression, igniting Danny's desire to evoke similar emotions in others. Teaming up with acclaimed drummer and producer Grady Saxman, whose credits include Luke Combs, Dustin Lynch, Trey Lewis, Muscadine Bloodline, Kassi Ashton, and Uncle Kracker, Danny is poised to make waves with his upcoming music. From intimate songwriter rounds where Danny showcases his storytelling prowess to being a sought-after performer on Nashville's famed Broadway strip, he dazzles audiences at renowned establishments such as Blake Shelton's Ole Red, Miranda Lambert's Casa Rosa, Tootsies, Big Machine, Bus Call Showcase - Tin Roof Midtown, FGL House, Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson's, Kid Rock's, and Jason Aldean's. And this is just the beginning. Excited to listen to Danny Spiro's music? Keep an ear out for his highly anticipated EP, slated for release later in 2025. Merry Christmas! What an amazing time we have had working our way towards Christmas together. I love sharing these special episodes on the “A Cup of Gratitude” podcast. This last week, we will see what Jesus' name and title have to tell us about who came to save the world. I share with you things you have not heard before and, the power and purpose of names in the Bible and how they tell an extremely important part of the story. We started on week one, looking at how and when you were created with purpose, followed by week two, where we inspected the soil of the heart and the necessary gardening we must do to have good soil. Then, last week, we were challenged to consider who could be fed by the edges of our harvest fields. Finally, this week, I reveal some powerful truths about the deity and the mercy of the great, all-encompassing love of Jesus Christ. You won't want to miss this final encouragement for Christmas. Be sure to listen, and I know you will have an all-new appreciation for the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. This week, I feature another beautiful song by Laurel Taylor. So let's listen and consider the miracle of Jesus coming to Us all! This week, we have special music by Laurel Taylor, an artist, producer, and singer/songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from Alabama, she moved to Music City twelve years ago, right after turning eighteen. Her voice and sound speak to every crowd, from the American Idol stage to Tootsies on Broadway to the local church leading worship. Laurel carries an excellent stage presence and live show performance everywhere she goes. She has a raw country sound, a ministry mindset, and her own unique style. Laurel uses her life stories to speak to people through her music and intentionally writes for everyone who listens.WEBSITE: LAURELTAYLORMUSIC.COMINSTAGRAM: @LAURELTAYLOROFFICIALFACEBOOK: LAUREL TAYLORMUSIC: AVAILABLE ON ALL STREAMING PLATFORMSwww.acupofgratitude.org
Welcome to week three of the Christmas Break Special Episodes. This week's question is: Who is being fed by the harvest of your life? Think about it: if you're producing a great harvest and have a fruitful life for the kingdom, if you share the truths you have received from the gospel, can others take from what you produce and be fed? I write books, have a podcast, speak on stage, and share my harvest anywhere I can. When a seed produces a harvest in good soil, it isn't just for the life where the harvest grows; even the very edges of what you produce can feed others - God's ways amaze me! So today, I am challenging you to look for the places where you are leaving some room for people who are hurting and hungry to GLEAN - “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and the sojourner, I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 23:22. Who are the poor and the foreigners near you? Who are the sojourners around your field? This week, we have special music by Laurel Taylor, an artist, producer, and singer/songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from Alabama, she moved to Music City twelve years ago, right after turning eighteen. Got a lot of things that are going on and, on today’s podcast, we have the privilege of speaking with Bryan Deese, muralist and street artist. Bryan, welcome to the podcast! Bryan Deese 1:03 Hello! Thanks for having me. John Haggard 1:04 Glad to have you! Before we learn about what a muralist and street artist is and does, tell us a little about you. Are you from Gallatin? Bryan Deese 1:14 I’m from Nashville. I grew up in Nashville, kind of all over that area, and then have been up in Gallatin now for about 10 years. John Haggard 1:22 So from Nashville. Where did you go to school in high school here? Bryan Deese 1:27 Well, I went to two schools. I went to Franklin Road Academy in South Nashville, with my area. And then I graduated from Hillsboro High School in the Green Hills area of Nashville, John Haggard 1:39 The Burros, I think they call that, or something like that. Bryan Deese 1:41 Absolutely, full of pride. John Haggard 1:42 Yeah. Was that a good football team when you were there? Bryan Deese 1:48 Not great when I was there. They have gotten a lot better with the coach they have. Fitzgerald has had a lot of success and they won a state championship after I left. But the Gallatin handed it to them pretty well the last season. John Haggard 2:01 So a muralist and street artist, I guess maybe, before we really dive into that, how would you define that term? If somebody says, “Well, what is a muralist and a street artist?” Bryan Deese 2:13 Yeah, mural artist mural list is anyone who’s painting murals and that could include indoors or outdoors. Street art is more specifically refers to the outdoors and painting, you know, on the streets where people walking, driving can see the work. John Haggard 2:33 From Nashville, how did you wind up in Gallatin? Bryan Deese 2:37 Well, I was living in Madison in 2007. And the recession hit and Madison got really shady there. I kind of starting to have a family and looking for greener pastures and found them at little Northeastern Gallatin and moved out here and have loved it and really embrace this community and just enjoy a lot of things about it. And so that’s kind of what brought us out here. John Haggard 3:05 And when you moved to Gallatin, what was the very first thing you did in terms of employment? Bryan Deese 3:09 At that point, I went to school for graphic design. So I had worked professionally as a graphic designer for years out of college, and I went to the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville. John Haggard 3:24 Go, Orange! Bryan Deese 3:24 Yeah, definitely go Vols for life. Did the graphic design thing for a long time, always kept painting on the side. My kind of painting was graffiti. I came up kind of doing that for fun and adventure. And through that had just learned to paint big and self-taught and through friends picked up a lot of other mural techniques, and just kept painting and painting. And that’s what I was doing though, when I was first arriving in Gallatin. I was still doing graphic design full time and murals on the side. John Haggard 4:02 So how did you actually get into painting murals? Is it something when you were a little boy and you said, Wow, that’s a cool thing. Look at that over there. How did, you know, where did this the artistry, I guess, come out? Bryan Deese 4:15 Well, it was an evolution for sure. But one of the first things in art that really struck me was a mural and it was by a famous Nashville artist Red Grooms. So he’s a big-time pop artist, and this was the Tennessee State Museum was doing a retrospective, maybe its 30th or 40th anniversary of, you know, kind of his career launch. And I went there on a field trip and he created a whole environment that you entered in and I was just blown away. You went down some escalators and there were murals on the sidewalls and then sculpture that you walked into and entered and just took over the environment but in a fun, playful way. It wasn’t a way that would go over a kid’s head, even though if you look at his work, there’s nothing childish about it. It is professional and incredible through and through, every aspect. But it struck me – that stayed with me. And I followed other contemporaries of his, like Myles Maillie and Norris Hall. These are other Nashville painters that were a bit illustrative, worked big. I saw them doing murals around. They work very colorful, and with a black outline. And then, through skateboarding and music, at some point, in high school, I was introduced to graffiti art. Bryan Deese 5:41 And it kind of had all of those same things. It was big, colorful, illustrative, blackout lines, and it had some adventure mixed in. So, I was drawn to that right away. And it was also based on typography and that was the graphic design side of me. As a kid who, you know, designed my own baseball cards and designed my own sneakers. Yeah, so those worlds kind of combined with some fun and adventure. It’s what you’re looking for as a teenager. And I followed that route for a while, and there was never a thought that this is something you’d make money on. But I didn’t just quit. I just took it up a notch or two, and started doing portraits, started doing bigger, more objective things and less of the letter-based graffiti stuff. More what you would consider street art, and just elevating it a little bit as I went along. And eventually, at some point, I just decided this is what I’m going to do this is paying as much or more than the graphic design and I’m going to jump out there and actually call myself an artist. And… John Haggard 6:57 Wow! Yeah, because there’s that phrase that we all hear -starving artist. Great work but a starving artist. And that, you may have starved a little bit maybe but you know you didn’t have that job you said. So you were doing this on the side and then it like as you said you just finally the dollars were there. Bryan Deese 7:14 Yeah and I absolutely had that instilled in me from my parents, too. Maybe not so much my parents but just society as a whole is like it’s a very hard thing to earn a living at – and it is! And so, yeah, I’d always heard starving associated with the word artists. So I look to do something that would fulfill my creative chops but would pay the rent. And then on the side, like I said, I was always doing this stuff that I never thought there’d be an income that it was just fun. Like a lot of people they don’t get into bass fishing, because they think there’s a future in bass fishing, they just enjoy the hobby. So that’s kind of how I approached it, but at some point what I was doing caught on. And a lot of that’s probably based on social sharing online. But people were coming to me to “can you paint big?”. And so yeah, it was a slow transition from full-time graphic design to full-time mural artist with a lot of crossover years, where, you know, in between. John Haggard 8:18 You know, I heard this motivational speaker Tony Robbins, you’re familiar with him? He says, follow your passion, and the money will follow you. And it sounds like you had a lot of passion and you thought, Well, you know, I’m going to try to make this thing work. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. I’ve got a backup plan. But nonetheless, the passion really seemed to drive you would you say speaking of passion and inspiration, you mentioned Red Grooms? Would he be someone you would consider a major inspiration was to you that got you to the next level or who would you consider that to be? Bryan Deese 8:50 He was a big one because what I didn’t know when I was eight or nine years old on that field trip – well, I wasn’t even there. It was in high school who I figured out who I’d been looking at on that field trip. And it was kind of, “Oh, Red Grooms graduated from Hillsboro High School.” So then that all of a sudden kind of did click with me that you could do it. People from your high school walk in the same halls or you’re reading about them in art history books, you know, it’s not that far-fetched. So and then, as far as the street art stuff goes, there were some conversations I had and people that, artists that I really respected, who came along and did the same job that I had done two years previously. For example, Bonnaroo, I painted some fences at Bonnaroo. And two years later, one of my favorite artists, Steve Powers, he came and painted the fences at Bonnaroo. And so that made me think “Okay, you’re on the right trajectory.” At that point. I was still doing graphic design also. And when a door would open like Bonnaroo would call and say “We’ve got these miles of linear fence. Got any ideas on how to paint something cool?” I’d walk through those doors, I would execute and somewhere in the middle of it, I panic, you know? How am I gonna get this done? You know, I’ve bitten off more than I could chew, but you just stay the course and, and work hard and get through that door and shut it behind you. Hopefully, you know, it worked out well. Bonnaroo did. And then you hope the next door you’re ready for the next door in front of you. And you just keep going. And that’s what I’ve done. John Haggard 10:35 What are some of the more exciting projects that you’ve worked on recently? Bryan Deese 10:39 2019 I had some really cool projects. First and foremost, the NFL Draft came to Nashville. And the NFL Network contacted me to do some murals on the side of Tootsies, the famous Honky Tonk on Broadway and on the back of Honky Tonk Central. And then NFL films recorded it. And it was the very first thing they aired a little two-minute package, right as their draft coverage kicked off. John Haggard 11:11 Wow, that was you? Bryan Deese 11:13 Yeah, and then they shared it with their social. So that was a really cool one. Bonnaroo Music Festival. I painted their iconic fountain the past year. And so those were two really cool ones. I did two really great murals in Gallatin that I’m proud of. So, and some really good work for the Country Music Hall of Fame. They’re one of my steady clients that I do, you know, anywhere from eight to 10 murals a year for. John Haggard 11:44 So in Gallatin, where are those murals? Bryan Deese 11:47 Well, I’ve got three murals in Gallatin. One is in Thompson Park, which is right next to the skate park. And it is a mural of Ray Underhill Jr. and Ray was Tennessee’s first professional skateboarder, and he grew up in Hendersonville in Gallatin. When he packed his car up and drove out to California to chase the dream, he was living in Gallatin. And sadly, Ray passed away from cancer. And so that’s a memorial a thank you to Ray Underhill. And then on the side of Chubbs Sports Bar, and Old Soul Tattoo, I’ve got two murals, they actually face each other. One is a history of the trains and trolleys in Gallatin. And then the other is about the 1970 basketball game between the segregated high schools at the time, Gallatin High School and Union High School. And that’s an incredibly interesting story. q2A`There’s a book about it, maybe plans to do a movie. But those are the three murals that I’ve got in Gallatin right now, and hopefully, we’ll do some more soon. John Haggard 13:07 So Brian, where do you get your ideas on what to paint? Bryan Deese 13:11 Well, a lot of that comes down to how much creative control I’ve got on each project. Some of the projects that I do, I don’t have any creative control, or here’s an album cover, we want to paint it on this wall, and it’ll stay there for three months. And I execute those and I keep it going. When I’ve got complete creative control, and that’s when I’m the most excited on a project as any creative would be. And when I’ve got complete creative control, I like to paint about history that’s very specific to the location I’m painting at. So you know, Ray Underhill next to the skatepark in Gallatin, that makes sense because of the history of who Ray Underhill is to skateboarding in Gallatin. The trains and the trolleys, the location of that Old Soul Tattoo, the wall right next to the Palace Theater, the back entrance, it’s in between the railroad tracks and then where the trolley tracks were on just down the alley. So I like to paint about history because I’m a history buff. And so if you let me paint about anything, it’s going to be generally a giant portrait about history that’s very specific to the location I’m painting. Bryan Deese 13:14 How would you say the support has been in Gallatin for what you’re doing? Bryan Deese 14:35 It’s really been incredible, especially the mayor’s office. When I approached them initially about the Ray Underhill project and the train with the train and trolley mural, the codes would not allow for murals in Gallatin. So we started with the Ray Underhill project because it was actually in the parks. It’s a park property that lays a little bit outside of the jurisdiction of code so they didn’t need to change the codes to actually execute that one. So then we’re able to show some community support and how murals can impact a community positively. And then with that, they took that effort and energy and passed and changed the Gallatin City codes as far as murals go. So now, and then they applied for and got a grant for me to paint the train mural and the basketball mural. So, and then the public at large has been incredibly supportive. Anytime I was painting, I had great conversations with you know, citizens and passers-by and met a lot of great people. In all three of those cases, anytime I was painting, I met a lot of great people. I met Ray Underhill’s family, too. They still live Portland, his parents and brothers, and siblings, and that’s really the most impactful to me is the people I meet when I’m painting. John Haggard 16:11 Yeah. And you know, you mentioned, of course, Gallatin where you live now, Bonnaroo, Downtown Nashville. Do you travel the country or is your work primarily in this area? Bryan Deese 16:22 Well, I do travel. So I head to Florida and Atlanta. There were probably the spots I hit the most. When I was younger, I traveled a lot more. You know, I’ve been to Europe and all over the West Coast and the Northeast Chicago, you know, St. Louis, Kansas City, a lot of cities, painting, and that’s really when it was just a hobby. My professional work though, my home base is Nashville and that’s where the bulk of my work is for sure. John Haggard 16:52 If somebody said, “I want you to paint a portrait of me.” Do you do work for individuals or is it more like what we’ve been talking about? Bryan Deese 17:02 Well, I absolutely could be commissioned. Most of my work now is of a commercial nature. And I’m not exactly cheap, but I absolutely take commissions and I’m worth every penny. John Haggard 17:17 All right, well, there you go. There you go. Bryan, Deese, everybody, we’re talking to. Muralist and street artists. What would you say, Brian, is your favorite painting that you’ve ever done out of all of them? Bryan Deese 17:29 Well, one that was dear to me was a Johnny Cash mural that was in downtown Nashville, that my friends and I would actually paint the wall very first in May in 1998, with like a surrealist desert kind of scene. But then, when Johnny Cash passed away, immediately we painted a memorial mural for him. And that was in 2003. We redid the mural in 2012 whether it just has taken its toll. A lot of people so new to the area, they don’t realize that the area of downtown Nashville flooded in 2010. And that really took a right toll on that mural. Um, yeah. So we redid that and in 2012 and it was perfectly located downtown. It was a joke. It was the last of a little one-story block buildings in you know, south of Broadway. And it was on American Idol and National Geographic Channel and Macy’s campaign, it just got a lot of traction. It was on all the Titans home games when it was a local CBS broadcast it was kind of just became part of their Stock B roll footage. So, unfortunately, like I said it was the last of but it’s unfortunately got knocked down last year. And some of my friends from the Country Music Hall of Fame, pulled aside some of the, the blocks of some of it, and I’ve saved them. But it was only a matter of time that property was worth too much to just be a block little block building. So now it’s like a two or three-story bar. John Haggard 19:17 So for 2020 as we enter the New Year, what big plans do you have? What’s going on anything local, more regional work. What’s happening? Bryan Deese 19:25 Well, one thing I’m really excited, I’m almost hesitant to talk much about it because I’m very much in the initial phases and it’s year one, but I’m going to do a little mural festival in Gallatin at the end of May. And what a mural festival is, is pretty simple. It’ll be anywhere from three to six, this year I’m just kind of starting small to get going on, but three to six murals being worked on by different artists at the same time over the course of a weekend. So you can come in, it’ll be roughly in the same location, so you could come and park your car and walk around and watch these different artists execute the murals. And, so the mayor’s office again, they’re being extremely supportive. And that’s something I’m planning. And then I’m filling up my calendar for 2020 and got some really great jobs and really excited to keep working with the Country Music Hall of Fame. They allow me to paint the icons of Nashville, and that excites me for sure. And hopefully, some other great ones. Some of them, they’re not exactly under contract yet, so I don’t want to jinx them by talking about them. But I’ve got a lot of really great projects coming for 2020. But the most – the thing I’m the most excited about is the mural festival. I’m going to start in Gallatin. John Haggard 20:51 And that’s in May, you said? Bryan Deese 20:52 End of May. So and I’m still on the date. I’m still waiting to hear back from the mayor that we’re not competing with any other long-standing Gallatin events that might conflict with it. But right now they said, it looks like the calendar is pretty open. So I think that’s going to be our date. John Haggard 21:13 So Brian, what would you say your favorite thing about living in Gallatin is? Bryan Deese 21:19 Oh man, there’s so many great things. I love where my kids go to school Sumner Academy. They really care about educating kids. And also just having socially the skills my kids are learning there are second to none. I love Gallatin Square. I like to go down to the square especially in the spring in the summer. When the flowers are the flower pots are out and you’ve got the splashes of pinks and purples violets around and I love to go to Jim Bose records on the square and pick out some old vinyl, maybe go to Phillies on the square and get a funnel Cake they’re delicious and play some games with the kids on my studio in Gallatin. It’s right by the bowling alley and bought my kids and bowling shoes and we go bowling a lot. That’s a lot of fun. And right there, too, I love Old Glory restaurant that’s kind of our greasy spoon diner and definitely love being a regular at all these spots around Gallatin. It’s pretty much everywhere I go now I’m a regular they don’t know what I do. They just know my face. John Haggard 22:28 What would you say of all the things that you have going on in 2020, If you can talk about it, is the most, I guess you would say, the most exciting thing that’s going to happen or that that you’re going to do or that really excites you the most for 2020? Bryan Deese 22:43 Well, I’m hoping to do the Bonnaroo fountain again, I’m trying to turn that into an annual contract. It used to be that they would hire an artist that would come in and they would design and paint the fountain and it would be totally separate from how the festival looks. Now they’re having the designer who designs the overall look for the festival that year as far as ticketing and marketing and all of that. They also design the fountain, but they don’t necessarily have the skills to execute the painting and Bonnaroo doesn’t even want them to have to worry about that. So I always call that my summer art camp anytime I go and spend a week out at Bonnaroo. I come back dark, suntanned, and about 10 pounds lighter. John Haggard 23:34 So let me ask you this one question. What would you say, Brian, the one thing that people don’t know about you, but they would be really surprised to find out about you. Bryan Deese 23:47 I’m big on the number two and things the power of two. So two times two is four times two is eight times two is 16 times two, 32. And doing all kinds of weird little number things in my head, that all break down to number in twos and the power of twos. So that’s some Rain Man autistic kind of side of me a little bit. But it fascinates me even myself is why do I need to stop the pump at 1616 or whatever I’m pumping, you know? So that’s something that is weird. And not a lot of people would know. John Haggard 24:31 If somebody wants to get in contact with you, Brian, what’s the best way to connect? Bryan Deese 24:37 My website is bryandeese.art. And it’s a really simple little site just with some images that slide through. And then there’s two buttons. One is a email that goes directly to my inbox, and the other takes you to my Instagram account which is more of a rolling portfolio of my work. So emailing me through my website is really the best way. bryandeese.art John Haggard 25:05 All right, and we know Bryan is, in your case B-R-Y-A-N. John Haggard 25:10 That’s right. John Haggard 25:11 Got it . Well, that’s Bryan Deese everybody, muralist and street artist on today’s Miracle Ford podcast. We’ve already talked about Where to Stay in Nashville, but what are you going to do while you are there? You probably know Nashville is famous for country music and nightlife, but there is more to Nashville than that. Downtown Nashville is often called Nashvegas because of all of the amazing bars, restaurants, and venues. We suggest fun ideas whether you are into shopping, sports, or dancing. We break down some of the more famous night spots and honky tonks in the area. It’s even possible to have a sighting of a favorite artist or two while you are out. Some of these places are even owned by stars like Luke Bryan, John Rich, Kid Rock and more. We also talk about local attractions other than bars and some really fun family ideas that are two hours or less away. If you are planning a Nashville trip, we have tons of fun ideas and suggestions for you to explore. Show Notes: [04:48] Nashvegas or downtown. Nashville hosted the 2019 NFL draft and showcased everything that Nashville has to offer. [05:18] Lower Broadway or 2nd and Broadway is known for the Honky Tonks. [05:46] Honky Tonks usually have country music and some type of line dancing. It's typically people dressed in western gear but they don't have to be. [07:21] There are a lot of blocks in this four block area. [07:36] Some iconic bars include Tootsies, The Stage, Legends, and Roberts. These are the Honky Tonks right behind the Ryman which was originally the Grand Ole Opry. After shows, people like Johnny Cash would head out and have a drink at these places. [08:35] There's all kinds of great local talent, plus you never know who you'll see there. [09:11] There are also bars created by big stars like Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Kid Rock. There's the Redneck Riviera bar which isn't far away from Mount Richmore where Jon Rich lives. [10:54] There are also some great places to dance in Lower Broadway like Acme Feed & Seed, Bourbon Street Blues, and Skulls Rainbow Room. [11:15] Wildhorse Saloon line dance has line dance lessons. They also have other dancing and great fun times. [12:03] Nashville is a great place to see your team. Nissan Stadium where the Titans play their home games is right downtown. [13:12] The Country Music Hall of Fame is also in this area. As well as, the Nashville Convention Center and Johnny Cash Museum. [14:15] There's a lot of great shops. You can get boots, souvenirs, and music. Local boutiques include Nash collection and southernaire Market. [14:49] We like to drive around and look for the Elvis Statue. [15:57] Get around in style in a Nashville Pedal Pub. We recommend the motorized ones. [18:06] You can also get pulled around by a tractor that pulls a flatbed. It's like a hay ride, but there are seats and a bartender. [20:06] There are all kinds of rolling parties like buses without tops. They also have golf cart taxis that help you bar hop safely. [22:59] There are also many great tours in and around Nashville. The Ryman hosts concerts and events, and you can get a tour. [23:43] The Centennial Park Parthenon is another great sight. [24:29] The current Grand Ole Opry is near the Opryland Hotel and the Opry Mills Mall. [25:54] You could also have a dinner cruise on the General Jackson Showboat. [26:39] If you don't mind going a little further away, you could go on the Jack Daniel's Distillery tour. [27:58] Arrington Vineyards has their own wine. It's a beautiful place. Kicks Brooks is one of the owners. [29:16] We also have Old Hickory Lake. You can rent boats and find your own private sand bar to hang out on. [31:37] Mammoth Cave National Park has bike trails and Cave tours. [32:21] Land Between the Lakes is the largest stretch of untouched forest on the East Coast. [33:31] If you go two hours south to Huntsville Alabama, there is a fantastic Space and Rocket Center. [34:33] Eat at Rosie's Cantina when you are in Huntsville. [35:59] Rock Island State Park is actually on our list of places to go. It looks gorgeous. [37:15] If you head towards Memphis, you will find the Pinson Mounds. These are Native American burial and ceremonial mounds. There's also an archaeological park there. Every few months, we collect some of our favorite tunes and throw them together for a wonderful little recap we like to call REPLAY. We used to do replays on our shows, but people told us they didn’t get it, so we figured it’d be better to do it this way. Our BEST OF shows are stupid popular, so the best way for us to promote indie artists is to do these periodic collections, so that’s what we’re doing here. So there. First off, INDIECON! Moving along nicely, still time to enter at www.indieoriginalslive.com. Second, did you know our host Chuck Fresh is the voice of Sirius XM radio? You knew I sounded familiar, didn’t you… whatever.Third, there was some sad news in the IOL community last month. As Fast As I Can by Cigarettes and Roses 28Jenny Pagliaro — Massachusetts native, Santa Monica yoga instructor, lead singer of Roses & Cigarettes — -- succumbed to metastatic breast cancer at just 35 years old. Angela Petrilli recalls auditioning for a cover band Jenny fronted. “It was like I knew her my whole life. She’d always be the first person I’d hear from every day. Every. Single. Day. Always checking in, sending each other funny pictures, song ideas, shared plans back and forth on how we were gonna become rock stars…” Jenny beat back cancer in 2015, after Roses and Cigarrets released their self-titled debut album, but in 2016 she was diagnosed as Stage 4. When she returned to performing, one of her yoga students was surprised to find his teacher rocking onstage. She was an inspiration to a lot of people. Last January, Pagliaro had to stop teaching, and pretty much everything else, as she struggled with fatigue and prayed a last-ditch Y90 treatment would be “a light in a very dark tunnel.” Their last EP, “Echoes and Silence” was released in February, which accompanied the “Fast As I Can” video with Jenny’s comment that the song was “about not letting the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced stop you from living your dreams.” Here’s one out to Jenny, and any other people who are living with cancer, or who have lost someone to cancer. Here’s Cigarettes and Roses with AS FAST AS I CAN on IOL.Whisper In The Mist by Alto Key 21Alto Key is a British indie folk artist, led by singer-songwriter Keyan Barton. Barton actually got a scholarship when he went to university. He bought all the essentials for his degree and accommodations. But rather than saving the leftover money (like someone with common sense), he blew the rest on this keyboard. And thank goodness he did. Barton works with other musicians around the world to record and collaborate. Their emphasis on the beauty of real instruments makes for a warm acoustic sound. Check out this gorgeous track called Whisper In The Mist by Alto Key on IOL.Warning Signs by Chasing Shadows 22Chasing Shadows grew up in a town that has seen better days. Their journey started in August 2014 at the Kings Head in Rhuddlan, North Wales, and since then, Sam, Ben, Russ & Chris have been producing powerful harmonic songs that’ll stick in your ears for hours to come. Their new EP, Darker Days, sees the band return to their rockier roots. ‘Warning Signs’ was released first, with the track receiving placement on indie stations all over the world. Here’s Warning Signs by Chasing Shadows on Indie Originals Live. Facedown by 14 North (22)14 North is a Rock band from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Their first single “Go” was released on August 14 2018, and the rest, as they say, will be history. This is an awesome song! While she may be petite in stature, Shelby Lentz has a voice that will fill any venue. Shelby's talent was recognized at an early age and by fourteen, she was singing the National Anthem at local sporting venues, performed for the first time at the Wild Bull Saloon and earned over 100,000 votes in Bob Kingsley's Future Star online competition. It would not take long before she was grabbing the attention of others in the industry and at just fifteen she opened at The State Theater in Kalamazoo for Warner Music artist, Frankie Ballard. It was also about this time that she began collaborating with local song writers on original music as well. She went on to also open for former American Idol finalist, Matt Giraud, as well as international recording artist, Joanne Shaw Taylor. Shelby spent two years pursuing music in Nashville, Tennessee where she attended Belmont University and worked at the Grand Ole Opry. She recorded two studio EPs while in Nashville and performed on Broadway at the famous Tootsies. Her second EP, entitled “Unbroken” features a song called “Champion” Lentz co-wrote with her friend, Jessica Kellie Adams, inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa films. After the diagnosis of Huntington’s Disease in her family, and being recently diagnosed herself, she began her own nonprofit, “Champions for HD” to help aid research as well as other local families struggling with this disease. This was named in honor of her song “Champion” that is now recognized as an HD power anthem and part of her musical proceeds go back to Champions for HD to further the fight against Huntington’s. Shelby performs a mixture of songs that delight all audiences of all ages. There is no doubt that this little girl packs a powerful punch as an experienced entertainer.

Singer, songwriter, musician... but besides that Mike Godwin is an entertainer. He plays to an audience most nights of the week like he has been on stage all his life. Mike's brand of music is storytelling, with strong harmonies and the influences of greats like the Eagles and Springsteen. In his "Backstage Hall Pass" interview Mike shares about growing up with music in his house, his move to Nashville, a new band in the works and his home base for entertaining, Tootsies Orchid Lounge! 'Mom's' was the original name of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, Tootsie Bess bought Mom's in 1960. She credits a painter with naming Tootsie's. She came in one day to find that he had painted her place orchid...thus the name Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. Famous early customers were Kris Kristofferson, Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall, Hank Cochran, Mel Tillis, Roger Miller, Webb Pierce, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline and many more. Performers at the Opry would sometimes sneak out the side door and grab a drink at Tootsie’s between sets. In 1992, local businessman Steve Smith reinvested in Tootsies and is credited for part of the revitalization of downtown Nashville. Today, Tootsies is an international destination visited by locals and tourists alike. Tootsie’s is known for having the best local musicians like Mike and as a haven for some the world’s most popular acts. You truly never know who you may see on one of Tootsie’s three stages or hanging out on the rooftop patio! As an additional bonus segment we bring Melissa Mickelson back to the program to give us an inside view into the Country Crossings Music Festival where she took the stage in front of thousands. Take a listen to the latest in our series of "Backstage" musical journeys and as always you can subscribe to all of our podcasts on our homepage @hallarounbdtownradio.com.
Wipe your tears, put on your Sunday best & listen. Milwaukee’s Liv Mueller is a songstress who has lived in the likes of Nashville, Austin and the fine Midwest. Her vocals are a beautiful combination of sparkle and smoke, taking any listener to another time, when artists like Peggy Lee and Connie Francis reigned. Liv started singing and writing years ago, in a Rockabilly band called The Screaming Lillies; barely 19, she packed up and relocated to herself to Nashville from the Midwest where she performed at places like Tootsies and The Rose Room while supplementing her income occasionally by playing for money on the streets with an open guitar case. Not long after Nashville, Austin became her next home wherein she formed the first incarnation of The Lovelies, reforming the band after returning to the Midwest is where The Lovelies had the most success, recording four records, and playing relentlessly over an eight year span. Two albums were released under her next endeavor, The Dark Horse Project. Production team Marc Hutner and Grant Curry (Pleasure Club) helped her to streamline the new sounds that were galloping in her head, capturing a beautiful and haunted landscape of listening. Recording deep in the south of the Louisiana bayou proved to be just what she needed to redefine her next phase of writing and performing. In the last several years, Liv prefers to play solo, releasing two records – the first solo release entitled Liv Sings: Love Songs For The Forlorn And Misguided, and the most recent (released in spring of 2017), Liv Sings: Light Of The Valley Shadow Of The Mountain; she composed, played, recorded and mixed both albums nearly entirely alone in her home studio.
It's a story we have all heard before. An aspiring musician moves to Nashville, with $200 in his pocket, a truck full of clothes and a big dream. Well, Nick Cross's story may have started out like many, but it sure will not end up like most.Within two hours of arriving on Broadway, he was already on stage at Tootsie's World Famous Orchid Lounge. Within two days he became an official Tootsies performing artist, and within three weeks he had broken attendance records and pulled in more tips than most musicians had ever seen in one night. Pretty impressive for a small town boy from Indiana.Nick was born and raised in Lawrenceville, Illinois and later moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He grew up in a small town, “4900 people is what it says on the sign, but I think they was countin' cats and dogs too.” As far back as age 2 his mother recalls Nick having a passion for music. His father had a country band called The Ghostriders, and numerous cousins and uncles played music as well.“When you go to a family reunion, it's like 100 freakin' guitars. I come from a big musical family”.As a little boy, Nick remembers going to his dad's band practice and fooling around with their equipment and instruments. By age six he had played his first beat. It was a back beat on the drums to “Honkey Tonk Women” by the Rolling Stones. That's when he recalls he got his music bug. From then on, Nick would steal his moms Tupperware bowls and bang on her pots and pans. The following year for Christmas, Nick's parents surprised him with his very own drum set and a note that said, “Stay out of your mom's Tupperware.” He then went on to pick up the guitar, but was primarily a drummer until about age 12. By age 17 he was playing twelve instruments and winning talent competitions, but that wasn't enough for Nick Cross. He wanted to be a singer“I remember praying to God one day going down the road in my truck and I was like, ‘I would give up every instrument I could play, if I could only sing', and then it just hit me like an epiphany. God or my conscience or whatever told me, ‘listen, you didn't learn how to play drums overnight. You didn't learn how to play guitar overnight. You had to work at it and the same thing is gonna be that way for singin..You're gonna have to work at it.”Nick got his first paying gig as a singer at age 18 and started his first band as the front man. Since then, his experience as a musician has led him to songwriting and he can now play over 18 instruments.Undoubtedly talented, Nick's growing success isn't solely attributed to his singing or instrumental skills. Nick is an entertainer.“You have a lot of power when you're on stage. You can make them people sad, you can remind them of a lost loved one, you can fire ‘em up to where they are ready to fight...” “...Someone that's never danced, never breaks outta their shell...you play the right song and that persons gonna jump right outta their chair, look at ya and be like ‘hell yeah dude. I love this song' and it might be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company on vacation here in Nasvhille. And guess what, now he's out there shakin' his ass, wavin his beer up in the air and he's just let life go right out the window.”But Nick captivates his audience with his charisma, not just his talent. He draws them in, connects with them, and plays what he knows they want to hear. It just comes natural for him. Most importantly, he keeps them there. His biggest supporters are his fans.“For every 10 people I meet, 9 people love me. One of them doesn't. One of them thinks I'm too cocky, or they think I'm whatever...just another gimmick. But there is 9 out of 10 that love me”.Although Nick's growing success in Nashville has him performing multiple nights throughout the week, he is also in the recording studio working on his first album. And he feels like he's accomplished a lot in his short time in Nashville, but he's not even close to settling. There is a lot more in store for this country boy.“I don't care if I ever get famous, really, I don't. Singin is something that if it comes [fame], that's cool, if it don't, that's cool too. I just wanna play music for a living instead of swinging a hammer. My whole life that's all I ever thought about doing – being a professional musician. Now I can say that. I'm a Nashville Recording Artist, a country singer, living and playing in Nashville, Tennessee. I mean, I could die right now and be a happy man”But for anyone who knows Nick Cross, he wouldn't die a happy man just yet. He came to Nashville with a goal and that goal won't be fulfilled performing in the bars on Broadway. Nick Cross's career has a long life ahead of it, and there is no slowing down anytime soon.“This town is tough. I mean some musicians aren't even good enough to play Nashville. Some are only good enough to play Nashville and they will never break out of what we call ‘stuck on Broadway'. Well I will guarantee you I will not be ‘stuck on Broadway'. I'm smarter than that, I have more motivation and drive then that.”Like a story we've all heard before. An aspiring musician moves to Nashville, with $200 in his pocket, and a truck full of clothes. He is now watching his dreams unfold before his eyes. His story started out like many, but has certainly exceeded most. And the momentum isn't slowing down.

The apples are green, sweet, juicy, have a thin skin and have the highest vitamin C content of any apple, which helps keep them naturally white for days after cutting. The kanzi is the number one apple sold in Europe and is bright red and crunchy, with a long shelf life — a cross between a gala and braeburn apple. A little about our guests. Linda and Julia originally met in a theater group in Phoenix. Both enjoy singing and acting and they love playing with their fur-baby, a 13 year old dog named Abby. Linda is a self-proclaimed nerd. She loves Phoenix Comicon and with Julia used to run a Phoenix area tour group called Ghosts of Phoenix. Julia is a scuba diver who also enjoys cooking and playing the ukulele. Julia is also Aunt of the Year each year to her 6 nieces and nephews. A little about their business. Julia has been in real estate for 11 years. During some of that same time, Linda was a teacher in Phoenix Title 1 schools. Julia would help in the library at Linda’s school and Linda would return the favor by helping in the real estate office to the extent she could. When Linda decided to get out of teaching, she worked with Julia to get her real estate license and went to work at another real estate office. Several years later, Julia became a Real Estate Broker and Linda came on board as a Broker in her office. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Keep open lines of communication between the two of you. No matter what industry you are in, have open lines of communications. Follow the directions on the boxes, but don't worry too much about pan sizes: we're not going to frost it the normal way! Allow the cakes to cool to room temperature. Prepare the pudding mix. While the cakes are baking, make the pudding, and let chill in the refrigerator. Crumble the white sandwich cookies in small batches. You can use a food processor (scrape often to get every little piece), kitchen mallet, or just crumble them by hand. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of cookie crumbs. You can either mix them together with a fork or shake them together in a closed container such as a jar or Tupperware. Set aside for now. Crumble the room-temperature cakes into a large bowl. Toss gently with half of the remaining white cookie crumbs and enough chilled pudding to moisten (not soak) the crumbs. Make the litter. Add the cake, cookie crumbs, and pudding mixture into a brand new, clean litter box. If you don’t have one, find a large rectangular Tupperware container to act as a stand-in (or sit-in). Temper your Tootsies. Heat three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave-safe dish until they're soft and pliable. Pinch off the ends so they are no longer blunt and look convincingly like what cats put in the litter box. Repeat this process with as many Tootsie rolls as you'd like to add, microwaving them in batches of three. Reserve three for the final garnish. Half-bury the shaped Tootsie rolls in mixture. Sprinkle them with (normal-colored) cookie crumbs to make it look like litter has been kicked onto them. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top. This will mimic real litter, where many of the grains are often blue or green. Heat and shape the last three Tootsie rolls. Scrape them on top of the cake. One can hang over the side of the litter box. Sprinkle them lightly with cookie crumbs to make them look more recent. Eat it up, yum! Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a brand new, washed litter scooper for that extra touch! Serve it with a cow patty for extra yumminess. Take a scoop of chocolate ice cream and flatten it out on the plate. For extra realism, thoroughly mix crumbled shredded wheat with softened ice cream, shape into cow patties, and re-freeze.
