Ford South Africa investing R5.2bn to produce PHEV Ranger model at Silverton plant

On the occasion of celebrating its 100-year anniversary, automotive manufacturer Ford Motor Company South Africa (FMCSA) has announced it will start producing plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) Ranger models at its Silverton, Pretoria, manufacturing facility late next year. The automaker is investing R5.2-billion in expanding its existing facility to accommodate the new models on the same assembly lines as the diesel and petrol vehicles, and in building a dedicated battery pack assembly facility. Particularly, the chassis plant will be upgraded to accommodate the unique chassis configuration of the plug-in hybrid Ranger, including changes to the robots, welding equipment, control systems, conveyors and skids. The PHEV models are destined for export to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, but Ford Middle East & Africa operations VP Ockert Berry is confident that the company will see local uptake of them as well. He tells Engineering News that, with the South African Ford facilities already being geared up to produce Ranger vehicles, it made sense for the group to expand to PHEV Ranger production. It will be the first time in two decades that the Silverton plant will be supplying vehicles to the Australian and New Zealand markets. Berry adds that the plant will initially target production of 30 000 PHEV Ranger units a year and ramp up as required. The plant currently produces about 200 000 vehicles a year, comprising Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok vehicles. The Ranger PHEV will deliver more torque than any other Ranger, owing to a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. It can be driven in pure electric mode for more than 45 km without using a drop of fuel or producing tailpipe emissions. It will provide all the towing and payload capability customers expect of Ranger, along with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, enabling customers to power their tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite by plugging them into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed and the cabin. The latest investment in the plant adds to a total R33-billion that FMCSA has invested at its plants in Silverton, and Struanway, in Gqeberha. Moreover, FMCSA reveals an expanded product range that will be available for purchase in the South African market within the next 18 months, including the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, a seventh-generation Mustang range that will include the most powerful naturally aspirated Mustang to date - the Mustang Dark Horse, an all-new Territory five-seater special utility vehicle and the next-generation Torneo Custom and Transit Custom models. Additionally, Ford will soon launch two new Ranger models, Tremor and Platinum, made specially for the South African market. The Tremor is a more adventure-oriented Ranger model with added off-road functionality, while the Platinum will comprise ultimate driving comfort features. "From humble beginnings that established Ford in South Africa in November 1923, our team and facilities here have grown into a world-class operation that delivers the highest-quality vehicles to our customers in South Africa and around the world," says Ford Motor Company chief dealer engagement officer Elana Ford. As part of the FMCSA centenary celebrations, the company has launched three new community initiatives targeted at maths and science development, early learning development and scholarships. FMCSA and its project partners are creating 100 maths and science laboratories for primary schools around the country, as well as 100 early childhood development centres, while it will fund 100 youth scholarships to promote learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths. South Africa is the fourth country across Ford's manufacturing portfolio to have exceeded 100 years of operations, following the US, Canada and Argentina. It's Monday 14th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VOLKSWAGEN AND FORD EXPAND COLLABORATION ON MEB ELECTRIC PLATFORM - Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group are expanding their e-mobility partnership. Ford plans to produce another electric model for the European market based on the MEB platform - The automaker will also double its planned MEB volume to 1.2 million units over a six-year timeframe. - The first Ford model to use the MEB will be an all-electric crossover. It is expected to roll off the assembly line at the Ford Electrification Center in Cologne from 2023 and will give a further push to the automaker's e-mobility strategy. Ford had originally planned just one model based on MEB with a total volume of around 600,000 units. The company has not yet released any details about the second planned model. - The MEB platform, which can be used by various brands and manufacturers, already provides the technology base for ten electric models from five brands. Used to build approximately 300,000 units in 2021, it is one of the leading electric platforms worldwide. Original Source : https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2022/03/volkswagen-and-ford-expand-collaboration-on-meb-electric-platfor.html FORD TO LAUNCH SEVEN NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN EUROPE BY 2024 - Ford will launch seven new electric vehicles in Europe by 2024, with the three-strong range of new cars spearheaded by a new crossover utilising Volkswagen's MEB platform technology. - The three new electric cars will come under the new Ford Model E division, set up to separate the firm's battery-electric business from its combustion-engined one, now called Ford Blue, as part of a structural shake-up instigated by boss Jim Farley earlier this month. - The first car to be launched is expected to be based on the Volkswagen ID 4 and sit below the Ford Mustang Mach-E in Ford's line-up. It will be built at Ford's new state-of-the-art EV manufacturing centre in Cologne, Germany, launching in 2023 and being described officially as a “medium-sized crossover". - The cars will be joined in Ford's all-electric line-up by the Ford Puma EV, which will be sold as a stand-alone model from 2024. As a result of reworking Ford's production capacity to achieve this, the Ford Ecosport will cease production later this year. - The Transit Custom one-tonne van and Tourneo Custom multi-purpose vehicles will go on sale in 2023, followed in 2024 by a smaller, new Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier multi-purpose vehicle in 2024. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/ford-launch-seven-new-electric-vehicles-europe-2024 FORD COMMERCIAL VEHICLE BATTERY PLANT TO BE BUILT IN TURKEY - A newly announced Ford commercial vehicle battery plant figures to play a big role in those plans, too.  This new Ford commercial vehicle battery plant will operate under a newly formed joint-venture between Ford, SK On Co., Ltd., and Koc - the three companies plan to create one of the largest EV battery facilities in the European wider region. - The new joint venture is planned for Ankara and will manufacture high Nickel NMC cells for assembly into battery array modules. Production is currently expected to start as early as mid-decade with an annual capacity likely to be in the range of 30 to 45 Gigawatt hours. This new battery joint venture will receive support directly from the Turkish Government and will directly benefit large and small commercial vehicle operators across Europe, reducing energy and running costs and providing a significant contribution to CO2 reduction, according to Ford. Original Source : https://fordauthority.com/2022/03/ford-commercial-vehicle-battery-plant-to-be-built-in-turkey/ NEW ALL-ELECTRIC ABARTH 500 COMING SOON - Abarth is set to launch its first all-electric car, a rapid hot hatch based on Fiat's electric 500. Promising to deliver more power, sharper handling and more extroverted looks, it will also mark the first step in the brand's transition to an all-electric range of cars when it hits showrooms, possibly as soon as next year. - Speaking to Auto Express, Fiat CEO Olivier François said, ‘The looks are the same. We need to be a little bit more extrovert. Abarth is always a little bit over the top, with spoilers and wheels.' - In the standard car the mid-level and range topping versions get a 42kWh battery producing 116bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 9 seconds and a 93mph top speed. Abarth's electric 500 will need a significant boost in power to match another upcoming retro hot hatch - the 215bhp Renault 5-based Alpine R5. Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/abarth/500/357558/new-all-electric-abarth-500-due-soon?amp NEXT ALFA ROMEO SPIDER GOES ELECTRIC - Alfa Romeo is planning to crown a revitalised range with a new Spider sports car - ending a decade-long interregnum with no mainstream roadster in the range. - The Stellantis group has ‘locked and funded' a new model programme, in a bid to transform Alfa Romeo from everyone's theoretical dream car into a fast-growing stable of irresistible premium products. - Likely be spun off the STLA (pronounced Stella) Medium platform, due to come on stream in 2023. That offers up to 104kWh of battery capacity, and electric motors punching out up to 241bhp. But how many e-motors would the Spider deploy, and where would they be mounted? - ‘The question of rear-drive or all-wheel drive is on the table at the moment,' Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato tells CAR in an exclusive interview. ‘Why not rear-wheel drive – if I have the performance! Obviously I love rear-wheel drive, but if I lose Alfa power or torque because I'm only rear-wheel drive then I prefer to be all-wheel drive.' - But head of design Mesonero-Romanos will insist on strong proportions, including a long bonnet emulating history's great combustion-engined GTs. - Even the industry has axed many convertibles and coupes as sales have plummeted, it won't be easy. ‘Today, there's not a single electric cabrio: it is hard,' admits the head of design. ‘But we need to make people fall in love with cars again.'  And the Spaniard believes that as electrification eliminates tail-pipe emissions, public opinion might again favour cars that some currently consider unforgivably indulgent. Original Source : https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/alfa-romeo/spider/ A COMPANY AIMS TO SNUFF OUT RANGE ANXIETY BY OFFERING 100 MILES IN 5 MINUTES - With its “100inX” technology roadmap, the company aims to achieve a mileage of 100 miles per five minutes of charging by 2024 - The company is at the advanced stages of developing groundbreaking semi-solid state technologies and targets mass manufacturing of its fast-charging battery cells, 100in5, which offer 100 miles of travel in five minutes of charging in 2024, then improve its charging abilities by 40 percent to three minutes by 2028 with 100in3, and finally achieving complete charging in two minutes by improving an additional 33 percent by 2032 with 100in2 batteries. - ‘100in5' cells of StoreDot's XFC technology are already being tested in the real world by a number of original automotive equipment manufacturers. - proven battery chemistry can now be applied to any cell format, including both pouch and the 4680 family form factors, which are the formats increasingly favored by the majority of global car manufacturers. - XFC is a silicon-dominated anode that can accept lithium-ions much faster than a graphite anode can, thanks to silicon's lower resistance, but it also controls the tendency of silicon to swell when it accepts those ions that would otherwise generate damaging mechanical forces inside the battery. - The company became the first one to reveal fast-charging 4680 cylindrical cells that can be fully charged in 10 minutes last year, and produce silicon-dominant extreme fast charge (XFC) cells for electric vehicles on a mass production line. Original Source : https://interestingengineering.com/storedot-100-miles-in-5-minutes WSJ: APPLE PARTNER FOXCONN WANTS TO BUILD CHIPS AND CAR PARTS IN SAUDI ARABIA - Foxconn is reportedly in talks about opening a new $9 billion multipurpose facility in Saudi Arabia. The new factory would be able to make "microchips, electric-vehicle components, and other electronics." - The company is also sounding out the United Arab Emirates about the same project, potentially as a way to put pressure on Saudi Arabia as it works to get tax breaks and more. - Foxconn's links to Apple will no doubt make it an interested party here, especially given the fact that the plant will be able to produce parts for electric vehicles. The Apple Car project is one that continues to trundle along — could this Saudi Arabian project be part of that one day? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Two housekeeping 1) Feed is fixed 2) 4 million should be tomorrow   GEELY IS SPENDING $4.6 BILLION ON A BATTERY PLANT "Geely will pour nearly $5 billion into building an electric battery plant in China, as the country's top privately-owned carmaker moves more aggressively to bolster its electric vehicle ambitions in the world's largest market." says CNN.com: "The company will invest 30 billion yuan ($4.6 billion) into a battery factory in Ganzhou, a city in eastern China, according to a statement released Sunday by the local government. The factory will have a capacity of 42 gigawatt-hours per year, the statement said. That's similar in scale to the factories Germany's Volkswagen (VLKAF) said Monday it would build in Europe. Geely confirmed in a statement on its WeChat account that it signed the agreement over the weekend. It added that it had already been working with Farasis Energy, a local battery company."   https://edition.cnn.com/2021/03/16/business/geely-battery-factory-intl-hnk/index.html   BILL WOULD LET TESLA SELL DIRECTLY TO CONSUMERS IN TEXAS "Automobile manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Honda and others are prohibited from selling directly to consumers in Texas, but Tesla soon might get a green light to do so. A proposed state law would carve out special treatment for certain makers of electric vehicles, allowing them to skirt strict Texas regulations requiring all auto sales to be funneled through third-party franchised dealerships." says Statesman.com: "Tesla — which is building a $1 billion-plus factory in southeastern Travis County that's expected to open late this year — is the biggest-name potential beneficiary of the special treatment, although it also would be a boon to growing numbers of lesser-known electric-vehicle makers that are following similar business models. [Tesla] foregoes third-party franchised dealerships and instead sells directly to consumers over the internet, a sales strategy that doesn't comply with the Texas regulations. It has fought for years to get the rules changed, but without success so far. In the past, however, Tesla hasn't been in the midst of building a major manufacturing facility here that's expected to employ 5,000 people and spark significant amounts of follow-on investment."   FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM ALL-ELECTRIC COMING IN 2023 Ford today confirmed that the next generation Ford Transit Custom range will include an all-electric model in addition to plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid and conventional engine variants.   The new Custom range – which includes the Transit Custom van and Tourneo Custom people mover – goes into production in the first half of 2023, with all-electric versions of both models part of the most extensive Transit Custom range ever offered to European customers. Ford said in February that its entire commercial vehicle range will be zero-emissions capable, all-electric or plug-in hybrid, by 2024, with two-thirds of Ford’s commercial vehicle sales expected to be all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2030.   TRITIUM LAUNCHES SOFTWARE UPDATE TO UNLOCK PLUG & CHARGE Coming off a year that proved to be pivotal for the electric mobility industry, Tritium has launched a new software update for their RT50 DC fast chargers, enabling Plug and Charge technology globally. The update allows an electric vehicle (EV) that supports Plug and Charge and Tritium’s RT50 chargers to communicate seamlessly and authorize payments directly from the driver’s account without needing a card or RFID tag.   Plug and Charge technology promises to reshape the customer experience for the driver and enable the once-siloed approach to charging payments to be broken down, giving the most convenient experience for the EV driver.   https://tritiumcharging.com/tritium-launches-software-update-for-rt50-chargers-to-unlock-plug-and-charge-capabilities/   PORSCHE BETS ON SILICON AND PREMIUM HIGH POWER CHARGING AREAS FOR EVS "If Volkswagen wants to focus on scale and cost with its unified cell, that’s not the main concern Porsche has. The premium German carmaker will benefit from Volkswagen’s platform for cells, but its customers are more worried about high performance. This is why the company is betting on silicon of the anodes and also planning to build high power charging areas for its EVs." accordnig to InsideEVs: "Oliver Blume talked about these plans at the Volkswagen Power Day. Silicon provides big advantages over graphite, such as the capacity to store ten times more lithium-ions, much lower lithium plating tendency, and the possibility to use thinner layers of the material, which reduces weight at the same time it lowers internal resistance. These state-of-the-art cells would also have a goal to be 30 percent lighter, present 25 percent less internal resistance, and 40 percent more recuperation performance."   https://insideevs.com/news/494717/porsche-bets-silicon-hpc-areas/     PORSCHE FOLLOWS TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER LEAD WITH ITS OWN PRIVATE CHARGING NETWORK "In a move similar to Tesla’s Supercharger network, Porsche announced that it will build its own proprietary charging network for its customers." says electrek: "Now Porsche is following Tesla’s lead and announcing its own network to complement one of those third-party networks, Ionity, in Europe: Porsche is planning its own fast-charging stations along the most important European major highways and motorways. These will offer customers a high-quality, brand-appropriate charging experience while complementing the Ionity network. A unique design will showcase the special character of the Porsche fast-charging stations to the outside world. The German automaker says that each station will have “between six and 12 charging points with a charging capacity of 350 kW and more.”"   CEO Oliver Blume said: "“An important prerequisite for electromobility is fast and convenient charging,” says Blume. “That is why we are currently working on the details of a concept for our own fast-charging stations. We will select attractive locations for these in order to offer our customers the most comfortable and fastest long-distance travel experience possible.”"   https://electrek.co/2021/03/16/porsche-follows-tesla-supercharger-lead-own-private-charging-network/   TESLA BATTERY-SUPPLIER PANASONIC THINKS IT'S TIME IT STARTED SEEING OTHER PEOPLE "Panasonic has supplied Tesla’s batteries as far back as the carmaker’s plucky startup days, but the two companies’ relationship is changing and Tesla wants to rely less on Panasonic. Now, Panasonic has announced the same." said Jalopnik: "Kazuhiro Tsuga, Panasonic’s upcoming chairman and ex-CEO, told the Financial Times (FT) that his company wants to supply more carmakers with batteries because Panasonic is evolving. Tsuga also acknowledged during the interview that Panasonic’s choice to produce batteries for Tesla has left them at a slight disadvantage because its batteries are not compatible with other EVs"   https://jalopnik.com/tesla-battery-supplier-panasonic-thinks-its-time-it-sta-1846488786   You can listen to all 1023 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #834   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 9th June 2020. OSLO HAS THE MOST EVS PER CAPITA IN THE WORLD "Oslo, Norway's capital, is now reportedly the world leader in terms of electric vehicles per capita (along with the country's second-largest city, Bergen). This comes as no surprise since Norway leads the way in EV adoption, and its capital has set itself a very ambitious target to be near-zero emissions by 2030." says InsideEVs: "Currently, around 18 percent of all passenger cars operating in the city are fully electric, 9 percent are plug-in hybrids and 5 percent are regular hybrids. And this shift isn’t only in the passenger car segment; electric vans have also gone up in popularity too, with 23 percent of all new vans bought in Q1 2020 being fully electric."   https://insideevs.com/news/432911/oslo-most-evs-per-capita-globally   ELON MUSK ABOUT TO GET ANOTHER $1.8 BILLION PAYDAY FROM TESLA "Musk's pay package, approved by Tesla shareholders in 2018, doesn't pay him any salary or cash bonuses. Instead, it laid out a plan that could eventually give him 20.3 million stock options over the course of 10 years, in 12 equal blocks of 1.7 million options, as long as the company hits a series of operational and market value goals." according to CNN: "The company's share price has continued to climb steadily, rising more than 70% since Musk received the previous options grant. That gives the company a current market value of $258.6 billion, and a six-month average of $138.6 billion. That new market value is closer to the next target than it might appear. Tesla shares need only to stay at this level for the next two weeks to hit the six-month average of $150 billion. Musk has yet to exercise his options."   https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/elon-musk-about-to-get-another-2418-billion-payday-from-tesla/ar-BB16Aqz9   MUSK SAYS TESLA IS ‘VERY CLOSE’ TO DEVELOPING FULLY AUTONOMY VEHICLES "Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. is “very close” to developing fully autonomous vehicles and could work out the basics of that technology as soon as this year, he said in a prerecorded video played during the World AI Conference in Shanghai." according to Bloomberg: "Musk reiterated that the electric vehicle maker has solved most of the essential challenges toward achieving Level 5 autonomy, or a fully self-driven automobile that needs no human behind the wheel. The Tesla and SpaceX chief was reaffirming a goal first expressed in 2019."   https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/musk-says-tesla-is-e2-80-98very-close-e2-80-99-to-developing-fully-autonomy-vehicles/ar-BB16w6q4   TESLA IS NOT AHEAD IN LITHIUM-ION BATTERY TECH, SAYS AUDI CEO "Over the years, Tesla has been hard at work improving its batteries, and as the company heads towards its highly anticipated Battery Day event, it is becoming more and more evident that the electric car maker is one of, if not the, leader in lithium ion batteries for electric cars. " says TEslarati: "That is, of course, if one does not ask Audi CEO Markus Duesmann. In a recent talk with German magazine Focus.de, the Audi CEO...stated that he does not see Tesla being ahead in lithium ion battery tech at all. With this, it would not be long before Germany’s automakers catch up. “We’re catching up with seven-mile boots,” Duesmann said. "Interestingly enough, it will only be a matter of time before Tesla manages to capitalize on Germany’s car making mastery. The electric car maker is currently building Gigafactory Berlin, a facility that is expected to start operations next year by producing the Model Y."   https://www.teslarati.com/audi-ceo-tesla-not-ahead-battery-tech/   BMW UNVEIL ITS HOTLY ANTICIPATED IX3 EV NEXT WEEK "The hotly anticipated BMW iX3, the company’s first electric vehicle that’s part of its core product line up, will be officially unveiled next week.   On July 14 at 10AM CEST, the German automaker will take the covers off the EV and it’ll be the first time the public or press has seen it for real, CarScoops reports." according to The Next Web: "The iX3 has so far been reported to have a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 282 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’ll also have a 74 kWh battery pack capable of powering the car for approximately 273 miles (440 km). Early last month, the Bavarian marque announced that it had already started production of the vehicle, which is being made in China. The first customer deliveries are expected later this year."   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/07/10/heres-how-to-watch-bmw-ix3s-unveiling-happening-next-week-july-14/   STOHL TO LEAD HISTORIC DEBUT OF ELECTRIC RALLYCROSS CAR "An electric car will race in rallycross for the first time this weekend, as former world rally driver Manfred Stohl is set to compete in an electric Ford Fiesta at a Hungarian Rallycross Championship event." says motorsport.com: "Stohl will compete at the Kakucs circuit in a Fiesta ElectRX, created by his STARD research and development firm, the kind of car that will be run in the World Rallycross Championship’s Projekt E electric support series from this year. With the Fiesta’s electric kit producing 450kW (the equivalent to 613 horsepower) and 1100Nm, the event will give the first clear indication of an electric car’s performance against conventional two-litre turbo charged, 600bhp rallycross Supercars. While the Projekt E series will be a standalone single-powertrain category within the World RX structure, World RX will adopt electric cars into the top category in 2022, with electric cars pitched against existing ICE machines."   https://www.motorsport.com/rallycross/news/stohl-electric-ford-debut-hungary/4828329/?ic_source=home-page-widget&ic_medium=widget&ic_campaign=widget-6   NISSAN LEAF TRIALS WITH V2G TECHNOLOGY IN AUSTRALIA "Nissan’s vehicle-to-grid technology has arrived in Australia. With a government trial, called Realising Electric Vehicle Services (REVS), Nissan is preparing to launch V2G technology to the Australian market later this year." writes electrive.com: "The REVS project will see 51 Nissan Leaf EVs deployed across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) ahead of the commercial roll-out planned by Nissan. The ACT government will operate 50 Nissan Leaf electric cars in a trial capacity, using their batteries to stabilise energy supply to the power grid."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/09/nissan-leaf-trials-with-v2g-technology-to-start-in-australia/   FORD TRANSIT PHEV SWITCHES TO EV MODE IN CITIES AUTOMATICALLY "Ford has introduced a new automatic electric mode for the Transit Custom plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which uses geofencing to ensure the van operates with zero-emissions in cities. " says CommercialFleet website: "Using live location data, the Transit Custom PHEV vans will automatically switch to electric drive mode whenever they enter predefined areas such as congestion and low‑emission zones. Vehicle operators can also create custom “green zones” to encourage low-emission driving around locations such as schools, playgrounds and warehouses."   https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/van-news/2020/07/08/ford-transit-phev-switches-to-ev-mode-in-cities-automatically   ELECTRIC SCOOTER CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS 2020 CAN ALWAYS GET WILDER "With electric scooters as numerous and troublesome as tribbles, it's amazing no one thought of a professional race series. That chasm in the market has now been filled by the Electric Scooter Championship, also known as the eSC and the eSkootr Championship. " according to Autoblog: "The inaugural eSC season is planned for 2021 "in the hearts of major cities" around the world, with a two-pronged raison d'être that wants to "make international motorsport more accessible, affordable and sustainable than ever before," and that wants to help cities by "[promoting] the cost, convenience and sustainability benefits of micromobility within the rapidly changing electric mobility landscape. With this series, we have created a superfast race machine capable of speeds greater than 100km/h, that can accelerate faster than a road car, and which will reach 100km/h in only a few seconds."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/09/electric-scooter-racing-esc-eskootr-championship/   [mention for Premium Partners]   You can listen to all 833 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRIGHTSMITHGROUP.COM – FOR CLEANTECH TALENT (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NEW! Show #751   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   PLUG-IN HYBRID TECHNOLOGY IN MORE THAN 20 MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS "There will be more than 20 Mercedes-Benz models with EQ Power by the end of 2020, the company pledges, starting with the A-Class all the way to the S-Class luxury saloon, SUVs included." reports MercedesBlog: "Furthermore, the relatively large lithium-ion batteries provide purely electric driving enough for most daily journeys. EQ Power system integrates the 1.33-liter 4-cylinder engine of 218 horsepower, developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. A lithium-ion battery supplied by Daimler’s subisidary Deutsche Accumotive, featuring a capacity of approximately 15.6 kWh."   There's also a larger battery variant of 31.2kWh compatible with the COMBO vehicle socket using AC and DC. They only give the recharging time of 20 minutes to get from 10% to 80%. So that's 21.8kWh, assuming that first figure is usable. To get that energy into the battery in 20 mins, divide by 20 mins and multiply by 60 mins, looks like 65kW charge speed. Very rough maths!   https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/EQ-Power--plug-in-hybrid-technology-taken-one-step-further-Sustainable-efficient-dynamic-Plug-in-hybrids-as-a-technology-that-pays-off.xhtml?oid=46161870   NISSAN LEAF CROWNED BRITAIN’S MOST ICONIC ELECTRIC CAR "A DrivingElectric survey of more than 700 people has revealed the Nissan Leaf as the most recognisable electric vehicle on sale. Now in its second generation and celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, the Leaf is also the world’s best-selling electric car to date." according to Driving Electric: "Of the survey respondents, 94% recognised the Leaf, with the Tesla Model S finishing a close second. The Jaguar I-Pace climbed the ladder to third place in this year’s round-up, pushing Tesla’s Model X into fourth – one place lower than before. The BMW i3 completed the top five, with the MINI Electric – new for this year’s table – in sixth. As well as revealing the most recognisable electric cars, the survey asked respondents which manufacturers they thought were leading the charge with electric vehicle adoption. Tesla topped both of these categories, with Nissan and Jaguar completing the podium."   https://www.drivingelectric.com/electric-car-survey   HONDA HYBRID AND EV BATTERIES TO BE USED IN NEW RECYCLING INITIATIVE "Honda Motor Europe is expanding its battery recycling partnership with SNAM (Société Nouvelle d’Affinage des Métaux) to advance the sustainable usability of its end-of-life traction batteries." says Renewable Energy Magazine: "The pan-European arrangement will see SNAM collect and recycle batteries from Honda's increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles and either potentially prepare them for 'second-life' renewable energy storage uses or extract valuable materials for recycling if they are not suitable for that purpose. Dealers can arrange and request the collection of end-of-life batteries for treatment and recycling through SNAM's dedicated online platform. Collection can be arranged from centralised storage hubs within 15 working days, so that dealers do not have to store batteries at their premises."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/honda-hybrid-and-ev-batteries-to-be-20200416   LONDON CAB MAKER LEVC READIES PLUG-IN VAN "London black-cab maker LEVC aims to start production of its plug-in hybrid light commercial van in November ahead of sales next year, the Geely-owned company has said." writes Automotive News Europe: "The van, called VN5, uses the same platform and drivetrain as the TX5 taxi and will rival Ford's plug-in hybrid Transit Custom, which has already gone on sale LEVC is banking on cities getting tougher on air quality and forcing delivery companies out of traditional diesel vans. The van will use 65 percent of the same parts as the taxi, LEVC said, and will be built on the same production line in Coventry.  The high cost of the drivetrain with its 31 kWh battery and 1.5-liter Volvo-sourced three-cylinder range-extender engine is expected to make the van significantly more expensive than conventional rivals in the one-ton, midsize van segment."   https://europe.autonews.com/latest-launches/london-cab-maker-levc-readies-plug-van   TATA NEXON EV NOW INDIA’S HIGHEST SELLING ELECTRIC CAR "The next most accessible electric car in India happens to be the Tata Nexon EV. Tata launched the Nexon EV earlier this year and the response so far has been good. In a somber March, Tata managed to sell 198 Nexon EVs. In comparison, MG Motors managed to sell 116 units of the much more expensive and bigger ZS EV." reports Financial Express.   Motor (Type) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor   Battery pack 30.2 kWh High energy density Lithium ion battery pack   Thermal management system Liquid cooled   Acceleration (0-100 kmph in sec) 9.9*   POLAND TO BRING BACK LG CHEM TECHNICIANS ON SPECIAL FLIGHT "South Korean battery maker LG Chem said Thursday that the Polish government would open its airways to allow LG Chem employees to resume the expansion of the company’s electric vehicle battery plant in Poland. It is an exception to the country’s strict measures to contain the coronavirus outbreak." according to the Korea Herald: "According to LG Chem, the company will dispatch some 200 employees on a special LOT Polish Airlines flight Friday to the construction site in Wroclaw, Poland, to restart the work to expand the plant. LG Chem is currently planning to double its EV battery production capacity this year in Europe to 60 GWh, which is enough to power 1 million EVs. To facilitate the immediate deployment of essential personnel, the Polish government is expected to waive its two-week quarantine requirement for LG Chem employees who have tested negative for COVID-19 in Korea. The Polish government has closed the country’s borders until May 3, but made this exception because disruptions in EV battery production could hurt European automakers including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Renault."   http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200416000739   LEXUS NX TRADEMARK MIGHT HINT AT PLUG-IN HYBRID MODEL TO COME "A Mach E Club forum user posted trademarks Lexus filed in Europe surrounding the NX, but one of them is very interesting: an NX 450h Plus. For those who don't speak Lexus nomenclature, the "h" stands for "hybrid" but the "Plus" is something new." says CNET: "It could be that the plus designation means there's more going on with the hybrid system, perhaps a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It's the best theory for now since we only have previous Lexus names to go on. The brand declined to comment on future product. Should the NX 450h Plus come to life as a plug-in hybrid, there's a possibility it could share the Toyota RAV4 Prime's powertrain. The plug-in hybrid RAV4 makes 302 horsepower, boasts 90 miles per gallon equivalent and should go 39 miles on a full charge."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/lexus-nx-toyota-rav4-plug-in-hybrid-platform-range/   THE SOUNDTRACK TO AN ELECTRIC CAR "when a driver starts up his or her electric-powered BMW i4 sedan later this year or next, Hans Zimmer will be riding shotgun, so to speak, creating a sonic signature for the car, because electric motors make little sound." reports The New York Times: "In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adopted rules in 2018 that say electric cars must make some artificial sounds. Congress made it a requirement that light-duty hybrids and electrics emit noise as a safety measure for pedestrians, bicyclists and people with a visual impairment. The European Parliament has mandated that electrics sold in Europe will have to “sound similar” to cars with combustion engines at speeds below 20 kilometers an hour. The rule is to take full effect in 2021. He explained that, in his view, the “BMW IconicSounds Electric” commission was more about deleting than adding. “Too much information would automatically be distracting,” he said. “If you look at the great pieces of art, it’s usually the simplicity that makes them great.”"   https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/16/business/bmw-i4-hans-zimmer.html   VIRUS COULD CAUSE MORE CAR TRAVEL "Earlier this year, daily highway vehicle traffic volumes in China were lower than they had been a year earlier thanks to reduced activity during lockdown. By early March, however, China’s daily traffic was consistently above that of a year before. Car-buying in Wuhan, the original epicenter of Covid-19 and the first city to be sealed off to prevent its spread, has also rebounded. As an Audi AG sales representative said, “It’s like a boom after a two-month dormancy. I thought sales would be frozen.”" according to Bloomberg: "Covid-19 has brought about changes that urban planners once only dreamed about. The city of Oakland, California has designated 74 miles of neighborhood streets for “bikes, pedestrians, wheelchair users, and local vehicles only.” New Zealand’s transport minister has announced the country will provide funding for 90% of the cost of pop-up cycleways and footpaths.  This is our present moment in transport. But it won’t last forever. When we exit our however-long-it-will-be of weekdays that feel like Sundays, people will start moving again. China’s example suggests that personal car traffic will more than rebound–and that public transit will not."   https://business.financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/transport-after-the-virus-will-be-more-cars-fewer-trains     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 237 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
