Career / Process You broke in around 2006, and you're now pushing close to two decades in comics. How has your approach to storytelling changed from those early years to now? You've been at this for nearly 20 years at this point. What's something you understand about comics today that you wish you knew when you started? You're writing across multiple major franchises right now. How do you shift your voice between something like Superman, Iron Man, and G.I. Joe? On top of all this, you wrote a story in Creepshow Vol. 4 #5 titled Artificial Ignorance. Was that a story you had in a drawer, or…how did that come to be? Superman / Superboy-Prime Superboy-Prime has always been a volatile character, but here he feels almost desperate to prove himself. How do you balance his edge with making him someone readers want to follow? With Manchester Black entering the picture, what excites you about putting those two characters in conflict specifically? Any Superman elements/tropes you want to touch? Iron Man You've said Tony Stark is one of your favorite characters. What's something about Tony that you feel hasn't been explored enough in past runs? Madame Masque and A.I.M. feel like they're operating at a higher level here. What makes them the right villains for this phase of the story? Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man Do you have a favorite Universal Monsters adaptation? Do you have any favorite werewolf stories? This feels like a very grounded, almost psychological take on the Wolf Man. What drew you to that angle? Is the when of this story important to the overall experience? What makes the Wolf Man a character worth revisiting right now? Rapid Fire Question Round (Stolen from Stephen Colbert so that a guest is “known”): Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've written before, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? Depeche Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

When mom and dad go to war, it's the children who suffer the most. Family tension bleeds into every aspect of their lives, and frequently, they have nowhere to hide or even space to process the external and internal strife. As a kid, we fled to stories. Whether it was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial or Mrs. Doubtfire, fiction helped us process the big emotions we witnessed flowing from our parents. This week on the podcast, we're talking with collaborators Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin about their new all-ages graphic novel, Penny and the Yeti. It's a comic designed to help kids navigate the world when the adult voices in their home get too darn loud. Currently, divorce rates in America fall between 40 and 50 percent. Whether a kid is personally affected by this rate or not, they'll certainly encounter divorce among friends. They will rely on stories like Penny and the Yeti to clarify this reality. And creating such stories bears an incredible responsibility. With Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin, we discuss Penny and the Yeti's origins, its ties to Gaspero's own daughter, and the joys of visualizing cryptids. Why a Yeti? If you know Jimmy and his work as a podcaster and journalist, you know the answer already. And we get into that specific aspect of his life as well. Penny and the Yeti is out now from Papercutz. It's written by Jimmy Gaspero, illustrated by Amber Akin, color flatted by Charlie Akin, and lettered by Buddy Beaudoin. You can continue this conversation by following Jimmy Gaspero on Instagram and BlueSky and Amber Akin on Instagram and BlueSky. We're sure you can relate to this sensation. You finish reading a comic, and as you close the back cover, you look over your shoulder. Has the creator responsible for this book been living in your home? Have they been watching you when you weren't looking? Cuz this comic seems made specifically for you. That's certainly how we feel about Kevin Alvir and his latest graphic novel, Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar: The Rock God Complex, out now from Top Shelf Productions. This second book in his Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar series sees Alvir upping his game. He's perfectly smashed the indie comics world with the superhero fantasy. As we state on the back of the book, in the pull-quote we're most proud of, “What if Jack Kirby tabled at @SPXComics? You'd get Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar!” If you understand that statement, you're already in. You should put this book in your hands immediately. Kevin Alvir masterfully blends the mundane with the extraordinary. His characters are struggling, but they're fighting the good fight, and they will overcome their internal and external battles. In this week's podcast, we discuss with the cartoonist how he leveled up for his sequel, the power of unhinged, righteous anger, and how reading and creating comics help you sort your stuff out. Every character in Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar: The Rock God Complex is searching for something: from guitar strings to vampire teeth to self-respect. What they eventually find carves a path for the reader to follow. It's a beautiful, affirming, human story with cybernetic unicorns, ghost guitarists, demons, and naysayers. With social media splintering and websites chasing clicks, navigating the comic book industry has never been more challenging. Tiffany Babb and The Comics Staple are here to help, hopefully. If you have any interest in comics criticism, you're probably already aware of who Babb is and what fight she's fighting. Her latest project is a monthly black-and-white zine designed to be a tool for readers entering their local comic shop. Her roster of tastemakers will guide you through what's hot, what's not, and break beyond the publicity machine. You have less than a week to back The Comics Staple on Kickstarter. It's already reached well beyond its goal. This beauty is happening, and we can't wait to get our hands on the first issue in September. As we're attempting to balance our lives between the online space and “the meat space,” endeavors like The Comics Staple seem poised to help. It's always a pleasure to have Tiffany Babb on the podcast. This week, we discuss why she added The Comics Staple to her workload, how she assembled her creative team, why the physical media movement is gaining steam with younger generations, and who will benefit from a twelve-page comic book guide. Find The Comics Courier Kickstarter here. Continue the conversation with Tiffany Babb by following her on BlueSky, Instagram, and her Website. Before Christian Ward joins us for a full-spoilers conversation about Event Horizon: Inferno, we get lost in a lengthy discussion about Stephen King's The Stand. We promise, however, that both stories tie nicely together and circle the vast concerns many of us are feeling in 2026. Event Horizon #1 is now available in comic book shops everywhere, thanks to IDW Publishing, and this week's podcast is a full-spoilers conversation all about it, digging deep into modern anxieties while also celebrating kick-ass monsters and scary horror movie violence. As the solicits say for this surprise comic book sequel, Event Horizon: Inferno is indeed Aliens meets Dante's Inferno. Get ready now. Set 200 years after the film and its comic book prequel, Event Horizon: Dark Descent, Event Horizon: Inferno introduces a new crew of desperate humans and demonic antagonists. Christian Ward and artist Rob Carey (plus, colorist Xenon Honchar and letterer Alex Ray) profoundly expand the Event Horizon universe, taking it to realms barely hinted at in the original nineties scare fest. As Ward mentions, he's giving Event Horizon the same treatment that Dark Horse Comics gave the Aliens and Predator franchises back in the nineties. If you remember those comics, damn, you're probably pretty darn excited at the notion. This week, we get ponderous about hell, heaven, and their servants. We dig into how this series demands expansion and the freedom in which the publisher and studio gave Ward and his collaborators. We consider how Event Horizon: Inferno reflects the world outside our window and what we can do to alleviate real-life dread. Buckle up, friends. We're all on this ship together. Again, Event Horizon #1 is out now from IDW Publishing. It's written by Christian Ward, illustrated by Rob Carey, colored by Xenon Honchar, and lettered by Alex Ray. Variant Cover (see art above) by Eamon Winkle. Continue this conversation with Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Blue Sky and Instagram. It's a topic we discuss a lot. When you love comics, you eventually want to make them. Curt Pires heard Franklin Jonas professing his love for the medium on a podcast. Immediately, he recognized a kindred spirit. Pires invited Jonas to play. The result is the new Image Comics series Fireborn, spinning out of Pires' massive comic book playground, Lost Fantasy. Maybe you've already read the logline: Fireborn is Invincible meets How to Train Your Dragon meets Absolute Batman. Whoa, okay. That's a lot, but what does that actually mean? On this week's podcast, we get into it with Franklin Jonas and Curt Pires. We break down those other stories and consider what they owe to Spider-Man and his Amazing Fantasy #15 debut. Where do you begin when creating an F'd up Peter Parker? And did we mention the hot takes? Franklin Jonas has them! We give the musician the space to profess his passion for comics, champion his all-time favorite Daredevil run, and explain why not enough of you are reading the current JSA monthly written by Jeff Lemire. In Fireborn, Aaron Hillburg is a rich kid who runs face-first into Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. He answers the call to action, but when will he reject it? With great power there must also come great responsibility. One issue in, we got part one of that statement. Is part two coming? Let's geek out about what comics can do that no TV pitch can ever contain. Fireborn #1 is out now from Image Comics. It's written by Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, illustrated by Patrick Mulholland, colored by Mark Dale, and lettered by Micah Myers. Comics don't just happen. Artists will them from nothing. As you'll hear from Henry Barajas and Rachel Merrill in this week's podcast, comics arrive at your local comic book shop through tremendous persistence and imagination. The next time you cross your shop's threshold, possibly to grab a copy of Barajas and Merrill's Death to Pachuco, out now in trade paperback from Image Comics, take a moment to thank the makers. Each book on the rack is a tiny miracle. In Death to Pachuco, Barajas and Merrill tap into history, detailing the 1943 Sleepy Lagoon Murder Trial and the Zoot Suit Riots. It's a Chicano noir, heavily inspired by classic Hollywood tales, but springing from a perspective frequently silenced or ignored. Their private eye, Ricardo “Ricky” Tellez, fancies himself a Sherlock Holmes type, complete with a nearly debilitating drug addiction. He's caught in the racial tensions boiling over during wartime Los Angeles, hunting for a killer, while navigating a femme fatale. This week on the podcast, we chat with Barajas and Merrill about balancing fact and fiction, style and reality, and why humanity frequently allows fear steer its actions. We discuss the magnificent amount of will and persistence it took to materialize Death to Pachuco and how it feels to see it collected in trade paperback, finally. Death to Pachuco is written and lettered by Henry Barajas, illustrated by Rachel Merrill, and colored by Lee Loughridge. The book featured several variant covers from folks like Sarah Gordon (see episode art), Tula Lotay, Ben Passmore, David Lapham, and others. Make sure you're following Henry Barajas on BlueSky and Instagram, and Rachel Merrill on BlueSky and Instagram. Fantastic Forum is back with another week of conversation, critique, and comics! This episode we're diving into two very different corners of IDW Publishing with the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones mini-series and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring. First up, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones spins the fan-favorite vigilante out of the pages of the main TMNT series and into his own spotlight. Written by Alex Paknadel with art by Amancay Nahuelpan and colors by Luis Antonio Delgado, the series finds Casey waking from near death with a renewed mission to protect New York City. Unfortunately for him, the city isn't getting any safer. A new strain of mutagen and a dangerous new enemy threaten the vulnerable mutants of the streets, pushing Casey to his limits while his closest allies, including April O'Neil and Raphael, worry he's pushing himself too far. Then we turn to one of IDW's most talked-about horror titles with Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring. Created by Patrick Horvath, who serves as writer and artist with lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, this sequel returns readers to the deceptively peaceful town of Woodbrook. Beneath the storybook charm lies something far darker as Samantha Strong, the small-town hardware store owner who also happens to be a serial killer, finds her carefully maintained double life under threat when a visitor arrives searching for answers about a long-missing brother. Cute aesthetics collide with brutal horror in a way only this series can deliver. We've read the issues and now it's time to break down what worked, what surprised us, and what these stories say about the range of ideas coming out of IDW right now. Watch tonight at 6:30 pm PT and call in live at www.fantasticforum.live to share your thoughts. Fantastic Forum, assemble! Here's your first warning: Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring spoilers ahead! Patrick Horvath returns for a full spoilers breakdown of the sequel series to IDW Publishing's smash hit. Together, we consider the cartoonist's joyous relationship with beauty and horror, where Monica the Duck finds herself in the last panels of the final issue, and why we were so wrong about George the last time we spoke with Horvath. Or, were we? Sequels are a terrible, stressful thing to attempt, but we all know why they happen. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees was too damn successful to be left alone, and thankfully, Horvath, the book's shepherd, returned to his drawing table with passion and a mission for his characters. Rite of Spring is not only better than the original series, but it must also be considered as one of the best comic book sequels of all time. And it's because it might leave certain readers fur-ious (sorry, not sorry) regarding where Horvath leaves (or drags) certain characters. Patrick Horvath is not afraid to hurt his comic book kids. However, as we discuss, there is as much love and beauty in his series as there is grotesque horror. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring is a deeply human book, and as such, it stirs profound feelings within the reader. Also, yo, another sequel is coming. What can we expect? We put that question to Horvath, too. All six issues of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring are out now from IDW Publishing. Continue this conversation with Patrick Horvath by following him on Bluesky, Instagram, and his Website. Friends, let's celebrate. We've made it through another year, and no matter how you felt about the world outside your local comic book shop, you certainly read some great comics. Welcome to our annual award show, The Stampies: Best Comics of 2025. Part One. Every year is a good year for comics. You just have to go out and read them. That's the secret. We try not to imprison ourselves with characters, genres, publishers, or even our preferred tastes. As long as you're only interested in good comics, you'll find them if you read enough, and the brilliant thing about 2025 is that we read a lot, and found so many great comics, but we still didn't read enough to read all the great comics. Thankfully, we sent out the Comic Book Couples Counseling distress call, and a bunch of our friends from across the industry answered. Peppered throughout our Stampies ceremony are our podcaster, journalist, publicist, and creator friends, each offering their favorite comics from 2025. See a list of them below, and make sure you support their work and follow them on socials. As we do every year, we select our favorite comics and then create the Stampies around them. This two-part episode reflects our weird, collective tastes as a couple. Listeners will recognize several of the titles, but hopefully, we've thrown in several surprises, too. You can also find the award categories and (SPOILERS) winners below, listed alongside their timestamps in case you want to hop around or revisit later. For the first time ever, we've created physical Stampy Awards to be delivered to the creators. We're only able to do this thanks to our new sponsor, Global Comix. The all-in-one digital comics platform is currently offfering a great comics bundle when you sign up for their Global Comix Gold program. Make sure you give them a click (more details below), then start browsing their incredible digital comics library. The Best Comics of 2025 Part One Guest-Stars: Lance (Bluesky) and Jeremy (Bluesky) of Comic Book Keepers. This Winter, from IDW Publishing, the Heroes in a Half-Shell take on the King of the Monsters! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #1 crashes into comic shops on November 12th. Written by Godzilla Kei-Sei Scribe Tim Seeley and illustrated by the brilliant Turtle artist behind the Nightwatcher series, as well as the Stranger Things/TMNT crossover, Fero Pe, this new series finally brings two of our favorite franchises together. How can this reptilian miracle be? Long before the organization was corrupted by Shredder, the Foot Clan's original purpose was to save Japan from Kaiju! Now, in the present day, Godzilla and its fellow monsters have reappeared. Not only is the Foot not prepared to stop them…it would seem Shredder himself is behind the attacks! The Turtles are always crossing over into rad nerd realms, but this one might be the king crossover of them all. Are you ready to face the future? This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong's cardinal rule. After all, there's a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you've worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie…the last thing you want is to disturb the peace. So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook's own meets a grisly, mysterious demise—and you wouldn't blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree. In this episode of Waiting on the Trade, we discuss Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, a cozy-but-grisly anthropomorphic thriller from writer/artist Patrick Horvath and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
On today's new episode the guys talk Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is an original graphic novel written and drawn by Patrick Horvath and published by IDW about Samantha Strong, a serial killer who is also a beloved member of her small, anthropomorphic animal town. When a rival killer begins murdering locals, Samantha must hunt them down to protect her secret and prevent the town from self-destructing. The story is known for its dark, violent plot juxtaposed with a cute, Richard Scarry-style art style. But first did Cody make sure the military wasn't at New York Comic Con? Was this one of the best books of 2024? Does this comic have Dexter vibes? What do we call watching movies with William Hurt? Does this book take place in the 80s? Is Cody aging like fine wine? How does Samantha Strong feel about her community? Did we guess the killer? What's going on in the next volume of this series? How cold is Samantha? Is Good Luck Chuck the Casablanca of our generation? What is scary and creepy about the first murder that draws you in? What does Anthony tell us about DC KO? What other crossovers are happening in comics recently? Who would win between Samantha Strong and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat? Who would we be in this comic? Did Satan tempt Eve to smoke from an apple? It's been a little while since we did a non-superhero indie comic, so we're reading about some cute animals living in a cute animal town where everyone knows everyone and they're all happy... until the murders start happening. It's Patrick Horvath's Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and it's simultaneously adorable and gruesome. We're taking a look at the first volume to see how apt the Dexter comparisons are. Then, we're starting a new long read with The Ultimates #1, in which our alternative universe Avengers team... is mostly absent. Next Time: Silver Surfer (2014) #1-5 by Dan Slott & Mike Allred!

I have been looking forward to getting Patrick Horvath on the show for some time now and no better way to do it than to chat about his new IDW Dark project that builds on his break out success Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees. It's back with the next installment called Rite Of Spring which is a significant departure from the original but fear not, or maybe you should, our beloved murder bear Samantha is back. I think Patrick and I are long lost relatives because it's rare that I get to make a connection with someone on the relative merits of using Diet Coke to remove flesh from bone. We get into that, how he's avoiding the sophmore comics slump, how a decade's passing effects the people of the world, Sam's new nemesis Monica, and much more. This was one of the funnest and funniest, if dark, episodes I've recorded in some time. Patrick's website Patrick's newsletter Byron's shout out: Bakelite by Julie Gautier Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite Of Spring from IDW Dark From the publisher The six-issue return of the Eisner-nominated cozy horror smash hit! It's been eight long years since a bloodlusting brown bear drove into the city, kidnapped a kind young duck, dissected his body, and buried the pieces in the woods. The duck's family painstakingly sought justice... but this brown bear was smart... she covered her tracks... and in the '80s, there simply wasn't a way for the duck's family to find answers. But it's not the '80s anymore. Almost a decade after cuddly brown bear Samantha Strong solidified herself as the sole serial killer in Woodbrook, the world is entering a new era. As Samantha will soon find out, there are no secrets in the age of the internet. And those who lost loved ones to her massacre haven't given up the flame of justice. A reckoning is coming to Woodbrook. Join visionary writer and artist Patrick Horvath for one of the most anticipated comics of 2025. Free For All from Oni Press From the publisher From Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Patrick Horvath (Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees) comes a 56-page, self-contained one-shot that delivers a brutal new vision of capitalism by combat . . . In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good-or defend them in ritual combat. Reigning champion and real estate magnate Ted Brooks has 22 victories under his belt-defending the wealth he schemed and stabbed to get-when he is forced to face his ex-wife, Luella Dominguez, in a fight to the death. Luella has been training, waiting for this moment. But will she have what it takes to defeat the man who would do anything-absolutely anything-to keep his fortune? It's every shareholder for themselves when death and bankruptcy collide in Free for All #1, a giant-sized, one-shot spectacle of commerce and carnage coming this March from Eisner Award-nominated cartoonist Patrick Horvath! It's always a sunny day when Patrick Horvath wanders into our Love Nest. Two years after his first appearance on the podcast, he's back with another first issue, and this time, it's the sequel to the comic that made him a sensation. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring takes us back to Woodbrook, years after the events of the original series, where Sam the Bear nearly lost control and many furry citizens lost their lives. Sequels are scary. We crave them desperately, but too often, they leave us full of regret and not satisfaction. With our hands on our bellies, we grumble, frustrated at how we fooled ourselves into a second taste, knowing it could never be as delicious as the first. Patrick Horvath wickedly understands sour sequelitis and subverts its toxicity through revelation. Danny the Duck, the first victim we saw Sam take in Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, haunts every panel of Rite of Spring #1. His sister, Monica, takes center stage, as does her tremendous grief, which threatens to annihilate the person she was and the person she could have been. We didn't know it at the time, but Danny's death would slowly drill Monica toward Sam, and we both fear and delight at their eventual confrontation. In this episode, we ask Patrick Horvath why he couldn't stay away from Woodbrook. We discuss the function of the time jump between the first series and its new sequel, Monica's prominence in Rite of Spring #1, Danny the Duck's vengeance, and the beauty of childhood cliches. Final Order Cutoff (FOC) for Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring #1 is Monday, June 2nd. The first issue will arrive in shops from IDW Publishing on July 9th. In this episode of Horror Joy, hosts Brian and Jeff revisit the iconic nineties teen slasher films Scream (1996) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). They explore how Scream redefined the slasher genre with its meta-horror elements and adherence to and subversion of classic horror rules. They contrast this with I Know What You Did Last Summer's more traditional approach, discussing its themes of future anxiety, class conflict, and the psychological impact of social expectations. They reflect on the nostalgia of the VHS era and the communal aspect of watching horror films.By the episode's end, Brian and Jeff conclude that Scream holds up as a genre-defining classic but I Know What You Did Last Summer is not an especially good or scary movie. So, what is your favorite scary movie? Grab your cordless phone and rekindle the hope of the approaching new millennium. But don't hold on too tight, because we all know how quickly that could be dashed by a ubiquitous masked killer. And if we get lost along the way, don't worry. We'll be right back. Don't. Murder. The locals. This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong's cardinal rule. After all, there's a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you've worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie… the last thing you want is to disturb the peace. So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook's own meets a grisly, mysterious demise — and you wouldn't blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree. Jace and Rocky break down some of the indie titles for the week of March 26, 2025 that they have had a chance to read. Radiant Black continues to deal with the fall out of the Catalyst War. A supervillain;'s daughter begins to her father'strue nature but before she can even decide how she feels about this revealation he is assassinated. Now her choice is to take revenge, if she can or finally live a life of freedom, but with a title like We're Taking Everyone Down With Us, you can probably guess what she will choose. The follow up from the creator of the smash-hit Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees drops this week as the "Have's" are forced to give up half their fortunes for the benefit of the "Have-Not's" or they can choose to battle to the death in a gladiatoral-lie arena. Kids give us a look at a horrifying world where very young kids become adults overnight and chaos ensues. Bitter Root returns with a new colume set in a new era, but with the same incredible storytelling we have come to expect from the series. The Lore War starts soon and the last Star Trek Defiant issue leading into it is a must-read for TNG fans with a fan-favorite character playing a major role. Stand Still comes to a satisfying conclusion as does Big Burn with both books making for excellent reads in their upcoming collected editions. Dust to Dust continues it's slow build with fantastic character work and You'll Do Bad Things is a compelling, if not mysterious, narrative with artwork that just oozes with style. Join us to hear about these books and more in this Indie Spotlight!

Does a bear kill in the woods? That's the question Patrick Horvath sets out to answer in his “Richard Scarry meets Dexter” opus Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, the subject of this year's very first Four-Color Flashback. The 2024 IDW series takes place in an idyllic world of anthropomorphic animals where not all is as it seems–the local hardware store owner, Samantha Strong, has a nasty habit of heading out to the city and slaughtering random passersby. That is, until another serial killer comes to her small town of Woodbrook, threatening the life she has carefully maintained for decades. Paul, Arlo, and Special Guest™ Eric Sipple discuss Horvath's deceptively simple cartooning, his brilliant use of panel layouts, the limits of the book's suburban satire, Hassane Otsmane-Elhaou's visionary lettering, and so much more. Plus, Arlo raves about Best Picture nominee Nickel Boys. NEXT: we'll be back, someway, somehow. Two weeks later, we're still recovering from New York Comic Con 2024. This may have been our third year attending, but we've never experienced a comic convention quite like this one, and it may take a few more months before we've actually processed everything that happened. A major factor differentiating this event from any that came before was our new gig hosting the Harvey Awards. So, we spend the first half of today's episode taking you behind the scenes of this event, detailing what you can't see when you watch the ceremony online (via Popverse). We're talking wardrobe malfunctions, deodorant hockey play, iPad snafus, and the delightful success of celebrating the best the comics medium has to offer while doing so during Harvey Kurtzman's centennial. Within the episode's back half, we're diving deep into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. We chat with artist Cliff Chiang about his time on the recent third issue. We explore Leonardo's existential crisis in India, Spaghetti Western action, and whether or not we can expect Cliff Chiang back on the book. Jason Aaron also returns to the podcast, but this time, he's brought the recently announced artist for the arc following "Return to New York" with him, Juan Ferreyra. As we gaze over Ferreyra's pages for issue six, we detail the perfect TMNT New York City, the heartbreak coming the Brothers's way, and the gauntlet they'll run upon their return to the Big Apple. Patrick Horvath is also back to close out the show. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is one of the comics' recent great successes, and few have hit the comic convention circuit as hard as Horvath. We chat about his time on the road, what he can teach us about con life, and what we can expect from the upcoming Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Seessequel, Rite of Spring. Make sure you're following all these folks on their respective social media platforms. Find Cliff Chiang on Twitter, Instagram, and on the website.
