"Faults and fractures are not necessarily good or bad, but it's important to really understand them." Dr. Molly Turko discusses March's special section on imaging faults and fractures in The Leading Edge. In this compelling episode, host Andrew Geary and Molly dive into the murky depths of the Earth to unravel the enigmatic nature of faults and fractures. Molly sheds light on the crucial role of imaging these hidden networks in understanding their impact on production, injection, and completions. With a clear message that faults and fractures are neither inherently good nor bad, this conversation challenges common misconceptions and emphasizes the importance of detailed imaging to gauge their significance. Molly offers her expertise in navigating the persistent hurdles in characterizing faults and fractures, especially ones below seismic resolution. We explore innovative non-seismic techniques for fault detection and the potential of shear wave splitting reflectivity contrast. Additionally, the episode highlights the power of the aberrancy attribute in sharpening subsurface images. Listeners will gain a fresh perspective on the multidisciplinary nature of subsurface imaging, the exciting opportunities for geoscience innovation, and the pivotal role of technology in enhancing our understanding of fault and fracture kinematics. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of this topic for the energy transition, emphasizing the continued relevance of structural geology in emerging fields like carbon sequestration and geothermal energy. This episode showcases the subsurface as a complex picture requiring patience, curiosity, and a multidisciplinary approach. OVERVIEW > The nuanced roles of faults and fractures in the subsurface and their impact on various operations > Challenges in imaging subseismic scale faults and fractures and the promise of advanced technologies > Insights from recent research on innovative imaging techniques and seismic attributes > The importance of multidisciplinary approaches in geoscience and the potential for future innovations > Open data and the need for greater industry-academia collaboration > The significance of understanding fault and fracture kinematics for accurate subsurface characterization > The rising importance of microseismic monitoring in the context of climate change and sustainability LINKS * Visit https://seg.org/podcasts/episode-218-innovations-in-fault-and-fracture-imaging-molly-turko/ for the complete interview transcript and all the links referenced in the show. Have you ever been scammed? So much of our world is full of fake news, fake people, and fake things. But who would have ever thought that the largest fake ID empire in North America could be invented by two teenage girls in West Vancouver, British Columbia? That's the theme of the show Fakes - an American-Canadian television comedy/drama series, which premiered in 2022 on CBC Gem in Canada and Netflix internationally. The series stars Emilija Baranac and Jennifer Tong as Zoe and Rebecca and premiered September 1, 2022.Each episode is portrayed from the perspective of one of the two young women, making use of the unreliable narrator technique as their respective viewpoints sometimes contradict each other. Richard Harmon, who plays the supporting character Tryst, highlighted this aspect of the show as a fun creative opportunity for him as an actor, because it allowed him to play more than one variation on the character, based on the differing views of his character in each of the main characters' perspectives, instead of having to maintain a single consistent characterization. The cast also includes Eric Bempong, Wern Lee, Matreya Scarrwener, Lauren K. Robek, Dylan Sloane, Mya Lowe, Ryan Mah, Emily Leung, Cindy Piper, Devon Slack, Oliver Rice, Debbie Podowski, Roraigh Falkner, Devon Alexander and Toby Hargrave. The show was nominated for Best Comedy and Best Picture Editing in a Children's or Youth Program or Series. David Turko, creator, and writer and I met on the red carpet at this year's Canadian Screen Actors Awards where I interviewed him about the challenges of writing comedy and what's next for him. Fakes is the story of two best friends – played by Emilija Baranac and Jennifer Tong – who accidentally build one of the largest fake ID empires in North America. Friend-of-the-podcast Richard Harmon is Tryst, who might or might not be something of a dirtbag. There's a lot to love about this comedy-drama, the 10 episodes of which hit CBC Gem (in Canada) and Netflix (outside of Canada) earlier this month. It was filmed and set in Vancouver, and it's rich with Metro Vancouver talent. It's funny and exciting, smart and well-acted, and moves really fast. It's well-titled; fakes aren't just the titular IDs, but also the fronts we put up to protect ourselves. It's big stuff for 21-minute episodes! In our Fall 2022 season opener, Fakes stars Emilija Baranac, Jennifer Tong, and Richard Harmon, and showrunner David Turko join Sabrina Rani Furminger to talk perception, deception, and all the fun stuff that makes Fakes so addictive. Quentin Turko is only 22, but he has collected more than his share of epic surfing, fishing, and diving stories from living in Outer Banks, North Carolina. From shooting giant Cobia or world record Sheepshead on shore dives, to giant "Wicked Tuna" style Bluefin caught offshore, to packing perfect uncrowded barrels at home on the Outer Banks. Quentins younger brother/dive partner/fellow tube hound joins CJ and Quentin and tell stories about diving together and catching big Red Drum from their Hobie Kayaks. The Turko brothers are young, polite, stoked, and tell a great story. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we do. Thanks for listening.
